Question about TMNT First Graphic Novels...

I know I *should* know this guys, but what is the extra material included in the First Graphic Novels, or is there even any? Thanks for the help...

The first book has some colored shorts: "New Comic Day!", "Night Life", and some cool colored pinups. Can't recall any bonus content in the other books.

Although one thing apparently a lot of people don't notice is how much different the inking is in these books. The first book especially: each issue has a ton of reworked inking, mostly minor details, but there's a definite change. April's hair and face are probably the most noticeable differences; she looks more attractive here in issue 2, heh. I suspect Kevin updated them all (the added ink tones in the second and third issues are consistent with the first issue, which he colored), intending to blueline all the issues himself, but found he had no time.

i would suggesed getting all four color book...they are amazing, a little over sized...and the bonus matterial that ab freak said...they are definatly worth it!!

Only Volume 1 and Volume 3 have bonus shorts.

Volume 1 has, as Abnormal Freak mentioned, "New Comic Day" and "Night Life".

Volume 3 has "49th Street Stompers".

All of those bonus strips are available in Shell Shock, albeit in black and white.


The First Comics color reprints are interesting for novelty's sake and the coloring/reinking is rather good (not that I think the Mirage series really needed color). If you can get them for MSRP, I'd say go for it (and that seems to be what they run for on the aftermarket, anyway). Just don't break your wallet, they aren't *that* special.

The first book's great, mostly for the colors on issue 1, but issues 2 and 3 also look really neat.

Sadly, Lavigne's colors on the remaining three TPBs just don't appeal to me. His color palette seriously looks like Easter pastels, and he goofs up some of the details (like, why is there no falling snow in the Leonardo one-shot, when even one of the characters says, "Leo better hurry back soon; it's starting to snow heavily"?).

Those First GNs (or rather the British Penguin versions) will always hold a special place in my heart as the first place I encountered the TMNT. I don't think the colouring in them is that great (the first issue is fantastic, but there's a steady downhill slide), but they're still worth picking up.

Plus, "New Comic Day" somehow managed to get me into American Splendor (I figured, if it's the kind of comic Don would read I should track it down), so in a roundabout way I owe pretty much my current career to that short comic...
