View Full Version : Thread Crapping

DarthRaphael
04-14-2003, 09:40 AM
[Edit: DarthRaph, please see my post in Mod Discussion. To everyone else, please disregard this thread. This rule will not be enforced, especially in GD. --Krang]

I've noticed that there are a lot of threads that are going off-topic un-necessarily. Most of the time a conversation is carried on between several people that has nothing to do with the thread topic. I've especially noticed this from a specific group of people which I will leave unnamed for now.

I will ask that you try your best to keep threads on-topic.
If you want to discuss a different topic, please start a new thread.

I will start editing posts to start, and then delete posts if it continues.
So please do not force me to use my mod abilities.

If anyone has issues / questions / concerns regarding this, please respond to this thread.

Thank You

DR
DarthRaphael

I can understand about things going completely random in the main forum, but I don't see the point of getting strict about the General Discussion forum. Unless "Discuss Anything Off-Topic Here" has suddenly come to mean "Discuss Anything Off-Topic As Long As It's Completely Related To the Topic At Hand".

It just seems like nitpicking, that's all.

Tetsu Deinonychus
04-14-2003, 10:58 AM
You know Darth,
Sometimes conversations just go off topic and its nobody's fault. Nobody just decides to go off topic. The flow drifts away from the topic so gradually noone notices. The only extreme case of Off topic I can think of was solved quite peacefully (by Horse Techie I believe), by the creation of the Yaoi thread.

Besides going Off Topic is the Fan-forum equivalent of Jay walking. I'm sure you, yourself have done it once or twice. I guess you just like to "cast the first stone".

Nickokapo
04-14-2003, 10:59 AM
True...well staying off topic has always been a rule around here, i guess now it's being more seriously enforced..
Well if i have to start a new thread everytime im about to go off ffrom the main topic then so be it :tgrumble: but i dont like starting threads.
Oh, if you are going to be as strict you might aswell check the introduction forum, where 1 out of 2 threads turn into some kind of RPs after someone is introduced...nothing wrong with that, in fact im FINE THEY ARE HAVING FUN THAT WAY AND WOULDNT LIKE THE FORUM TO BE CHANGED
...
But, it just seemed unfair..

Yeah, sounds like SOMEONE is having a power trip....not to mention any names or anything. This is a fun forum for ANYTHING to happen. As long as we dont try to harm each other mentally, physically or spiritually, I think we can handle this forum on our own thank you very much.

Nickokapo

I wouldn't call it power trip as he's trying to get some order here, but i do disagree with this, at least in the general discussion forum i do.

Come on, everyone, relax. We're not trying to impede on your thread enjoyment, its jsut that we're concenred about things getting clogged up wiht a bunch of nonsense threads (the "which is better" threads, for example)

I admit, I've gotten off-topic so many times, (with clones, etc....)but I just try to mention the original topic, and keep it going. *shrugs* Just do what you can, so we can keep a clean happy forum :D

I've already agreed on not to make any more which is better threads, in fact, it were those very own lame threads that made me turn to the general discussion forum, i'm not saying i wont follow this rule, i respect every mod decission (do i have any options ;) ) but i am not happy with it, period, at least not in the general discussion forums, they're suppossed to be for offtopic stuff.

I agree that the "Which is Better" threads are very annoying. And, there's nothing wrong reminding us of a rule, but I think He's going a bit too far.

Zenrick
04-14-2003, 11:47 AM
its like saying "Hey you guys that think differently......THINK LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO!" You cant control something like this. Isnt the word 'general' in reference to being 'broad' and such? how broad is a forum that cant say exactly what they think about the topic? So heres a question.....can we make a topic about whatever the crap we want? well I guess that was rhetorical 'cause the answer is yes..........so why cant we say whatever we want? whatever its just gay.......

Nickokapo
04-14-2003, 11:54 AM
It's not gay, it's BI!Will someone please think of the children?! :(
And what he means is that we can make threads as long as we dont drift away from the main topic, which i found quite restricting in a forum of this nature (im talking about the general discussion forum here.) but there's not much i can do about it :P

Leo656
04-14-2003, 11:55 AM
I know what they're trying to do, and the motive is fine. The "Which is Better" threads, for example, are a pain in the ass and a big reason why I've committed most of my villainy here in General lately.

But those threads don't exactly fall under "Going Off-Topic", do they? I think that's more of a "Posting Pointless Threads" kind of thing. You're talking about going OT within a thread, and that's something else entirely.

Personally, and this is just me, but I would rather see someone go OT WITHIN a thread, and have that OT-ness be contained, rather than an entire new thread be created for the sole purpose of continuing a brief, random, OT conversation. If someone is talking about TMNT 2: Secret of the Ooze, and I feel like making a Kevin Nash joke, I'm not gonna start an entire new thread for the purpose of one joke.

I aint mad at ya Machias, ya know I got nuthin' but love for ya. And I'm not mad at the other Mods either, I know what they're trying to accomplish. There's better ways to accomplish it is what I'm saying. The system's been working fine the way it's been, for the most part. And like I said, reminding us to stay on-topic in the General forum is counterproductive just by nature.

But if you want us to try and tone down the lewdness and references to Stooge-love, I think we can at least give it a shot.

Tetsu Deinonychus

He's even threatening to delete posts for crying out loud!
He even said "Don't force me to use my mod abilities" Isn't this a tad severe a thing to say about simply going off topic?
I mean this is a fan forum. It's not like we're the U.N. or anything we're just a bunch of TMNT fans having fun for pity's sake.

What the fudge?
I mean this is general discussion, so lets make it general. Dude if DR starts deleting threads and posts i'm going to get mad. He's acting like a Nazi, IMO. I mean its one thing not to start useless threads about "which is better" but not to get off topic in the general discussion is down right being like a tyrant.

I just want to hear what the big man, KRANG, has to say on the subject.

Nickokapo
04-14-2003, 01:09 PM
Damn it, now everyone's calnig DR nazi and such  i'm against this too, but calm down, it's not so freakin' bad..
I do agree with you, this IS the general discussion forum and think offtopicness should be allowed.
Now if you're gonna use it in the tmnt forums only go for it, but if its gonna be applied everywhere, even the offtopic forums, then its not worth the price...of course that's just my opinion :p

Leo656
04-14-2003, 01:14 PM
That was exactly my point.

Just to relate an experience from the Lords of Pain boards, where I used to post frequently, stuff like this eventually led to a flood of anti-Mod threads and some individual posters going so far as to declare "open war" on certain mods. I for one do NOT think we need to see people with anti-Mod sigs, or threads dedicated solely to calling one of the Mods a "tyrant".

I've seen it happen, many times on many boards. Ask yourself if a drop of control is worth all the people who are eventually going to go so far as to get themselves Warned or Banned.

CookSux

Anyone notice the rise in stupid ass threads lately? Especially from Tokka creating a brand new thread per comparison. Which is better, new TMNT or old TMNT? Which is better, old Shredder or new Shredder? How about this one... Which would you want, a kick in the face, or a punch in the balls?

Tetsu Deinonychus

Alright, I came here a little late, but I too have seen many threads go far off topic. Some people (not mentioning names) have the nerve to talk like it is a chatroom and bring aim-type conversations here, while others are confused as to what they are talking about. Other conversations do go off topic and constantly threads are being interlocked...I see people talking about one thread in another...I can see how this all can bug DR...

Nickokapo
04-14-2003, 03:43 PM
Is it that bad?!I mean this is for discussing afterall.
Maybe i could agree on not mentioning other threads in threads that have nothing to do with that one, but...oh well, i guess it'll be pointless for me to discuss this, after all, whatever decission might be made, someone will turn out to be pissed off :p

Tokka-B
04-14-2003, 04:00 PM
It isn't about what can or cannot be said in this forum, it is about staying relevant with the right thread. If you feel like going off on tangents about melons and such go ahead and make a thread, same for wrestling and aim chats...

My prediction is that nothing is going to change.

People are still going to post whatever they want to.

Mods will feel "forced" to Warn and Ban people for minor infractions.

Posters will complain.

General discontent will ensue.

Well it is true, mods will still try and get control since they know they don't have much power, and what they do have is mostly responsibility....

In the end though, I don't think mods can hold up a ruling like this in a forum with hundreds of active members....

Nickokapo
04-14-2003, 04:55 PM
Something like this would come eventually, as more people would join the mods would need to be stricter when enforcing the rules.

Leo656
04-14-2003, 05:03 PM
As far as I'm concerned, the Mods have always been fair to the best of their ability. I'm buds with a lot of them. I just think this ruling is gonna cause a backlash, and it's just pointless.

1) The mods can't agree on what they're cracking down on. Some say they're opposing the "Which is Better?" threads. Good. However, some are saying they're cracking down on OT-ness within a thread itself, something totally unrelated. If they can't even get on the same page, how can they enforce the rules?

2) The Mods are just as guilty of the OT-ness as anyone else.

3) The fact that nothing has even been DONE yet and people are still referring to DR as a "Nazi" does NOT bode well for the future.

Instead of going after minor infractions, Mods should stick to concerns like spammers and flamers. Otherwise, people are just gonna feel like they're being dictated to, and they're gonna be scared to post lest they get in trouble for "Being Off-topic". There's too many people here for this to be worth anyone's trouble, in my opinion.

I, for one, am going to continue on as always. I stopped saying "sh*t". That's as passive as I get, people.

Leo656
04-14-2003, 05:10 PM
I think it just got to the point where people were making countless "Which is Better" threads just for the sake of being dumb, and that's what the problem was.

A while ago on Lords of Pain, someone got tired of people constantly bashing The Undertaker, and started a "Respect for The Undertaker" thread. A flood of threads like "Respect for HHH", "Respect for Big Boss Man" and even "Respect for Doink the Clown" followed, just for the sake of someone trying to annoy the heck out of people.

Same deal. It started off fine, then went overboard. I barely even go in General TMNT Discussion because of it.

To make some things more clear,

I posted this in the GD forum so more people would see it, but the off-topic ideas don't need to be adhered as much in the GD forum. I'm more talking about the other forums like New TMNT discussion. GD is GD.

Intro forums - the RP is the Technodrome's unique way of welcoming new people, so continue to do so.

OK Darth Raph,
But sometimes new subjects come from old subjects. That's how the Yaoi thread came to be.
Should we cut, paste, and quote the statement that led to the new subject or what?

I agree with the most of you about the "Which is Better" threads. They should stop.

If it makes anyone feel better, deleting posts is a somewhat extreme measure to correct a thread. I would not choose to delete a post in GD unless it was offensive, against rules, etc. I would delete posts in other forums if attepmts were made to get a topic back on track but were unsuccessful, but again it is more of a last resort. Generally my way of doing things is to add my own edit to an offending post, or to make my own post in a thread where I think some action needs to be taken for whatever reason.

I'm sorry that my original post was misunderstood, but I try to make anything I do good for the board. If some people want to be mad at me, that is fine. I'm not on the net to make friends. There is always a mod that people don't like and if it is me I'm OK with that. With the board growing as it is, some order needs to be kept.

Tokka-B
04-14-2003, 07:18 PM

BTW darth i dont hate you or anything, i was worried the rule would be used in a wrong way and thus quite ticked off, but got nothing personal against you.
@ tokka: yeah...in fact most of the bashers got to know the tmnt because of the toons, so biased might not be the right word...i just hate it nevertheless, but whatever :P

DR you weren't just unclear, you were rude!

It's OK now though. You're forgiven.
You must have been stressed out.

I'm not trying to disrupt a natural flow of conversation, but deliberate off-topic posts. There are always going to be items that relate to a topic, but not exactly to what the thread topic is about. There is no problem here. It is posts that ask people what they had for dinner in a thread about trading cards.

Nickokapo - no worries man. I should have been more specific in my original post about the forums.

Aite...no hard feelings darth?good :) because i was not aiming to piss anyone off, just to show my disagreement with this rule if used too strictly.
I'll try not to go off topic...but if i drift from a topic about a leo mask to a conversation about shredder...well...i dunno..i'll try to help it, but im bound to do that in most threads.

But, what was the answer to my previous question about when drastically new topics arise from old ones?

OK DR,
But, what was the answer to my previous question about when drastically new topics arise from old ones?

Simple, PM a mod to split the topic for you. Continue to use the original thread until it is split. I would be most happy to split a thread for you if you asked.

Please note that one of my main problems with said rule enforcement was that it could possibly draw a line between the Mods and the posters, something nobody wants to see happen.

It's kinda funny how a lot of people got real upset over the whole thing considering that, more than likely, DR was talking about me and my crew. :P

By the way, DR, you CAN feel free to address us as "nWo Tech". I'd prefer it that way, if we are in fact who you were referring to. I for one wouldn't be offended.

Problem solved, everything can calm down again. Once again, I got nothin' but love for the Mods, despite this misunderstanding.

Oh, except HT. I was saving those beer cans, and that neat freak went and threw 'em out...

I don't get it leo, you say you have love for the mods yet you say that there can't be a line that seperates the mods from the common folks...

Mods deserve some specialty, I personally think that a mod has more responsibility than fun...

What I meant was that, from what I've seen, the Mods and the other posters here get along quite well. Very rarely are there any Mod/Poster conflicts that become public. For the most part, everybody lives and let lives.

My concern was that, in the future, posters would come to resent the Mods "cracking down" and would start to lash out. It's happened before on other boards I've been on, where "(Mod's Name) Is An A$$hole" threads were almost a daily thing. Heck, it started to happen here today, what with people calling DR a "nazi" and threatening all kinds of action.

I don't want there to be an overt line drawn between "Mods" and "Normal Posters". Things have been fine so far, and they should stay that way.

DR: Thanks for clearing that up, I just assumed when you mentioned a "group" that you meant me and my home-piece GK, and our hanger-on Nicko (Just kiddin' Nicko) :P

I wasnt worried for the mod-poster conflicts, i agree they deserve more respect for being mods, but i treat everyone equally, i was worried about the forums themselves, getting so strict it'd lose most of its fun...but yeah, i know what you mean leo, since people started getting angry at darth already  fortunately everything should go back to normal now that it has been cleared up.

Just wanted to mention that if a mod makes a rule, that doesn't necessarily mean Shredder and I agree with it, and we can choose not to enforce it. So if you see a mod post a strict rule like what everyone thought DarthRaph meant, I'm most likely not going to enforce it, so there's no need to get upset about it. BTW, mods can't ban. They can warn people, but all bans have to be approved by Shredder or me.

Will anyone mind if I lock this thread? I don't think it has a purpose anymore. I'd rather forget it happened.

FYI - I will only be requiring people to adhere to the rules that KRANG and SHREDDER lay down. I won't be posting any more sticky topics like this one.

I'm sorry for the trouble this caused.

DR

The official rules read:
1) Please try to keep the messages on-topic for the most part.
2) Attacking other members on the forums is not allowed.
3) Posting useless posts just to increase your rank is not allowed.
4) No form of spam/advertising is allowed on the forums.

Anyway I just hope that people won't be all scared to disagree or even argue with a mod, because that proves that mods have control over what we think.

I have to add that Krang or Shredder have the final say in anything that goes on here. I suggest not arguing with a mod that is enforcing the official rules of thetechnodrome.com, but as this thread showed, the Admins may/will agree with you and not the mod in some cases. So my advice is to be careful in how you interact with mods. The same goes for mods interacting with other members.

Tokka-B
04-16-2003, 07:48 PM

DarthRaphael

I think you misunderstood me. I only said if a mod is enforcing the official rules is where you shouldn't argue. You can surely argue between which is more slippery - butter or margerine. :D For example, If I said that a post was racist because of an obvious slang word used, there would be no argument. Official Rule #2 "Attacking other members on the forums is not allowed."
