View Full Version : Does dated CG animation turn you off from watching shows?

For me, I cannot watch anything done is CG unless millions are spent on it and it looks like Pixar's or Dreamworks movies like Toy Story, Shrek, etc.

Whenever I watch a CG show on TV, I just can't stand watching it for more than 10 minutes, it just bothers me. I know they don't have the budget a movie does, but it makes it really difficult to watch.

If the Nick show doesn't show an increase in production values or the Turtles models don't improve, I think this show is going to be very difficult to watch. It'll feel like watching some old PS2 FMV cinema scene stretched into 30 minutes.

Anyone concerned? No matter how good the plots are, if the CG animation isn't good I can't get into it.

As long as it's not a horrendous ****ing catastrophe: No.

Though I never watch any shows that are just CGI. But if we take early Buffy the Vampire Slayer-episodes as an example: I don't mind the bad computer animation. As long as the story and characters are worth my time, the CG is allowed to be kinda bad.

Simple answer no.

For me it's the same with any other media. I love watching old movies, playing older games and older animation shows. it's not just the CG that counts, it's animation; how fluid is it, do the characters have weight and so on. The style; is it interesting or generic. Who designed it and do i suit the show and the characters. And there's music, effects, story and more.

I think that the majority of people do not understand that 3D/CG animation is still in a infantile state, pretty much as "good old" 2D animation was back in it's initial start. The good CG movies we see today are the equivalent of what Snow White is to 2D animation. granted 3D animation have come a long way from Enter The Shizzagee, ReBoot, Transformers: Beast Wars, Donkey Kong Country the TV Series. 3D/CG Animators have to "rediscover" the principles of animation with the new tools that are out there, styles will be tested and have been tested, just like what 2D animation have done. Cartoony, Semi-realistic, Photo realistic. Different renders that can make the already finished 3D models look like entirely new characters.

Example how a different render engine can change the entire look and feel of a modeled character can be seen on my own youtube page with videos of my TMNT model. [/end shameless ad]

Of course watching high budget animated films will be more visually appealing, but there's more then just the visuals that counts. Just look at Avatar.

What we have seen is a bare basic teaser. It's not even a teaser trailer, like the running scene teaser TMNT07 had. We have seen the individual CG models posing in a blank environment. Give them some textures and it will look like it's a whole different thing.
But if you just don't like the style they are going for or just don't 3D/CG animation because it's "different", too bad. It's not made for you.

It doesn't turn me off, at all. My favorite shows, like Beast Wars and ReBoot don't look amazing by today's standards, but they're still amazing cartoons that I enjoy rewatching.

If the Turtles cartoon looks interesting (it does, thus far), and is written well, I don't see why it couldn't fall into the same bracket as the two shows I mentioned.

"I cannot watch anything done is CG unless millions are spent on it and it looks like Pixar's or Dreamworks movies"

That's a ridiculous statement, and it makes you come off like a snobby little ****. It also makes it apparent that you don't really have any concept of visual aesthetics.

"Graphic h*e" is a well used name in my area when this issue comes with video games. One dude in my game class only bought games with top notch graphics, any thing else was garbage in his eyes.

yeah it does but i dont think the new ninja turtles series is going to have bad animation.
to be honest the only show that nick has bad animation for is the penguins. but hopefully the only reason it is so bad is because its a movie adaption pretty much. fanboy and chum chums animation looks pretty decent ill admit but that shows made to look cartoony.
im not really concerned about the animation. as long as it looks good. and they still have a little less than two years to realese the new show so the turtles may be made less blocky.

but i agree no matter how good the plot is if the animation is trash its hard to watch. lol

Bad animation of ANY variety will turn me off of a show; be it CGI, Flash or traditional cel animation.

If the CG animation in the Nick series is up to snuff, then I'll enjoy the show. If its eye-gougingly amateurish, then I probably won't be watching.

We'll just have to wait and see.

If the show is well-written and the models are well-utilized, it will more than make up for weak model and environment construction. Case in point: Beast Wars: Transformers.

Orin even more recent memory: Transformers Prime. Completely deserted cities and landscapes and nearly no incidental or crowd filler humans whatsoever, or even a wardrobe change for the primary ones...

But it can all be overlooked by the superb character animation, which is very well done.

I'm not really a fan if CGI but that will never hold me back from watching/enjoying a turtle show or film.

I prefer 2D animation over CG animation hands-down. However, I like a lot of CG movies and tend to stop thinking about how they're CG shortly into them. Also, as long as it's a good show, I can usually get past it. A good example would be Fanboy & Chum Chum. It's CG, but I like the show!

I really like the animation done in Marvel vs Capcom 3. Yeah i know its a video game but even if it were done like that I watch. The cell shading done on that were amazing! Also the trailer movies look good too! It fits the style of TMNT if it were dark and griddy.

Honestly it kind of depends. Some of that early CG where mouths didn't move properly with dialogue and everyone looked kind of clunky... I can't watch. Of course I couldn't watch it when it was NEW either.

If it's decent looking CG to begin with, it'll always look fine. Even if it gets dated. We're rapidly approaching a limit on what CG can look like anyway, to be honest.

I like the combination of a 2D style mixed with 3D CGI. It doesn't have to have the skin and texture renderings or the fluidity in movement that the big screen CGI blockbusters have to be watchable. I like stuff that is stylized rather than a mimic of realism sometimes. I still like animation of all sorts, so if the nostalgia of stylized 2D animation can be combined with the technology behind 3D animation, I think that can be a beautiful thing...... then again what do I know?

no more than dated animation would. if the story still works or the humor is still intact i'll watch it regardless

Honestly, OP, I'd rather watch regular 2D animated renditions than 3D CGI but I won't say that the latter puts me off watching the show. I prefer the style of the first still image of the turtles Nick released earlier this month but I don't mind the CG, which will definitely be improved in the near future.

Does dated CG animation turn you off from watching shows?

Depends. If the CG was meant to look realistic, then it does turn me off; but if the CG was meant to be stylized, then it doesn't turn me off at all.

Perfect examples:

Beast Wars - It may or may not have tried to look realistic, but it certainly looks dated, and if it didn't hold nostalgia for me, I would struggle to watch it.

Beast Machines - Highly stylized, and it still looks amazing to this day.

It looks like Nick is going the stylized route, so I'm happy.

And heck, even hand drawn 2D animation can look dated. Look at episodes in the first few seasons of the Simpsons, Family Guy, and Futurama compaired to more recent ones? The animation has gotten better. But some of those episodes I still love, because the story is good and the jokes are strong.
