View Full Version : Was it confirmed the new series was 2D or CG?

I now cannot remember if the show being CG was just speculation that got taken as fact or if that was really stated somewhere.
Is the Nick show going to be a regular cartoon or will it be CG? Do we know for sure?
Last i heard it was still going to be CG.

This was confirmed in the press release that announced Nick's purchase of the TMNT.

The thing is we've heard nothing since the buy out about what the series will be. It could end up being 2D after all. A lot can change in a year. Could also just be wishful thinking...
It would great if it was going to be 2D can only hope.

Really? I've yet to see good CGI on TV.
The hate seems to be on CG itself, so I'm gonna post a couple of CGI shows that have good 3D renders
Beast Wars (it was good for it's time)
Pocoyo
Clone Wars
Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends
Elias the little rescue boat
Father of the Pride
All have good qualities in animation, render, style, visual effects
Its only been stated in the press release when Nick bought he turtles, we've heard nothing since then. The only thing that hasn't been stated yet many are assuming as fact is that the new show will use OT characters but be more serious but that has never been stated. I mean it makes sense the OT is the most popular incarnation and all cartoons are more serious now than they were in the 90s but its still speculation.
Really? I've yet to see good CGI on TV.
Clone Wars, you may not like the character designs (based on Samurai Jack's Genndy Tartakovsky) but the CG is great. And Kiwamu is right there are plenty of shows that had great CG for the time though now may look dated. Also CG gets better with time, look at how much of a difference just some years had on the show reboot, the improvement is huge. I think TMNT 2007 looks amazing and that movie will be 5 years old when the new show comes out in 2012, thats a long time in computer years, it wouldn't surprise me if the show looks as good as TMNT 2007.
I'm 100% that when the designs are revealed people are going to bash it because its CG like we haven't known for the past two years that it was going to be CG. CG show designs always seems to have that affect, well most of the time. In fact I'm sure people will confuse character design with the quality of the CG with comments like "The CG sucks", while the CG might be good and they might not like the character designs. The same happens in 2D animation and people often mention "The animation sucks" but the animation is amazing what they don't like is the character designs, a recent example would be Spectacular Spiderman.

Its rather obvious they'll at least use Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady and likely the Technodrome. They're some of the most well known characters and PL isn't around to prevent them from using them.
Otherwise I agree we may not see any other OT characters, and Splinter's origin could go either way, but I'm sure Krang/Bebop/Rocksteady are shoe-in's at the very least.
Candy Kappa
02-17-2011, 09:47 AM
but there are a couple of concern I have, one is Splinter and his fur. Fur simulation is no walk in the park, and I doubt they'll use the same quality as Pixar and Dreamworks when it comes to Fur renders.
The other is not a huge concern, age. It's very depending of visualization, what render they're gonna use and how fluid the animation is. But CGI can easily age less gracefully like 2D animation

My problem with CGI animation made for TV series is while it might not look bad initially it will in 4 or 5 years. Reboot and Beast Wars both look awful to me. When I was a kid they looked fine but they did not age well. 2D animation however looks good forever, granted it's done well to begin with.

I was thinking this as I was looking at all the fan art above. Not that I really think they would but they could change the guy bandana colors or weapons if they wanted to, and that's just cosmetic stuff.
Kind of like how someone earlier in this thread I think mentioned Nick giving the guys girlfriends.

I doubt they'll change too much of what Turtles are at the very core of the matter. Sure, from what we understand, there'll be more "Teenage" to it than before, but there's a lot of brand recognition that needs to be kept intact for the parents (who grew up on TMNT) to know what they're looking at when kids say, "Buy me this useless piece of plastic, wallet slave!"

I do like the creativity of these pieces of fan art, but I agree I wouldn't want to see an official show featuring these designs. I wonder if there will be a trend trying to make the turtles more froglike in the coming years. Also, I'm guessing they will increasingly be portrayed as having abdominal muscles on their plastrons.

Right I knew it wasn't official, and never said it was, I just commented that I thought the style would look horrid in 3D. It would look like TMNT almost with how lanky they are. Given what he said plot wise it sounds like something a revamp for turtles would entail. It's a mix of the OT and 2K3. If he actually was pitching, or had pitched, that was probably based off what he was told to do. Who knows though. With so little info on this new series it's impossible to know what they're really doing.

Yeah, I agree. Nickelodeon didn't shell out sixty million just for the name recognition. They're bound to look fairly similar to the classic Turtle design.
Frankly, and I know I'm gonna get beaten down for this, but I wouldn't mind if they converted the classic 1987 cartoon designs to CG. Those are good, charming designs, and as long as they keep them from becoming too chubby, those designs could be used for humor, action, etc. Maybe add a little more texture to the kneepads and elbow pads.
Whatever they do, it's going to be a little weird knowing neither Eastman nor Laird was involved. I'm excited to see what they come up with. If it looks cool, I'll watch it. If I don't like it, I won't. I'd like some cool toys, though!

Man, I hope not. I know I'm not the target audience (I'm 31 years old after all) but I'd still like to see a cool, kinda gritty / kinda rock-n-roll TMNT cartoon. The best way I can think to describe it would be the packaging art of the 1988 series action figures, come to life.
(Or, barring that, a CG version of the 1987 series, because you can't go wrong with Krang.)
My only hopes are that 1) the character designs aren't too far off-base and 2) they don't turn it into a soap opera. Otherwise, I'm excited!

This is about where I stand. I prefer "Rock'n'Roll Grit" over anything when it comes to TMNT because that sort of grit can be taken in any direction and still be true to the idea.
Also, I've expressed my "Playmated TMNT packaging come to life" desire quite a few times.
It's hard to imagine it being super gritty in CGI, but I'll just have to wait and see.
If we ever got the Playmates packaging art as a cartoon I'd be able to die happy.

I don't understand why they changed up the toys so much. I guess they started working with another toy factory overseas or something? The best thing about the 25th anniversary was getting those gritty, detailed action figures back on the market. I hope to ALL GOD LIKE ENTITIES that they return to that format with the future releases.
I loved the old Turtle figures so much that I started buying the new ones when they came out. I only own a couple from the 2003 series and a couple from the 2007 movie (and except for the 2007 Splinter) they all look like crap compared to the Scumbugs and the Wyrms and the Boanfrogs and Panda Khans lined around them.

to fit the modern show. The old toys didn't follow the old show that accurate as the 200x toys did. Even toon based characters was fitted to go with the more grit/comic inspired toys

True.
I still think the new show and the new movie could have featured a LITTLE bit more detail in the figure. One of the things I liked the most about the older action figures was seeing the veins.

So Nick is still going for CGI?
WELL, not for nothing their CGI animation isn't THAT terrible to deserve so much hate. I am concerned how they would tackle it, and I think it would be a safe move to do 2d Animation instead. xD;
But I'm VERY optimistic about it.
I just want to look forward to every week for a new TMNT episode. XD
As long as it has a good plot and Keep the Characters we know and love, I'll be a happy fan.
*keeps fingers crossed*

Regarding those pieces of "concept art", the artist said on DA (mind you, I'm paraphrasing here) that "his 'guy' at Nick submissions said that those designs may be exactly what they're looking for".
Put a knife in my d*ck & call me Sarah.
Honestly, I think I would boycott the show. I realllllllllyyyyyyyyy hate those designs.

My concern is the story right now. I can get past character designs if the story is really engaging.
i'm kinda mixed on both

I have to disagree. I like those drawings. Infact I have one of them as my desktop wallpaper right now.

That's exactly my point... 2003 (and maybe the following year) were the last time they actually looked good.
