View Full Version : On a scale of 1-10, what is your level of confidence with Nick with the TMNT IP?

Since we are still waiting as to what Nick will do with the property thus far, (I'm not counting the Turtles Forever DVD release, which was far from perfect anyway.) what is your confidence level right now with how you believe they will handled owning and managing this IP? With 1 being the the lowest amount of confidence (0 being none what so ever)and 10 being the highest, what do you think? Vote and discuss what you think right now!

I threw down a 7. In terms of the most popular incarnation of the Turtles and all the potential merch that can come from a new show following that formula, TMNT is in good hands with Nick. From the perspective of pleasing OT fans, I'd give them a 10 on treating the Turtles well.
However, as a fan of the first movie and the comics as well as the OT, I had to drop my score a bit because I don't think they'll have much to give comic fans. If they have anything cool coming in that regard, I'll be very surprised. I'll be even more surprised if it's anything good.
That seems like a half-and-half sort of thing, but I didn't want to give Nick a score of 5. That seems too low. So I went with a 7. I think it'll be alright, but not too great. Hopefully I'm proven wrong and I'm just underestimating how great things will turn out.

I'm a 5. Hopeful but like I said previously, the Turtles Forever DVD release was subpar since they could of released the director's cut and they cut out the live action cameo's of the creators. Still, I need to wait to see what they actually do themselves that's original to know for sure if the property is in the right hands.

0. Viacom is retarded. I think they will RUIN tmnt, every nick show sucks, so I think this will suck too, but it's going to suck alot more then their other shows, IMO. R.I.P interesting storylines-thought put in-and it's not for money tmnt.

I look forward to seeing how this poll will be voted on over the next few days as more TMNT fans vote and comment. So far, it's totally mixed. Some think they will **** it all up, others say they will wait and see, while a few say it will be awesome. The majority is not going one side of the other side so far. Interesting.

I too said 7. I really don't belive they will ruin the TMNT, and I think that what they will do will be entertaining to an extent, but I have a feeling that it won't be near the quality of the OT and 2K3 shows or the first movie.

I voted 5. It could be a hit or miss, I prefer to wait and see. I'm not into the Nick shows, but Avatar: the last airbender is one of my fave shows. If the new show is half as good as that, I'll be a happy camper. :)

They're trying to make money and entertain kids not make me happy so I voted 5. If they do the above I won't be happy, if they surprise me and actually care about the pre-established fan base I'll be both happy. It's time a new generation of kids gets to enjoy Turtles.
I know 2K3 was supposed to be that but this is a real fresh start where there's no grandpa holding them back from doing what they think kids want to see. Reading Laird's script feedback made me realize that had he not been there to slap the writers on the wrist a lot of 2K3 would have been really silly. This is probably why the tone seemed so awkward. They tried to please him and please the kids too.
Anyways the new movie is where my hopes lie. They can do a more mature movie and still have a full blown kiddie toon. Obviously Transformers comes to mind, not that I can call that mature with a straight look on my face but you get my point. The movie can be for the older crowd as well as kids and the series can be just for kids. I ask they respect the characters and the franchise as a whole but they don't really have to and as of right now they owe me nothing.
For those who have doubts, Nick did not buy the turtles to kiddify them, they bought them to have action shows on their network. Nick isn't the kid/comedy cartoons from the 90s, they want to get into action shows, you can tell that by looking at their line up of Power Rangers, Dragon Ball, Voltron etc. They've also produced one of the best action shows (Avatar) ever so they are up to it.
For the new show my level of confidence is very high, I think Nick will really do a great job with it. However my level of confidence with Nick/Viacom having the turtles franchise is 50/50, I really don't know what they'll do with the turtles after this revival finishes its run, they have many other hugely iconic franchises they just don't use at all.. So maybe after the new show finishes its run after 6 years or so its the end of the turtles for a considerably long amount of time.
And for those who want a more serious take on the turtles, remember Viacom owns the turtles, they took Ren & Stimpy from Nick and made a show for MTV for an adult audience when they saw thats what people wanted, sure that show was terrible and failed but it shows that Viacom was ok with taking one of its cartoons from their kid network and give it a shot at an older audience. In fact it might be even more likely for the TMNT to have a more adult take on it, Mirage had the franchise for 25 years and was never able to do "adult" turtles outside of comics and even if they kept the franchise it likely wasn't going to happen, they were to small to take the risk but Viacom isn't.
9! I have said it before, I am quite confident in it. I have always loved Nick, and I have always loved the shows on it.
Plus, they might throw tmnt related things in there other shows. How cool would that be?

Absolutely no confidence at all. Nick usually represents kiddie crap, and when I read way back they wanted to make it more like the old series...HELL NO.
I'm so disenchanted with it all....
I still love me Raphie though...I dont want to see how bad Nick is going to show him.

I have my concerns obviously, especially with how the DVDs of said titles are going to be handled from now on, but for the most part I'm trying to remain optomistic. I mean, Nick is obviously planning some big things. TMNT, Power Rangers, Voltron, DBZ Kai, (possibly) Digimon - I think they're up to the task of maybe, just maybe, picking up where CN has failed us recently (barring Ben 10) for action programming.
So with all of that in mind, I'll give it a 7. Normally I'd give a 6, but my optomism makes me want to give them one higher.

Very good point there, and you're right.
That's pretty much MY opinion, too, and why I gave them a "7". I have faith in them to NOT screw it up, but at the SAME time, I'm choosing to err on the side of caution.

Anyone who thinks Nick paid $60 million for the TMNT franchise just to treat it poorly is clearly some kind of an idiot.
From the sounds of things they want the new movie to be "huge" and a box-office hit, which is only a good thing.
The quality of the cartoon depends, but Nick is getting into action cartoons so something similar to the Archie series might be good.

VERY well put, hun, and I TOTALLY agree with you on every word!
From the sounds of things they want the new movie to be "huge" and a box-office hit, which is only a good thing.
Also good news, but, speaking just for myself, the notion that they want to go back and time and make a LIVE-ACTION movie with people in those heavy Turtle costumes has me a bit iffy on things. Now, IF they did it as a hybrid (ala Transformers; etc.), THAT would be okay. The other, like in the original three 90's movies...not so much.
The quality of the cartoon depends, but Nick is getting into action cartoons so something similar to the Archie series might be good.
Let's hope that the quality is good, but the other is good news, too.
If they turn it into a cross between Spongebob Squarepants and Danny Phantom, though, I'll be severely, SEVERELY P.O.ed.
If they turn it into a cross between Spongebob Squarepants and Danny Phantom, though, I'll be severely, SEVERELY P.O.ed.
Hey, Danny Phantom was fun and enjoyable to watch. I love that gosh darn box ghost!
I think I said this before somewhere... stop comparing. It is irritating, TMNT will take on its own image in Nick. It won't be cooperating, and operating with all the other cartoons. It will be a different show, it won't be teenage mutant ninja rugrats, or sponges. It will just be TMNT but on a different channel, woopdeedoo.
People should let these discussions go down the toilet till we actually get something to have an opinion on.

-- tl;dr --
Kiddie stuff and casual entertainment for the masses: 10+
Stuff for the hardcore oldschool comic-loving fanbase: 0
-- Long version --
To further clarify my 7, I'm thinking along these lines:
As an action cartoon for children, I have a lot of faith in Nick. Based solely on this, I'd give them a 10.
Based solely on shirts and other merchandise whether it be for their new stuff or if it's part of some "retro line," I'd also give them a 10. I've seen what Turtles shirts and such look like now and I've seen the same for other Nick properties and they're all great.
Going off of video games and toys, another 10. Well, maybe an 8. The toys I've seen for other Nick properties look great. Licensed video games are always something to be iffy on until you actually play them, though.
When it comes to the new movie, I'm split on the issue. From the standpoint of generating tons of cash and making something that the masses will like, I have a lot of faith in Paramount to give us something that will do that. For me, it'll at least be a decent popcorn flick but I don't expect anything that the extremely tiny, super oldschool, hardcore fans who have stuck around for 15 years to really get into. Especially if you're mostly a fan of the comics. So, more like a 5 or a 6.
Speaking of the comics, that's where things get a super low rating. I have no faith in Nick to give TMNT to anyone who can do comics nor do I expect them to even try to get comics out there in the first place. Also, I don't expect to see a Mirage-published TMNT comic ever again.I'd love to be presently surprised, but I'm not expecting anything at all. This is where my fat 0 comes in.
If I had averaged it out from the beginning, that'd be about a 6.9. I didn't think it this far out initially and I just give it a 7 based on gut feelings. Either way, I'm gonig to enjoy what happens. Part of me is going to miss the old days where material was coming out for various audiences. The other part of me is likely going to love what's gonig to happen pretty soon.
If the show is half as good as Nickelodeon's Avatar, it'll be the best TMNT cartoon yet. Seriously, people need to quit generalizing Nick as "kiddy", sure its a kids channel but its actually been aiming mostly at girls/tweens in the past decade and this new decade to boys/action shows, the rugrats/slime decade was the 90s and thats what people keep thinking the new turtles show is going to be like. We haven't even seen anything and people already are blowing it off.
I'm going to go ahead and make a (safe)prediction..once we get character designs the majority of the forum are going to hate it, people will dismiss the show after the first few previews before the show airs and say it sucks and no matter how good the first episode will be it will be hated by most on this forum. The show will be good but most here will not like it, mostly since everyone here has a very specific view of what the turtles are for them, heck the division between OTrocks/sucks-2k3rocks/sucks-Miragerocks/sucks is already pretty big here.

When I say "kiddies" I mean "for kids." Avatar, DBZ Kai, etc. are great, but they're still kid shows and that's what I'm getting at. It's not anything bad, but I have to be very clear in what I mean due to the fact that there are so many types of TMNT fans. However, I do agree with your safe prediction.

I have every confidence that they'll be able to spin a well-done children's show/franchise out of it. We'll probably get another decent to good action cartoon, which I could always go for, even if it does skew young.
For my own part, all they have to do to satisfy me is hand off reprint rights to another comic publisher so we get the goddamn trades Mirage never gave us. And haven't we already heard rumblings that they'd be kind-of sort-of maybe willing to do that? So, I'll consider myself square with the Nick IP if they can get that done. If I don't dig the new material, I can at least have the series I enjoy, and that'll be enough.

Some of you sound really delusional about this.
Mirage/Laird/Murphy have stated they gave all the important materials over to Nick during the buy-out. Nick is well aware of every aspect of the TMNT property.
The only aspect Nick isn't pursuing right now is the comics, but that may change after the cartoon/movie is a hit, since that's what they're concentration on first.
And where is this, "they'll kiddify the cartoon," BS coming from? Both cartoons so far were aimed at kids, and most people here enjoyed them. The show is probably going to be a slightly more tightly-written show than the original cartoon was.

Yes, 2k3 used comic storylines. However, it was an action show aimed at children. No questioning that. Airing on Nicktoons, it would not be out-of-place amongst shows like Voltron, Dragonball Z Kai, and Power Rangers. Anyone who thinks otherwise didn't seem to notice that 2k3 was a Saturday morning cartoon made by a company called 4Kids that aired in a block completely dedicated to shows meant to entertain children.

I really don't want to sound like Mr. Negativity, but I really can't see TMNT regaining the popularity it had back in the late 80's/early 90's. TMNT was new and fresh when it first came out and it really tapped into the culture of the times, it had a moderate resurgence of popularity back in '03 when the new toon came out, but nothing like the old days. Times are different now and pop culture is different, it may be successful, but it won't compare to the level of popularity during it's initial run.
I understand what you're trying to say, usagi-san, and I do hope it's successful and popular, but I'm just trying to tell you to not get your hopes up for a second coming of Turtle-mania.

Nick is not going to tone down TMNT. I guarantee there will be more action/fight scenes in this show than the 80's series ever had.
We're not going to see the Turtles go back to throwing pizza at Shredder to defeat him for the episode.
My only fear is TMNT will get lost in the mire of martial arts action shows/cartoons that will be on Nick: Kung Fu Panda-legends of awsomeness, DBZ, Avatar the Legend of Korra, and the live-action Powers rangers Samurai.:(
Don't forget Voltron ;) That is my fear as well (well not necessarily tmnt), with all the awesome shows coming out I just can't see all of them being successful and at least a few of them will bite the dust. Not only on Nick but ones on Cartoon Network and Disney as well. I mean for Nick I want Power Rangers, TMNT, Avatar and Voltron all to do great. There is also the thing that PRs/TMNT/Voltron are all three franchises that were once huge but have not proven themselves since those days.
TMNT though has the benefit of being owned by Nick, so they'll get priority no matter what. They have the best chance out of the other shows of not being lost in the shuffle. For TMNT though I'd be more concerned with the movie if it indeed comes out in 2012 since that year is bloated with huge movies that all make a lot of money and TMNT will have a ton of competition.

Well thats because only now is Nick trying to change into appealing to kids action shows. Avatar is an example of what they can do, Nick wanted a kids action show and liked the idea of Avatar so they funded it. Sure other shows won't have the team Avatar did but Nick chose them because they saw they could do a good job. Disney has Marvel now and DC has a ton of action shows for 2011/2012, Nick wants a piece of that pie.
I agree that once something was a fad its hard to get back to that place, the turtles where new and fresh back then, its almost impossible to re-create that again. However that doesn't mean the new show can't be moderately successful, not quite fad level it had but big on its own. Also it could get huge again, just look at Transformers, maybe it didn't get as big as it once was in the 80s but its gotten pretty huge again on fad level.

Eh, I was only counting the martial arts shows, but your absolutely right. My worst fear is the similarity with Kung Fu Panda. Two Martial arts shows with Anthrpomorphic animals, with cool action mixed with humor? And Kung Fu Panda is the bigger of the Two franchises right now. Yeah, I'm a little worried for TMNT :/
And Po the Panda makes things even worse for ever seeing my favorite TMNT character in Animation. (not to mention the fact that, like Usagi Yojimbo, he was a character owned by somebody else >< )

If the shows are similar in animation and in style, there is no reason we wouldn't be seeing some kind of Kung Fu Panda/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cross over this year.

I really doubt we'll be seeing anything this year.

Truthfully I think if they keep it in the tone of the early 2k3 series I think it will b fine.

Guess that shows we shouldn't assume what Nick is intending to do with the show
What I'm hoping for is OT characters and the 2k3 tone.

Does anyone know when the show is going to air in 2011? Before or after summer? I'm really looking forward to this.

The new show isn't set to debut until next year. Right now we've just been speculating that 2K3 or the Fred Wolf series may begin airing on Nick since the website says "Get ready for TMNT action in 2011".

Are you joking? Why the hell would Nick do a crossover with TMNT and a Dreamworks franchise?
This thread is laughable. Nick owns TMNT and is going to make every effort to make the new show a success.
The amount of bitter fans in this thread is astounding.

You just sorta answered your own question. Viacom owned Dreamworks in 2006-2008, they still have a working relationship, if they think it would work, they would probably do it.
When the Turtles were licensed to Saban, they did a cross-over with the Power Rangers.
I'm not saying they will do it or if it's a bad or good of an idea. I'm just saying they could if they wanted to.

At the time of this post, over 82% voted 5 or above, and most of the comments posted so far were either positive or neutral. You must be easily astounded. :P

I"m going to give them a 4. I really can't see Nick doing a good job. I think the 2k3 series will be the closest interpretation to the comics we are going to get.
