View Full Version : Was April made into a reporter so she would be like Lois Lane?

I remember David Wise saying the reason April became a reporter in the cartoon was he wanted her to be the Lois Lane of the Turtle series.
That way she'd always be covering the story of whatever was happening where the Turtles would have to save the day, similar to Lois Lane always covering stuff and Superman having to save her or find out what's going on.
Was April O'Neil like Lois Lane in this sense?
Also if you don't know who Lois Lane is, you should slap yourself.

He did in fact say that, I think on one of the DVD special features. If not there, then in this interview- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRUHMVbf_hg but don't quote me 'cause I don't wanna sit through both parts of this (seen it already though it's been a while).

I watched both parts of this video the other day (in prep for an upcoming TMNT fan commentary), and Wise never mentioned that point. I don't believe he was ever featured in any of the DVD special features (a real shame). Perhaps he's cited in a magazine interview or Web interview? Regardless of the quote's origin, it's almost certainly true that making April a reporter helped make her more essential to the action. Especially as opposed to an antique store owner or a perpetually out-of-work computer programmer. ZZZzzzz....
Seriously, Mirage April became pointless by Volume 2, and the only recourse left for 4Kids April after "Secret Origins" was to make her into a highly competent ninja. I really think she works best as a reporter.

It's probably to give April a more dynamic life, and a good reason she'd be hanging around when the Turtles save the day.

He was. I know it for a fact. I don't recall which exactly, though I'd bet my life on it.

Though I was planning to sharpen my kitchen knives, Powder is indeed justified in his claim. Wise appeared on the special feature from Season 7: Disc 3. Curses...
And he does explain his decision to make April into the "Lois Lane" character.
Point Powder.

Lame reimagining of the character if you ask me. But hey, couldn't imagine the good ole' OT any other way :)

besides them both being reporters did they have that much else in common?

Yeah, that makes sense...If April would've been a librarian or say an HR rep, I am sure she would have no reason to be involved with TMNT
It did seem like it was hard for the writers to fit April into plots in the 2k3 show so I think the reporter thing actually works out. I also don't see any similarities between April and Lois even if both are reporters that get kidnapped a lot. April was also a newscaster not just a writer, her personality was very different, she actually is friends with the turtles as in knowing their identities and whatnot.
For future Aprils I'd kinda like a free-lance reporter from the later seasons of the OT, that way she can be pretty tech savvy as well, I'm not too big of a fan of her Lab work with Stockman Mirage origin though, she's bright but Donatello already feels that role and surpasses her in every way making her obsolete for the most part and a bit boring. I also like what they've mostly incorporated in recent canons about her learning to fight and being able to hold her own somewhat. A straight newscaster like the early OT would be boring to see again. Mixing different Aprils into one does make her a better character though, thats what I hope for future iterations.

By "hanging around" I meant she'd be actually there with a camera and record them in their crime fighting.
Which is pretty much her role in the episodes. Next to being kidnapped.
Seriously compare how many episodes April is in in the OT to her 2K3 counterpart. That should tell something.

Archie!April is the best incarnation of her IMHO (I just wish she didn't look like Ariel).
But I think I'd want her to be a cop in a future installment... course that would be difficult with the firearms thing...

April as a reporter really drove the plot in many episodes of the OT. Without her uncovering various plots of the Foot or breaking stories on new technological advancements (Rex-1, super lasers, new energy sources, etc.) the turtles would have never gotten involved in crimefighting (since they were mostly homebodies and couch potatoes that didn't go out on patrol much) and Shredder would have never known what to steal next!:tlol:
Her job just fit well with the tone of the show that revolved around mad scientists and wacky science. She reminds me of Lois Lane from the Fleischer Superman shorts.
