View Full Version : Seasons 9 and 10 theory

Hello all,
Something dawned on me as I watched my Volume 5 (season 3 disk 3) of the OT, how many episodes did FHE release when we were lil' tykes? I ask, because I wanna say the 1st 8 seasons saw VHS releases, right? Seasons 9 and 10 were never released on VHS...right?
Come to think of it...some of season 10 was released with the 1st OT DVD, so maybe I'm totally off base, but I've heard people say the OT DVDs almost look like they used the VHS tapes as source files...could that explain away the fact we have no DVD of season 9 and part of 10?

To be honest the thought has crossed my mind as well.

So I'm not totally crazy. Thanks Vaughn.

But by that logic, shouldn't Lionsgate have released "Planet of the Turtleoids" and "Once Upon a Time Machine"/aka, Turtles' Awesome Easter" on DVD?
I can't imagine that would be an issue, considering most of the OT was never released on VHS and half of Season 10 has already been released. I guess only Fred Wolf knows for sure.

True...since my "research" after the fact, has played that out. Heck, Teenagers from Dimension X, The Cat Woman from Channel Six, Return of the Technodrome, Beneath These Streets, Turtles on Trial, Attack of the 50 Foot Irma weren't ever on VHS...I think. (There are many, many more...it's just these were from season 2 and were all in sequence.)

Well, at least for these two episodes, I know they were released in the UK and other countries. Just not here in the USA.

But, yeah, I don't see how the fact they didn't get a VHS release would prevent them from being released. Some episodes (like Pizza by the Shred, IIR) have the obvious tracking lines that suggest they were just transferred over from a video tape.

So we're back to "too cost prohibitive" as the reason we have no saeson 9 and 10.

No, its the fact that Season 8 came out during 2009, the "25th anniversary."
In 2010 everything TMNT was dead, so I think Lionsgate didn't want to release a DVD in a dead period.
We'll see if we get more old toon DVDs later this year or when the Nick era starts.

I have all of season 9 and 10 on VHS tape from original airings, so if they're really that desperate maybe I should get in touch with them?
Honestly, I think the real reason is simply because sales were diminishing on the OT DVDs. I mean outside of our core group of diehard fans that are intent on completing the series no matter how bad it was at times, I would say the "casual nostalgia buyer" probably bought a DVD or two and got their fix.
The only thing that would've kept sales afloat at a respectable level would be to have the continued mainstream backing of new movies, new cartoons, action figures, reruns of the old series, video games, etc. You need the interest level to be high (for kids and adults) for sales to continue where they need to be.
Then add on to that, the fact that seasons 9 & 10 are short seasons, without the memorable villains, that already had low viewership to being with 15 years ago, and you've basically got a recipe for low sales.
I suspect also that since this is all they've got left to release, they are likely waiting for Nick to come out with the new series, at which point they'll probably rerelease the whole series in one package along with the 3 missing eps so we're all forced to pay $150+ all over again.

i hope to hell that doesn't happen. i want Lionsgate to release seasons 9 and 10 as seperate volumes.

I can't answer a question for you if you get impatient and answer it before I even read the question. :P

Which I'm perfectly okay with as long as the disk and box art work doesn't look like that horrid 2K3 OT mash up. I've been wanting a box set from the start. LG makes good ones too. Ones actually shaped like a box that fit on shelves nicely.
I wish 2K3 would get a complete series set as well while we're on the subject.

I was in touch with their art dept numerous times over the years trying to get them to let me illustrate the packaging art for them to remedy this, for whatever the reason they seem really sold on that 2K3 hyrbid art. I was bummed too. Especially since it was actually being done in-house and they were paying for that art, it wasn't just reused stock art.

Well they obviously did it to trick kids into thinking it was 2K3. There's no other logical explanation for it. If these new sets come out they will probably try to emulate the Nick series in look.
Or someone will smack sense into them and they might use the hundreds of pre-existing OT artwork that's been decorating t-shirts at Hot Topic for years now.

Just a note to anyone who recorded the show at home back when it was airing on CBS: All I need is a clean copy of Carter, the Enforcer to have a complete collection of Seasons 9 & 10. After I get a complete set, well, I might be motivated to do something with it.

Lazy ignorance is a logical explanation.

As a joke, should send them copies of your recordings, with a note attached reading: "Get to it."

They never made use of the Turtleoids or Easter tapes I sent 'em... which are on my shelf because... umm... because they at least had the decency to return 'em. True story! :embarass:
Seriously, though... I lost count of how many times I offered them and was ignored. So, I really doubt that having copies to work with was ever the issue.

Does anyone know if Nick's buyout is what's preventing Lionsgate from releasing any more DVDs?
I think I will cry if the entire original series doesn't come out on DVD.

Quality wise some of mine are better than others, but I'll try and dig that one out soon and check it out for you.

Don't believe so, those episodes were never the property of Mirage studios, and only the Mirage assets were acquired by Nick in the sale. That is why Mirage had no input on the releases of the Lionsgate DVDs over the years.

nobody knows for sure what Lionsgates deal is in terms of future OT releases, as they've been "mum" about things

i think they are waiting to release them, or maybe NICK has really bought it out but it has not been announced yet and they are going to air the old toon on tv again, lol.
It would be easy for them to release the 3 missing episodes, the remainder of season 10, and season 9 on one 2-DVD set. I hope Lionsgate does it when the Nick toon comes out.

I'd happily buy Season 9 and 10 separately at 8 eps each. I don't care as long as they come out.

Why does everybody want to see those episodes so badly? I'll admit there were some cool moments, but quite frankly I never cared much for Dregg or Carter. They were just a lame attempt to boost ratings. The super mutations on the other hand was an interesting concept.

I agree Season 9 was a bit hit or miss, but Season 10 was excellent and one of the best seasons.
And why would anyone NOT want the complete collection on DVD?

Severe dislike for Dregg, maybe?

I didn't like the unstable mutations. I showed some of those episodes to a kid I introduced the Turtles through by giving him my VHS tapes of the OT and he was actually a little scared by it.
