Some things that need stated.
FIRST OFF "THIS IS A MUTATION IN PROGRESS" MEANING THINGS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE!

Splinter is not young, he had a family and was human before mutation.
We only had been given a few tidbits about his past.
He had a daughter and Shredder thinks he's dead.
Shredder comes to NYC to destroy Splinter along with the Foot.

The 4 Turtles are all differnt heights and have pretty much the same attitudes from past incarnations.
Pizza is back.
Leonardo was pretty funny for once! (A good thing I think). He tries to be the leader but the other guys don't really follow him that well.
Raphaels sarcasm is back!
Donatello is a tall lanky junk yard parts inventor sort of like the old toon but updated.
Mikey is a silly, fun loving guy, who seems to have some a.d.d. problems. (Think Beast Boy from Teen Titans).

Shredder, from what We know he's going to give Freddy Krueger nightmares.
This guy's not a push over like the old toon one.
He's human as far as we know.
He wants Splinter dead as he thought he already killed him in the past.
Joins with the Krangs, trains them to be the new Foot Soldiers.

Foot Soldiers, they start off as human and later have a robotic army.
Not sure if the humans will stick around as Nick wants the turtles to be able to slice through them.

Baxter does not have a mutation outfit.
Donatello makes a ipod with the most storage space ever and Mikey grabs it and looses it in battle.
Baxter who has a robotic outfit to give him strength finds it after mikey drops it and plugs it in.
The ipod Don built has experimental goverment tech parts that Don found in a dump.
It joins with Baxters outfit and they become one character.
Not much of Baxter is explained but we do see he works at an office when he goes to get some payback.
He also shoots out Mousers from his outfit but they are not explained either.

The Krang are an evil alien race who have come to earth to take it over.
They mutate humans that they kidnap.
Shredder is training them to be the new foot, think robotic foot soldiers.
No word on a leader Krang, right now it sounds sort of like some hive mind race of aliens.

April is a young girl who is found by the 4 turtles when the Krang kidnap her and her family.
They are only able to save April, I'm going to asume the Krang either mutate or kill her parents.
But we will have to wait for the show to tell us that.
She's a flirt, skinny, redhead, doesn't really do anything besides bring the guys food and go to the movies from what we saw.
Donatello has a giant crush on her and I'm not sure if she really notices but she does sort of play into it and leads him on.
She got ticked when he didn't show up to go to the movies with her when the guys encounter Baxter.
Splinter trains April sort of like the Archie comics series, later down the line of show.

Casey Jones will not be in the first season and will be a bit older (18 i think they said) than the other characters (besides Splinter & Shredder).
We will see tags on walls in the city that say "Casey Jones" though.
Also if the love interest between Don & April is kept (please god why! no make it stop!) When Casey comes along it will cause tention because Casey will be the new human male interest for April and it will really tick Don off.

The Foot will be human at first and then from their it seems they want to go robotic so they can have the turtles slice em' and dice em'.

From what I gather we're getting a mix bag of things.
They want to not rush the stories of the characters and give us their pasts over the entire run of the show.
I for one think that is a great idea as we've always just been give it all in one lump.

You should be very excited!
This is a show for fans of all the TMNT worlds in my opinion.
I loved everything you said, Vaughn, except for the lack of Casey Jones for 26 episodes. Le sigh.
I know man, I wish he'd come in sooner also.
But at least we know he's gonna be there!
So is THE Krang in this? The leader?
Bebop and Rocksteady?
The Krang are not just one character, they are an entire race come to take over the Earth. Like the Utrom but evil.
Bebop & Rocksteady have not been shown or spoken of.
I wouldn't rule the idea out though as Mutation seems to play a big part in the new series.

I meant is there a leader who resembles Krang from the OT? This reminds me of the Krangezoids ep from the OT.

Also any other villains? Rat king,'Leatherhead?

TobTurn

Sounds VERY promising! Thanks for clearing the whole Baxter Stockman issue up!
Hmm.. The Krang as one race? Don't know if I like that. Do they look like Krang from the OT?
And Shredder is training The Krang to be Foot Ninja? I hope we don't see that soon enough. If The Shredder is to be human, I'd like to have him introduced as a normal crimelord without connections to "weird" things, except the turtles ofcourse. Kinda like in the '03 series, at first he seemed like a normal ninja crimelord, but that changed very drastically.

So how do the characters look in comparison to the previous incarnations? And any sign of Hun? There's been a rumor going around about him.

Roseangelo

It should be noted that nothing we saw at the event is actually official, and is still an "Mutation in Progress," as Nickelodeon calls it. :trazz:

We did not see one leader, there is just the entire race.
They got a mention when talking about the wraps on the turtles bodies but we didn't see them and they didn't talk about them being in the show.

No sign of Human or anyone from 2k3, yet.

Indeed, this alone gives me hopes that some things can be changed still.

Actually, this sounds more interesting than what I was expecting. April "orphaned" in the first episode could have some nice dramatic ramifications. On the other hand, the TMNT fighting to restore mutated humans could add a layer of drama to the show, ala Sonic the Hedgehog SatAm, especially if April's parents are among the mutants.

Can you say whether the mutation chamber destroys the subject's free will or just turns them into some bizarre creature?

We just saw the designs for the "Mutation Chamber".
But it seems that whatever the Krang put in with the being it will mix with it via the mutagen.
We also saw the new Layer! It's sooooooo beautiful!
Wait till you see the new playset Playmates is working on, it trumps anything they've ever done in the past.
Just tell me now. Was Mikey genuinely funny or still cowardly and annoying?
He was pretty funny but a bit on the dumb side.
Rose and I spoke up about it though and i'm sure others did as well.
So I hope they change it a bit, but he honestly isn't as bad as he was on the last show.
At least I don't think he was, but I hated 2k3 mikey.

Okay, apologies in advance for the stupid question, but now that we know that the pendulum has swung back to "Once Human" Splinter....what do his feet look like?

One of my favorite parts of Splinter's design were the more animalistic feet.

for example: this (http://www.freewebs.com/naruto-tmnt-fan/bow.jpg) vs this (http://www.videogamesblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/tmnt-smash-up-splinter-character-screenshot.jpg)

April is an orphaned teenager who is taken to the lair and taught to be a ninja by Master Splinter and then one of the boys has a crush on her? Sounds like they've been reading bad Mary Sue fanfiction.

I'm just not digging that idea at all.

Proper digging the idea of Splinter having a daughter. Can't help but think that she's been turned to 'the dark side,' for lack of a better term. Adopted and trained by the Shredder, like Karai in 2k3, she has no idea that her father is her greatest enemy. Of course, i'm probably waaay wrong, and she'll end up being a mutated female turtle or something :P But still, Splinter having a daughter is pretty damned awesome! Hope this is something they keep in...

And by the way, as the writer of April's Diary, I am lobbying Mindy for more cussing and nudity in following chapters. :)

You miss a lot being a day sleeper. Wow.

Ok, here's my $.02.

I have no problems with what I've heard so far.

6 foot once human Splinter...sounds kinda Archie to me.

Donnie being more tall and "goofy" make me think of him as kinda a gaucky teen nerd. Makes sense. As I've said before, I can see Donatello as taller and leaner than the rest, and a little awkward.

Teen April. Is that really such a big deal or is it the "why is she here" issue? I kinda dig it, and I also dig that Donnie has an obvious crush on her. As long as that's as far as it goes, I'm cool.

I do have one question: Is the IMDB for the series, totally off base?

No mention of aliens besides The Krang.
Okay, apologies in advance for the stupid question, but now that we know that the pendulum has swung back to "Once Human" Splinter....what do his feet look like?

One of my favorite parts of Splinter's design were the more animalistic feet.

for example: this (http://www.freewebs.com/naruto-tmnt-fan/bow.jpg) vs this (http://www.videogamesblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/tmnt-smash-up-splinter-character-screenshot.jpg)

So Krang and an Utrom slammed together....HARD.

I think that's the one down side I have is the Krang as a race and not a specific character. And having dozens of Krang style Foot seems odd to me too. But, we'll see how it goes.

Off to the salt mines.

You're invested. We get it. We're all invested. Do you think we'd all be here, on a turtle centric message board, picking nits out of the tiniest shreds of details if we weren't? Cripes, if you could see over your own butthurt you'd notice that we all share your concerns. We're just not all about shaking the gates of heaven when discussing them.

In the end: You got to go. A good lot of us didn't. You may not like the final product, but take some comfort in the fact that they thought highly enough of you to invite you in the first place. Sheesh.

We all got an e-mail today from Nickelodeon stating that we can freely talk about things now.

Hey, cool! Looks like I was right to expect a big reveal from fansites after the event, after all! :tgrin:

Also, I'm a bit suspicious of some changes like 16-year-old April and Splinter having a daughter, but all the other changes are cool with me. I hope Yoshi and Saki's battle where Yoshi is presumed dead (and just rolls with it) is super epic. It'll really set up how skilled Saki and Yoshi are and, in turn, will show how much room the Turtles have to grow before being to such a level.

I know none of this is completely set in stone, but I bet the basic ideas will remain the same throughout the whole creative process. Looks like it's really shaping up to be the oft-rumored Ultimate TMNT that some of us are looking for.

Also, with the big role of mutants in this series, it looks as if this is something we never would've seen with Pete in the picture. Looks like he was right to write himself out of the position of micro-manager.

Also, I'm really hoping that the inside of the TCRI building will be at least a little reminiscent of the inside of the Technodrome.

I'm done, just like the rest of my life I'm outnumbered. Oh, no! We don't have the same opinions on every interpretation of the Turtles!

Seriously, get over it. A lot of us don't share the same ideas as AndrewNDB, but that really doesn't change the fact that I think he's a cool guy who knows what he wants and enjoys it the best he can. You don't see him being so dramatic about people not sharing his opinion. He's as much of a fan as I am and we probably don't agree about a lot of things outside of Volumes 1 & 3, Bodycount, and Kevin Eastman's TMNT work in general.

Three two questions only..

1-Rose mentioned there was something everyone on her table had thumbs down on, what was that? Teen April?edit: Looked at another thread and this was answered so not a question for me anymore it was indeed teen april.

I love the idea of Teen April, I think there are a ton of ways to incorporate her into the show now which was kinda hard to do in 2k3 and as an adult in general besides the OT because she was a reporter. Now she's care free and can go on adventures.

2-Vaughn when you mention the Krangs do mutations is that all the info you got? Or did you get to see some of the mutations? Were they OT style mutant characters like humanoid or were they like say Bishops mutants in season 4 which were just "scary/creepy" version of animals? Also how do these mutants become robots exactly? Maybe you worded it funny but I didn't get that. edit: apparently the ones that become robot ninjas are the Kraangs right? ok. just need an answer on what the mutations the kraangs do look like.

So far I pretty much like everything I've read from Teen April to Don having a crush on her (its just a crush, the OT turtles all had a crush on her and I always felt 2k3 don may have had a crush on her). Splinters daughter is pretty cool as is the rest like no Casey in the beginning and slowly introducing the turtles world through out various episodes, we don't need to have everything done in the first season, as long as we get them I don't mind waiting.

3-How is the turtles lair? Is it a sewer? I have to admit I was not a fan of the 2k3 lairs besides the one in the first episode which was the sewers...

Only thing I have a problem with is The Krangs, I'd like it if one of them was named Krang and it was a species. I also hope this doesn't mean there are no Utroms in this universe... in fact I'd be fine with Krang being a leader of a ton of rebellious Utroms. Even if its not changed that is still far from a deal breaker, I haven't even seen it in action, I'm sure if we were told before 2k3 aired that Shredder was an evil Utrom we would ALL be upset. Oh Joe I'd love to hear any of the other things that bothered you that haven't been posted.

Kendamu
04-05-2011, 04:52 PM
I would venture a guess that the Kraang are a group of rogue Utroms on Earth doing bad things while, somewhere in the universe, the Utrom homeworld consists mainly of good Utroms.

sdp
04-05-2011, 04:59 PM
I like that idea, maybe the leader (or one) of the Kraangs can be called Ch'rell. I'd still like to actually have the one true "krang" with the other Kraangs though. Its unfair to make him a species, he's not a Pokemon.

Didn't Laird dislike Krang? He must be pissed at this. Then again didn't he dislike everything ;)

Thanks for the info thus far. What's troubling me the most is the lack of specific details concerning the individual Turtles characters. In specific, I'm most worried about Donny. Some stated he was "goofier". Vaughn (I think it was you, I apologize if it wasn't, so much going on today!), you said this wasn't the case --- could you clarify this or elaborate on it a little further? Donny's personality had to be a little different if it was brought up at all in the first place. I'm on the edge of my seat here, and this "goofy" adjective is bugging me.

Just my opinions here, but I'm *not* a fan of this anthropomorphic stale stereotype of depicting Donny as leaner, taller, and gaukier than the others. It's actually really lame, and the reason is simple: Nick is now feeding into the stereotype that "nerds" (and I use this term for lack of better words, for I am one :D) are those things by definition: skinny, gauky, and tall. Maybe those that referenced Don as "goofy" were referring to his gaukiness? Either way, "nerds" come in all shapes and sizes. There are studious students that are regular build and some that are heavy set, too. I just feel like segregating Donny as leaner and taller just because he is "the smart one" is really typical and lame.

I personally would have rather seen Donny with some goggles or glasses, much like the Future Don of Archie and the photo oldmanwinters linked to. I think that would have been cool. The same thing applies for glasses, though, just because you have glasses doesn't mean you're studious...it's just another stereotype. I just happen to prefer that one over making him stand out like Stinky on "Hey Arnold."

If it doesn't change, I'll get over it, as long as he's written well. Also, I think the April/Donny arc is cute and appropriate.

Could you guys and gals that know the info please let us know some more individual Turtle traits? Or did you just see enough to glean some quick assumptions on each Turtle? Regardless, please clear the Donny "goofy" mess up for me!

Thank you again!

I'm glad for the most part. But someone on this thread said "the silly ones are Leo and Mikey". Leo? Really? That got to be a joke. Please tell me I'm mistaken. Also, teen April is meh but acceptable I guess.

The most important thing for me regardless of everything we know so far is for the show to have a solid ninja/martial arts basis. The fundamentals of the fighting scenes are extremely important as far as I'm concerned. On par or even slightly more substantial than the personalities of the turtles.

All of this talk about the Krangs (ugh) being robotic foot soldiers sounds to me like the Turtles will be doing battle with alien-piloted Foot-mech suits (as the head) and when one of the guys slice through the suit we'll be treated to a little blob tumbling through the air.

Thank you, Machias, and thank you gobo, for addressing my concerned post. I feared that everybody skipped over it, and now my suspicions about Donny's height are calmed, for the time.

Still worried about the "goofiness," though. Can anybody shed more light on this? Did Joe just make it up?

I don't really like April studying to be a kunoichi, but that is me just being nitpicky. The things that have been said so far are good enough for me to go and watch the show and be entertained. Which is really my only priority in a tv show, to be entertained.

I'm ok with most of what's been said so far. Seems like the changes are being made with some kind of intention of building up a solid new universe. Actually, the third toe is probably what bothers me the most.

My thoughts exactly. After hearing the low down I still don't see why Joe was so bent out of shape. He complains about a tall physically imposing Splinter, but there's precedent in Archie. Teen April’s about the most “Really?” change. There is no precedent for it (though studying under Splinter is a very Archie touch, too) and it seems to be only done because she may be the character we (or rather the audience, since it’s meant for young tweens) relate to. Kinda hard to relate to mutants. April kinda had that aspect in the other media too, it just seems played to the Nth degree here.

I think Joe just has the same view as the turtles as Andrew, which is fine but they can't expect everyone to dislike it, I really don't dislike anything besides the Kraangs. Is the Kraangs something that any of you that went mentioned it'd be better to actually have one leader being the actual Krang? Thats the only thing that bothers me.
Anyways when I was watching The Next Mutation, Splinter always seemed odd to me since he seemed way too big, he was the same size as the turtles and always looked a bit odd. I don't mind him being taller though, not something I'll lose sleep over it.

Another question, how were the weapons handled? Mostly talking about Mikey/Don, did those blades come out all the time? How often did they use just regular bo/chuks? Did the blades seem gimmicky?

Donnie

Machias, any idea how old the Turtles are starting off in this series? I saw from your other thread you mentioned they might be around 13. If so, I can blame Donny's tall-ness to the fact that he grew a little faster than the others. I still don't like it, though. They should all be around the same size.

Donny's rail car project sounds very, very interesting!

Could you guys give us more info on the first wave of figures?

I thought the weapons were used well, agewise... they came across as 13 or 14, they're a little younger than Mirage #1 - Splinter seems very much protective of them and doesn't like them going to the surface...

As far as darkness, I think they might surprise us..

My general thoughts:

The young April thing does strike me as a little Mary Sue-esque. Or maybe it's a bit more of a calculated, "How do we reach out to young girls too?" based on, "Who seem to be the most devoted fans now after the original boom died down?" Largely, women now in their late 20s or 30s. I don't think making her younger adds anything to the character or her interactions with the TMNT beyond -- apparently -- some kind of idea of making her a quasi love interest (which is pretty horrible) for the Turtles themselves. The thought of them considering her as a way of introducing a Twilight angle, with April instead of Bella and a mutant turtle(s) instead of a vampire is pretty sickening, if that's at all the thought process behind it (and I'm not saying that it is, I'm just throwing that out there).

Making Splinter bigger doesn't bother me but the reasoning they gave ("to make him more of a match for Shredder," yes?) is pretty dodgy at best. Perhaps it's more with their apparent commitment to making the Turtles appear even younger and smaller than ever before in any incarnation ever (which is weird) they feel the need to have someone amongst them be a little larger? I dunno, just seems needless. And why all the worry about Splinter going toe-to-toe with Shredder? I realize this is a new universe, but his whole thing is supposed to be raising the Turtles as his instruments to send against Shredder... he's backstage management.

"The Krangs"? Just lame all around. I'm imagining like a round-table discussion with guys piping up with, "Utroms? Why call them that? They all look like Krang anyway, let's just go with 'The Krangs.'" A renegade Utrom named Krang wreaking havoc on Earth isn't a bad idea or angle for a kids' show, but this name thing is just plain silly. I never read it, but it sounds a little bit like the Ultimates version of Galactus where Galactus isn't a single being, but a cosmic swarm of beings called, "Gal-Lac-Tus" or something... not a bad idea in concept, but doesn't seem needed and I don't reckon it adds much to the mix beyond some kind of hope of nostalgia placation for really old fans wanting Krang back without actually doing Krang again (I think it will just end up having the opposite-than-desired effect).

So yeah, I have no idea what to expect from here. I'm disappointed at what I'm hearing (mainly because it sounds like this may end up setting the clock back on mainstream ever taking the TMNT seriously, now in a whole new generation) but none of this truly bothers me because I wholly understand that this cartoon isn't for me -- it's for kids. A new generation of little kids. From that perspective, while at the same time it seems poised, ready to take a crap on many of the aspects I thought were gradually evolving in TMNT in the mass media... I think it sounds like a show for little kids that may actually have a little bit of teeth (if not moreso than the 4Kids show, which I also didn't like, then at least the original cartoon) that will serve to induct them into the TMNT fandom. With IDW getting ready to mass-publish a ton of the Mirage material, perhaps these new fans will stumble across that and get a better sense of the TMNT's potential.

Or maybe not. But at least it'll increase awareness.

One thing I keep reading around these parts that I take a little issue with is, "What did you guys want? Just a rehash of the Fred Wolf cartoon, or the 4Kids cartoon? They're doing something NEW with the TMNT, a new take! Don't you want something new?"

My answer: I don't care what take the latest children's cartoon takes and neither should you, fellow Mr./Ms./Mrs. 20/30 year-old old-school TMNT fan... because at the end of the day, this cartoon is not for me and it's not for you. While I make no bones about my not being able to stand watching the original cartoon now beyond small doses spread out over years (and to be fair I find the 4Kids cartoon only slightly more palatable), I was fully braced with teeth clenched for it to be announced that this cartoon would be a loose continuation/soft reboot of all of that old cartoon continuity with Turtle Blimps, Technodrome, lame jokes and all and was mostly OK with that -- after all, why not?

I'm hoping that maybe the new movie might take things in a direction where the TMNT can be taken somewhat seriously while the cartoon is strictly aimed at little kids. Then, for those of us who like comics, there's IDW's awesome platform they're setting up. It'd end up similar to any other big name comic that has a movie and a kids' cartoon.

"Don has a crush on April." Twilight isn't the best thing to categorize the two.

As far as I read, Don will just have some small crush kind of like the 2k3. Except April plays it on a little. Nothing really to get into. Most likely will die off when Casey comes into play.

Newton Gimmick

I don't really have a problem with April being a bit younger (did she look like the horrible WB April? Cause that April looked 12) and I have even of a lesser problem with the Turtles crushing on April. The Turtles live in the real world and are exposed to nothing but human images. If they came in contact with a hot chick, it's really not out of the norm for them to be attracted to her. I dunno how far you can let that go, mind you, but I don't immediately think it's a rotten concept just because weirdo fans have wrote stories of sex with the Turtles. Honestly, it seems only natural that there woud be some minor attaction.

I'm indifferent on the Krangs thing, need to see more I guess. I'm okay with the concept to make a bunch more mutants.

The Splinter stuff? I'm not sure on. I've always thought the Mirage story for Splinter was signifigantly WORSE than the Fred Wolf story. Rat learning kung-fu always bothered me, but I guess I'd need to see how it plays out. Him having a daughter? How that plays out will have a huge effect on this whole thing. The Turtles really are his sons, so adding another girl to the mix just seems, hmm, odd to me.

Now my one question...

Did anyone see any Foot Ninja/Foot Soldiers? I've heard a lot of talk about them, but no mention of what they look like. Were any actually shown? If so, what did they look like?

I never thought about the 5 "sibling" aspect of Hamato Yoshi having a daughter before becoming Splinter and raising 4 sons. I really wonder how much older than the Turtles Hamato Jane will be. I do think it’d be an interesting dichotomy: (If) Shredder raised Yoshi's daughter and now she's his enemy and the Turtles might just be again tied to Shredder again (via the mutagen) and they are his enemy....trippy.

Correct. Every time someone uses "evolve" in place of "mutate" Darwin kicks a kitten. Evolution =/= Advancement.

Maybe I'm the only one who grew up with "The Rats of NIHM," but I see no problem what so ever with animals achieving a human level of intelligence and cognition due to SCIENCE! and teching the tech.

I can buy the alien radioactive waste giving "simple" creatures advancements beyond others of their species. Having it turn a person into an animal was always an illogical stretch for me for some reason.

Every time someone uses "evolve" in place of "mutate" Darwin kicks a kitten. Evolution =/= Advancement. .

I was going by what Andrew said, since I haven't read the comics and I don't know crap about how it all worked.

I can see what you are talking about though. Thinking about it all like Secret of NIHM makes a little more sense, I don't know how speech would work though. I haven't watched Secret of NIHM in years, but didn't scientists work on the rats, and they had years with their more advance knowledge before becoming intellectuals?

Honestly I have no problem with any of what was shown besides The Kraang, but that can easily be fixed by just calling them rogue Utroms and Krang (or Ch'rell) as the leader. I think people are indeed nerdraging over all the little details.

Questions I still have unanswered:
What are the mutants that The Kraang are making like? humanoid mutants like the OT or just "creepy" versions of what they mutated like S4 of 2k3?
Is the turtles lair a sewer?
What is the color of Splinters fur?
did you guys that went complain about The Kraangs?
So shredder is badass looking, but he's not over the top "you can't even see him" like 2k3 shredder right? He looks human right and not just armor?
Did Playmates show an April figure?

You will have to excuse me as I have gotten a bit confused. Is it confirmed that Splinter's daughter will be showing up as part of the cast of the show or is everyone just taking a guess at what her identity will be?

I personally would prefer her to be a new original character, because I would like to for once see Karai be closer to her Mirage self.

Yeah, I prefer they call them Utrom. And if the real Krang shows up, he is Krang.

Otherwise its pointless. A bunch of random blobs working for Shredder? That's still not THE Krang, and thus its not like they're using his character.

I'm also utterly shocked that Nick made no mention of Bebop/Rocksteady so far. You'd think they'd be some of the first villains confirmed.

My suggestions:

- Age April to 18 at least. Don't make her look anorexic. Give her boobs if you have to.

- Don't call them Kraangs. Call them Utroms and have Krang show up as their leader.

- Have human and robot Foot Soldiers co-exist. Shredder should not give up his human ninja.

- Have Baxter a better backstory than just getting fired from a job.

Much of this news makes me less excited about this new show. The Kraang, I agree with the few other opinions that it would be better if it were a rouge group/gang of Utroms perhaps called Kraang. I would rather have the Triceratons to be honest but I am sure we will likely see them at some point anyway.

April being younger doesn't really serve a point, April in previous incarnations has been 22-23 years old or so. 27 maybe in the OT? It does kind of sound like its going to be like a Ultimate TMNT I didn't mind Ultimate Spider-Man but haven't followed it much beyond issue #100.

I will also just mention that I have never really got the feel that the TMNT were teenagers, for the most part they seem like adults. Which I guess teenagers are young adults other than acting goofy or Splinter not wanting them to venture to the surface I have never really got the feeling they were teenagers. I'd say as they are older they generally act very much the same say as in Vol 4 and prior. I guess that was one thing in the OT having Pizza and Mikey using the surfer lingo was perhaps gearing them to be more teenage.

Don having a crush on April I could do without. There is an episode on the Worlds Collide dvd where April was so impressed or happy with Don she says something to the effect "I could kiss you" Don seemed to blush or be happy and say "oh really". While cute I don't think I'd like to see anything go much further than that.

I'd like to see Casey in the first season. Robot foot soldiers I could deal with, Kraang foot soldiers what would be better is if they were Utroms in exoskellitons perhaps with a pact with shredder could be alright and show where he is getting technology for robotic foot ninja I guess... Still not a fan of the premise.

The mutating people I don't care for, it seems that it will bring in lots of different mutants and could be a gimmick to make more toys to sell(?). I"d like it to be distanced from the OT and it reminds me of that.

Splinter being human, I am not a fan of nor am I a fan of him being 6 feet tall. Splinter having a daughter (Karai) with Tang Shen could have interesting stories or plot twists I suppose.

This series is seeming alike it could be a little annoying with little things that could bother me. I have enjoyed all incarnations of the TMNT minus TNM and I haven't read the Archie comics. I'd prefer it to stay away from the OT, which I am glad its not seeming to be really close to but some of these things put a damper on where I was hoping to see this show go.

After reading http://ninja-pizza.blogspot.com/ write up I feel a little more optimistic, tho somethings I am still not a fan of. I'll wait to see it for final judgment there may be a couple cool things brewing in there.

One thing that has always bugged me about the turtle shows (especially 2K3) is that they never really come off like teenagers.

They should all be around the same size.

It's a neat throwback and I'm glad the characters are there. It's like "Thanagarian Snare Beast" instead of "Giant Spider" (Kevin Smith, anyone?). However, throwing the word "Utrom" in there somewhere would also be cool as a throwback to what they're actually called.

Yeah, two 'a's. Probably a writer's way of making it seem more alien. I'll admit it bugged me (a little) at first, but now I kinda dig the throwback. I think it's a great way to stay true to the characters while still acknowledging the other incarnation.

It's a great way to acknowledge the Fred Wolf incarnation... but why is that acknowledgement necessary?

One thing that has always bugged me about the turtle shows (especially 2K3) is that they never really come off like teenagers. In this current incarnation, they really feel like teenagers.

Based on what sliding scale? Referencing/spouting out enough topical pop culture references? Rebelling against "dad," maybe?

They're supposed to be ninja freaks (to mankind, anyway) trained in a sewer to kill a guy by their master. What age they happen to be is incidental. What human-relateable teenagerisms would be pretty sparing.

Disclaimer: I understand this is a new universe divorced from the source material and I understand the target audience.

Dispite the fact that you loathe the Fred Wolf series, it's what MOST people think of when they hear Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

If by "most people" you mean people well, well outside of the target demographic of a show like this, then you're correct.

I just see little benefit in reinforcing a name already rooted in fallacy by amping up the fallacy factor (as if it wasn't enough that the Fred Wolf cartoon made folks confuse/cross-pollinate Krang with the Utroms, now a whole new generation of people will come up thinking of the whole Utrom race as "Krangs").

A Brainiac-like Utrom named Krang with the toothlessness of the Fred Wolf cartoon stripped away that comes to Earth to wreak hell? That would be a perfectly equitable way to throw a bone to the Krang of yore while still keeping things roots-wise fairly copasetic. A gang of brain-like beings called "Krangs"/"The Krange"/whatever that aren't Utroms? Not so much.

Just saying.

Jester
04-06-2011, 12:40 AM
I don't disagree there. I'd much prefer a rogue Utrom named Krang.

And even if "most people" are out of the age demo for the show....some of them have kids who are. And most good animated series are written in levels anyway. There is the basic level for the target demo, but there are in-jokes and more for lack of a better term "adult" gags for us. Like (and this is a terrible parallel): Animaniacs.

In which way do you mean this, Toon? Obviously, you know much more about the show then I do, but given details like Splinter being human, and Shredder having a Mutant making machine, one could say there is quite a bit of Fred Wolf influence. Where do you see the Mirage influence taking place?

I am digging all that I have read thus far here at the drome and on the different blogs.

I like that the turtles really come off as teenagers. (different heights, different builds, crushes/hormones, etc.)

I like the change in Splinter. (It sounds like a total revamp of the character and I like the idea of the strong, over powering father figure who can lead the boys in battle while protecting them from harm if need be.)

The Kraang are cool. I hope these are rogue Utroms and thus require a name change. However, if all Utrom like characters in the show just go by the name The Kraang it will be a cool throw back name change while keeping the same basic character design of old.

April as a teenager is a unique twist. I think she will be the turtles way of having contact with/ living a "normal" teenage life.

Stockman to me sounds like the 2k3 Stockman which doesnt bring anything new to the table but why fix something that isnt broken.

I havent read much on Shredder (unless I am missing it somewhere) other than it sounds like he is a badass.

Overall this show sounds like it is shaping up to be something different, but familiar with new twists and turns to satisfy a broad range of fans. I think if Nick continues to poor the same effort into the show that they have thus far, it is going amazing.

I definitely agree here. While I am going to wait and see what happens, I do have a gripe about April being a teenager. I think it is a way to appeal to girls, but I agree that girls can relate to grown women as well. Look at April in other incarnations and tell me that girls didn't like her.

I don't think it's bad that fans are giving their opinions now because this is the time to do it, especially since we have some staff who are present on these boards. But I'm still going to wait and see. This is all a work in progress as of now, and things can change. Maybe April will become a woman instead of a teenager. D'oh! :P

Toon, my issue with the height differences isn't so much that it's unrealistic, rather that it's generic, typical, and feeding into stereotypes. Donny's the tallest, because people associate being smart or dorky with tall gaukiness for some reason, when this is just a stale stereotype. Go figure Mikey's the shortest, because he's the "youngest" and probably eats the most, and is the laziest, therefore giving more life into that stereotype: the younger, lazy, shorter, video game brother. It's just predictable. I've never seen an incarnation where Leonardo is the tallest, or Raphael the shortest, etc.

Jester, I eagerly await PL's thoughts!

I actually haven't seen either BTTS or FF sadly, but it seems the majority here regard it as sub-par to the regular 2k3 run.

Come to think of it, there was a *slight* height difference even in Mirage's TMNT V.1 #2, if anybody caught that...Donny and Raph seem to be the tallest and Leo is definitely the shortest. But this didn't last, and they all pretty much retained the same height throughout Mirage, if memory serves me correctly...

But like I said, it's not the height difference that really bothers me, it's who they give the height difference to, because it feeds into nonsense stereotypes. I know I'm looking too deep into this, and it's not a deal breaker for me, it's just annoying, and I'm an uber-fan boy-geek.

This is one of those speculation things that Rose is worried someone's going to make and someone else is going to take as gospel truth, but I'm going to toss it into the wind anyways....with apologies in advance.

I don't see why there can't be BOTH Utroms and Kraang. Think Vulcans and Romulans. With the latter being the "evil" version of the former.

DonnyTMNT, methinks the geek doth protest too much. First, Mikey being the shortest is movie canon. So keeping him small could just be a throw back to that.

If you're looking for a place where Raph is the shortest, a la Wolverine, then look no further than the TMNT RPG. Raph's stats there list him as being smaller than everyone else...save Splinter.

I don't think "tall" automatically equates with "geeky", I think tall equates with being a teenager who hasn't filled out yet after a growth spurt.

But I get how this is a sensitive issue for you. Seriously, it's something I empathize with rather strongly. Imagine being a chick growing up in the 80s and not liking pastel colors, or identifying with female characters who are known for their boobs or needing constant rescue.

Nah, we've just seen it before:

I don't see why there can't be BOTH Utroms and Kraang. Think Vulcans and Romulans. With the latter being the "evil" version of the former.
You and me both:
Yep, the only thing that still sticks in my craw right now is "The Kraang." I'm still holding out for this to be a rogue group of Utroms. I'm hoping the Vulcan/Romulan idea I had eariler comes to light...but who knows. If they were evil Utes with a leader named Krang (or even Kraang) I'd be happier than the whole Utrom race being evil and named the Kraangs.
Is it odd that I just had a Vulcan/Romulan thought regarding the Kraang (ugh!) and the Utroms?

This is one of those speculation things that Rose is worried someone's going to make and someone else is going to take as gospel truth, but I'm going to toss it into the wind anyways....with apologies in advance.

I think as long as everyone understands that what is in the first post of this thread is fact (confirmed by Nick, or the TMNT newsies who went to the fan event Roseangelo, Vaughn Michael, JoeGro, Machias, Archon...)... everything else is either wishful thinking or just speculation...

 I like your style, plastron! Fair point about Mikey from the movies, that totally slipped my mind...and glad to know at least you don't associate tall/gauky with geeky. Annnd at least you understand where I'm coming from. :)

I think I'm just going to keep in mind, if Nick is making them this young in age, their heights will fluctuate eventually as they grow (of course, if Nick sticks around with the show that long) and I'll just pretend they weren't trying to make Donny appear "smarter." (If they were going that angle, like I said somewhere earlier, I would have liked him to have goggles or glasses of sorts, although that doesn't really bode well with my argument in the first place...:P)

Haven't been versed in the TMNT RPG's...what doth you speaketh of?

so I wonder if Casey Jones will end up with new weapons or at least new variations of his weapons.

His hockey sticks and baseball bats were on par with a bo staff and nunchuks , but i think he'd be a step behind all bladed weapons

They were released in the late 80's they were used for TMNT table top gaming.
According to the book:
Raph is 4' 6" 150 lbs Leo is 4' 9" 150 lbs Don is 5' even 155 lbs and Mikey is 4' 8" 150 lbs.

I'm kind of hoping that by making the turtles different sizes there's a greater chance we'll see them without their masks on. Which...is one of my personal fanboy squee-points. Truthfully I doubt it, but it's nice to dream.

And while I'm dreaming, I'll add a bit about a future episode where they're all much more similar in size, because they've evened out. Shadow will be there too.

Can I interest anyone in a pony while I'm at it?

You and me both:

D'OH! *facepalm* I totally didn't see those!

DonnyTMNT, you might find this interesting:
Donatello is more interested in working out a troublesome computer program than fighting ninjas and robot mousers or whatever. Of all the Turtles, he rebels most strongly against killing. In a strange way, he is a pacifist ninja, and while his skill with a staff are highly honed, he would prefer not to use it against a living opponent.
Donatello gets off on gadgets and technology(Man…he really does do machines.-Jester) and many times he will sneak out at night and, using his ninja skills of silence and stealth, rummages through the dumpsters of electronics firms, gathering cast-off parts with which to construct his various devices. Although he lacks formal training, he is a natural inventive genius.
Donatello cares a great deal for his brother Turtles, but is the least clannish of them. He lives most of the time within his own head, thinking and dreaming of new things to build.
So yeah...Don's a "pacifist ninja." Interesting oxymoron, but you know.

Heck yes he is. I knew more evidence than what I've already cited would come to my defense in that argument. Thanks, Jester. By the way, I liked your little commentary in there!

Here is what the book says about the others:
Leonardo:
In the absence of Splinter, Leonardo is the leader of the turtles. He is a "take-charge" kind of guy who can size up a situation quickly. He excels at making plans that are complicated yet cleanly constructed, and most always work.
He is also a perfectionist; a trait that gets him into trouble. Leonardo performs his tasks with an efficiency that any man or turtle would be proud of, but there are times that he sees it as a source of shame and a "loss of face." He is always trying to live up to the ideal of his mentor, Splinter. Unfortunately, he has never really absorbed one of Splinter's most important teachings: that it is honorable to strive for perfection, but alright to ccasionally fail to reach that goal.
Leonardo also feels this loss of face when the other turtles do something wrong. He feels responsible for them and their actions. Of course, because of this, he goes nuts over Raphael's rages and craziness.
Leonardo is perhaps the smartest of the turtles, at least in all-around intelligence. He is a voracious reader, and has a very good memory. His favored weapon is the sword, though he is skilled with all weapons and techniques.

Raphael:
Raphael has some kind of minor insanity that makes him the "crazy" man of the group. He has problems being controlled and cannot even control himself. When agitated, he has a 75% chance of going into a "berserker" rage. It takes several melee rounds for him to recover himself. He's fine most of the time, but when he gets into a berserker rage, watch out! This makes him an awesome fighter, but also a little hard to live with.
He doesn't like this side of himself, but he can't yet control it. It is like a demon living inside him, barely kept in check. A large part of why Raphael hasn't yet killed himself, or any of the other turtles is due to his friendship with Michaelangelo. Michaelangelo is also
Raphael's main sparring partner. It is Michaelangelo's great love of life and fun that acts as a balance for Raphael's anger and depressions.
Raphael wants to make himself a better warrior. He practices alot, but he can't seem to keep from doing dangerous or foolhardy stunts. Though skilled in all ninjitsu techniques, his favorite weapon is the sai. He uses the Paired Sai in Leap Attacks as a master of Ninjitsu. As a fighter, Raphael is neither the most skillful (Leonardo is better) or the most talented (Michaelangelo is phenomenal), but he is the most deadly Ninja Turtle because of his raw energy.

Michelangelo:
Michaelangelo is the fun-loving turtle. He lives to enjoy life. He tends to hang out with Raphael rather than Leonardo or Donatello because they're too serious for him. He has a gentle, though mischievous nature and is not above playing practical jokes.
He reads comic books and science fiction and likes to sneak into movie theaters when they are playing double bills of "ET" and "Robin Hood." Michaelangelo would also be the Ninja Turtle most likely to play in a role-playing game. In short, he enjoys practicing his Ninja skills, but also enjoys just fooling around.
Michaelangelo also like to cook and it is he who prepares most of the turtles' meals. In many ways he is the hedonist and a sensualist, appreciative of pleasures of the flesh.
Michaelangelo likes rough and tumble stuff and gets into a good fight almost as much as Raphael. He enjoys sparring, and he and Raphael do a lot of this. He doesn't work as hard at the art of Ninjitsu as any of the others (except perhaps Donatello), but his naturally high Physical Prowess more than makes up for his lack of discipline. Michaelangelo is adept at all ninjitsu skills, but favors a pair on nunchaku

Here is my proposed idea for the aliens:

- They are Utroms who have betrayed their homeland and sided with Krang, the evil brain from Dimension X.

- Later on in the series, the "good" Utroms come to Earth, see their traitor counterparts who are working for Krang and/or Shredder, and a war ensues.

- This will later lead in to the introduction of the Triceratons and Fugitoid, where they fight over him and his teleportal device.

Because the way it is now, we're not really getting Krang in this new series. Its just a bunch of Utroms slightly redesigned. If you're going to use his name, people will want to see the REAL Krang.

Why can't there be a leader Krang who walks around in an Android Body similar to that of the OT? He can lead the evil Utroms.

Someone please pass this info along to Nick before it is too late.

All of the info in the very first post has been confirmed by either Nickelodeon or by the forum members who have attended the Nickelodeon TMNT Fan Event earlier this month... Only the info in the first post is confirmed info... Note that it is still subject to change, what is posted is what is happening now... They're talking a lot about "Mutation in Progress", but every. single. time. stuff like this comes up, nothing actually changes. I'd love to be wrong, but I 100% expect to see all of this be completely in place when the show airs. Especially if they already have some toy prototypes out.

Is it just me or do the fights in the show seem slapstick?

In her write-up, she says Leo throws a beehive into Baxter suit and he gets stung by angry Bees. I can just imagine a CG Baxter screaming with his eyes bulging and these "big" bees stinging him over and over.

Honestly, seems like something the old show would have done. Also does this Baxter have any motive? He seems one dimensional.

The idea that Baxter's own robot suit can't break into the building without the help of Don's AI chip that he found also sounds ridiculous. This is Baxter Stockman, he is a genius and he should be able to do this himself.

Also the way the Turtles, "beat him up" in his first appearance makes him immediately sound like a push over.

I really hope this isn't a sign of the fights to come.

Overall the pilot was very enjoyable and my write-up really does it a disservice. There was nothing slap-stick about anything. I would not make any judgments based on it; it's simply there to give you an idea of what it was.

"The Turtles return to their Lair and a very suspicious Splinter."

Seems like it should say something after that... Or maybe I'm reading it wrong...
