View Full Version : How do you feel about 26 episodes confirmed for Season 1?

The show has been officially greenlit for 26 episodes, which is most likely going to be Season 1. This is similar to the 4kids series which also had 26 episodes for Season 1.

If it continues with 26 episode seasons like this and goes on for 5-7 years, we'll have yet another TMNT show with over 150 episodes.

I'm glad we'll have another long lasting TMNT show to add to the list.

I feel fine about it. It's good, I guess. Why sooooo many threads? I know we have a new section to play with but it's like an orgy right now.

I just hope they can pull it off without having to resort to filler eps too often (in other words, more often than 2K3 did).

There is no such thing as, "filler" in TMNT.

Not every story has to be about Shredder and the Foot Clan. Thank goodness we have them fighting normal criminals or other mutants and aliens in episodes.

Originally, I thought to myself, "What is there to think about it?"

Then, it came to me: 26 is good! 26 sounds like Nick trusts that what they're doing with the TMNT will do really well. I expected something more along the lines of 13, really.

Legend of Korra was given 12 episodes the first time that news came out. Now it's been expanded for 26.

TMNT will probably do the same.

Will it be 26 30-minute episodes or 26 15-minute episodes?

I would prefer seeing 26 full-length eps but the norm in cartoons these days is to call 15 minutes an episode (I'm looking at you "Phineas and Ferb" and "Spongebob").

Heh, looks like I'm going to be stocking up on DVDs soon to record them off on so I won't have to worry about waiting to do that in 2012, when the show finally hits the airwaves.

I think he's confusing some of the OT eps with a couple of the eps from the second season of the SWAT Kats, when the production folks did two seperate eps in one 30-minute period. Can't remember the ones exactly at the moment, but H-B did that in the show's second season.

Unless he's thinking about when the OT ran for an hour, as part of the CBS Action Zone, with those ecology tip-things in between then?:tconfuse: That's all that I can think of that he's refering to.

26 ep seasons are great because by season 4 we'll already have 104 episodes. Since we're bound to get at least 7 seasons if the series is successful we should make it to 150 eps easily.

If we are lucky we may hit 200 episodes.

heh, you sure are optimistic, CyberCubed!

I would consider Teen Titans and The Batman to be recent example of "successful" children's action/adventure shows, and they only lasted five 13-episode seasons each.

I will consider Nick's TMNT cartoon "successful" if it goes three seasons, although I really try not to raise my hopes to anything more than two, which would still be a very respectable installment of 52 episodes (assuming they stick with the 26 format). I hope it doesn't go the route of other quality shows like Wolverine and the X-Men and The Spectacular Spider-Man which were abruptly canned after a mere 26 episodes.:tsad:

But DC mandates that all its shows don't go above 52/65 episodes, because they always want to make yet another Batman cartoon to sell toys. This is why we see a new version of Batman every 5 years now.

Nick on the other hand has no reason to kill off the Turtles just to bring them back 2-3 years later (what sense would that make?), so instead having one long lasting show till sales die off makes more sense.

Besides, this is TMNT. We are used to having long lasting shows with hundreds of episodes. I see no reason not to expect 150 episodes at the bare minimum.

Seems pretty common now for a series to hit 56 episodes and end. I was surprised as hell to see 2K3 surpass that and then some. I seem to recall Nick having some pretty sporadic release dates with their toons. I just hope the first season is self contained so if they decided to not make anymore it at least has an ending. Wolverine and The X-men was like this and it mostly works if I choose to ignore the last minute of the final episode.

My biggest concern is now turtles is owned by Viacom. They will only let companies under their umbrella make TMNT stuff. It's not like Mirage where they can shop it around to everyone. If this series ends we may not see another turtles one for a very long time, if at all, unless they sell the rights off again.

sdp
03-13-2011, 01:11 PM
Well lets look at it this way, if Viacom had not bought the turtles then we had no reason to expect a new cartoon any time soon either, not to mention cartoons take a while to make, Viacom announced a new show as soon as they got the franchise and its not going to be out until 2012. So yeah I think it would have been a long time before we got any new TMNT shows, especially since the 4kids wasn't particularly a big hit. Only chance would have been if the new movie would have gathered interest or if the movie was a success which they were planning for a 2011 release date. Then again Laird would have still been in charge so that means he had to approve the concept so if a company said "OH we want a new version of the OT" he would have said no, and also didn't 4kids hold the rights to new cartoons or something? That also meant that they couldn't shop around for rights since 4kids had them and they had just finished a not very successful run. But you're right, Nick owns many iconic Nicktoons that they could revive and they'd be popular and they choose not to so yeah it could be many years before we see anything once the 2012 show ends.

As for the new show reaching 150 episodes, I really don't think thats a given or that a a 65 episode run would be unsuccesful. I mean the OT only reached that high number of episodes because of how popular they were so S3 and S4 especially had a huge order of episodes, if they hadn't been so big then i would have never even reached 100. It just kinda survived for the last few seasons with very few episodes per season. The NT also had special circustances, since all three parties involved had their own reasons to keep it afloat, Laird wanted his baby on the air and he had the money from the OT to do it. Playmates first few years with 2k3 were good so they wanted to continue and try to re-create their OT figure sales with the new show and their most succesful line, also the movie figure line sold well so they tried to continue the show based on that. And 4kids seemed to want to not only be known for dubbing anime but to be their own animated properties as well, not to mention 4Kids still had a ton of money that Pokemon and even YuGiOh was making them, they had money to spare. They also owned the 4kids animated block and needed to fill it with stuff and TMNT provided something that they didn't already have. So yeah there were many factors for 2k3 lasting as long as it did since the show was never particualry popular and the toyline only really did well early on. You can bet had the show been on KidsWB! or Cartoon Network it may not have even reached a standard 52/65 episode run nor would it have had 26 episode seasons that definitely helped 2k3 reach over 100 episodes. Lets look at Avatar:TLA, amazing show, critically praised, great DVD sales and it only lasted 60ish episodes. The creators said thats all the story they had planned out but come on, if Nick really wanted they could have made more seasons whether they wanted to or not. Not to mention by the third season of the show Nick treated the show absolutely horribly, ask anyone who followed the show during the third season, they didn't care at that point. So yeah, no number of episodes is guaranteed.

I do think now that Viacom owns the turtles there is actually a higher chance of seeing the turtles in a more Mirage faithful adult version that Andrew NDB would approve. Mirage had the franchise for 25 years and never had the opportunity to make it, so even if they had it for another 25 years I doubt they could have gotten one, however Viacom was ok with making Ren and Stimpy Nick cartoon into an adult version for SpikeTV when they saw there was an audience. Sure that failed terribly but thats irrelevant. And actually the 52/65 episode rule now that SATAM cartoons are over doesn't seem to be used as much I've noticed. We're also seeing more shows with 26 episode orders instead of 13. Especially true for Nick, this is why early 90s Nicktoons got only the standard runs while less successful newer nicktoons got far more, Nick changed their stand on that. If a show is succesful it can run for more, definitely.

26 episodes is about what I was expecting though I wouldn't have been surprised by a 13 episode season either.

It's good to know they are giving it 26 episodes from the get go. If it does well and continues to do well this could be the longest lasting TMNT series in the end. That'd be tough to accomplish but not impossible. However, the danger is Nick isn't going to give up the license so if the show doesn't do well enough to get several more season or Nick cancels it after a few simply for not managing Spongebob numbers then we may never get another TMNT series. So 26 is a strong start and hopefully it grows from there.

CyberCubed
03-14-2011, 11:24 AM
Nick will probably sell off TMNT to a third party if they're done with the franchise. They're not going to keep the TMNT IP locked away in a vault after they're done with it, they'll sell it off to make some money to a new company.

sdp
03-14-2011, 03:39 PM
I doubt Nick would sell, they haven't really sold any of their franchises before. Nick is sitting on plenty of iconic characters with no plans to ever revive them. Then again Disney is known for keeping stuff locked in their vault regardless of people being interested yet they sold Power Rangers, a first for Disney. Then again that may have had to do with the contract they have with Toei and if they stopped making the show it would expire and another company would be able to adapt Super Sentai in the US just under a different name than Power Rangers, so maybe that was the reason Disney actually sold and there is no such contract for TMNT.

In other words, we won't know until Nick has green-lighted them.
