View Full Version : Best & Worst of the Old Toon

Best
----
s1 - Turtle Tracks
s3 - Turtles on Trial (best animation, great story, awesome action)
s3 - Cowabunga Shredhead (funny and clever, wonderful voice acting)
s3 - The Big Blow Out (so epic)

Worst
-----
s4 - Michelangelo Toys Around (this doesn't even seem like a TMNT story, incredibly boring)
s3 - Mr. Ogg Goes to Town (just so freaking annoying, turns everything into a farce)
s9 - Split Second (horribly weak writing, annoying villain, by-the-#'s plot)
s5 - Donatello's Badd Time (an insult to Don's ninja skills, annoying villains)

Having re-watched all the seasons, Season 4 easily has the worst with so many subpar eps, although it does has a few gems to make up for it.
Things I considered:
-Plot
-Animation
-Backgrounds
-Dialog
-Overall Direction

What are your votes?

The one thing I appreciate the Old Toon is that because most of its stories are episodic, a person can just happily skip the really really bad episodes/arc knowing that doing so wouldn't make any confusion in watching future episodes.

Vacation in Europe comes to mind. Oh *facepalm*.

I agree that even the old shows absolute worst episodes are still worth watching simply because of how stupid/funny they are.

I can sit through some of the crappier episodes and still get some type of enjoyment out of them, simply because this was not meant to be a serious cartoon.

The only episodes I ever really had a hard time sitting through were the European Vacation ones. Not only were the plots bad, but the substitute voice for Raph was horrible, and I love Jim Cummings but I prefer James Avery as Shredder. Everything else besides those episodes are at the very least tolerable.

The Best
-All of Season 1
-Return of the Technodrome
-Enter: The Rat King
-"The Big" trilogy episodes of Season 3
-The Dimension X Story
-Splinter Vanishes
-My Brother the Bad Guy
-Legend of Koji
-Shredder Triumphant
-Turtle Trek

Ones I enjoy that will deserve mention
-The Eye of Zarnoth 4-part
-20,000 Leaks Under The Sea
-Cowabunga Shredhead
-Green with Jealousy
-Pizza By The Shred
-Beware The Lotus
-Blast From The Past
-Shredder's Mom
-Were-rats from Channel 6
-Farewell Lotus Blossom
-What's Michaelangelo Good For
-Rock Around The Block
-The Sword of Yurikawa
-Phantom of the Sewers (this episode was way outside of my comfort zone but for some reason, I do enjoy it because it makes me appreciate other episodes more. lol...)
-Snakes Alive
-Tower Of Power (yes I did enjoy some of the European ones :P )
-A Real Snow Job
-Night of the Dark Turtles
-White Belt, Black Heart
-Night of the Rogues (great episode but could have been 10x better if it were a 2-parter with better bad guys)
-Combat Land

The Worst
These are the episodes that, for whatever reason, I don't/never cared for:

-New York's Shiniest
-Attack of the Big MACC
-The Making of Metalhead (just seems pointless)
-Donatello Makes Time (not a bad episode but executed poorly)
-Rebel Without A Fin (worst episode ever?!)

It seems that when I went through the list then, Season 4 and 5 consist mostly of "meh!" episodes. Ones that I would consider for my "The Worst" list but since there are so many, I feel like they are a step above some of the songs I mentioned. But, as someone mentioned above, there are gems in each.
I think Season 7, aside from 1, has the best list of episodes overall. The best consistency whereas Season 3 has a lot of fun ones too but also lots of "meh!" episodes.

Any list of the worst Old Toon episodes MUST include "The Gang's All Here." It's just a travesty of logic and animation.

Huh, why is it that so many people seem to hate "New York's Shiniest?" I rather liked Rex-1 and the episode in general, in spite of all the numerous gaping plot holes... (even more than the series' usual fare).

"Funny, they Shrunk Michaelangelo" is pretty bad, if nothing else than that everybody talks in squeaky chipmunk voices the whole episode. In fact, the whole episode reminds me of a really terrible rip-off of Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers.

I'd rather go streaking in a blizzard than ever watch "The Turtle Terminator" again.

3)Funny,they Shrunk Michaelangelo
4)Most of the European episodes
5)Mr. Nice Guy

7)State of Shock

Totally agree with "Funny, the shrunk Mike", but I have a nostalgic fondness for "NY's Shiniest" since it was on the "Cowabunga Shredhead" VHS tape and that's one of the few I had when I was a kid.

The original miniseries were the greatest episodes, in my opinion. The animation was great, the balance of humor and action was perfect, and everything was so new and exciting.

But, man, how can you guys talk about best episodes and not mention The Case of the Killer Pizzas? Or The Incredible Shrinking Turtles?

Also, I really liked Leatherhead Meets the Rat King.

As for "worst," I remember hating "The Great Boldini" and any other episode involving Zack. He gave off a real "Junior Ghostbusters" kind of vibe. The Turtles are already teenagers, now they're also babysitters? Gimme a break.

That type of animation was always my least favourite. It appeared a few times in Season 3 but more often in Season 4 I think.
All of the episodes (except Shredder's Mom) before CBS got it in Season 4, I think, have that animation. Like Turtles of the Jungle, Michaelangelo Toys Around, etc.

Hm, best and worst eps, eh? Well, here's what I'd pick for best and worst for me, and I'm basing it purely on entertaining purposes only, regardless if the ep was loaded with errors or flaws. For example, Night of the Dark Turtle is a best/fav for me, despite the fact that Shredder, to me, was a bit out of character.

Best
Raphael Meets His Match (Probably my all-time favorite)
Night of the Dark Turtle
The majority of season 1
Cowabunga Shredhead
Leatherhead Meets the Rat King
Mr. Nice Guy (I always liked how Raph started acting after going back to normal)
Cry HAVOC
What's Michaelangelo Good For
Shredder Triumphant
Raphael vs the Volcano
Any ep that had Casey Jones in it. He was nuts!
Leonardo, Renaissance Turtle
The Big Rip Off
The Big Break In
The Big Blow Out
The Turteloid eps
White Belt, Black Heart
Donatello's Duplicate
Snake's Alive

Worst
Turtles of the Jungle
Blast from the past
The Europe Vacation eps (I just couldn't stand the replacement for Raph)
Michaelangelo Toys Around
Turtle Maniac
Take me to your leader
Nightmare in the Lair
Funny, they shrunk Michaelangelo

I know there's probably more, but these are the ones that come to mind.

Sorry for bumping up an oldie, but I could not resist!
Bad episodes:
Mr. Ogg Goes To Town
The Missing Map
The Gang's All Here
Back To The Egg
Funny They Shrunk Michaelangelo
Raphael Knocks 'em Dead
Donatello's Badd Time
Polly Wanna Pizza
Mr. Nice Guy
The New Mutation
Cater,The Enforcer
Mobster From Dimension X

I would rather do without Zack, Cater, and Dregg, but aside from this set of a dozen episode I love each of them. M favorite episodes are hard to pick out from the remaining 181 but I can tell you my top three.

1. Night of The Rogues- I could have done without Zack with Mondo Gecko or the Punk Frogs in his stead and maybe switched Tempestra with duo Groundchuck and Dirtbag if not have included General Traag.
2. Get Shredder-This shows naysayers Shredder can be badass in the original cartoon. Beserko seemed to be a great villain in his own right and if Shredder and Krang had to be removed for a time it would have been better for him to be in their place instead of Dregg!
3.The Legend of Koji-I love it when the series blends action and humor and silly with the serious and this episode does it and gives us a look at the formation of the Foot Clan! There is a continuity the Kojima Brothers were said to be the founders so perhaps they could have taught Koji who founded it?

The Kojima Brothers were never said to have founded, they were just fearsome ninja warriors but had been dead for 3-400 years or something.

Its been about a year since I have seen that particular episode, but I can hear Shredder saying something to the effect that they were the founders of the Foot Clan. Well, its a good excuse to watch it again!:) It does clear up that continuity question. Still its odd how their last family name is Kojima and while Hamto's ancestor's first name was Koji.

"Attack of the Big Macc" was so bad it was actually the first episode that I couldn't finish. I generally hate anything where human technology and weapons are made worthless against alien entities (I know Macc is from the future, but it qualifies as about the same thing), but the episode reaches truly ludicrous levels when Macc, after melting the tank cannon with his laser, suddenly can't do a thing to the tank when he's shooting at the turtles and they use it as cover.

"Blast from the Past" is outright shameful. It sets up a somewhat interesting situation, with an ancient ghost relating to the history of the Foot Clan, and it tantalizes audiences with the bizarre (actually kind of scary) possibility of Rocksteady and Bebop becoming competent, but then almost the whole episode is spent flashing back to Season 1. In all the time Raphael is captured by the Shredder and his gang, the only thing they ever do to him is test the henchmutants' new skills by pinning him to the wall with various nonlethal uses of bladed weapons. Then once Splinter gets his memory back, he saves Raphael just by channeling the three stooges. That might have been funny under different circumstances, but here it is wretchedly-anticlimatic. They spend a whole episode flashing back to a series of good, exciting ones, which only nails home how stupid their new episode is.

I didn't like "Case of the Hot Kimono." Agatha is an unlikeable Mary-Sue, and she didn't even need to be there; it was completely possible to do a detective story with just the turtles.

"The Turtle Terminator" is all kinds of stupid. It breaks even its own rules until I shook my head in disgust. I could pick apart so many of the flaws of that episode's plot. However, it is partially redeemed by the real Irma's antics. Her interactions with the villains are some of the funniest scenes she's ever had.

"Mr. Ogg Comes to Town" is one of those things that makes me wish the turtles really used their weapons. That episode would probably have been alright--if it ended with the turtles disemboweling Ogg.

This is something I will have to come back to, but I enjoy all of Season 1 and the Eye of Sarnath (Zarnov) episodes from Season 2.

I've said this a couple times before on other threads, but I think it warrants mentioning again: I hate "Return of the Shredder". The Zach episodes make me cringe as well because the character makes me ashamed to ever want to be a Ninja Turtle as a child.

"Farewell Lotus Blossom" was pretty stupid; mostly because it was a ridiculous way to retire an interesting character. In fact, it wasn't clear why they needed to get rid of her in the context of that plot.

Oddly enough, I liked most of the European Vacation season. It may have had its flaws, but it was educational, atmospheric, and something apart from the norm for the show. The one where I feel they wasted a perfectly good plot, though, was the one where the Turtles go back in time to meet Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty. They should have just had an adventure with Sherlock Holmes in Victorian London; instead they just jumped into the present again to fight Moriarty, and Holmes got kicked to the curb.

Michelangelo Toys Around is probably this show's reply to the "Christmas Aliens". It has a boy, and "Poor Little Rich Turtle" uses a girl, every show of the 1970's, 80's and early 1990's had a least one episode with the "unhappy rich kid" with parents who only care for business theme.

Her problem was that she had to take on responsibility at a young age (her grandfather's business I think) and wasn't able to just "be a kid" or even have friends, if I'm remembering it right.

I'm going to be a bit more descriptive with what were the good episodes compared to just telling out the titles.

Best: The background music introduced for Seasons 1-3 and 6-7 (Season 4's BGM is a guilty pleasure of mine and the Season 5 cues are just bad). The Red Sky BGM is OK though. Also, any episode that includes ALL of the following:
-Splinter teaches the turtles how to be good Ninjas
-Shredder makes a threatening attack that could destroy not just the turtles but the city or world.
-The turtles all use their ninja weapons to attack Shredder and his minions
-Raph gets some good sarcasm about attacks
-The end of the episode lets you feel that Shredder is not much of a threat anymore, as opposed to "I'll be back".

Worst: Any episode that has this formula:
-April introduces some weird scientist or is directed by Burne to go to such a place
-Such scientist/henchmen kidnapps April, who is completely helpless
-No Shredder, Krang, Rat King, or Leatherhead in episode
-The scientist/henchmen simply uses guns that are pointless or uses weird ways to attack
-The turtles don't use their ninja weapons and instead use mousetraps such as throwing pizza or other objects at those enemies.

"The Missing Map" episode, good or bad, was what inspired my Shredder story in the first place, namely what the proof that would exonerate Hamato Yoshi and get Oroku Saki expelled from the Foot Clan might be. And that would make Oroku Saki act in a hurried panic as he did in my story.

As for the worst episodes, I thought "The Great Boldini" was actually worse than the "Mr. Ogg" one. Why would the Rat King want any artworks when he lives in the sewers?

As a kid, I liked watching Great Boldini because it was the only Rat King episode I owned on VHS, and I absolutely loved his background music.

So it's hard for me to dislike that particular episode. I even liked its VHS cover art (http://serialkillercalendar.com/VHSWASTELAND/HIGH-RES-VHS-COVERS/TEENAGE-MUTANT-NINJA-TURTLES-THE-GREAT-BOLDINI-BURGER-KING-KIDS-CLUB.jpg) that came in that Burger King promotional series. It was just a funny looking scene!

One of my least favorite episodes is Mutagen Monster. Why? The alternate Don line, "Those chemicals are mixing together to make mu-TUH-gin!"

Yeah, that was probably one of the worst displays of voice acting in the entire series... unless you wanna count Rob Paulson's take on Mr. Ogg. At least Rob's delivery was consistently annoying. No particular line stood out as being butchered.

Why would the Turtles and Splinter want artworks when they live in the sewers?

I liked Great Boldini, and the tickle tourture was fun.

I disliked most of season five for reason. It just seemed weak.

I like "My Brother, the Bad Guy". But why isn't it season 4 ending episode (switching Technodrome location)?

I agree. "Flat" is the word I use to describe it.

As someone who hasn't watched the original series in almost 20 years (yeah, I know... I'm a horrible person), the best I can say is that my absolute favourite episode of all time is "Sky Turtles", but that's probably just the biased opinion of a stupid kid. :D I wish I had a pair of anti-gravity boots.

-Such scientist/henchmen kidnapps April, who is completely helpless

But if it's Shredder kidnapps April and/or Irma? Happens in several episodes.

But Shredder's a master ninja! That makes a difference!

I agree, and also likes how he can take down the TMNT in "Incredible Shrinking Turtles" when he grabs the crystal, but it doesn't take to be a ninja to kidnap April and Irma.

Im surprised no one has mentioned "Four Musketurtles." Or "Case of the Hot Kimono."

I like those, especially April's aunt.
