View Full Version : Recommendation to HELP Bandwidth and slower loaders

I noticed that some people are using Animated Avatars, huge files, and more than one image in their signature. In addition I've noticed some people using avatars of rediculous size.

Each time that person posts, and that avatar is accessed it takes time to load. In addition if the avatar is located on the technodrome server then it will be considered part of the alotted bandwidth EACH time that image/animation/etc is in the post. Each time that post is accessed.

I recommend making a signature rule and Avatar rule for number of images used, posting an image signature only once per thread, size of file and size of image.

Just an idea. And keep in mind your getting more members so you might just hit that bandwidth problem again.

Personallly I'd rather use the bandwidth for reading threads and seeing someone's new artwork.

For instance: (this is just what another board uses)

On another message board I tend to frequent, they have a limit of signatures being a max of 45Kb in size. Regardless of how many pictures are in it or if it's animated. This reduces load time. The whole signature can not be longer than 8 lines of text wether it has an image or not. This is just what they use for formatting purposes as well.

Avatars "or icons" are not to be larger than 100x100pixels. Just keeps formatting nice.

Signatures are only used once per thread. If you post anymore after the first, turn off your signature. (i'm not seeing an easy way to do that on this board though.)

Just some ideas, throw the idea around and maybe tweak this to fit. :)

Gee I wonder who you are talking about?

Anyways, The board has an automatic limit to the size of the signature, and If it is above that limit, it tells you so, and my sig is obviously under that limit so I see no problem, especially scince it is linked from MY server meaning it uses my bandwidth

Edit: You know what, I like you... I want no Static with you, I'm re working my Avatar/Sig just for you

Thanks for the suggestion! Actually, none of the avatars or signature images are hosted on this server except for the few in the gallery, and those are sized so that they won't be a problem. The rest of the avatars we host are hosted at my ATTBI account, so that won't affect our bandwidth usage.

You're right, though, that there is occasionally a problem with people using very large avatars, but unfortunately phpBB doesn't offer a way to control this (even though I've seen other forum software that does). I guess the only way to enforce this is to have our moderators ask people to resize avatars that are too big. I would consider a width of 180 pixels and a height of 250 pixels to be the maximum size of an avatar since that's as big as it can be without stretching the tables. Signatures already have a character limit, so those shouldn't be a problem.

Actually I was not referring to anyone in particular. Please do not take it personally.

I've noted more than 10 avatars that "I personally" would consider OVERLY large.

I've also noted more than 5 people who use more than one image, or what I would "Personally" consider overly large images in their signature.

My "Primary" Purpose with the recommendation was to help consider MORE ways to keep the sites bandwidth down and the site up all month.

It was a recommendation, an Idea, nothing more. And no I did not think of you personally. Had it only been one or two at most, I wouldn't even bring it up, but if you go back through some of the posts in each forum you will notice alot of posts and alot of images, in some cases there are more sigs and images than any real posts.

My goal is not to upset anyone and I personally don't think you need to change your signature for me or anyone else, especially if you are within the current guidelines sponsored by the site/forum admin.

This was more of a thought provoker. Or so I had hoped.

This has nothing to do with the post, but I figure I owe you an explination anyways, Savanti:

I have a non-cancerous cyst inside my head, and it causes extreme migraines, from time to time I'll get these migraines and take it out on EVERYONE... So I do apologize to you, in fact I tried to make it back here to change my post entirely but my Internet Service decided to crap out on me... (Hence my other bad mood)

Is my avatar too big, cause I'd be happy to resize it...? :-?Nope, because it doesn't stretch the tables horizontally or cause too much vertical scrolling.
