View Full Version : Favorite Turtle Duo

Something I've always found interesting in the Turtles and their character developments in all universes is the bond that each Turtle has with each of his brothers respectively. And what's cool is that their personalities jive in different ways with one another (I guess that's nothin' new with relationships, but I think it's obvious with the Turtles) - when they converse, fight, physically fight alongside one another, etc. - all of the Turtles have different bonds with one another.

So, which Turtle Duo do you like best? Base it upon which relationship dynamic you find the most interesting. We've been given both little and big glimpses of moments for each couple in all of the various TMNT universes. Base it upon any universe you want.

I picked Donatello & Raphael. Well, naturally Donatello is in there, but to me they stand incredibly strong together with both strength and aggression (Raphael) on one side, steadiness and quick-wit on the other (Donatello). Despite this excellent group of qualities, Donatello and Raphael have drastically different personalities, as shown in all Turtle universes, most notably in the Mirage Comics (Don 1 shot) and TMNT (CGI movie). They do not always get along - Donatello being slower, better tempered, better focused and all around being the more cheerful Turtle out of the pair. Donny is also long-term orientated, and plans his steps carefully. Raphael is exactly the opposite; short-goal orientated, instant satifaction, little to no planning in his actions. Yet, I still would call them my favorite duo. I have fond memories of TMNT Adventures #52 and of course the whole Future Turtles arc with Donny and Raph gave us great insight into the way they work together when they get along.

In a fight, being based purely on weaponry, you have the longest and most effective Turtles weapon (the bo staff) and the shortest/more aggressive weapon (the sais). To me, this is such a cool pairing of weapons, especially because of the contrast of biggest weapon/smallest weapon.

Feel free to share your thoughts, I thought this might be an interesting aspect of the Turtles to discuss!

*edit: poll up.

Donatello & Mikey have always had a natural blend together. They worked off eachother's respective qualities and they shared a similar sense of humour which made them seem like they were the closest of the four. I could never imagine them have a falling out.

And they're my two favourite Turtles :P So there's that too.

Donatello & Raphael would probably make for a decent sitcom (or would that make it a "turtle-com"?). You've got the wise-cracking short-tempered cool-but-rude dude and the brainiac, tech-head, dry-humored, grease monkey. I know I'd watch.

I chose Donatello & Michelangelo due to their humors displayed in the first live action movie. They also had some funny moments in the 1987 series.

Haha...the man, the myth, the legend: Charlie Sheen.

It's interesting (and quite awesome) that the two "least popular" Turtles (at least according to our latest poll here at the Drome), in a couple, are winning this. :) Leonardo and Michelangelo, the two "most popular", have the least amount of votes as a pair.

I would like to hear some in depth opinions why people voted for a particular pair, besides the fact that they voted for their top two favorite Turtles. Each duo brings something different to the table. I always found the relationship between Mikey and Raphael interesting. There have been a few incarnations of the Turtles (2k3 comes to mind most notably, and alas, COOTS "the man is my very best friend...") where Mikey and Raph seem to share an unshakable bond. Please don't kill me for citing COOTS. The songs...are...ingrained...forever...

They are both so different that they just seem to work so well with each other.

For me, I'd say it depends on the actual medium.

For the Archie comics, I'd have to go with Donny and Raph, but mainly for the storylines involving the the future turtles. The two really balanced each other out. You have the hotheaded, aggressive Raph and the level-headed, cautious Donny.

For the OT series, I'd have to say Leo and Donny or Raph and Mikey. Don't know why, though, just seemed to work, but, if going by the last couple of seasons (Red Sky arc), I would say Leo and Mikey and Donny & Raph. Leo and Mike's faith in humanity never faltered, whereas Donny and Raph's did, so they seemed to be able to relate to each other more.

For the live-action movie (first one, anyway), definitely Donny and Mikey. They were perfect together and got along so well.

For the Mirage comics, I'd have to go with Mikey and Raph and Mikey and Donny. I only say Mikey and Raph first, because of Raph's revelation of how he'd pretty much kill anyone who'd harm Mikey and how he views him as his best friend.

I don't remember much about how they interacted in TNM and I've never seen 2K3 still. So, for this poll, I can't really vote for any pair.

This is an interesting point indeed. Donny and Raphael are definitely more cynical in nature than Leo and Mikey, at least in my opinion.

I always thought that Leonardo and Michelangelo would make a very efficient duo. Like with Donny and Raph, you get a balance of differences between the two. The same goes for Leo and Mikey, only with their respective personalities.

Donny and Raphael are definitely more cynical in nature than Leo and Mikey, at least in my opinion.Yes, I feel the same way regarding those two as far as the OT series go. Donny always sorta had it. You even see it in the pilot eps with his, "Why should we help them" attitude and you also see it sometimes in seasons after that. I was just always under the impression that Donny thought less of humans than the other three did.

As for Raph, there have been eps in the OT series where he's said the same, give or take. "Why not let the humans handle it?" The ep where Casey Jones first appears comes to mind for me. Raph had that type of attitude for that ep, until Donny and Leo pointed out that they couldn't just let it go or "let the humans handle it".I always thought that Leonardo and Michelangelo would make a very efficient duo. Like with Donny and Raph, you get a balance of differences between the two. The same goes for Leo and Mikey, only with their respective personalities.

Yeah, I think those two would too. The two are, in my opinion, very idealistic and have kind of a positive outlook on things. We all know that Mikey does, anyway. Their main difference is that Leo is extremely serious whereas Mikey takes things one day at a time and takes things as they come. He's extremely mellow and laid back and doesn't seem to let things get to him to the point of stressing him out.

Geez, why aren't there four sticky threads dedicated to each Turtle? I'd love to get into more discussion over them for all the mediums and stuff.

Leonardo and Raphael, hands down. Their rivalry is just something that drives the Turtles overall relationship and growth. Can't wait to see what Nick has in store for that aspect of the TMNT.

I think it’s subjective. The franchise always focuses on each of the four, so they don’t have to have one pair with another all the time. Personally, I don’t care if opposites attract. I don’t see Donnie and Raph pairing up all the time. Each of them have different interests, and Raph can be a little destructive for Donnie. Maybe it’s because they’re brothers. Leo and Raph can make things interesting, but it seems to end in turmoil due to different points of view. Donnie and Mikey: let’s see, I don’t know. Don’t get me wrong: sometimes I look at their friendship like it’s Lucy and Ethel. Still, they have totally different personalities. I just get bored with them being buddies a lot. I think Mikey and Raph make a better pair, because not only are they opposites, but they are both witty with their one liners. Plus they joke around with each other, even when Raph is feeling down. I don’t know. Based on who Donnie is, I see him with someone that he can relate to differently. He should stick with Leo. They may have different perceptions of things, but they won’t get destructive over it. Leo seems to be calm and easy going for Don’s personality type. Plus, even if Don’s interests don’t appeal to Leo, he’ll try his best to comment about them, nicely. They can have conversations. I think this chemistry would work. Plus, Mikey and Leo. The leader loves him, but can find his brother annoying.

I'm gonna go with Leonardo and Michelangelo. I loved the way they contrated yet complimented each other in the classic series as well as the 2k3 series. Close second, definately Michelangelo and Raphael in both series.

If the poll were still open, I would have went with Raph and Mike. Something special was lost in the comics when they stopped being buddies (around the time Casey showed up).

I agree, I'm surprised that Raph & Mike didn't get more votes - they have what seems to me the most "brotherly" bond, at least as seen in the comics and somewhat in the 2k3. Dare I mention the COOTS Tour? "The man is my very best friend, I stick with my buddy til the very end!" :P

I should have left the poll open longer. Rats.

I've probably mentioned it before in another post, but I have always loved the Leonardo-Michelangelo duo, no matter what universe. It's a shame we don't see it more.

In the OT, Leonardo was much more accepting and respectful towards Michelangelo than his brothers were. He is usually seen defending him or if not that, then he doesn't engage in the teasing and whatnot that the others do. In return, it seems that Michelangelo respects Leonardo' view/thoughts etc more than he would his other two brothers. If I had to say which of his brothers Michelangelo respects most in this universe, it would definitely be Leonardo. I think they work well together because of this mutual respect.

In the NT, we don't see this pairing much either but I think they each compliment the other well. Leo in this universe could stand to lighten up some and Mikey could stand to focus a bit more. When they're together with the others, I think they kinda get caught up in their other relationships but when it's just "these two" I think they really guide one another well. It doesn't seem forced.

This is a good point, and I've often thought the same about Leo & Mike. Not to mention, they are arguably the most skilled ninjas out of the four in their own rights.

I think an important factor is Mike's mutability makes him extremely well paired with each of his brothers. He really brings out the lightheartedness in each Turtle and in their respective personalities, in my opinion.
