As I grew with the Turtles, I kind of stopped watching the Old Toon in favor of the 2k3 toon - so for awhile now I've stuck to the comics, 2k3 toon, and the movies. Yet recently I've been getting back into the Old Toon. I mean, it is what got me hooked on TMNT as a child in the first place.

Anyway, I started thinking this morning after watching a few episodes of the OT that people who did not know the Mirage comics might have been shocked at the Raphael of Movie 1. I think out of all the TMNT, Raphael was the one who went through the biggest transformation from comic to toon, and then once the movie came out (thankfully) Raphael was adapted to the screen to fit his Mirage counter-part rather than his toon. I wonder, were people who watched TMNT 1 (without prior comic knowledge) the first time thinking something like "where did this angry Turtle come from?" when watching Raphael?

I saw a link posted by oldmanwinters called "X-Entertainment: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Food" and came across this tidbit that further peaked my curiousity on the subject:

Hearing that Raphael is "cool, but rude" in the cartoon theme song is one thing. Hearing a gangsta rap about how much of a badass he was is something else entirely.

My thoughts exactly! I never realized how big of a transformation Raphael went through really, from comic to toon then toon to movie. Now, maybe there are some episodes of the OT that showcase Raph's moody side, but I don't remember anything in specific. Like I said though, I've just been coming back to the OT in the recent weeks and there could be some episodes that I don't remember that make this "discovery" not so interesting afterall.

"Raphael. He's the leader of the group, transformed from the norm by the nuclear goop. . . ."

Haha! Even as a kid I was like "what the heck?" when they said that line! Ya think somebody involved in putting that song on there would have *caught* that one.

I dunno. I was a kid when I finally saw the 1st movie in local TV, and it didn't shock me how violent Raph was to his OT counterpart.

But then again I watched that He-Man/She-Ra christmas movie where Skeletor was a good guy so I just assumed it was a movie thing. :p

I wonder, were people who watched TMNT 1 (without prior comic knowledge) the first time thinking something like "where did this angry Turtle come from?" when watching Raphael? This is an interesting question. I didn't have much knowledge of the Mirage comics at all at that point, and didn't know much about them until the mid 90s after the "Turtle Craze" was dying down. Anyway, when I saw Raph in the movie, I loved it. Didn't bother me at all that he was "angry". It fit in so well with the story, I didn't think much of it. Either way, for movie 1, Raph was my favorite. I think I took more notice of Splinter's backstory changing (since I hadn't read the comics at that point) than with Raph's anger.Hearing that Raphael is "cool, but rude" in the cartoon theme song is one thing. Actually, the line is "Raphael is cool but crude", which describes OT Raph to a T. He is crude. His sarcastic remarks show that, as well as his bluntness. A good example of his "crudeness" is in The Star Child, where the Star Child was complaining that everyone hated him. Mikey was trying to reassure him that that wasn't true, as the kid was prone to throwing tantrums and destroying things when upset (I still say that Star Child killed those guys in the tank he blew up). Raph butt in and straight up said, "I hate him." How blunt can one person be, right? That's ultimate crudeness there, as it shows that he lacks tact. Raph's character, I noticed, didn't seem to beat around the bush with stuff, and would come right out and say if he dislikes something or not, like in the case with the Star Child.
