View Full Version : The Donatello Thread
Donnie

So here we have it! The Donatello Thread, now open as an outlet for fans to discuss the brains of the TMNT in all of his glorious incarnations. Donnie is without a doubt my favorite Turtle - the Turtle that would rather mix words before shelling out a more "holistic" (to quote Tom Waltz) approach.
http://i46.tinypic.com/2zgx5qs.jpg
Donnie has not undergone monumental changes (personality wise) in any TMNT universe (unlike Raphael, whose different mediums are sometimes contrasting.) He is always the tech genius/the wiz kid, providing the Turtles with ground breaking (and in the case of the OT, limitless) technology that increases their victory ratio. He uses his intellect in the clutch, and without Donnie the Turtles would have been severly handicapped in a lot of scenarios. He provides scientific data on a daily basis (in all realms of the study including earth, biology, physics) to help the Turtles understand and successfully emerge from their current situation/environment. Plus, he quotes Darwin on a regular basis in "Tales". What's not to like here? He's a handy Turtle, being the creator of all their forms of transportation, which are anything but legal in most scenarios. From these creative endeavors alone we know that Donnie is a natural mechanic to the highest degree.
Concerning his fighting skills, I may venture to say that Donatello is the least involved with his martial arts training. Donnie would rather be in the lab or reading a book. His head is in the clouds involved in his own world a lot of the time. He prefers the aforementioned to fighting, and in most incarnations Donnie only uses violence as a last resort. As has been discussed before here on the 'drome, out of the four, Don is the most pacifist-friendly. Nonetheless he is a very capable fighter, weilding the most resourceful weapon. Donnie is the one who gives the final blow to Shredder in volume 1 #1.
A big part of Donatello's character that I think few notice is his spiritual side. He is far from religious in the traditional sense, yet there are plenty of instances in various TMNT universes in which showcase Donnie having some sort of spiritual dilemma (Secret of the Ooze, for example.) He's always thinking about the purpose of the Turtles and why they were alive to begin with - if they were special, or just some random scientific mishap. My favorite portrayals of Donnie usually always focus on this side of Donatello - the sensitive, somewhat spiritual side.
Alright, alright. So which incarnation of Donnie do I like the best? I would have to say Mirage, although each medium comes close to rivaling it except for Image. Sometimes I think that movie 1's Donatello is my favorite adaption, for reasons I'll explain later. We see all of the facets of Don's personality that I mentioned above in the original Mirage books. Yet, the other incarnations do great justice to him as well: the second live-action film is very much Donatello centered, focusing on his sensitivity and his inability to accept that he and his brothers were just a mistake and not something "special". The OT shows Donnie perhaps at his most brainiest, as mentioned inventing limitless gadgets and methods of scientific inquiry. The OT was what made Donnie my favorite from the start. Next Mutation Don was fine by me.
In newer mediums I think Donatello was done much justice. The 2k3 is also one of my favorite adaptions of Donnie, capturing his tech-savvy side with his sensitive side in an awesome mold of...well, Donnie. I love the 2007 TMNT film's portrayal, too. I think it's an extremely notable adaption concerning Donatello - he is committed, mature, and has the technological world at his finger tips. In this movie Donatello also struggles internally as he is seen as the de-facto leader of the group in Leonardo's absence. I love the argument we see between him and Raphael in the beginning, and Donnie's relationship with Mikey is admirable as well (that goes for the first movie, too.)
http://i48.tinypic.com/15q9i02.jpg
What's somewhat odd is the first film's lack of ultra tech-savvy Don. He's seen tinkering with a gadget in the sewers, and he helps Casey fix April's beat up truck - these instances are shout outs to his ability in my opinion rather than displays of his actual skill. The first film still does a very good job portraying Donatello's personality sans the tech-wiz bit. Honestly, I like how he's not portrayed as the "know-it-all" tech guy. By not pegging him with the constant "Mr. Fix-it" stereotype, we were able to see another side of Donatello's character.
I know it's wildly popular here but concerning Donnie, the Image series is to me like a suppressed bad memory. Sure, let's celebrate the brains of the TMNT by having him get blown away on page 1 of issue 1. Cool. Some like the idea of a Cyborg Donatello (and I wouldn't have minded it as much as I do if not for that terrible bulky design they gave him) but Image's Don did not sit well with me. I don't think they wrote him that well, either. He seemed a bit rash and out of his usual element in Image. I really would have liked to see what Image had in store for Donatello's "spiritual crisis" that they teased about in the last few issues. Maybe that arc would have changed my mind about Image's story.
IDW's Donatello is, thus far, an interesting take on the character and one that deviates slightly from the typical Donnie ilk in the fact that he has so far been advocating a more aggressive approach towards group decisions. He was largely against what seemed to him a needless search for Raphael, he wanted to kill Old Hob, and he also has argued with Leonardo on almost any occasion he could. He has proven thus far to almost abnormally smart as in the OT, and his passion for machines has not been explained outside of his Micro issue, which did a decent job at showing the light-hearted side of Donatello. I loved how Donnie acted in the first 3-4 issues, yet I became a little disillusioned with IDW as Donnie became more aggressive towards Leo with every issue. It just seemed unnecessary. I will say, however, that exploring this more aggressive Donatello's character is most definitely very interesting and opens the door for a lot of good character development, and maybe even a bond with Raphael that was missing in past incarnations.
As for Nick's 2012 Donatello...we will see! By looks alone, Donatello is excellently portrayed. While I don't see the need in making him taller than the rest, I like the gap in the tooth and I also like how Donnie has the belt over his shoulder, like in movie 1. I also like how he has brown eyes, as opposed to the others, who have green eyes and blue eyes.

A big part of Donatello's character that I think few notice is his spiritual side.
Most especially because you're imagining it to an extent.
I love OT Don, he practically always saves the day. Lavender is a cool color too. Mirage Don is neat, a level-headed kinda quiet turtle with a bit of a dark side, I like that. I freakin' LOVE the Image Don. He's just insane. I dig the fact that he was made into a cyborg quite a bit, and how insane he goes about it at first is "epic". I think Don in the movies is classic, though not always too true to character. Nonetheless he's got a great incarnation there, and I do appreciate him a good deal. Next Mutation, I dunno why, but I really like him there. Even though they went overboard with the geek thing & I liked his bandana style the least, he just worked for me. 2k3 I think had good potential, but I feel like he was the turtle who got the least attention in that series. The only time they really gave him on screen was when he whipped out some unrealistically over the top machine, usually vehicles. I know that was his steez in the OT, but they invented that, it shoulda stayed there. TMNT I feel was kinda the same case, too tech & not enough attention. I'm sure we all agree on that. He's pretty much the best character on earth in every TMNT game, his long range weapon kicks ass, most especially in Tournament Fighters (SNES) where spamming his high attack can bring you all the way to the end with ease. & as for Archie, I don't recall much but his future tense self was pretty rad too. All in all, I like Don a lot. He's numero doce in my favorite list, second only to Leonardo.

Donatello has become my second favorite Turtle, surprisingly because of the 2k3 Donnie. I love how much of a geek he is, though I agree the vehicles are a bit over the top. Re watching the OT makes I'm growing to like that Donnie too. Image Don...well...at first I wasn't a huge fan, but seeing him work out this "problem" and become his own person and not a host for the cyborg was pretty cool.

In all honesty, Donatello is my least favourite turtle in most TMNT universes (except the '87 show, where Raph takes the cake hands down). But I must admit that after reading the OP, I'm starting to see Donny in a different light. I just never felt compelled by his character/personality. I also saw him as the least talented fighter (whether true or not, he gave me those vibes).
Nonetheless, my favourite Donatello is by far the Mirage comics version. The original. He was bad@ss. He didn't look nerdy, just plain capable and bad@ss.
Excellent thread, btw. :tgrin:
I love all the Donatello's Mirage, Archie all of em Don was my fav from the start.

I love OT Donatello; he's got that sort of dry humor at times, similar to Raphael, while Leonardo and Michelangelo are the less cynical ones. It makes them seem more like brothers, when you can note how they're similar or different from each other.
I know a lot of people say Donatello seems out of character in the first movie, goofing with Michaelangelo and not really doing the scientific stuff. But I can kind of see where they were going with that characterization. I think they were trying to make him seem like the more thoughtful yet awkward one in the group. For instance he insists on taking his time before coming up with the appropriate victory cheer, and even when he does finally pick one, it's kind of bizarre, lol. Plus the actor in the suit was constantly holding or tapping his chin, again giving the impression that Donatello's always thinking.
I guess the difference is, OT Donatello would have told Casey Jones he's a claustrophobic and then diligently spent half the episode working on a cure (which of course will work because OT Don's is a freakin genuis), but then of course get no credit for it. Whereas the first movie Donatello makes the same astute observation, but uses it purely to taunt Casey, and ends up with the upper hand, lol.
Personally I think first movie Donatello is what OT Donatello occasionally wishes he could be. Corey Feldman as a brainy turtle, lol. (OT Don is an '80s kid after all! ;) )

But I must admit that after reading the OP, I'm starting to see Donny in a different light.
Thanks, Icegaze! Glad you're seeing the light! :D
Adding to my initial post, I read in the Leonardo thread some stories that mirror my own - purple is my favorite color to this day, and there's no doubt in my mind it became my favorite color because I picked Donatello as my favorite Turtle as a kid. It was cool to read that some other members had a similar tale, only with their respective favorite.
I've been idolizing/looking up to/trying to be like Donny since I was a kid. I'm still influenced by his character. Actually, I think my love for earth science was triggered by my love for the character. I don't think it's silly at all to idolize a fictional character. They are ideals to live up to in a suspicious and immoral world. Our connection to them mentally makes them more alive to me than many things that are supposed to be "real."
Most especially because you're imagining it to an extent.
Although I will admit that I exaggerate this aspect of Donatello because I like it so much, I am definitely not imagining it. Of course, Donny is naturally more scientific and the most skeptical of the bunch. However, there are plenty of instances that show Donny to be of the spiritual variety, too - some examples to prove my point would be in the Secret of the Ooze, like I mentioned in the first post - Donny's feeling inadequate and wanting to be "special" is by all means a spiritual dilemma. In the Mirage comics, v.1 #37 speaks for itself, and v.2 #1 does the trick. Even Image was going to give Donny a spiritual arc.
Donatello's immense love for animals is another aspect of his personality worth talking about, and I meant to mention it in my first post. It ties into his spirituality. He has admitted that he loves all animals, regardless if they are trying to kill him or not (see Tales #29). On page 1 of Tales #18, you can clearly see Donny's love for his "kin" - a baby slider. He is talking to it, establishing a connection to it, and calling it "sweetie." These displays of animal affection channel through the spiritual side of things rather than the scientific, at least in my eyes. So although I may sometimes exaggerate his spiritual side, I'm not just making it up, either.

Good point, I would agree with this assessment.

Thanks, I'm glad that made sense, lol.
I wasn't as crazy about second movie Donatello; he was a little too perfect. If you're going to have a brainy character, they need to have some personality otherwise they can start to get boring.
OT Donatello doesn't have this problem because sometimes he's a little goody goody, but other times he can get very annoyed with people, either for not appreciating him or for just being an idiot, lol. He's got that kind of neurotic New Yorker vibe, which gives him a lot of personality and charm.

I must disagree here. As I stated earlier, I think Secret of the Ooze actually shows a lot of personality for Donny, especially in his struggle to accept what he and his brothers are. But to each his own! :)

I actually was going to write "to each their own" but I forgot, lol. So thanks for putting it in there. ;)
Moving on, I like the idea of Donatello being more of a pacifist, or at least a hesitant fighter. If only because so many scientists in history have sadly had to use their abilities to contribute to war and destruction.
Of course I have to mention the "Night of the Dark Turtle" episode, where at the beginning Donatello attempts to defend brains over brawn, but faced with taunts from the others, he quickly switches to proving his "manhood:" "Hey, I could take on Shredder myself if I had to!"
It's a very teenager thing to do; it's hard to be accepted by your group while still keeping true to your unpopular opinions, lol.

Agreed. I really like how Donatello is the group pacifist - at least, he has a ton of pacifist tendencies, more so than the others. Many times in both the comics and in the 2k3 Donatello sat out during a fight in favor of scientific research or using his brains to solve the current dilemma. A very admirable (and essential) quality!
Good point about caving under pressure while trying to stay true to your beliefs. I think this is a common problem for many people especially during their teenage years, myself included!

Thanks to Jester for getting the ball rolling with "The Raphael Thread" and ssjup81 for the idea in the "Favorite Turtle Duo" discussion.Glad to have contributed. ^_^ Adding on, Donny is the one I wanted to talk about the most. ^^
That aside, since coming back to the fandom, I've grown really interested in Donny's character a lot. I never realized how interesting a character he was.
For the OT series, just like with Leo, as a kid, both were "just there", as I favored Raph and Mikey. Since going back to the OT series, I'm realizing just how great a character Donny actually was. I like the fact that he's brainy, but impulsive (imo) as well. I like the fact that he has flaws and isn't a perfect character, but this is what I've noticed since coming back, mind you.
I've noticed that Donny has an ego, lots of pride, a real dark side, and, imo, if you push him too hard, he'll snap on you. I also noticed the "spiritual" thing, but I'll get back into that later since I've noticed that for the comic mediums more so than say the OT (I've never seen 2k3 and I don't remember enough about TNM to comment on it).
Anywho, I like those sides of Donny. Night of the Dark Turtle shall be one of my all-time favorite Donnyesque eps because it exhibited that he does have a dark side and that he can snap if you push him to far (imo). I know the shock had a lot to do with that, but for that side to come out it had to have originally been there in the first place.
I felt the ego thing was exhibited in Donatello's Duplicate. Yeah, it was his clone, but he is a clone of Donny, which means that side has to be there. There are also other eps where he seems to think a bit highly of himself. Hm, guess that episode where Raph and Mikey were dragged to Dimension X along with Irma, April, and Vernon and ran into the Neutrinos. After Donny managed to get them home, Kala said something about being cute and thanks for helping or whatever. Mikey, obviously, figured she was talking to him, since they were the ones talking originally anyway. Raph thought she was talking about him so Raph and Mikey started arguing. Donny then butt in and was going on about how he's the handsome one or something. I just found that funny because the convo had nothing to do with him, and if the compliment would've been directed at anyone, it would've been Raph or Mikey since they were the ones who spent the entire ep with the Neutrinos. So yeah...to me, he thinks highly of himself.
Now, as for the pride issue...Donatello's Badd Time showed that very well. Instead of admitting he needed help or that he lost the van, he tried to do everything on his own. So, this could also show that he's independent to that of an actual fault. I'd go as far to say that Donatello Makes Time showed this a bit too. He ran off by himself.
Now, for the spiritual thing. In the OT series, I can't really say that that side of him was shown. In Mirage and Archie it seemed to show. For Mirage, I agree with what you were saying about that. In Archie, I noticed that it seemed that Donny's character was purposely set up to always encounter the supernatural. I loved the arc where Donny had the power to literally destroy the universe and how he could hear those beings and all that, or even the spirit his character encountered during the Japan arc (which also introduced Ninjara's character). I felt that arc was nice in exhibiting the whole spiritual thing for Donny.
Hm, let's see, I don't know which Donny would be my favorite, but seems I like him for all the mediums I've been exposed to. Seriously, OT series has made me like him so much since going back to the series, it's made me check out Archie and Mirage comics. I should check out Image someday. I have this feeling that I'd really like him there.
So...yeah. I would go on, but I think this post has gotten long enough already and still need to clean this apartment out since I have to move out of it tomorrow. lolI actually was going to write "to each their own" but I forgot, lol. So thanks for putting it in there. ;)

In that annoying ep Name that Toon (I think it was), I swear Donny would've stabbed Shredder through the head with his bo if Shredder wouldn't have kicked him back! That battle was short, but heated. I guess this also shows that Donny has an aggressive side too, but for this particular fight, I'm curious why he seemed so aggressive in the first place.
I made clips for my cousin, so I'll share them here too.

Great post, ssjup81! I agree with you that Donny's dark side is a fascinating part of his personality, and I identify with it greatly. He is (along with Raphael) more on the cynical side of things, and there have been numerous times it was said that Donatello trusted humans the least out of his brothers. Whereas Raphael wears his dark side on his shoulders, I think it's cooler with Donny because he keeps his dark side deep within himself - and when it comes out, it comes out swinging!
Whereas you're well versed in the OT (and I used to be when I was younger) I am well versed with the 2k3, and I can tell you most definitely that if you like Donny in the OT, you'll love him in the 2k3, at least in my opinion. Concerning the Mirage and 2k3 world, I think the way that Donatello would defeat the Shredder single handedly would ultimately be with his intellect, devising or seeing a loop-hole in Shredder's anger or pride and striking when the iron is hot, like Splinter did a lot in the 2k3. Whereas Leonardo might have the strength to defeat him by force, Donatello has strengths elsewhere.
Concerning OT Don though, yeah, he could take that Shredder, no sweat!

Well certainly some of OT Don's technical logic doesn't quite hold up ("Simple, we reversed the reverse gravity!"), lol. And perhaps the plot device of the Turtles always turning to Donatello in the end to fix things was a bit over used (they even make fun of this in one episode!). But that's part of the nature of the series. And at the same time, OT Donatello has his share of failures too, which led to great episodes like "Donatello Trashes Slash" where we see him lamenting how much he messes up, until he takes Splinter's advice and turns a failure into a victory. ;)

That's a good question. I think Herald did a nice job explaining how OT Don was certainly out of the realm of reality in many of his technological advances, but hey, that's the beauty of it. :)
I personally love Donny's tech prowess. I mean, yeah, it's probably over done in every adaption (except for possibly Mirage), but it's great. 2k3 Don was way more realistic-thinking than was his OT counterpart. In "Turtles Forever" one of my favorite moments is when OT Don is trying to convince 2k3 Don that his transdimensional portal-stick (aka a flash-light!) was going to work, and 2k3 Don was simply dumbfounded at the thought of it. Of course, it wound up working, but that's a moot point!

I've been saying it in the past threads, and I'll say it again:

As for the cartoons, my favorite due to his humor there as well.

Yeah it was nice to see the original Donatello in the 3rd film, even if the film itself was disapointing, lol.
I've noticed that Donny has an ego, lots of pride
Something that always bugged me actually, OT Donatello always seem to be walking in and saying "Hey guys, check out my latest invention!" And of course, it messes up. But the weird thing is it always feels like this is the first time he's actually testing it. Like he didn't make sure it actually worked before unleashing it on the other turtles. He just has an idea, builds the machine and is completely confident it's going to work...until it doesn't, lol.
Definitely a bit of an ego trip there I think, hehe. Of course it's hard to blame him since most of the time he is brilliant, lol. And he's only like, what, 16 years old? Eventually he'll learn, even geniuses need to test their inventions beforehand! ; )

No matter which version of Don, it's his technical prowess that is the most fond of. The running gag in the OT of his inventions backfiring was pretty funny but I never found his bo always breaking funny at all.

I would like to add to our discussion that Sideshow recognized Donny's pacifist/spiritual side, too. They even touched upon his leadership! This is from the back of Don's Comiquette box:
Donatello's pacifist ideals clash with his life as a Ninja warrior, and he often retreats from the group to contemplate this internal conflict. Level headed and calm tempered, Donatello is both a quiet leader and loyal steward of the Ninja Turtles.
Retreating from the group to contemplate internal conflicts is certainly a spiritual action. Darn accurate description of the Donny I know, for sure!

Great post, ssjup81! I agree with you that Donny's dark side is a fascinating part of his personality, and I identify with it greatly. He is (along with Raphael) more on the cynical side of things, and there have been numerous times it was said that Donatello trusted humans the least out of his brothers. Whereas Raphael wears his dark side on his shoulders, I think it's cooler with Donny because he keeps his dark side deep within himself - and when it comes out, it comes out swinging!I know, right! That dark side is what I like about Donny most, as well as his cynicism. He does seem to be the most apathetic towards humans, which was even shown in the pilot eps. He seemed to have a, "It's their problem, why should we bother with it" attitude. In that ep where the Turtles meet that rich, snobby girl (who Mikey crushed on until he saw how bratty she was), Leo pointed out to Mikey that they were from two different worlds (for the most part...rich and poor). Donny jumped in to point out that she wasn't even a Turtle. In that other ep, Rebel without a Fin, April got turned into this humanoid fish type thing, and April was upset over how she looked. Donny went on about how she'd look better with a shell or something along the lines of that. I really get the impression from the OT series that he just didn't care one way or the other where humans were concerned, unless it directly involved him in some way. I could be looking too much into it, though.Whereas you're well versed in the OT (and I used to be when I was younger) I am well versed with the 2k3, and I can tell you most definitely that if you like Donny in the OT, you'll love him in the 2k3, at least in my opinion. OT Donny was my favorite Donny from the start and I've liked him ever since, but I think I favor 2k3 Donny more. I'm glad you see the spiritual side of Donny, too! Well, the only reason I'm "well-versed" in the OT series is because I recently went back to it. As far as actual characterizations, the only thing I remembered about Donny was that he was the brainy technological genius of the four. It's like with Leo. "Leonardo leads...Donatellos does machines". That's all I actually remembered about their characters. Leo did lead and Donny was the machine guy. With Raph, I remembered what I really liked about him, his openly sarcastic humor. With Mikey, he was the fun one. Going back, I didn't even realize how little development Raph got and he was my favorite as a kid. The other three definitely had more development (OT series) than he did, imo.Concerning the Mirage and 2k3 world, I think the way that Donatello would defeat the Shredder single handedly would ultimately be with his intellect, devising or seeing a loop-hole in Shredder's anger or pride and striking when the iron is hot, like Splinter did a lot in the 2k3. Whereas Leonardo might have the strength to defeat him by force, Donatello has strengths elsewhere. The intellect thing suits Donny in a general sense. I still do believe, though, that if pushed, intellect be darned! lol But I'm sure that'd go for either of them.Concerning OT Don though, yeah, he could take that Shredder, no sweat!I think so too. Still find it odd how Shredder was never portrayed as being an actual ninja. I mean, he rarely ever seemed to fight them himself, which was always a bummer, but the fight I linked I just found interesting. He was really aggressive there, more than usual, imo.
As for the Dark Turtle ep, well...that entire ep was a bit off to me. Shredder was completely off. Donny was cool, but Shredder didn't even put up much of a fight. We have that earlier ep where both he and Donny were going against each other in a heated battle. Donny probably would've delivered a deathblow if Shredder hadn't have kicked him. Dark Turtle, Shredder runs. That ep did Shredder an injustice, even by OT standards. He couldn't take out four out of shape security guards and had to get help from gangsters to get past them, and he's supposed to be a ninja?!

pac·i·fist–noun
1. a person who believes in pacifism or is opposed to war or to violence of any kind.
2. a person whose personal belief in pacifism causes him or her to refuse being drafted into military service. Compare conscientious objector.

All due respect my friend we might have to agree to disagree on this. I don't think he's a clear cut pacifist by definition (why do you guys keep defining the word? That would mean that you think I said he was a clear cut by the book pacifist) but I can't see how you can negate this side of him completely. I've given tons of examples from the comics and the 2k3 show that will prove to the "Donny's nothing like a pacifist" camp that he indeed has major pacifist tendencies, and he's a lot like a pacifist in his thought process, if not for his actions (even though we get two sides of Donny: the peace-maker and the fighter.) I'm not arguing that he is 100% to the book pacifist.
I'll say it again though, I agree with you that he's not a clear cut pacifist. We can also agree on non-confrontational. :D
I just can't agree with saying he's nothing like a pacifist...there's a ton of references like those I've cited that quote clear as day Donny as being an unlikely mix of Ninja/pacifist. Donny's character is enveloped in a lot of dualities (fighter/peace-maker, light/dark side, honest/brooding, etc.) which is another reason why I love him!

He does seem to be the most apathetic towards humans, which was even shown in the pilot eps. He seemed to have a, "It's their problem, why should we bother with it" attitude.
Yeah there's that vibe in the very early episodes, but that makes sense. All the turtles know about humans is that they're responsible for keeping them at the bottom of a glass bowl half their lives. I wouldn't like humans very much either, lol. But as the show went on Donatello was much closer to April. He does let her kiss him after all, lol.

Donny has been confrontational before when maybe voicing his opinions and stuff. I know in the Mirage comics he's quick to get on Raph's case when he's being foolish or illogical. Yeah, I'd agree with this actually...in retrospect it's the same thing as his pacifist tendencies: he's the *most* non-confrontational of the four, but he does put himself in situations that merit themselves to confrontation. Totally.
I love those screen shots! It's hilarious how happy Donny is and how Raphael is just staring in all the stills, with the same spacey glare. I think what we could all agree on would be that Donatello in most incarnations has a vague (or sometimes, apparent) distrust of humans, but there is an exception: April. I know it's weird and all, but I thought if April was to be with any of the Turtles, Donny was her best match. Yeah yeah, weird I know. But we all know we've thought about it.

What can I say about Donatello? He is the brains of the group: a scientific genius who creates these interesting inventions, and kicks serious butt against the bad guys. Yes, he is very cool. Still there’s a turn off: his mask color. I’m sorry, but purple is not my favorite color. Also, his weapon is a bo staff. He’s very good with it, but that can’t kill a murderer like the Shredder (unless it’s thrown at a hand grenade). Donnie is great, I must say, but I’m gonna have to go with Leo. Donnie may be the “smart one,” but that does not go to say that the rest of his brothers are stupid. Leonardo’s a smart guy, too; not in most sciences or technology, but as a strategist and philosopher. This guy’s a history buff for crying out loud. I would rather hear a lecture on a Samurai battle than one about quantum physics. Also his mask is blue. This color has been my favorite color for years. Plus, Leo has swords. He is so cool when he wields them. Swords are probably the best weapon to use if there are no firearms available. A bo staff, not so much. Overall, I do like Donatello a lot, but Leonardo is still #1 in my book.

Well, purple was my favorite color (and still is), and as a kid, Raphael was my favorite character (for the OT series) because of his being a "smart ass". I never thought much about weapons when it came to "favorite" characters. It was all about personality for me.

Thanks for pointing that out. Plus, Raph is pretty cool.

Well, I'd say he is aware of his intelligence but he rarely treats his brothers differently because of it; it's not like they aren't intelligent in their own rights. Although I do think he thinks of himself a little more highly, whether he thinks it to himself, or says sarcastic side comments when one of his brothers does something he doesn't really approve of or believe is logical/rational.
On a side note, here's some further proof that Donatello has notable pacifist tendencies, besides what has been already pointed out by myself and others who agree with me on this matter. Here it is from the mouth of Kevin Eastman, with a nod of approval from Laird:

I just finished reading TMNT/Flaming Carrot #1 and I noticed something interesting about the idea that Donatello is the most pacifist of the Turtles.
After killing a green flameman, the doctor with the Turtles is unhappy that they killed it. Raphael and Leonardo retort and say that it attacked Leonardo and they shouldn't take it back to study it (because it would kill them like in Alien).
But Dontello says "It was stupid... like a little baby! Just walked right up. We might at least have tried to communicate..."

But Dontello says "It was stupid... like a little baby! Just walked right up. We might at least have tried to communicate..."
Another valid point confirming the opinion that Donny is the Turtle with the most pacifist tendencies. There's many instances that span the TMNT universe, and it's also the opinion that Eastman & Laird hold, at least from what we can tell from that early interview. There's no doubt in my mind that he (Donatello) is the least violent of all the TMNT, and he prefers to talk things out as opposed to fighting.
Jo Dawn
05-25-2011, 07:48 PM
Of course, Donnie is the most pacifistic of the four. That's a non-debatable point that is the essence of the character. Its not an 'opinion', it's a fact. It is, from the beginning, how Laird and Eastman designed and wrote the character, to have the most pacifistic tendencies, yet able in to kill in a pinch if need be. It makes for an interesting dynamic in his personality.
And, to backtrack...
A big part of Donatello's character that I think few notice is his spiritual side. He is far from religious in the traditional sense, yet there are plenty of instances in various TMNT universes in which Donny seems to be having some sort of spiritual dilemma (Secret of the Ooze, for example.) He's always thinking about the purpose of the Turtles and why they were alive to begin with - if they were special, or just some random scientific mishap. My favorite portrayals of Donny usually always focus on this side of Donatello - the sensitive, spiritual side.
Donnie doesn't really have a spiritual side. He is a scientific mind, using science to find his answers. That is, he does not practice any religion, but he will also defend Splinter and (mainly) Leonardo's beliefs. He trusts facts that you can touch and feel and answer on paper more than an invisible faith.
As a religious person myself, I never really saw Don's issue in SotO as a spiritual thing; I more saw it as a scientist unable to find a solid reason for their being. Of course, everyone wants to be... wanted, made for a certain purpose. I thought his issue was looking for evidence that their creation was not a scientific mishap, but a plan in evolution.
I thought his mostly scientific mind was most obvious in Mirage Volume Four, during Splinter's funeral, when Don goes back to get a 'piece' of Splinter, to study his DNA.
What's somewhat odd is the first film's lack of ultra tech-savvy Don. He's seen tinkering with a gadget in the sewers, and he helps Casey fix April's beat up truck - these instances are shout outs to his ability in my opinion rather than displays of his actual skill. Despite this minor flaw with the first film, it still does a very good job portraying Donatello's personality sans the tech-wiz bit.
The first movie was a horrible portrayal of Don's personality. That movie's characterization not really thought out or correct, for the most part. Sorry, but Don is not a 'nyuck-nyuck' Mikey-lite (no offense to Michaelangelo fans). Ok, the bit where he was so nerdy he couldn't think of a 'hip' word to use, was cute, but not accurate. Really, Don most likely couldn't care less if he appeared to be cool or with it. The part with Casey's truck (sans the friendship with Casey) was the only time we really saw something that his character could do, tech-wise.
Of all the incarnations, Don's relationship with April was the least accurate in the OT. Their friendship (and the well written crush in 2K3, not too obvious and in-your-face, yet just obvious enough) are a result of what they have in common, which is that they are both scientists. Which wasn't written in the OT, as April was a reporter and got captured more than Princess Peach.

I love him portrayed in that sense!:tlol: Oh, and the reason they probably made more Donny "Mikeyish" like you were saying earlier, was probably to portray how well Donny and Mikey get along, just like in the Mirage comics. Mikey and Donny can relate well to one another when Leo and Raph are at odds with one another. Mikey is also close to Raph, but not so much with Leo. Donny seems he can get along best with Leo and not with Raph, so it's interesting how the movie set that all up.
Anywho, the main part where Donny seemed "Donnyish" to me for movie 1, was when he was trying to tell the other foot soldiers that they shouldn't jump down because of the foundation being weak.Of all the incarnations, Don's relationship with April was the least accurate in the OT. Only difference between April and Peach, is that April can attempt to take care of herself, or was more so in the wrong place at the wrong time or got in over her head just trying to do her job. IMO, can't really compare Peach to April for OT series in that sense since Peach was primarily written to be a damsel in distress. What facts would you say should be included Jo Dawn??

I'm on a jpop music board. It's gone down, though, but I created a thread on the artist, Akino Arai. My first post is loaded with facts about her which includes album/single info and stuff like that. The rest of the thread was just discussion about the artist, her works, collaborations, why some like certain songs by her, why some don't like certain songs by her, etc. I feel that that can be done for these character threads as well.
Edit: I guess it's okay to link it here, but this what I meant. Like I said, the old message board went down, so they're starting over here, which sucks since I'd been there for the past eight years, and my thread was there for four, but there's not much activity going on in some of the threads on this new board.

Plus they're the most level-headed and rational out of all. They're also the most hardworking and dedicated at what they do. But I think they might have too much in common that the dynamic of their relationship isn't as interesting as say Leo and Ralph or Mikey and Donnie, where both relationships have opposite (and conflicting) personalities.

I think Mikey's just one of those guys that gets along with anyone. He's Raph's best friend because they're so different. His childlike joy balances Raph's dark depression As for Donnie and Mikey I love how they are in the 1st movie. I'll agree with Jo about Donnie not being Mikey light. But I think Mikey bring Donnie out of the shell (no pun intended) he would otherwise be in, if not for Mikey to joke with. I'm not sure how Leo and Mikey would get along. Mikey may help Leo to not take everything so seriously, which I'm sure Leo would be inclined to do, with out lighthearted Mikey to keep his protective, serious nature in check.
Wow....I respect Mikey more already.

Seems movie 1 played up Donny and Mikey a lot. It's nice how Mikey can get along so well with all of his brothers, but in the Mirage comics, I'm under the impression that he really didn't get along that well with Leo. I think Leo was much too serious for Mikey to relax around. Hm, seems I should be over in the Mikey thread. ^^

I never, never cared for the Donny and Mikey pair-up and actually get mildly annoyed when they are. To me when they are together the difference in their maturity levels is contrasted too much. But then I am basing my opinion on the interctions of Donny and Mike from 2k3 series. That seeing them together always seems to mean they are going to be wall-paper while Raph and Leo get all the glory and focus.

That did seem to be true in that recent TMNT movie. But in the 1st movie they provided most of the comic relief together, which I always look forward to, hehe. Like we said before, it's a slightly different take on Donatello's character where he's the most thoughtful but not so uptight as other incarnations.

I really didn't like movie one Donatello. People can say what they want about 2k7 movie but that was probably my favorite Donatello personality-wise. I want more of that Donny. The main problem with this, imo, is the fact that Donny and Mikey were glossed over so much, I can barely recall what his personality was like. He and Mikey were overlooked and overshadowed by Raph and Leo way too much to fully notice it, imo.
Movie 1 Donny was okay, I guess. He was a bit too goofy, though, but, it did exhibit how close he is to Mikey (like in the Mirage comics). He is thoughtful in that movie too. One part that comes to mind, was when Donny was trying to comfort Raph after he lost his sai. Movie 1 did seem to fail in Mikey and Raph's relationship, though, as those two are close too for the Mirage comics.
Movie 2 focused on the brainy part for Donny, that's probably the most well-known portrayal. Movie 3...probably the same, but I've blocked out a majority of that movie.

While I realize this is incredibly late in coming, I never stated that Donny was a follower of invisible faith, only that he has struggled with ideals or morals that could fall under the blanket of a "spiritual" dilemma. Geez, just because he is a Turtle of science does not make him void of all spiritual associations and/or personal problems that come from a place that even he can't map out. He isn't a robot.
I'll agree to disagree on this, as testament through my previously stated opinions. But to each his or her own.

I dunna Donnie...in NT:TNM (I know...what a piece of the mythos to pull from) Donatello was the most vocally opposed to Venus' shinobi mysticism as the tech-head of the group. But then again, with his master being so deeply spiritual, you'd think he'd be more open to that aspect of life/ninjitsu.

Oh definitely (and I like NM Donny, I think it was a great portrayal), please don't think I'm saying that Donatello is spiritual. Only that he could have dilemmas that could be blanketed under "spiritual". There has without a doubt been many issues (most notably perhaps of Tales) that touch upon what could be spiritual concerning Donny's character. My point is that just because he is a Turtle of science does not make him immune to the spiritual world.

I grew up loving Donatello from the old cartoon because he was the one always saving the world. He'd be disarming some doomsday device while the others fought Foot soldiers.
Movie 1 Don is okay. His jokes were funny, but Don was never, in my opinion, about being one of the funny ones. They all have a sense of humor of some kind. And he really only had a couple moments where he showed that he might actually be really smart, like the observation about the structure being able to handle all the foot soldiers climbing in. He also gets the question right about War and Peace when they're playing Trivial Pursuit. But other than that, he was cracking jokes like bringing marshmallows to the campfire. Movie 1 was probably my favorite version of Mikey, though. I love his sense of humor in that movie compared to the dumbed down versions of him in the other ones.
Movie 2 Don was great. Don was asking a very important question, one regarding their true purpose. Why are they here? Are they meant for great things? All only to find out that it was just some giant accident that they were created. That's gotta be devastating.
Movie 3 Don was basically stepping in Mike's shoes and playing the comic relief of the movie while Mike dealt with the more serious story of him developing feelings for Mitsu and their acceptance in feudal Japan. Since Mike was all serious, that left Don making the corny "Addams Family" jokes whenever he wasn't trying to fix the time scepter. I know it was Corey Feldman again, but he sounded much different than he did in the first movie.
CGI Movie Don was great, pretty much exactly how I imagine Don. But yeah, he and Mike were just shoved into the background to make it "Raphael and his Amazing Friends." That movie looked like it was gonna be about Leonardo, which would've been a fresh change of pace for the movies since he's never really been the main focus of one, but quickly became all about Raphael. Come to think about it, all Leonardo ever really does in the movies is deal with Raph, except in the third one where Raph is actually happy for a change, and in that, all Leo does is fight that Norinaga guy (I think that was his name). But I digress.
4Kids Don was great. I need to watch the rest of the show again, but from I what I recall, a lot of the Don-centric episodes were science-y and out there, like "The King." When Raph had a solo episode, he fought mobsters and city goons. When Don had a solo episode, he fought weird ogres and mythological beasts. I don't know, it was odd. I do love Same As It Never Was, though. I like that version of the character, but his solo episodes from what I remember weren't any of my favorites, save for SAINW.
I think if Don had more to do in TMNT, it might've been my favorite version of him. But because he was pushed into the background so much, I have to go with either Movie 2 or 4Kids. OT Don seemed to lead the team more than Leonardo a lot, and I don't really see Don leading.
1. Movie 2/4Kids
2. Movie 4/TMNT
3. OT
4. Movie 1
5. Movie 3

I love Donnie! he's my second fave (insanely close) to Leo. I love everything about Donnie, his personality, the bo, him being tech savy, the purple bandana, etc. the only thing keeping him at #2 for me is what seems to be his periodical lack of self confidence. in the comics there's those times when he questions himself or hesitates...i just want to shake him and say, "You're kick ass man! you can do this!"

Although he was mainly background, I agree that 2k7 Donnie was done very well. He was clearly scientific with an adeptness concerning finances (as he took care of the monetary aspects of Mikey's Carl gig) and I always thought the scene were he identified the stone as obsidian was cool because it was further testament to his knowledge of earth science which is often overshadowed by his insane IQ concerning all things tech.

Nick is trying to use stereotype looks to make Don look like the nerdy one and Mike the goofy one. I am not for or against the tooth gap but Mike having freckles is silly. Its how the character is portrayed that makes the difference not so much the way the character looks which can change as a series progresses. I love Don's voice actor but will have a time not going "Raphael" in my head since I define Rob by that voice. I do think Rob playing Don is Nick's way of trying to inject humor into him instead of playing straight man like Leo does to Mike and Raph(well sometimes) goofiness.

Yeah, exactly. There's no room for improvement. I grew up liking Donatello cause he was into learning, and to be into learning you need room to learn and realize that you're not right about everything. IDW's Don, thus far, is pretty pretentious and narrow-minded.
One thing I gotta keep in mind is that Don's narrow-mindedness is probably going to be a big part of his character development, as Tom said in response to my letter in issue #2 that Donnie is going to get some really great development. So, I'm guessing this will be it...hopefully!

Basically, Leo accepted Splinter's reincarnation theory as fact, because Splinter said it and because the Foot clan jumped him (Leo) while he was searching for Splinter (and thus, the connection between the Foot and the ancient rivalry Splinter talked about became true in Leo's mind). Donatello, from the start, has been 100% skeptical, needing the appropriate evidence to believe such a (to his mind) silly claim that the Turtles and Splinter were actually reincarnated. There was no science behind it, there wasn't any hard proof (until issue #11) that the disappearance of Splinter and the Foot clan jumping Leo was linked, nor was there proof that this tied into the reincarnation theory. So, Donnie would staunchly argue that Leo had no facts, he was jumping to conclusions, and there were a number of possible variables to consider before believing by word of mouth. This disagreement created tension between Donatello & Leonardo in almost every issue they exchanged words. Although not admitting that he believes them to be reincarnated (yet), Donnie seems to now have relaxed, taking a break from his scientific podium.
Sorry if that's confusing, I tried explaining it the best I could! But now the rivalry has had a bit of a conclusion in Donatello realizing Leonardo has been right the entire time.

There's another reason why I don't like the IDW comics. Even though I hate this relationship they created between these two, there was no clear resolvement. Is that supposed to be evident in some micro issue?:tconfuse: Why was it resolved so fast? First it was, "Oh no! Don't give me that garbage, Leo!" to "You were right, Leo. I'm sorry." What? That quickly? This Donnie complains that he needs facts for everything, but yet, we don't get the facts why he gave in and realized Leo's right? To me, that's just poor writing. In fact, this relationship never should have been done this way. This was for the sake of "making sense" or being "refreshing" without thinking that it would hurt either of the characters.:tgrumble: Here's hoping Nickelodeon does something right between Don and Leo on their animated series.

At first, I honestly very much enjoyed the Don v. Leo rivalry. It was a breath of fresh air as opposed to the typical Leo v. Raph conflicts we always see. It was the constant every issue reminder that they disagreed that got annoying. It was the same thing with Mikey liking video games, they stuffed that down your throat almost every issue and it just stopped within the last few issues. You know, we get it, Mikey likes video games. Every issue it has to brought up? Same with the Leo/Don conflict. It got redundant.
Although I would surmise that Don acknowledging Leo to be right isn't the end of this rivalry, I think for the time, we might get a break from it. I would agree that I think it should have been a bigger character moment for Don (he basically just says sorry and moves on), like a realization of sorts, but at least it wasn't just ignored.

I loved the Leo and Raph rivalry. That's what makes them who they are. Video games for Michelangelo? That's what makes him who he is. None of that gets boring. It's sometimes gets old, but it should never be taken away. That's like, "Let's not have Kryptonite be Superman's weakness anymore." You can't do that because that's what makes him vulnerable. That's what makes him Superman.:twink:
If it's not the end of the rivalry, then there's a good reason why I've stopped reading. Seems like Raphael better show his true genius because obviously, this is just wrong. Donnie must be Raph. I bet IDW is pulling our leg here, and soon, that will be revealed. Raph's not acting like Raph and Donnie is not acting like Donnie. I don't care if one's a fish out of water or this. If this is giving them room to grow, how long will it take? Shouldn't this be over now?:tgrumble:
It would have been better if Donnie was still complaining, arguing with his brother, until Leo slaps him in the face for disrespecting Splinter. Then, Leo would grab his brother by the strand of his mask, pull him to a place where they can see the Foot, and say, "So! Still think I'm nuts?!" Then Don would have been like, "Oh my god! And just to think I was being rational!" Even though I don't like where this story is going, I would have appreciated IDW writing that into their comic.

Sorry, Bauer...it was a joke. (Mr. Turtle doesn't like us calling Ch'rell Chr'ell because it only shows up a couple times over the course of the show.)
I can't think of any times Leo and Donnie bicker, except maybe when both of them are having their broody periods in season 4 and BttS.

That's like, "Let's not have Kryptonite be Superman's weakness anymore." You can't do that because that's what makes him vulnerable. That's what makes him Superman.:twink:
No, it's not. They have done that before, but that's besides the point
You know what, for a while, I was actuallly thinking this same thing. Donnie arguing with Leo? The way Raph would? Would be a crazy turn of events if this did turn out to be true. We called it if it does.
But it probably won't and I honestly don't think it will. The Donatello Micro was in character so it was just something different for IDW to do.

Anyone else ever notice that, while (the artists) Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael (or, more specifically, Raffaello) are all the respective artists' first names, Donatello was actually a nickname? His name is actually Donato, and Donatello was a "kid" nickname basically meaning, "Little Donato."

Interesting. As a side note, I've always preferred Donatello's "David" to Michelangelo's!The effeminate David with his cute little hat and everything? Interesting. I've written a compare/contrast essay on them, though not really expressing opinion in the way of preference. What is it about Donatello's David that you'd say hits the mark as to why you prefer it?

I sense a trend with the two most recent (IDW & Nick) Donatello incarnations. It is clear from the first Nick episode that Don is going to be a far bigger personality than he has been in other incarnations. To an extent, IDW's Donatello also came off as a big personality right off the bat, favoring a rather aggressive approach akin to Raphael.
I think it's really cool that Donatello's character is getting this kind of treatment, in both versions. It's fresh, and pretty intriguing.

Well, I don't mind that he made David appear feminine. I think it's sleeker and more honest than Michelangelo's. Michelangelo was idealizing the human form and suppressing some serious emotional issues. I'm interested in your essay!

I'll admit that I haven't recently watched the OT, but I don't recall this side of Donnie to the extent that it's being used in today's incarnations. He's always assertive, he's Donatello. That's just part of his character.
I don't really see your question as holding weight; Donnie's never been so aggressive in other incarnations as to suggest murdering a defeated villain like he did in IDW with Old Hob.
Concerning Nick's Donnie, I doubt we'll be seeing scenes along those lines, obviously. However, I can tell by the first episode that Don's personality is big, he stands out. Maybe it's Paulsen adding a little something there. Either way, he seems rash and ruled by his emotions (judging from one episode) while still retaining what makes Don...well, Don. I think it's a rather obvious character difference.
I think it's just been easy to forget that considering he ironically got the short stick in 2k3 & TMNT.
I love 2k3's Donatello...I don't really see how he got the short stick, really. I remember the show focusing a lot on Leonardo but at least Mikey & Don seemed to be respectfully balanced in terms of character development.

I can't either, and maybe Cubed's more up on the OT but I think he's largely exaggerating. I don't think any Turtle was really overly aggressive in that show. I also don't recall Donnie being the star of the show, because he was (sadly) the least popular Turtle, at least from what I could tell. How can you say he didn't have an aggressive personality? He literally tells both Raph and Mike off in many episodes and goes off on his own in plenty. I think its because David Wise favored him over the others due to the amount of sci-fi plots the old toon had.

Donatello's main weakness was his slow agility and many times he wouldn't be able to knock down an enemy (or fix one of his inventions) in time before it was considered useless. How can you be a good leader if you can't make quick decisions and just keep brainstorming without actually reacting, like Leo, Raph, and even Mikey could? Still, when Donatello can get the job done correctly and act quick enough, he can solve problems with ease. I enjoyed Donatello since he can expand your vocabulary and due to the fact that he also seems to be a good model about how to be a good worker.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this about movie Donnie, so I appologize if so. I was watching movie 1 today and a part struck me as another "Donnie smart moment". There is one scene where the group is at April's farmhouse and she needs something fixed. She shouts, "Donatello?!" And Casey comes up and says he's out practicing with the others...but there you have it! April looking for Don to be Mr. Fix-it. A small nod there to his "brains" along with other scenes I saw mentioned (truck, board game, etc).

I agree with you that OT Donatello wasn't the most aggressive but the most insistent on using his ideas or plans if there were times that the other Turtles didn't look to his advice if it was anything technical or science-related.
Donatello had a passive/anxious personality (which is more obvious in the OT's season 1 and 2), its just that since the OT revolved around sci-fi themes so often his scientific knowledge was heavily relied upon and therefore his character got more exposure. I think why some get the impression he is aggressive in the OT is because I've noticed its a pet peeve of Donatello's when the other Turtles mock his inventions (usually the trivial inventions that are used solely for the lair fail) or don't appreciate them when more often its because of those inventions/knowledge that saves the day or makes things easier (Turtle Van, Turtle Blimp, reconfiguring the transdimensional portal/any scientific device to stop Krang/Shredder, etc.)
I like this OT depiction of Donatello because even though he has a passive, introverted personality it shows that he's not a complete pushover which some like to stereotype him into. As much as the general TMNT comics/movies/other shows favor and leans toward Leo/Raph antagonism, in the OT I'm actually surprised that the show didn't have more Leo/Don conflict with these sci-fi themes since Donatello is more cautious in assessing the whole situation while Leo is more confident and focused on resolving it.
As for Michelangelo, during the OT times, he was THE most popular among kids because of his party attitude and there were numerous stories in the U.S.A. about how stupid kids were making their own nunchucks and hurting themselves. Besides the UK censorship, its could have possibly been another reason why his nunchucks were replaced in season 4 but yet Leo's and Raph's sharp weapons were not. I'm pretty sure if Leonardo or Raphael had the same popularity as Michelangelo, their weapons would have been changed too in order to protect the profitability/appeal of the TMNT brand.

Donatello usually hovers close to favorite turtle for me, except in the 4Kids series where he made it to the top. I liked his more subdued and generally unassuming nature. It works better for me, as a science nerd myself, when his tech aspect is more grounded and there's less of the incredibly-complicated-but-ridiculous inventions.
My favorite characterization of him is Movie II. I probably could have watched an entire film based around him and Professor Perry, and they're the main reason I like Secret of the Ooze a little better than the first one.

Donny's a bit less of a one dimensional character in this version of him. His crush on april, was always hinted at but wasn't really explored in other incarnations. It adds a bit to his character, and it'll be intrsting to see how he interacts with Casey as a result.

Well you can assume all you want about me, If that's the attitude you have, you really don't come across as someone who's pleasant to have a discussion with w.
And when I stated that post, the focus of my mind was on the 1st season of 2k3, that I just recently watched. In the Don and April interactions, I always felt that beyond Don's obvious admiration for April's intellectual abilities , he always seemed to pay her a number of compliments, and payed more attention to her than the other brothers did. That's why I said, I thought it was hinted at, not that he was head over heels in love.
For your information, and future random assumptions, I've never shipped any characters, in any anime. The only reason I even mentioned the Donny-April thing is because, I feel it gave him more depth as a character. Romance should never be a major aspect of any action adventure series.
And for future, don't say all you can do is "assume bla bla", because the reality of the situation, is you're not forced to assume anything. A less rude future response, would be appreciated.

Believe me, no one is asking you to hold anyone's hand. I just enjoy having respectful conversations, which really aren't possible after terms like "Delusional Shipper", are thrown around to start the conversation.
Trust me this isn't my first go around on a forum, I can pick up pretty quickly when someone has no intrest in being respectful.
That's nice, I didn't say you had to belive there were romantic implications, I was simply claiming that I thought it was hinted at, for the reasons I stated. The main premise of my post, was that I belived it was hinted at previously , but it's been much more explored in this incarnation, in 2012.

You probably trying to say my número dos ( two in Spanish) not doce. Doce means twelve in Spanish.

About him, what can I said. He is been my favorite one since the original series. I love mostly every incarnation of him. I love his genius intelligence and the way he built amazing vehicles for his brothers. His 2k3 version makes him so sweet especially at his subtle crush on April, and this is most noticeable at the current version. But also he has a strong character, but not quite as Raph.:tcool:

Don and Raph has always been my fav Turtles.
Raph, for being badass (but when I was a kid, I liked his weapons and snarky attitude) and Don for being smart.
2013 has given me a lot of reasons why Donatello is currently my favorite Turtle. I found him more interesting in the new show (aside from the crush on April.... which is cute sometimes and helps the character a little bit but can also hurt him) and he's my favorite to use in Out of the Shadows.
The character is focused a lot in the show and he's seemingly redefined as Season 1 drew to a close as much of what was going on was due to Don.
I like that he has been consistent in all his incarnations and he's the creative one, something I identify with. He also uses the most simple of weapons, and one I started to learn to use as well, and I do miss it but it's great to see him actually knowing how to use the staff this time (as I think the previous incarnation weren't really sure what to have him do with a big stick... he's not great with it in the original movie, for example, bur surprisingly has a decent Kata in the 3rd movie intro with ZZ Top's song playing).

It's so tough for me to pick a fav turtle, so I figured I'd post in all four of these threads. I did like Don when I was a kid. I'm sure he was my fav then. He's brainy, but I've never seen him lording it over the other guys. I loved the 2k3 version. The guy is just so passionate about learning itself. He seems the most happy when he's either tinkering with tech or just plain learning something new. He certainly puts his family first because whatever he invents is for the good of his brothers and his father. Actually, I think all the Dons from the animated universes have been this way.
I'm really lovin the 2012 Don. I know he's voiced by Rob Paulson, but it's Rob Paulson. Gone is the Raph sarcasm from the OT series. Sure I can tell it's the same guy, and yet it isn't. So far this time around, Don seems... well, like Don I guess. He's got a great heart as he always does. But here, he's blown away by this girl who seemingly hangs the moon in his eyes. He has to wonder if indeed he has a shot with April, but at the same time he's determined to give it his all no matter what. So I guess this new Don is very driven.
The OT Don is equally terrific. Barry Gordon will always be the first voice I tend to hear in my head when I think of this turtle. I think Paulson says something very similar in this 2012 panel I own on amazon instant video. The panel is focusing on the new series, but it was very sweet of Rob to say that in his eyes, Gordon is The Donatello. I'm not sure which version I like best. He's one of the four mutants who got me interested in superheroes, so he'll always have an equally special place in my heart along with the other three no matter which version he is. They're all awesome in my eyes.

Unlike OT Donnie, 2k3 Donnie is more than happy to slip aside and let someone else take the pride. He's just happy that someone has befitted from his accomplishments. He is also the most calm and collected, unlike me lol.
I also like his voice. His voice really reflects his personality.

I really love that version too. He's brainy but he's learned humility at such a young age.

Donnie was always my least favorite turtle as a kid, simply because I didn't mind him as interesting as the others as a child. When I got older though, I started to appreciate the purple one more:) He is still not my favorite but I do like him more.
As much as I like the OT, I probably like 2k3 Donnie best. I think OT Don had some interesting traits, namely his arrogance and desire to be recognized, as well as his pretty jaded view of humans at times but I think 2k3 Don is just...well, so nice. LOL, I love the way he interacts with the others and seeing him and OT Don play off one another made me crack up in Turtles Forever.
I also see Don as a quiet one that could be quite lethal if need be. His reaction to his brothers' deaths in SAINW was an excellent display of writing: pure, raw, unfiltered emotion and when it comes from someone who is normally so calm and collected, it makes a bigger impact.
I also got a chance to meet 2k3 Don's VA a few years back and he is a riot. I was snapping a few pictures of the panel and he noticed so he locked eyes with my camera and gave me about 3 awesome facial expressions. Great guy!

I like 2012 Don the most since I like his cute naive dorkyness
His crush on April not so much, I find it silly and I'm silently wishing he(and Casey to a lesser extend) do not end up with her
Haven't seen season 2 yet since I'm still watching OT but I'm waiting to know if Casey ever meets the Turtles and if Don will ever know he has a crush on her. Chaos will ensue.
Except for 2003 toon(Where he's second) though he's always third for me though I prefer Leo in all but the 80s toon and I like Mikey better than him except for the recent two toons

Donnie has always been my favorite one. And it's not because purple is my favorite color.
But he varies from incarnation to incarnation, particularly with his companions.
OT Donatello is the smart one and does use the weapons and things he creates to assist the others in battle or make their lives easier. However there are moments where his curiosity does get the better of him which gets himself and the other Turtles in trouble.
However like other people pointed out there was is an arrogance there. But this is largely due to the fact he wanted his intellect to be respected and acknowledged by not only his companions and teacher, but by the whole world.
Relationships with the others is largely the same as they are friends not brothers in the OT incarnation. But in many cases he is close to Leonardo.
2003 Donatello already has the appreciation of his family for all he does. So much of the time he studies things for his own personal knowledge. He is more humbled and peaceful member of the group but unlike Leo he will resort the to Spiritual Practice in desperate situations. He does have a crush on April, but it's short lived and he's content to just be a brother figure to her and Casey.
But given the choice between fighting and settling things peacefully, Donnie would rather settle things peacefully.
Relationships with his brothers:
Leo- Leo and Don have a fairly close relationship. Don obviously looks up to Leo and Leo relies on Donatello's insight to help them through situations. And Leo even openly acknowledges to Splinter that he feels lost without Donnie on one occasion. Leonardo does have a rather protective streak when it comes to Donnie.
Raph-Raph and Donnie have a well rounded relationship. While he doesn't really give to bits about all the science stuff, he does give Donatello credit for the end result. Like Leo he does have a protective streak for Donatello and will often have Donnie's back in battle. But occasionally he will call Donnie out for being the geek of the family.
Mikey-Mikey and Donnie have a brotherly relationship being the younger members of the team. Mikey does assist Donnie in battle and they are partnered in a number of missions. Donnie does tease Mikey about as much as the others do. But he is also just as protective as well.
IDW Donnie (I've only just got into IDW series) is the second oldest in this incarnation when compared to the other incarnations where he's third oldest. He is a little more judgmental with things that defy his way of thinking. Such as his views about whether Raphael may actually be alive after they've been searching for a year. And has his doubts as to the explanation about them being reincarnations of a family that was executed in feudal Japan.
Relationships with his brothers. I can't say much on this as I've only read to Issue five at this time, but I have heard views on others.
Leo-Donnie seems to have the tense relationship Raph has with Leo in most other incarnations. Which does lead to the two calmer members of the group butting heads at times. Donnie will step back and admit he was wrong when proven so, and also takes charge of looking after the group during City Fall.
Raph-Have a good relationship as far as I've seen, but Raph doesn't have any particular interest when it comes to computers and science.
Mikey-Good relationship as far as I have seen thus far. He does take Mikey's side when Mikey comments about doing something else instead of the fruitless searches for Raph.
Nick Donatello is a blend of his 2003 and OT counterparts. Like OT Donatello' Donnie would appreciate it if his genius was acknowledged more by his brothers and Sensei. As he has pointed out on a couple of occasions, he is smarter then all three of his brothers combined. While like his 2003 counterpart he normally will study things for his own personal knowledge, and he has a crush on April. He often fantasizes about April and himself and their relationship together. But has privately admitted to himself that any relationship he and April will have would be nothing but fantasy. Still that hadn't stopped him from hoping.
He does take his ninjitsu training a bit more seriously then in previous incarnations, but still feels like he has trouble keeping up with his brothers. He also has lost faith in his weapon on one occasion because he feels it holds him back, and Raph doesn't help matters. And occasionally Donnie has been treated as the expendable member of the team.
Relationships with his brothers.
Leo-Donnie and Leo have a respectful relationship, but it's a bit more testy then it has in previous incarnations. Donnie does respect his older brother as a leader of the team, but will take issue with him occasionally. Leo does see Donnie's intellect as useful, and does occasionally show interest in some of the things Donnie has created.
Raph- Raph and Donnie have a volital relationship. Like other incarnations Raph doesn't have any interest or patience for anything scientific. And would often be the first to criticize Donnie when anything goes wrong during an experiment. He also has called Donnie out on his fantasy relationship with April calling it sad-orable and pathetic. But he still cares about Donnie's welbeing and has comforted Donnie on a couple of occasions.
Mikey- Mikey and Donnie do have the most brotherly relationship. Donnie does tease Mikey and he does get irritated by him on many occasions. But he also cares for Mikey just as much.

Donnie is usually my least favorite Turtle, but it might be because he interacts the least with my fave, Raph, out of the brothers. But I do enjoy his humor from the different shows. The 1990 movie, he was a hoot with Mikey, and he had the best line/moment in that film. "You're a claustrophobic" it's still hilarious to this day.
But I think my favorite incarnation would be the 2007. He was just right, and I loved his "it's not that kind of phone line".
But to be honest, I remember reading a comic where he had I think Baxter hostage, or someone, and was trying to get him to talk, and when he didn't need him anymore, Donny just picked up some space blaster and blew the dude away, and I hope to never see that incarnation in the movies/cartoon. It just seems so out of character to me. That's something Raph would do, not Donny.

^I disagree. Don is much more cold and calculating than people give him credit for. Donnie tried to find something redeemable within Baxter, and kept his cybernetic torso "alive" for about a decade or so. After conversing and interacting with him sporadically through that time (not wanting to put such a great mind to waste) he wanted to find an ounce of goodness in him to justify letting him live. After a while he realized this wasn't working out and just kills him.
And as much of a hot head that Raph is I doubt he would ever hold anyone prisoner for that long only to kill them. He'd kill em then and there.
The same with Leo, maybe Mikey. But Don is a tactician and takes only calculated risks.
And there are glimpses of this in many incarnations, like in Mirage with the above example, or straight up owning a Drunken Casey Jones. Even in the OT with his f**k humans attitude.
Donnie is just awesome all around, he and Mikey are my favorite turtles because of their contrasting personas.
He is in no way a pacifist, but he would rather avoid confrontation, or use technology rather than physically attack, but that doesn't mean he isn't able to kick butt and completely annihilate people if he wanted to. He's kinda like Batman in a way. Why kill you when I can maim you? Which makes night of the Dark Turtle a favorite of mine.

Actually Donnie was created to be a pacifist Eastman and Laird did say in an interview that they did create Donnie as the pacifist of the group.
Donnie isn't a pacifist in the sense that he avoids killing or hurting people entirely. As we have seen he doesn't have any problems with kicking ass and taking names in the Mirage and the 2012 series.
In the mirage comics he has one part where he shoots an elite foot soldier with a gun and then throws the gun away in horror at what he just did. And when he takes the plutonium core out of that nuke that militia group was going to detonate in the city. He doesn't take the death of the militia leader as a victory. And even says that even though the person was a flawed individual, he was still an individual who desired change.
The way I see it is that Donnie would kill or become violent only if driven too it, or the person in general is too evil to be considered human like the Shredder or Stockman. As he says "I kept you alive because I felt there was something I could learn from you. But now I see your are nothing but evil through and through."
But other wise if the fight can be dealt with logically he will go that route.
With the 2012 version, he is violent yes. But the Metalhead episode he was treating battle as if it were a video game. When you play a video game you can be as violent as you like because you know the damage you are doing isn't real. And unconsciously Donnie is placing that distance when he was fighting using Metalhead, and it was only when he lost the electronic signal that the situation became real.
I think Donnie's pacifistic side is something he's struggling with because he's afraid his brothers will think less of him as a fighter if he isn't as gung-ho as the rest of them. However that side is starting to manifest itself, particularly in the episodes involving the Pulverizer.
In 'The Pulverizer', Donnie tells Splinter that he knows the Pulverizer will go out and fight regardless. So by teaching him some basic moves he would be able to face groups like the Purple Dragons and have the fight be more even.
Pulverizer returns, Donnie was the only Turtle who was pointing out the Pulverizer was an innocent person who was needlessly involved. And also the fact he knew the Turtles put him in danger. Which is why Donnie was telling him to get out of the Foot. And as for stopping the Mutation from taking place, I think he may have vague memories of mutating himself. And if not they he knows from other people who were mutated that it is a rather painful experience and that it destroys people in a way. So at episodes end, it felt like something in Donnie shifted.
Mutagen Man Unleashed, Donnie is already upset because he lost April and he's frustrated because all attempts to create the Retromutagen were becoming a failure. And to top it all off the boy he is trying to restore to human breaks free and could potentially hurt April. So in order to save the girl he loved, he is forced to hurt and betray another person who trusted him. And that act breaks something in Donnie, because he doesn't see the action as a victory.
So perhaps Donnie's pacifistic side is starting to come to the forefront and will be explored in a later episode. And once he accepts that part of himself, he will become a better fighter.

That's a great assessment. I've always liked the idea of Donnie as a pacifist, it just makes sense for the "nerdy" one. Most of the "nerds" I've known (myself included here) are not violent by nature, and would rather resolve conflicts with logic and reason, talking things out or trying to find a non-violent solution to problems- unless sorely provoked. Even a pacifist has their breaking point. That's how I see Donnie. He's fine, even peaceful, unless someone truly threatens him or those he cares about. Then he kind of snaps and that same cold, logical side becomes something dangerous. It's a nice hidden side that makes him really interesting, unlike Raph's perma-anger thing. I'd rather see Donnie or Mikey suddenly go ballistic than Raph in another rage, because I know it takes far more for them to go there then it does with him.

Purple is my favourite colour, and I loved the gentle personality he had in the 2003 series (and it just had to be him who bore the brunt of traumatic experiences)
And I as much as I love Donnie in the current series, his obsession with April is starting to become the definition of his character and is making him look creepy and stalkerish - initially I thought his crush on April was cute but she was his first crush, not his only one and any romance that develops between the two will feel forced to me because it's pandering to a young fandom that seems to have an unhealthy view of romance.
We're in an age where persistent pursuit of a love interest to win their favor is recognized as creepy and potentially dangerous; I sincerely hope the writers realize they have some responsibility to show younger audiences that this type of behavior shouldn't be acceptable, no matter how "cute" or "romantic" it appears to be.

He often saves the day in many of the incarnations. And I think he's the first Turtle that tough boy Raphael has complimented as well due to his inventions. With Raph's bike in 2k3 "You are the Turtles man!" and Raph's Go-Cart thingymajig "Don, you are AWESOME!"
Damn, they really need more Don and Raph bonding episodes.

So what's Donatello's personality? Does machine isn't personality trait, it's the thing that you do. I can't stand the Nick version, he's yells way to much, he's got more anger issues than Raph and his obsession with April only makes him unlikable, hey idiot you are a giant turtle, she'll never fall for you and he's supost to be the smart one?
Donnie isn't only suposed to be the smart one he's also supost to be the wise one if anything ever happened to leo he would be the one to lead, i don't see that in this version...

Hi all. I know it's been a long time, but I'm finally getting back into the turtle fandom...again. A couple of days ago, I finally gave the 2K12 series a chance. I started watching Thursday night after work and finished it this morning (it's Sunday for me here).
I've been hesitant all of this time to even watch the show because a teen April just didn't sit right with me. I just prefer her as older and the "mother-type" to the turtles, ya know? I was also worried that if she was their peer, that she'd be around way too much and one of the turtles would crush on her or something and lo and behold...we get Donny.
That aside, I'm slightly indifferent towards Donny for the 2K12 series. The things I like about him in the other incarnations I've been exposed to (OT, Archie, Mirage, TNM [although a I've said, I just don't remember enough about the series as a whole to say much of anything]) is still cool, but I just can't favor him for this incarnation for some reason.
I don't know, but his crush on April is cute at times, based on what I've seen, but other times I find it a bit bothersome and grating. I also find his arrogance a bit....I dunno. I'm so used of him being kind of calm, but he does have his outbursts and that bothers me slightly for some reason.
Things I do like, his intelligence as always, and I like his interactions with the other turtles. Sometimes, his interactions with Raph makes me think of Mirage Donny. I also like how he does seem close to Mikey (which also makes me think of their Mirage counterparts). I also like the fact that he is coming across as a bit pacifistic despite not hesitating to fight or not doing so as much. Personally, I feel that Donny would have the upper hand most times if he used his naginata. I don't think I've seen him use it yet. We've only seen it being used accidentally. I haven't watched season 2 yet, does he use it then?
Oh, even though I'm not big on cg animation, I do like the fact that Donny is the tallest of the four. Isn't he the biggest of the turtles in the Mirage comics in general?
Anyway, I guess I need to watch more of the series to get more of an appreciation for Donny's character. I like him....but I just can't favor him, and getting down to it, I think this is the first medium of the franchise that I've been exposed to where I actually can't favor either of them fully...but if choosing, seems Donny loses here. I can't believe it, but I'd say maybe Leo may be inching up over the other three.
As I continue on with this series, I'm hoping beyond hope that the open crush (seriously, you'd have to be blind not to see it....and if April doesn't...well... lol), doesn't end up defining Donny's character or that it becomes such a huge part of his character that it overshadows other aspects of his character and development. What do you guys think for those who are more caught up with the series? Does it feel like the show is going in this direction?

Nick Donnie is my favourite incarnation of the character. I like that he's not just "the smart one" - he has his own flaws, nuances and ticks. The April crush is... problematic in its portrayal, but I understand what Ciro was trying to go for. Snarky Don just makes sense to me; he's so overly logical but that doesn't always translate into his ability to communicate with people who aren't on his wavelength.

Well, if you count the Palladium RPG player stats or the Playmates toys stats? But I'm pretty sure the former was unofficial, not confirmed by the Mirage creators, and pretty weird to boot. And in Playmates Don was shortest by like a foot.

It's never cute. It's creepy and unacceptable and people need to stop calling it cute or approving of it in any way possible. It's horrible. Never support it. If somebody acted towards me in a similar way Donnie acts towards April in the 2k12 series, I would be downright afraid of that person and would definitely be considering legal action.

Too late, it already does define his character. 2k12 Donnie's character is nothing but April and the occasional nerdism. Half the **** he says don't even make sense.

The crush is problematic, therefore Ciro should not be excused at all and the portrayal should not be considered positive in any way shape or form unless it improves. I will not tolerate it. Canon does not even bother displaying that Donnie's behaviour is highly inappropriate, therefore sending a message to the viewers [which, need I remind you, are marketed to be children] that acting this way towards the person of your affections is okay. It is absolutely not okay.

I don't like the crush. Plain and simple. And no, it's not because he's a turtle and she's human (and part-Kraang apparently. As if we can't make April more of a special 'plot device' for this show already instead of just a three-dimensional character) it's just written poorly and does no beneficial favors for either character aside from giving the fans the misconception that "romance makes characters more interesting and developed."

I think Donnie's crush is innocent (after all it's a kids program and won't get but so twisted/dark...at least I would assume, and most of it is played for comedic effect). It's not like the writers are intending for it to be taken in a way that's being a stalker.
However, as to your comment about "genders reversed", I have had the roles reversed and had a female stalker for years. Having a restraining order didn't help. Moving out of town over 100 miles away didn't help either! Crazy $**t!! :o
All of this started in the early 90's and still continues on and off to this day. She's absolutely nutty! :tmad:

None of you would complain if the genders were reversed...
And clearly you know our personal opinions and ticks, right?

Ok maybe YOU guys would care, but what I'm trying to say is that the general public would think it's funny if a girl was stalking the man, but creepy the other way around.

There is a time and a place for that sort of argument. This is not one of them.
Stalker behaviour and creeping on people is not okay regardless of the genders of either party involved. That also ties in to why this crush, regardless of its "innocent" nature or portrayal on a children's program, is still problematic. It teaches the children watching that it's OK to be like this. We learn terrible behaviours as children.

I don't really agree with that; while it probably wouldn't be viewed as being quite as creepy, there's no way everyone would be fine with the following and unsolicited picture taking!

It's not just that it's creepy it's that it's his whole charachters, this Donnie has only two settings, Yelling and slobering all over April same as Mikey who has only
Beast Boy and slobering all over Pizza...

We learn terrible behaviours as children. The innocence of his crush is what I find cute, but I can't fully agree with what you're saying here about how the show is making it ok. The reactions of the other three who have openly said that it's creepy (or thinking it) speaks volumes. Like when Mutagen Man was going after April and Donny pointed out how, given the time, she'd probably be in the park. I think Leo was the one to ask how he would even know that and Donny bashfully and slightly embarrassingly told them that he followed her. The reactions from the other three was like, "Dude, that's creepy."
That aside, I didn't know that he had any photos of April without her knowing. I only recall that photo of him pushing her on the swing. He keeps that out in the open, and April hangs in his lab. Seems she would've seen it and complained if it had been taken without her knowledge.
That aside, I wonder if this crush is going to come back and bite him in the shell.
Oh, yeah I've grown used to his outbursts. They're more humorous to me now.

Well, if you count the Palladium RPG player stats or the Playmates toys stats? But I'm pretty sure the former was unofficial, not confirmed by the Mirage creators, and pretty weird to boot. And in Playmates Don was shortest by like a foot.I think I may have been thinking about the toys. My mistake.

Spying with a robot? Taking pictures of her without permission? Taking it upon himself to follow her when she didn't want to see him?Wait...when did he spy on her with a robot?

He didn't...well, he kinda did. He was controlling Metalhead so April ad the robot were on a mission, and at one point they're waiting on a rooftop so Don zooms the camera in on April's face. So he kinda spied on her, but that's not the whole reason why he used Metalhead.

Also, it doesn't matter if she "complained" or not, it's still creepy. Stop excusing his actions. They are not acceptable.

He spied on her.Sorry, I disagree. If he'd made and used Metalhead for that exact reason, I'd agree. For that scene, I felt that even if Donny had been physically there, it would've pretty much been the same. Taking glances and shyly and quickly turning away because he's alone with a girl he likes.

Donnie's actions are a little weird, but I think he's toned it down a little now, and I don't think it defines him or April as a character.

I know
Even the Donatellostan admits it -- he spied on her.
It doesn't matter what his intent was, it doesn't matter what he made Metalhead for nor what he wanted to use it for. The fact of the matter is he spied on her and that isn't acceptable behaviour and I will never condone it.

It's not funny. I'm not taking it too seriously. I'm remembering that the target audience is young children and that showing a character who is supposed to be a role model doing disgusting things is going to teach these children that doing these disgusting things is okay.
This is WHY stalkers happen. They think it's okay because of the media they consume interpreting it as funny or acceptable. (http://vgperson.tumblr.com/post/21533650696/help-the-girl-i-like-wont-respond-to-my-emails)

I find some of his antics actually funny, like when he's around April and makes a fool of himself or embarrasses himself. What I don't like is when he does anything I find to be actually stalkerish, like how he knew where she'd be that one time when they were going to protect her from Mutagen Man (yeah, it was helpful info, but if he'd said something like, "She told me about it" as opposed to "I followed her" that would've sat better with me) or that other ep when they were patrolling and he stopped the others and said something about them all visiting April and knowing the distance exactly from the spot they were at. I found that a bit creepy. Ironically, for both of these instances, the other three found it "creepy".
I'm glad they toned down on that, though as the show has gone on by the looks of it. I've watched up to ep 18 of season 2 and the crush isn't bothering me as much anymore and I guess it's because he's not acting like a stalker all that much anymore. I find his competing with Casey kind of funny.
Thinking about it, I think they're portraying Donny's crush in this way to show how socially inept he is when it comes to this type of thing and how awkward first crushes can be. He and his brothers have been underground and didn't have any interaction with people until meeting April. Would they truly know what's fully acceptable or not?
That aside, does anyone know if there's an inside joke in the series since they have Donny with the crush in the first place. Even in the Manhattan Project episode, Donny was attracted to OT April.

This would be just fine if the show itself had addressed this and went out of their way to mention that it wasn't acceptable to act this way. I think it could have made for an interesting take on Donatello's character if they had just done the simple job of PORTRAYING it as a bad thing. They did not.

Or maybe stop watching the show??!! :ohwell:
I think people are way over-thinking and over-analyzing this. Yes, that's MY opinion and everyone else is entitled to theirs. But if something in a Nickelodeon kid's show is bothering you this badly, then perhaps the best thing would be to change the dial.
And no...I'm not making light of "stalking" and if you read a few pages back I have experienced a stalker first hand. I've had to go through the legal system, I've had a restraining order, I've moved, changed phone numbers, etc. So just because I'm a male don't think that I'm insensitive to the issue. And by the way...I've dealt with it for well over 20 years and I'm always wondering when she's going to pop back up.

I didn't tell you to stop watching it. Maybe you should re-read what I wrote (and what you quoted me as saying). I suggested not watching it if it upset you so much. You are entitled to criticizing whatever you like.

I thought they kind of did though? Like with his brothers saying that him following April was creepy, and Splinter telling him that you can't force someone to like something? They definitely could've made it a bit plainer, but they do only have 20 minutes per episode.
Not wanting to start an argument, just playing devil's advocate. :D I've had a stalker (ex partner) whom I had to get a restraining order against (which turned out to be completely useless), so it is a subject that I'm definitely sensitive too as well.

If this happened, I missed it, which is entirely plausible. But if a character is doing a reprehensible action that the writers don't want to condone, they need to make it clearer that this is the case. An example, something as simple as a single character giving Donnie a look of disgust for even a second whenever he mentions April? That'd be an excellent start.
And yes, I need to let it be known I'm not actually angry at anybody [for the most part]. I'm bringing my opinions to the table expecting them to be contested, because an opinion can't be refined unless it's met with criticism.

I wouldn't say it's dumb, but I'm sure he does realise the chances of a human wanting to pursue a romantic relationship with a mutant turtle is slim. I definitely know some humans that'd be up for that sort of thing, at any rate.

You guys never had a crush on some one in school and stared at them through the whole class? Or took a path to the next class that just happen to cross the path of that person? Or come up with any silly excuse to try to show off in front of that person?
Now imagine that on top of being a mutant turtle where you never really get those chances.
I actually dont like this characterization cause it's more of a pile-up of standard nerd stuff that doesnt really need to be there, but i dont think it's all that mega creepy.
