I don't know if this has been discussed already, but this is a thought I've had for a long time...

Should the Ninja Turtles be refered to as turtles?

Let me explain...

The Ninja Turtles are basicly humanoid sentient beings who were originally ordinary turtles. Their mutation could be suggested as a super-hyper evolution.

Humans were evolved from apes, and further back, from monkeys. But we don't call humans "monkeys".

So, is it safe to say that the Ninja "Turtles" deserves a new name for their unique species? And what would it be?

Now's your chance to get creative and come up with one! :tsmile:

Humans and Apes have the same forefather.

The Turtles that have grown through unnatural mutation, not through generations of breeding. So they are still Red Eared Sliders only bigger and humanoid form.

should they have a name a name, it should be a mix of Trachemys scripta elegans and something to indicate their humanoid state, or their greatness.

Trachemys scripta elegans Superior?

I thought they've always been referred to as "mutant turtles," or more specifically "mutant ninja turtles." With just "turtles" being a shortening of this description and not meant to indicate that they are regular animals.

I'll go with what Berserker said. The title explains it all, teenage mutant ninja turtles. No need to figure out more.

I think the scientific term for them is Trachemys scripta 'Onzuka' I believe, but I ain't no genus. -teehee-

I would like a smarty though to figure out the the actual name for them, because I am probably wrong.

"Mutant Turtle" is a pretty broad term. It can be used to decribe any kind of mutant variaty.
You could still call a house-sized, three-headed, six-limmed, winged, flying turtle a "mutant turtle" if mutation is the cause of its form. Yet it's nothing like a Ninja Turtle.

should they have a name a name, it should be a mix of Trachemys scripta elegans and something to indicate their humanoid state, or their greatness.

Trachemys scripta elegans Superior?

I like that. :)

But how about something... shorter? :ohwell:

That defeats the purpose of having a scientific name! :P

The TMNT may actually find it highly offensive that we call them 'Turtles'. Perhaps we should all start referring to the as 'Turtle-Americans', yes? ;)

Actually they have an official scientific classification. That being ninjemys. Ninjemys Oweni is one particular species from the Pleistocene era. Ninjemys litterally translates as Ninja Turtle.

This is the skull of a real Ninjemys:

That seems to work. :tsmile:

Interesting thought...

Has there ever been an attempt in the TMNT franchize (comics, TV shows, etc...) that attempted to give the Ninja Turtles a new name for their unique species?

Wha? They're Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Just leave it at that. I mean that's what they are, let's not make this complicated.
