The first three pages of this thread will consist of speculation, as until then, it wasn't confirmed. It now is, courtesy Alex Deligiannis (AKA Toon).
I gotta say (haha) it's pretty rad being the first dude to post it.

This picture was copyright Nick on The Wall Street Journal website, and accompanied this article which states more info is to come in about a week. Could this actually be their new look? EDIT: Why yes, it is actually! It is somewhat close to the TMNT designs at first glance, but still infinitely better than them... I could dig the hand-wraps too. Note that Mikey's chucks have been replaced with a Kusari-gama (I personally think that's rad)!

Viacom Inc.'s Nickelodeon is betting that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles still have some fight left in them. The cable channel spent $60 million to acquire the global rights to the franchise and plans to offer a new television version of the series using computer-generated animation in 2012.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were introduced in 1984.

Ciro Nieli, an executive producer of the new Turtles series, says that the coming computer-animated version will be slightly different than past incarnations. The four turtle protagonists, who previously could only be distinguished by the color of their masks, will each have "more individual attributes," Mr. Nieli says. The show will stress their martial-arts combat abilities, he adds.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were first launched in 1984, and have spawned comics, toys, movies and other products. "The TMNT generation is now of the age where they both have children to share with and look to reconnect with their own childhood," said Joe Wos, executive director the ToonSeum, a Pittsburgh cartoon museum.

Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com's box-office division, says that because the 2007 movie "TMNT" grossed just $54.1 million at the domestic box office, "some of the magic" may have worn off the franchise. However, Mr. Dergarabedian said via email that "I think a re-booted version could still find favor with audiences given the long-time popularity of these characters." Nickelodeon plans to help reintroduce Turtles toys to the marketplace and Paramount has a feature-length movie in development with filmmaker Michael Bay ("Transformers").

This week, Nickelodeon is to announce details about new shows that are planned for the network, including the fantasy cartoon "The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra" (a follow-up to the network's "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series) and "Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness," an animated show made in collaboration with DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. that is a spinoff of the blockbuster "Kung Fu Panda" movie franchise. "Kung Fu Panda" will will make its debut later this year, with "Korra" to follow in 2012.

Cyma Zarghami, president of the Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group, says Nickelodeon spends $600,000-$700,000 per episode to make its animated shows. The network's computer-animated offerings are "a bit more expensive," she says.

The average viewer of Nickelodeon is 11 years old, but some of the new programs might attract older fans. "Korra" features characters who are in their late teens. "It's kind of like the show has grown up," says "Korra" co-creator Bryan Konietzko. "A lot of the viewers have grown up since the show was last on."

The new programs are part of a broader strategy at Nickelodeon to bulk up its animated offerings, especially on Saturday mornings. "Animation is the life blood of kids television," Ms. Zarghami says. "Cartoons last longer, they play around the globe, and they repeat better than live-action shows."

Is it just me or is this slightly Dooney inspired. In most of his recent turtle art he always draws them with slightly different stitch belts. Leo, Raph and Don's look like his design. Also he mostly draws Don with an Ipod and if you look closely Don seems to have ear phones sticking out of belt.

I'm no expert but I think it's a manrikigusari, I believe they can come with a blade on one end. That would make sense as Mike wielded one #9 of the comic and in the first season of the old show. I'd prefer his chuks though.

I really like that image, and it does look like it can translate well into CG. Jester was indeed a killjoy with his post but I guess don't kill the messenger, at least the weapon he has is freaking cool so it does soften the blow a bit. Hope the image is real, and if it isn't at least there is still hope that Mikey has nunchucks. By the way the info of Avatar(ugh) The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra came out just like an hour or so ago so maybe the new info of TMNT will follow very soon?

Well most weapons are illegal to carry around, when I took weapons class we were told that a cane was the only thing you could carry around and use as a weapon since everything else was illegal. but that doesn't mean they can't be portrayed in animation or even live action shows.

I wouldn't have minded the grappling hook as much in the OT if it wasn't for the fact that every turtle had the same grappling hook. They should have at least given him something unique for him. I did like that at least they showed Mikey using his chucks and the grappling hook during a few episodes before switching into only grappling hooks, at least there was a transition instead of just randomly using a grappling hook out of nowhere. My personal in-universe reason is that for the type of adventures the OT turtles had a grappling hook was more helpful and counting he already mastered the chucks he decided to master the grappling hook.

I couldn't agree more. These designs are truly awesome. I love the width of the belts, and the movie-era design.

I know this is just speculation, but man, I really hope that this is the new look. I am a big fan of those hand-wraps. This is so much better than what I expected...

Yeah, they're definitely illegal in New York, however if you want them you can still get them. I've ordered plenty of them off websites, eBay...nobody really cares. I used to study karate and they held nunchaku classes once every few weeks. The question of legality never came up, my most obvious speculation would be because they avoided it, lol.

I actually can't tell them very much apart in the movies(first three), I mean they all act like goofballs, Raph is the easiest since he is the "angry" one but the others is hard to tell especially since Donnie doesn't do much tech wise, mikey's jokes are used by everyone and leo is just there.

Hm...I agree that Donny doesn't do much tech wise, although they did show him tinkering with a gadget down in the lair. But besides that, I think they're all pretty distinct. I understand what you're saying, that Mikey's jokes were used by everyone, but that is sort of unfair to say --- maybe a few jokes were uncalled for and should have went to Mikey (for instance, it always bugged me that Don was the one that brought the marshmellows to the campfire...should have been Mikey) but I think it's obvious that Leonardo, for example, is not as big of a jokester as Mikey.

Well, we don't know that for sure...in my opinion, that artwork is wayyy better than what I expected Nick to deliver, so if that is indeed the designs, then hope is restored, at least for me. Besides the question of the nunchaku, and perhaps the similarity between the TMNT4 designs, what's not to like here? It's a re-design, sure, but it completely keeps with the movie/mature-image. It even looks dark to me. That's also what I was hoping for, though. If you were hoping for an 80s like revamp I suppose I'd understand disappointment...

REALLY digging these new designs. I like that they have a different look to them than both the 1988 and 2K3 incarnations, but are still recognizable and have a look all their own. It's cool that Nick isn't changing them too dramatically, but still updating their look a bit. Some aspects of the designs remind me a bit of Next Mutation, actually. Let's hope they look just as good in CGI! Definitely looking forward to hearing more about this new show in the coming months. :D

It's the blade of his Kama, with a chain and weight it's called a kusarigama.

As for being ninja, it's more suitable then the Nunchucks. Why Raph still have sai, I think we can blame Elektra for that :P

So I missed this whole thread until just now, so I will just sum up my opinions.

1. Awesome. I was expecting far more childish, cartoony nicktoons art. This art is great, I just hope it looks as good in cgi.

2. I will miss the 'chucks, but Mikey's new weapon is sweet. He is my fav so they better not make him a blithering idiot. This is a good sign.

3. I am very excited about this now.

Now that its official, I love the designs I was definitely not expecting that, I thought they would be much more polarizing. I wasn't expecting "kiddy" designs but I thought they'd resemble more the proposed Kids WB! series kid friendly designs than these. I also thought they'd be much more stylized like say the Star Wars Clone Wars CG show. They definitely remind me a lot of the 2007 film and in fact I think the CG will not be too far off from the movie, after all when this show premiers that will be 5 year old CG. Heck I'm sure if nothing contradicts it I'll try to fit the movie in continuity. The turtles have different skin tones too, thats nice.

As far as playmates I'm sure they'll go along the trend of 3" 3/4 figures, they're cheaper to make and everyone is doing them. If they re-tool anything it'd be the comic book turtles they didn't release, but I doubt it since these turtles all have distinct looks, though I do think we'll eventually see the comic book turtles.

As far as the nunchucks it really does suck a lot even if they did soften the blow with an awesome weapon. But lets look back at Mikey's chucks. In the OT he stopped using them in early season 4 which means most of the show he spent with just a grappling hook every turtle had. I don't think the weapons were used much during Archie either so we didn't see Mikey with chucks for a lot of time either. The second and third(?) movies also lacked nunchucks. The Next Mutation had Mikey using some Tonfa looking weapons so no chucks. The 2007 film shafted Donatello and Mikey for the most part so we didn't see much of his weapons there either. So overall only the Mirage comics and the 2k3 show have had Mikey featuring his nunchucks for a decent amount of time. This also doesn't spell the end of nunchucks forever, by the time a new show is made I'm sure attitudes could have relaxed and we could see them I mean if this show lasts 6 years and takes a 4 year break before a new show thats 10 years. Also I don't think this affects the movie in any way so we'll probably see them there. Still its a little bit sad to lose them.


Something dawned on me as I was driving home from work: Will this series have Usagi? With Peter no longer involved, would Stan still allow Usagi to be in the series?
I think I've mentioned this before, Laird and Stan did have a good relationship but Nick could still ask Stan and I doubt he'd deny, why would he? Free publicity for his character and he gets paid. As long as the people involved know the history of the turtles and Usagi then they'd ask Nick if they'll do it which I guess if Fred Wolf and 4Kids agreed I don't see why not unless they really don't want to license a non-tmnt character.

However, I will say that I am a bit confused here. They look both 3D and 2D at the same time in this pic and it's kinda throwing me off a bit. It's really bad with Leo. Parts of his body is more 3D than his head and other parts, so Leo's head seems dismembered to me.

Granted, that most likely won't be a problem when everything is moving in animation. It's just me being nit-picky.

Yeah, they're definitely illegal in New York, however if you want them you can still get them. I've ordered plenty of them off websites, eBay...nobody really cares. I used to study karate and they held nunchaku classes once every few weeks. The question of legality never came up, my most obvious speculation would be because they avoided it, lol.

Well - they look like Ninja Turtles. I would have been excited to see the '87 cartoon Turtles realized in CG, but these designs aren't bad... even if they do look like Ninja Turtles video game advertising art. I really want to see them in motion.

In all honesty I think it's a far less abrasively kiddy/hyper-exaggerated look than what I was expecting.

The wrappings around the hands/wrists/feet seem weird. I think they'd bother me less if they were brown or leather-colored, maybe. As-is, they look like half-mummies or something.

I absolutely love the look! I am so happy that they don't look too cartoony. This gives me a lot of faith that they are going to treat the turtles right. I am a little but upset about no chucks for Mikey but I watched some real life demos of that new weapon on youtube and I have to say that's a pretty sweet replacement. The only problem I see in giving Mikey a bladed weapon is that this is a kid's show, which means he won't be able to use it on any of his enemies (much like Leo's swords and the point end of Raph's sais).

I liked that at least Mikey and Don could knock Foot Soldiers around with their weapons.

But if this new cartoon borrows as much from the Fred Wolf series as it supposedly might, we may end up with robot Foot Soldiers, so I guess it's a moot point.


As for the style, I like it and am not too purturbed with the "flipper" hands. But it's all a matter of seeing how these designs translate to CG animation that's the real selling point.

Based on the promo art it seems like the new show won't be OT heavy, I mean that was never confirmed just made sense and speculated. I do hope we see more OT elements though, I love a more realistic version as well but my love for the turtles is also nostalgic so I'd love to see the things that made my childhood so damn amazing.

I wonder if we will indeed get more news this week or if this is it, I'm guessing this is it and even if we get a press release or something it won't have really any new info. I'm guessing until SDCC that we find out more about the show and see April/Shredder/Splinter.

Well, It's cool simply because it is TMNT and I'm glad to have any incarnation of the green teens than none. However.... I don't care for the wraps, it reminds me too much of the Next Mutation. Plus they just look kind of goofy, I like the art for solely being art, it's very, very attractive, but not as the look of a TV series. I want the real Turtles, but that's just me. I've followed the Turtles for 23 years now, there have been some good things and some bad things and I can only wish for their glory to return to what it once was. Now don't get me wrong, this is good stuff and it looks good, I'm trying to keep this from coming off as me complaining, but it doesn't strike a chord in my heart like other incarnations have. I will love the Turtles and support them regardless of what we get... in order to keep their legacy alive. I can only hope that the movie at least has more to offer, for my own sake anyway and other fans like me.

The feelings are mutual. The artwork is cool and I'll continue to support the property buts its far from what I had hoped for. I'm keeping in mind this is the first image released and I'd like to see some more including what they'll look like with their final 3D renderings. On the otherhand I'm a 2d kind of guy so I was never for them going 3D either

So what exactly did people expect? This artwork looks far darker than I would suspect, as I expected the Turtles to look more child-friendly or "fun" similar to the old toon Turtles.

The fact that their arm/leg bands are all brown, and they don't have initials on their belts is a good sign. Leo has the right look on his face, Raph looks angry, Don looks a bit too happy, and Mike is somewhat goofy looking.

But given this is CG, it all depends on if the animation is done well.

The new series isn't even close to ready to be released that soon. So, although I can't remember ATM what was stated that implied TMNT after KCA, it has been determined they were talking about running the 4Kids series, if anything.

I really like the wraps. That was the one part I loved about the NM design. It was just overdone. This is juuuuust right. :)

I also like how the weapons aren't in matching colors with the bandanas. That was my least favorite part about the 2k3 designs.

It does seem odd the first artwork of the series has Mike with a new weapon, while all the other Turtles have their signature weapons.

This was purposely revealed by Viacom as the first image of the new TMNT, and they could have pictured Mike or the others with any other weapon.

If they do have him use nunchucks perhaps there is some storyline behind this in the show, or perhaps they're saving it for Season 2 or something like that.

I like the design on this I can really get behind these. Raph looks like a badass. So fierce and I like that. Leo looks awsome as well. But as predicted Don and Mike still look kinda goofy. WTH? They really bitched up Mike's face too, man that's some serious ugly. I'm hoping for a Michelangelo I could actually like but based on his stupid expression it seems we might be getting the same fare as usual with Mike's personality. As for Mike's not having chuck in this show? Meh, I don't care. I always thought Mike would be kickass with a kuseri gama and now it seems he might get one. I hope they have him use it correctly instead of swinging the blade around like this weapon has been depicted being used on other media (like Inuyahsa)

Forgive me if this has already been asked or answered (don't feel like wading through ten pages of thread at this time) but has there been any knowledge/speculation about whether Bryan and Mike, the creators of Avatar, might have any involvement in the new TMNT show? If so, I think that would be awesome and couldn't imagine the TMNT cartoon in better hands (beyond Laird or Eastman that is). I recently finished watching through Avatar for the first time and I'm amazed at the quality of the writing, the fight scenes, characters, everything. In fact it has a very similar feel that TMNT 2k3 does in terms of quality. Did TMNT 2k3 ever use life action reference for the fight scene like Avatar did? I could just imagine Sifu Kisu and crew doing some awesome stuff for ther new TMNT show, hopefully he'll be a consultant if nothing else.

Anyway, my point is Nickolodeon seems to be going rather heavy with martial arts themed cartoons - Korra, TMNT, Kung FU Panda, and I personally can't wait. And even if Bryan and Mike aren't involved with TMNT since Korra might keep them too busy, I still think Nick is the right network for TMNT.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

This picture was copyright Nick on The Wall Street Journal website, and accompanied this article which states more info is to come in about a week. Could this actually be their new look? EDIT: Why yes, it is actually! It is somewhat close to the TMNT designs at first glance, but still infinitely better than them... I could dig the hand-wraps too. Note that Mikey's chucks have been replaced with a Kusari-gama (I personally think that's rad)!

Thanks for the clean up. I can see Raph's eye's now. I love that his sais aren't perfect. Since they have no way of buying their weopons they no doubt made them by themselves and it looks like it. Notice how the Katana in Leo's left hand has a piece missing at the tip.

I really doubt Mike and Bryan from the Last Airbender would get involved. The Legend of Korra is going to be aired next year too (and based from the creator commentaries from my DVD copies of the show, the first one made them really really busy).

I like Butch Hartman. His Danny Phantom series is pretty good with a nice blend of action and comedy. But I also doubt he'd show up either.

On another note, I saw the chip in Leo's katana day one, and noticed Raph's sai as well. After careful consideration I came to the conclusion that the sai isn't bent, it's merely an optical illusion based on the angle Raph is holding his sai. Follow his wrist and the angle his hand is at and it matches up with the angle of the sai. The back prong is farther back and elevated above the front prong, making it look as if it was bent.

Also, Mike's eyes are blue again...I never cared too much for that aspect since the others' had brown eyes, but Raph's eyes look yellowish or honey-colored. Neat. :)

Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure that Mikey's eyes were blue in the Archie series. I guess they weren't for the OT series. Still an interesting weapon choice for Mikey.

I still wonder how and where they managed to get their weapons from. I would say that Splinter brought them with him when he came to America, but that wouldn't work for the original continuity of the series, his being an actual mutated rat and all.

I wonder if the weapons were brought over by Yoshi and Splinter went back to his old master's place and picked them up. Nah...probably would've been confiscated by police after his murder.

After pondering this art for a few days, I'm wondering what the deal is with all the bandages. I think that's what makes this look more like fan-art.

The wrist wraps are okay, I guess, but the foot and leg wraps make them look like they were backed over by the Turtle Van. Maybe they're only on this piece of presentation art and aren't such a big part of the actual designs on the show. Plus, I miss the letters on the belt buckles.

I'm warning you, Nickelodeon! This is one 32 year old married man with no children who may not spend several dollars on your merchandise unless you reconsider these character designs!

For me, the skinny limbs and big forearms / lower legs remind me of the Teen Titans cartoon. Also, the expressions.

The forearms and lower legs don't bother me, though, because they channel the old Mirage comics pretty well. I just wish they looked more "1980s comix gritty" and less "Teen Titans," or more "old-school cartoon chubby" and less "Teen Titans."

But then again, I didn't pay $60 million for them...

It's okay. You will never beat the old 1980s toy/cartoon logo, but this logo seems to fit the new Turtle design better than the old one ever would. Still, nothing really distinctive or "turtley" about this, as far as the actual font being used. Kinda wish they used the Mirage one, maybe without the blood...

How do we know TMNTMaster is legit though? The new logo if legit is nice, a bit "gritty" definitely not what I expected, then again also the concept art is more serious than I thought it'd be.

As far as the Teen Titans stuff, the never said the show would look like teen titans, those designs are from Derrick J Wyatt, who als did Transformers Animated, he is not in this show at all. It was only mentioned that people from the TT cartoon were involved in the new show, frankly I doubt anything related to TT will be in the show, just because they worked in the show doesn't mean every show will be like it..

Now for some Rampant speculation, I don't think this show will have many OT things like we all thought, from the little we've seen it looks like a more serious interpretation. We might not have mutants everywhere which will get some people happy. I like a more serious take on the turtles but now that Laird is out of the picture I really want to see the stuff that Laird would have never allowed.
