Even as a little kid, I've always loved Krang. I'm not sure what it was, just seeing a small alien brain in a robot body boss around Shredder amused me, and it still does.
I think it was also the sarcastic humor/dialogue old-toon Krang had, he was humorous yet evil at the same time.
Since he's bound to be in the new Nick cartoon, let's hope they do him justice.

I've always wondered that, myself when Shredder is always best remembered as being the badass-looking villain.

Well the obvious answer comes first; the absurdity of him.
A gurgling brain with tentacles & a face who rules a dimension of mutants & aliens all while sitting in the gut of an android.
You gotta love that.
Of course, he was also intelligent, funny as hell, exchanged great dialogue with Shredder, had all the weapons & technology in the world, & even nearly conquered earth a bajillion times... Whats not to like?
Really though, I think it all balls down to how silly he is in appearance/voice.

Speaking of which, I love how in Turtles Forever Shredder FINALLY had enough and jumped Krang. The guy can only take so many insults without finally flipping his lid ya know.

Because he made this forum, duh. :P
I dunno, I never really liked or disliked Krang, for me he was just sort-of there with the others. I guess I liked him as the means to an end though, in taht I love Shredder's spaz moments, and Krang's at the heart of a lot of them. And as said above, him finally getting jumped for riding Shredder too hard was great.

Not every show has an alien brain-like character joking like that. The Archie TMNT Adventures comics on the other hand, used to show him more as a brutal warlord.
He's an absolute nut! Oh, and he owns the forum! ;)

I think the reason Krang is so popular is how connected he is with Shredder (they were the main villains throughout the show). Either that or it reminds fans of the Utroms (I think that's where they got the idea of Krang being an alien brain). Or both.

Just the concept of a disembodied brain- or an alien that looks like a brain- inside such a cheesy looking robot body is funny enough.
That, and he is always bossing people around and they follow him regardless of how much power he may actually have.

Well for me personally, it's the humor. Krang is just down right hilarious and actually makes Shredder look like a dunce at times. And, like everyone else has said, his goofy appearance. A talking brain in the stomach of an android is bizarre and hilarious. Long live KRANG!

Some of Krang's line crack me up:
SHREDDER: 'Just what the world needs, a 6-foot-tall brain!
KRANG: 'Wrong, my dear Shredder! I plan to use the enlarging ray on you!'
SHREDDER: 'Me?
On the other hand, one of Shredder's line distrubed me when he said "That's the last time I let you sit in my lap and steer!" either to Bebop or Rocksteady, when their drilling vehicle crashed.

Like others have said, the whole concept is just too absurd not to love. Me , I love his voice. How he goes from normal to really low, Just hilarious.
Did they ever really explain why Krang kept Shredder around anyway?

The funniest thing was when Krang wanted to replace Shredder with his mother and then told him something along the lines: "Now, don't feel bad Shredder. I could still use you around here, to do the laundry per example hahaha!"

Yes, that episode is Shredder's Mom and I love it. Global warming. Interesting episode, how popular culture was dealing with global warming back in 1990.

I guess because he needed someone to go out and do the dirty work. I mean, Krang hardly ever did anything himself. He sent Bebop and Rocksteady... and Shredder was kinda there to supervise...?

Krang was just awesome. Plus, it helps that he didn't get a decent toy until way into the line. :D

Krang was awesome...that seems to be a recurring answer, and it is something sorta' hard to quantify, but he really is a pretty great character. First off, he just has a REALLY distinct look. All great villains are instantly recognizable, and a mildly anthropomorphic pink brain? That sticks out a bit. Second, he's a great inversion and/or exaggeration of traditional villain archetypes. You've got your soldier villains (Shredder) who are physically dangerous, then you've got your brain villains who are dangerous in terms of manipulation and plotting. Krang distills that archetype completely. He's a literal brain!:tgrin:

But I loved seing Krang fighting the TMNT, like in the Big Trilogy.
