I've been seeing alot of art of him lately and I keep seeing him smoking a cigar. I don't remember him doing this in the cartoon but its also been a VERY long time since I saw it. So, did he smoke in the cartoon?

Never, that I recall. Highly doubt a cartoon at the time would have allowed that, with all the dumb regulations and such. :p (And it just keeps getting worse...)

Nupe, it's just artistic license.
Man, I miss all the old classic cartoons that were politically incorrect. I remember old Goofy 'toons where he had road rage and smoked, etc. The world today is too freakin' sensitive.

:D Love it!!! I blame America's sissified, over-sensitive nature on the '60's...damn hippies! :P
Kids these days don't know what all sorts of great 'toons they're missing out on because the shows have all been pulled and stored in a vault. I think us kids of the '80's were the last generation to see awesome old cartoons.

I know what you mean, I have a niece and she watches the Disney channel. When I watched that as a kid in the 80's-early 90's, they had all the classic Disney cartoons uncut playing on a pretty endless loop... there were a few live action shows but very few. Nowadays shes watching all these "human shows" that have horrible comedy *cough-suite life-cough* and wacky poorly animated shows that have a predictable outcome. I love the old cartoons and I've seen one or two on there when they have a show that ends like 10-15min before the top of the next hour, but all the time... they cut them to pieces. Its sad.

What's great is the cartoon was released uncut on one of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVDs. Except, when you have the subtitles on, they say, "You dirty fox!" Uhh... No, totally not saying that word, but I guess for any potentially pissed off parents, they threw that in there, ha ha. "Turn on the subtitles! He says FOX! You, ma'am (or sir), have DIRTY, dirty ears!"
I read, however, that on a previous video release, they edited in the word "cur" from another line delivered in the cartoon, and put it in place of the F-word.
I really hope someone competent releases all of the Private Snafu cartoons on DVD. (The one collection that is available has the Bosko Video logo in a corner of the screen at all times, or something like that.) I love the one with the "booby traps" gag.

the cigar probably comes from all the soldier movies where one big burly character smokes

I don't think any character in the old series ever smoked.
There was this one time though in "Camera Bugged" when the turtles were fighting Shredder at the fountain. When Shredder escaped, I forget how he did it, but he threw a bunch of smoke at the turtles and Michaelangelo said "I hate it when people smoke and run". I don't remember seeing any cigarettes or cigars at the scene so I wouldn't consider it smoking.
Other than that I can't think of any smoke reference and Rocksteady never smoked in the cartoon.

That'd be my assumption as well, if you watch any sort of "Vietnam" movies/shows, there is almost always a burly soldier who smokes cigars. With the helmet Rocksteady wears, it definitely conjures up that image in my head, if I were to make some fan art of him, he'd most likely be smoking a cigar, it just feels right.

I remember in the episode where they first met Leatherhead Rasputin shot a smoke bomb arrow at the badguys and the wind caused a backdraft sending the smoke towards the heroes and Raphael said "I distinctly asked for the no smoking section!"

I recall Lucky Luke smoking cigarettes in some comics and cartoons, before it was removed.
