Loosely reading around the threads/posts, along with words directly from the chosen ones (fan preview event), Miss 2012 April O'Neil will, at the moment anyways ("mutation IN PROGRESS"!), be a 16 year-old girl. "typilcal" and "rebel"are the two words I'm hearing. Those words belonging to the April they saw in the pilot animatic.

I see the 16 yearold April as a fantastic oppurtunity. Make her ambitious and always wanting to be part of the action, like the '80s cartoon April. I can see her having an interest for objects and oddities of year's past, like the antique shop-ownin' April of 2003 series/mirage comics. And maybe her and Donnie boy can strike up a beautiful friendship, which will begin exposing her to a hidden love she'd thought she'd never be into- SCIENCE!

All the while being trained to become a ninja by Master Splinter himself!

In short- the ultimate April.

Dromers, which do you prefer?

The bland, typical teen April, or the ambitious, science-loving, antique enthusiast teen April?

thoughts?

I wouldn't go so far as to say the ULTIMATE April, but if she can be like this:

the ambitious, science-loving, antique enthusiast teen April?

She at least will be an interesting and likable character.

I Agree, I won't say this could be the ultimate April, but definately could be my favorite incarnation of her. Everybody ask why would she hang around Turtles, but truth be told, she is probably a social outcast in school and probable relates to them.

People said she looks much younger than 16, like she's about 12. Meh.

They should at least design her to look like a teenager, not a flat-chested 12 year old.

jeeze is everything creepy now? Hey we're on a franchise forum aimed at kids, thats creepy as well right?

Anyways I too think a younger April is full of possibilities and yeah she can have the same traits April is known for, no reason why she can't be interested in science and technology, heck she can even join the HS Newspaper. I think 2k3 April was a bit lacking and she wasn't that important either most of the times, so this new take definitely has potential to have her more with the turtles.

I do hope she doesn't look too young though since it would border Zack the Fifth turtle territory. A teenager can actually be competent a kid? not so much, so I hope she is a teen and not a pre-teen.

I like the idea of a teen April. She will prob get herself into a lot more trouble than the OT April.

sdp
04-07-2011, 08:19 PM
We live in different times than when the OT came out, April was written that way of always getting into trouble because that was how a lot of shows worked back then, not necessarily like that anymore, shows are much better written so I doubt they'll use that plot more than a few times, certainly not every other episode like the OT did. You don't see Superman saving Lois all the time in recent shows anymore, sure it may happen but its not like it was before where that is all Superman was known for.

I don't agree completely. In 2k3 she was very important up into season 4 or so. S1-3 she was vital. She did house them, hack the foot building, gave them info when needed. helped them on multiple mission. But S5-S7 she was completely useless and was detatched from the turtles.

I like the fact that she's gonna be a teenager. Like Plastroncafe said, it's kinda weird for a full grown adult woman to constantly hang out with teenagers (mutant or not).

I don't know if I completely agree with this. April kind of becomes a surrogate mother to the guys so I don't really find it that odd she spends time with them. I mean usually she isn't just hanging out with them, they come to her when they need things like a place to stay or someone to get them groceries.

Or I thought it was kind of adorable in the Turtle Titian episode when all his brothers are picking on him Mike turns to April to tell about his dreams and much like a Mom or even older Sister she helps him out to achieve them.

Which later in the comic series considering April can't have her own kids I think her relationship with both Shadow and the guys becomes even more special.

Well it's not portrayed as weird, but when you really think about it, it is.

Also, her age will allow for some interesting character development. I doubt this show will have a tight time-line like a Greg Weisman show (Young Justice, Spectacular Spider-man) but if it lasts long enough we could definitely see April age from season to season.

Well it's not portrayed as weird, but when you really think about it, it is.

I have to respectfully disagree.

I have steadily been defending April's transition to a teen in the new series but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth if we suddenly start saying it's better because the family April built with all the characters in pretty much every previous version of the franchise is "creepy".

The guys rescue April and she helps them defeat Baxter Stockman, they then lose their Father (who is pretty much the center of there sheltered world) and the only other being they can turn to is April. She takes them in and gives them a place to stay, feeds them and takes care of them much like a Mom would.

April is estranged or apart from most of her family, the guys don't have that much family so they all take care of each other. One of my absolute favorite parts of the City At War comics is the last issue when April is sad that Splinter left without saying goodbye and talking to the woods tells him about how her Father passed but in the last few years she felt like she has had a second Father. And Splinter walks out and hugs her and calls her daughter.

Is that weird too??

I am baffled :tconfuse:

I just hope they don't treat April like the 5th turtle. The fact that she's apparently training in martial arts as early as the first season for goodness sakes pretty much eludes to that.

I've always seen April as an older sister to the Turtles, because she's always been older than them. I guess her being around their age will take some getting used to.

sdp
04-07-2011, 09:38 PM
I've always seen April as the turtles peer and around the same age, not as a parental figure. Even though they are the TeenageMNT I always saw them as a bit older like say 18-22 because of how they acted which is also the age I saw April as. So if the turtles are going to actually act like teenagers it makes sense to me that April will too, I have never seen April as a babysitter and thats how I would feel if she felt much older than the turtles.

CyberCubed
04-07-2011, 09:59 PM
This makes me think we're going to have scenes of April sneaking out of her parents house at night to meet the Turtles. I know they said April's parents were minor throw-away characters, but I'm guessing we'll still see them at some point.

Spitfire
04-07-2011, 10:50 PM
I think she's going to be their age so there can be teenage drama between them. Then I'm sure they will throw in stuff about her always being late to class and smelling funny because of the turtles. I'm sure she will get grounded at some point and be unable to help them, probably grounded because she helped them some other time. She will probably have no friends or like one weird friend who she starts to ignore because of the turtles. I foresee predictable plot points. Making her the proper age would eliminate that completely. I see why they're doing it I just don't care for them too.

As long as Don doesn't find a way to make the Krang holo disguise things work for the turtles and they start attending high school or something I'll be fine. If they do that I think I'll have to give up completely.

Tinuvielsdreams
04-07-2011, 10:55 PM
That and they are doing it to create a more "relatable" April for the goal demographic. I am thinking a girl 8-12-ish would be more interested in seeing a teenage heroin then an adult heroin no matter how silly and sewer smelly she may be

Koi

Maybe it is just me, but as a 8-12 your old girl. I'd prob wouldn't give a crap about April or if she was relateable. I would watch it for mutant turtles.

Spitfire
04-07-2011, 11:03 PM
They wouldn't be doing it if they weren't trying to reel in more girl viewers. I'm sure they want April to seem less like the Turtles Mom and more like their friend. Kids in general will relate better to other kids/teenagers then adults.

I fully agree. I know I'm going to sound like a broken record, but teen April doesn't seem like a good idea. No reason for it. I would rather see April as surrogate mother than as a teenager. The interactions she could have with Splinter alone, as two adults discussing and observing the turtles could make for very interesting plot points....

If they want to bring in younger girl viewers, why not make a new character? Why the heck does the established character of April need to be messed with? It's a new universe, so create a new character...nobody will mind and you aren't messing with Canon.

And I thought the target demo was young boys..?

They will target both genders, it only makes sense in the world of television and merchandising.
Also, as I am a girl who ran around in TMNT hay-day I played with boys pretending to be one of the turtles. I never cared about being April. I do however remember other girls wanting to be included in playing but didn't want to be a turtle.
They know exactly what they are doing

The only (smart, rational, good?) reason to make such a drastic change to April is to target li' girls.

Well I can see the need to counterbalance the teenie bopper shows. I am actually looking at the Nick website now.

I am sure that boys are the main target but if they can pull in both they will.

Honestly, there has been a thing or maybe a long term trend with turning characters into teenagers among many superhero shows.

I'm slightly bothered by teen April, but if they make her intelligent and mature, I think it could work. I just like seeing April be an older sister to the guys. Yes, she can still do that here, but it'll be hard for her to counterbalance being friends with the guys to being in high school. But if this is the way they're going to go, I guess I'll just have to deal with it. I'll give it a chance and see where this goes. They may do something where April is being bullied and feels like an outcast. Then she meets the Turtles, who are outcasts, and feels she isn't alone.

I want to state again that I have no de facto problems with a teenage April, assuming she's done well.

But personally, I was hoping to see something more like this interpretation, which I think would be ideal:

But... maybe such a possibility isn't out of the question yet. A lot can happen between now and Fall 2012. A lot can happen over 26 episodes. And a lot can happen over a few seasons worth of episodes, assuming the show has some longevity.

A lot of words could of been saved if this image had been placed up sooner.

Although now that my mind is in a better understanding of the anti-2012 April group (or, at least the ones who are slightly displeased about it), I'll still have to say, teen April remains a fun thought.

Just as fun as pizza-eating and joke crackin', like the '80s toon, despite it not being fully accurate of the source material.

Ignoring my interest in the teen April idea, I do look forward to the possibility of grown-up April in the 2013 movie, if they continue with the mirage direction.

As one of the people that wrote a lot of those words about April I just want to say I personally don't have any ill feelings against teen April. At least not until I see how she is written and performed and what type of character she is.

My issue was the fact some people where trying to defend her by making it look like the long established motherly relationship April has had with the guys was creepy/weird or twisted and that made me sad :tsad:

I doubt that they will design April to look younger than a teen simply because we've all read that the show is set to be targeted to the teen market (PG+ and all that).

After all the show is called TEENAGE mutant Ninja Turtles and we know that Don is going to have a crush on her. Can't see the show lasting long if the tallest Turtle has a thing for a 12 year old.

EDIT: In response to Teen April, I originally didn't like the idea because it seems like a sad way to get to the demographic (like how Lucas included a 10 year old Anakin in Star Wars Episode 1, thinking that kids could only relate to other kids) but more that I think about it, the more I like it. It makes sense that the TMNT and April are the same age to me. It's going to fun having them grow up together (by that I mean developing as characters, seeing that I doubt the characters will actually get older as the show progresses... though that would also be cool in my opinion).

I always liked the dynamic between Bulma & Son Goku in the original Dragonball series. Goku was the diminutive, naive little warrior while Bulma was the slightly older yet very-immature peer who essentially dragged him out of the wild and introduced him to human civilization. I think that type of dynamic would be pretty cool for April & the TMNT.

I'm still baffled as to why anyone would be upset that others are concerned about significant changes to core characters in the franchise. While there have been changes through the years in every incarnation of the TMNT, pretty much a whole host of things have remained consistent. The Turtles having two toes and April being a slightly older female figure, are both items that fall into those categories.

When Nick comes along and we learn that the TMNT may or may not (sounds like may) have extra random toes and that April is now the same age as the Turtles (or possibly younger?) it's something any fan should be cautious of. I hesitate to use the ideology of "real fans", but I do find it hard to believe that anyone who is even a remotely dedicated Turtles fan, wouldn't find some concern in these changes. I don't think you should be "outraged" either, but everyone should have some questions as to why these changes are taking place. I remain cautiously optimistic, yet, many of this forum have chastised us for feeling that way. I find that most mysterious.

And yet, on the flip side, here's a thread dedicated to explaining to us how the new April will either be boring and typical or the "ultimate" version of the character. Without a single episode even aired.

At least those concerned with cosmetic and surface changes have a little bit of information to base this on. You can't rip into character development without any stories to go on. The again, I guess the wheels just keep on spinning anyway until the new show debuts. Such is the fandom.

I guess I just see the story possibilities. I'm also cautiously optimistic...probably with more emphasis on the optimism. I don't see this April as any better or worse than previous incarnations, I just see how these changes could be used. But then again...what do I know, since we've seen noting...and it's all speculation. Such is the fandom.

Speculations are fun. I can't see how the forum would be better with all the replies being "We'll just have to wait and see."

I don't see anything wrong with doing something new.
But then again, maybe Teen April and Three Toes will destroy the Turtles forever.

There's nothimg wrong with speculation. Even if a lot of it isn't even really speculation, just delusion. However, my post was more on the fact that some people are really bent out of shape that others have concerns. People seem to want it both ways.

It's okay to speculate that this incarnation of April is clearly the ultimate version of the character, without a single story complete... But it's ridiculous for fans to be concerned about substantial cosmetic and origin changes to the characters?

Far, far too much of that going around. But as I said, such is the fandom.

I'm not a fan of the idea of a teenage April, but then again it is a show marketed for kids and I appreciate that they could come up with some kiddie related stories and teenage angst stuff.

The toes, however, is just plain wrong (thinking about it, they were happy to lop off their tails for the last few reprisals but really, that's a totally different aesthetic decision.)

The purpose of this thread was not to necessarily talk about teen April directly, but to discuss the possibilites of a teen April.

Or, just 2012 April in general. This is the 2012 April thread afterall, not the 2012 teen April thread.

How would you like your April? Maybe not my idea of "ultimate" April, maybe you prefer a more mirage-inspired April, or an April closer to '80s toon? Maybe, you'd like a new April that on the level of John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever? Discuss and expand all ideas on your own 2012 April, teen or other (grandma April, anyone?)

Yeah same here. I felt Zack was too young and kinda annoying for actually trying to be the 5th turtle, and then I just disliked Carter because they could of put Casey in his place. But Cody was more of a mixture of Casey and April and never really bugged me.

From my blog post on the subject (go read!): (http://nymonsters.wordpress.com/2011/04/23/reactions-the-new-tmnt-toon/)

This reminds me of a pitch the WB had made for a TMNT series before 4Kids got the rights for it, and my opinion of the concept of April as a peer has not improved. Like with Splinter, it’s a radical change; unlike with Splinter, it’s one with the serious potential to change the character into one that is April in name only, particularly depending on how involved her parents are in her life.

To elaborate, I've always felt that although subtle, an important aspect of April was that she was an independent, unattached person when she meets the turtles. She has a job, she has a home, and she pretty much has her life planned out to some degree. She's also somewhat lacking in social connections outside of work--she has nobody she can call once her apartment gets destroyed. She's also adaptable, and has enough freedom to be able to uproot her life when the turtles turn it upside down. A lot of this, like the "big sister" vibe that others have mentioned, isn't really compatible with a teen living with her parents.

One interesting aspect that I hope will come into play, however, is that as a teen, April doesn't have to be either a scientist or a reporter, and we can see her as having interests in both.

I do hope, however, that her parents (and Robyn!) do end up playing significant roles in the series. It'd feel odd if it weren't, given how important parents usually are in this franchise (particularly in the 2k3 series), and it'd make for interesting new territory. I'd particularly like if her relationship with the turtles isn't something she keeps hidden. On a similar note, I'd like it if she indeed had friends aside from the turtles, or at least made attempts to have them--I'd like to see a reason why she doesn't seem to be able or willing to make friends outside the turtles and their circle.

Also: Does anybody else have any sort of thoughts about April apparently being white, yet again? It may have plenty of precedent on its side, but I'd kinda hoped we'd get a version of her that looked more like the original comics (post perm) or like an older version of The Boondocks' Jazmine DuBois (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubois_Family#Jazmine).

While I am kind of indifferent to the actual appearance of April as long as her character is well written I do have to admit I really like Ross Campbell's design for her and while I know it's totally not what the Nick show is looking for, I think it's a fantastic take on her looking a little younger:

The Big Bad
04-24-2011, 04:34 AM
Canonically? Never. However, her volume 1 incarnation--particularly when drawn by Kevin Eastman--would consistently be drawn with facial features that suggested she was either black or bi-racial, especially after she got her trademark curls in issue 4. Several Mirage staffers--particularly Stephen Murphy in his defunct blog--have commented on the reasons why, and the "official" story now seems to be "Eastman acted as if she was (he based her on his then-girlfriend), Laird didn't, Laird won by default." Laird speaks of it very briefly here (http://peterlairdstmntblog.blogspot.com/2009/08/errata-with-update-08-08-09-from-dan.html).

Sarah, it depends on which co-creator of the TMNT you ask. If you ask me, I always saw April O'Neil as white. If you ask Kevin, I suspect he would say -- as he has in a number of interviews -- that she was of mixed race, much like his former girlfriend (then wife, then ex-wife) April. -- PL

* * *

Stryker: My thoughts on it are mostly 'Who gives a sh*t?'. She was created in the 80s. Almost all women had that hairstyle going. Not to mention her last name and I doubt she's related to Shaq.

Um, I care--that's why I brought it up. I'm also predisposed to believe that Nickelodeon would have given the idea some thought, if they'd thought about it at all. I also suppose that a lot of African American or biracial kids, who don't get to see a lot of characters who look like themselves on TV, would be quite happy to see one getting to play a lead character (and the most important character with racial characteristics) in a series with a history such as this one. Fans of the original comic books would also have something to be happy about, since the change would be both a nod to it and would inevitably raise the book's profile, since a lot of people would be asking why the change occurred. Finally, given that your retort was immediately followed by some reasons why you think the original curly-haired April wasn't black, I'd say you care more than you claim to.

Anyways, I just think the time is right for something like this. The franchise is on the cusp of a major redefinition. A change like this wouldn't be entirely out of step from what's come before. Peter Laird, who might have vetoed something like this in the past, no longer has a say. The stakes have never been lower, and the benefits in the form of buzz and positive press are considerable. With Avatar, Nickelodeon has proven amenable to series in which white people aren't prominent, and that show's success proved that it doesn't have to be a barrier to ratings. All in all, I think it's something to consider.

ETA: Okay, I totally love that Ross Campbell April.

Oy. I really couldn't care less because I don't view TMNT as serious business. I know a bit about the comics and this has been brought up before. Also, isn't she not even a real person in those comics?

I just think the whole racial hero thing is ridiculous. As a bi-racial guy myself and a person who spends time with kids THEY DON'T CARE.

The character could be purple. As long as they find something fun about the character they'll stick around. Thinking some black kid will gain confidence over seeing a black Casey Jones is stupid.

Turo602
04-24-2011, 02:19 PM
Yeah, I have to agree.

What is the point in having April go from Caucasian to African American if that's what she's not known for. I know kids could care less but why mess with it? To piss off older fans? It's as stupid as trying to make Black Panther the only white guy in Wakanda. Why not make Batman a chick in the next Batman movie. He was only a dude in the last two movies, women need confidence as well. Screw it, in the next Superman film, he should be a kid, so that way all the kids could feel better about themselves.

Are you guys seeing my point here? You can't mess with April just like you can't mess with the TMNT and other characters.

I don't care about race, but I agree that to make her black would not make much sense since we know her as a redhead. I do agree about how making her a teenager changes things though as I've stated elsewhere. I'd love to see her family in this, but I'd like to see them know about the Turtles, which might happen if the guys have to save her parents from the Kraang. I've always liked her as an adult because of the independence thing and how she can function on her own.

Heh, I actually thought it'd be neat to see a "teenage" April/Casey etc version of the characters after Watching X-Men Evolution like two years ago and seeing how it can work if you change the status quo a bit. You can incorporate so many things, like say April could still be into science but Baxter instead of being her boss would be her teacher, instead of working at Channel 6,s he is a 'reporter" for the schools news etc. I mean obviously Shredder would not be the Principal, its not a parody but it works fine.

Kevin wanted her to be black. Peter wanted her to be white. With them both doing the stories, her look kept changing. I remember when she got her hair done before the Shredder returns. It was like Kevin Eastman was trying to make her look less white while still explaining to the readers and Peter for the change.
On the cover for #11 I think she looks hispanic.

But O'Neil sounds Irish. I didn't think of her as a red head in the OT and it took me awhile to get used to her design in the 2003 series.

I don't really care how she looks, but if I was in charge of designing her, she would be a brunette and close to her character in the first three films and cartoon show.

As I was mentioning earlier, I really wish they'd just stick with April's being an adult. I fear what they'll do to her character if making her a teenager. Like it was already mentioned, I hope she doesn't act as the stereotypical rebellious teenage girl with daddy issues....or parent issues in general. "No one understands me! Screw you! I hate you mom and dad!"

But...if they have her suffer a tragedy, that'd be interesting, like if you find out that her family runs that antique shop and her father is killed or something and she starts to mature and want to take it over for her father's sake.

I guess I can see the possibilities of what they could do to her character at that age...but I just hope they stay far away as possible from the stereotypical teen drama crap that not all teens go through....and she better have a best friend named Irma who is boy crazy, even if it was implied that she was younger than April in the OT series. :tlol:

It's like how Lifetime over exaggerates that all men are jerks who will rape you or harm you and only want women for their own sexual pleasure and just can't be trusted. :P In other words, it's a stereotype because not all men (or people) are like this. Same goes for teenagers. They're not all emo whiners.

Should be an easy name to remember provided the actress' name sounds like the month that comes after April. I wonder what the old April VA's are thinking of this announcement. That voice actor comparisons will need some updated for this new series (and it doesn't count the live action Aprils which is why we can post threads such as "Best April voice". With a similarly named porn star out there (she even has a Tumblr!), we need a "good girl" image of April here for this show! With a young start, if this series goes a long way, maybe step up the role of April later in the show as she would graduate and become a grown woman. Its kind of funny you mentioned reporting for the high school newspaper as my high school's journalism teacher was named April!

I totally did not follow any of this.

I have a feeling her voiceover of Tinkerbell definately comes closest to a classic "April" tone over it: simply taking her voice and raising it a little. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmiDE2G5bVY&feature=related

You know with April being a teen it gives us some time for her to build into the character we all know. I guess for me seeing April as a Reporter or a Lab Assistant again just doesn't hold a thrill for me it does for others. I have the comics and toons that have come before for that. I like all the new takes, seeing what others do with characters but trying to keep the spirit of the character.

April's been a reporter, a scientist, and a mayor (in the Super Turtles Universe) so her being a teen could be a break for her. Some time off from being an adult and just being a kid. A kid who hangs out with mutants and who's parents have been abducted by evil aliens that is.... :P And hey maybe they'll go in the nexus again and encounter the other Aprils?

Having a multi-verse is ever so fun. :P

Leo656
08-08-2011, 09:55 PM
I like the Multiverse concept in theory; in practice all it ever does is confuse people who barely follow the main storylines. With Superman, for example, when a non-comic fan asks "Who is Superman?" there is no real answer. Do they mean the original 1938 one? The 50s tv show? The movies? The 1986 revamp? The whiny punk from Smallville? Or the god-awful new one coming in September?

Same with TMNT. Having a variety of different, equally "valid" interpretations does nothing but fracture the audience into factions all arguing over which version is "best", and it is the main reason why people who have never been into the characters never will be: they don't even know where to begin, and it's too confusing for them.

The only time a parallel-universe theory ever worked at all was when DC did "Elseworlds" in the 90s. They maintained that there was only one "real" universe for the characters; all the other interpretations were either "what-if" stories or happened "somewhere else". It's no surprise to me that concept was a lot easier for people to understand, rather than "OK, there's a million different versions of these characters and they're all equally 'real'." Whenever someone does a story that actually uses the Multiverse to its full potential (Zero Hour, Final Crisis, etc) people complain it makes no sense, even though having a Multiverse is kinda pointless if the worlds never cross over on an epic scale.

In short, I like having a Multiverse but feel it only works if there's only one "real" universe and the rest are all "Elseworlds". TMNT would be a LOT more popular if every new show/comic/movie wasn't its own brand new universe, I don't see how anyone can argue with that. They could still have all the other versions, but having them clash clearly does not work.

Cowabunga Carl

Leo656 I agree and disagree with you. A multiverse is always tricky. However they don't cross over with each other on a normal basis. Each time this franchise gets restarted it's always from the ground up. Someone could jump in on any of them with no knowledge about anything TMNT and not be lost.

Well, there's good and bad when it comes to making April a teenager, first it's an attempt to involve the teen demographic, so whatever they THINK teens are into these days would be piled into her to try to relate and interest them. Then there's the good such as making her somewhat likeable (hopefully) in some sense and make her more down to Earth, however if they make her bratty and spoiled like some shows have done to their teen characters, then we're going to have problems.

Funny that the Turtles' two closest human friends share actors with two of Ramona Flowers's Evil Exes. Makes ya wonder if the Turtles themselves would be friends with Scott and Ramona or not ;).

On a related note, when I read Tales #67, I imagined little Shadow having a voice that kinda sounded like Mae Whitman.

The multiverse is an interesting idea, but crossovers between different media incarnations of TMNT are best left to special occasions like Turtles Forever and the last part of that Moo Mesa team-up story arc in Tales. I wouldn't want the new cartoon and new movie do such a thing (at least not so early as far as the cartoon is concerned), but with IDW comics (once they're established their indentity and are settled in their storylines) and toylines, it's a different story. Same with the video games, as I'd love a good TMNT game using a similar plot as those concurrent Spider-Man games, Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time. Hmmm...

I had some thoughts on April's character, I want to run these past people... It seems like over-analyzing a show that hasn't even come into being yet, but these could be some major elements to April's character in this show.

Okay, the whole idea of Splinter training April as a Kunoichi... He MUST be reluctant in doing this. With the life that he's gone though, and the life the boys have had, How could he look at an inexperienced young girl and say Yes without any hesitation?

My idea is, after a few run-ins with whatever bad guys they meet up with, maybe april asks him to train her so she can defend herself. Being an old-fashioned type right out of Japan, he probably turns her down on several occasions - too dangerous, she is not in the physical condition, yadda yadda... Maybe the boys also ask Splinter to train her, or even try to train her themselves (which ends up making things worse).

Maybe Splinter sees something in April that changes his mind over time. Mind you, Splinter's got a daughter in this universe, which we are still in the process of finding out what happened to her. What if Splinter gradually sees April as a replacement for his daughter, and that's what causes him to agree to train her? If he Was to agree to train her, I would think it could only happen after a long period of time. Not in the first season. Maybe the late second, early third...

Oh, and finally: I Don't want them to make her a "Nothing surprises me" Kinda girl. She panicked (:P ) in the first movie, she can freak out and faint in this show...

They decided to make her 16 years old because they wanted to make something different. At the begining of 2003 series she around 20 years old and at the end of it about 30. in 1987 series she was more than 40 years old from the begining. So it dosent mean that she will be 16 years through the series. she will become older as the show continues.

Um... fact check?

Pretty sure the turtles remained teenagers throughout the 2k3 series and the Fred Wolf series, so no characters would have aged 10 years over the course of the show. And April wasn't 40 at any point in the OT; she stated her age as 28 in Leatherhead: Terror of the Swamp.

The characters definitely aged, but how much is left to speculation.

I think Teen April is cool and leaves us with at on of story opportunities that were hard for OT and 2k3 April, at least OT April had the reporter excuse, I always felt 2k3 felt like the odd girl in the group in how she was implemented in a lot of adventures. I think Don having a crush is cool too, in fact I definitely noticed in various media like 2k3/OTgames that Don had something for April so its neat that its finally canon in one universe.

I've always seen April as a sort of almost-mother/aunt figure to the turtles, which is one of the things that always stood out from most other strange-creatures-with-human-friend relationships in fiction. Also the fact that she's not the main character but a supporting role to the strange creatures in fiction is relatively rare (with only a few exceptions I can think of off the top of my head, such as the old Transformers). As such, I think it's a bit of a loss to have her brought down to the same age as the Turtles, not because it's a dramatically stupid idea in general, but because it removes an aspect of the relationship that was relatively rare and brought a certain family dynamic to the comics. April was the adult human non-ninja character, to counterbalance Splinter's parenting methods.
But I'm gonna stay openminded and wait and see how it turns out. It might work out.

I like her having her own life outside of them. Seems if she's younger, it'd be easier for her to just hang with them a lot (sorta like how Zack probably would have for the OT series, if the writers would've willed it). I like her aunt/mother type role she seemed to play in their lives, but like you, I'll just have to wait and see where it goes before fully judging it.

I think she'll be fine. There is a Youtube video which shows Mae doing a live voiceover at Tinkerbell, and if April character ages, the voice changes should work out fine. Mentioning about raising her voice to make it a little higher is very typical of what a typical April VA does. Plus, her mom was recording with Renae Jacobs back in 1990 for Raphael Meets his match, so there may be some advice coming forth for this new series through her mother's experience on the OT. I'm sure she'll look better than in the CGI movie.

I like the idea that she'll be around the Turtles' age. They already have Splinter for an adult figure to look up to, now they will have someone their age to relate to (as far as mutant turtles and humans can, I guess). Nearly every incarnation of the Turtles have her as a mother/aunt figure, this will be a nice change.

I'm a little concerned about teenage April, especially since she has been the older sister/aunt/mother figure in the past as well as where this will leave her relationship with Casey if he's in this version, but I've always liked the training April as a female ninja angle and I love that she'll be voiced by Mae Whitman. So I'm keeping an open mind.

I have to agree with you. April wasn't hanging out with them because she had nothing better to do. She, in a way, looked at them as a part of her family and cared for each one of them.
And Mikey turning to April in the Turtle Titan was really heartwarming.

I can't really say that I hate or love the idea of 16 year old April. There are a lot of ways that they can screw her up and make her useless, but there are also a lot of ways they can make her a great and useful character. What I am saying is, it depends how they go about using and developing her. Until they release more information about her character all we can do in speculate.

The other thing that was brought up was April's parents. They should aslo make April very resourcefull. She's not your typical 16 year old kid. After her folks get mutated, she is more mutare for her age to take care of herself.I just don't want the typical teenage tag along(IE Zach). She accaully does stuff. That was why I suggested her being good with computors. If you look at teen girls today a lot of them do have laptops,Iphones,I pads and so on.

SherlockJr

She should most definitely be resourceful and technology-savvy. In many regards, I can see her as being very identical to her 2k3 rendition, except with a little less confidence and being more of an outsider amongst her peers. Being separated from her parents gives an opportunity for character development, so I think I'm kind of excited for a fresh version of the April character.

She's only 16 right? Internships are for college students.

And even so, interns generally don't do a whole lot. So it'd be a stupid plot line.

I'm obviously not asking them to make a 16-year-old cartoon character sexy, but I hope her design isn't as awkward as the April in the 2007 movie...or for that matter, every human character in that movie except for the villain.

I also loved Angel. I never took her as the "stereotypical rebellious teenager;" she just seemed like someone growing up in the proletarian side of New York, with a lot of temptation from gangs, but still a fundamentally good person. Compared to that series's April, who was a more educated, middle-class type.

Even if this April does end up a little stereotypical, I probably won't mind too much, but the one thing I do not want is for her to be one of those immature characters who thinks they're tougher than they actually are, and as such charge into battle and rapidly become a damsel in distress. It was tolerable when OT April did it because it was her job, but when a naive kid does it just because they can't leave well-enough alone, it's very annoying.

I think that april as 16 is a very interesting. She always had a very interesting friendship with the turtles. As a teenager she will be able to understand their problems more, like their desire to see what is above and beyond the sewers in New York City instead of staying in the sewer all the time.

A young April will be interesting, it doesn't break it for me. As for any buttkicking she may or not do, if it's where she just learns self-defense basically, that makes perfect sense to me. I mean, wouldn't YOU want to learn something if you were in some of the situations past Aprils have been and this one likely will be too?

At the same time though, I don't want her matching blades with Karai easily. That was one of my major 'umm...' moments in the CG film.

I have many pet peeves with 2k7 April-- that super skinny character design and the fact that she's so easily able to kick butt. Yeah, we can see she's been training, but there's no way you can get THAT good that fast. In the Nick series, I hope we see April develop self-defense at a reasonable pace.

Then again, it had been years since the last TMNT movie, and Karai got a very wimpy-looking design in 2007 as well. I mean; this is what she looked like when she debuted in the comics (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f328/PseudoPsychic/Karai_Sword.jpg?t=1248560766). She got shafted.

Yes, Karai was much too waif-ish looking as well, so skinny a petite gal like me could snap her in half. Aside from the turtles themselves, the character designs in that movie were not to my liking at all. I have more hope for the Nick series. Unlike some, the new designs for the turtles have grown on me somewhat and hopefully the new April will have some meat on her.

I have nothing really against the Nick turtle designs, but they do look rather basic. They're probably fine for action scenes but I don't know how they'd fair in terms of emotions. Expressive faces on the Turtles are something that movie did very well. It also had very detailed scale patterns on them; something I just don't see in the Nick models. I do, however, appreciate how Nickelodeon put little quirks in the designs of each turtle. It's always great when the boys are more than just recolors.

I'm pretty confident they can avoid human designs as ugly as the 2007 film; it's merely a matter of making better choices.

This new April looks a lot like Misty from the hips upward as she was also a redhead (Penny is blonde), complete with yellow shirt and short blue pants and ponytail. If it weren't for those long black shoes/socks, they would have been sororital twins! At least as it would have caused some confustion! But her function does have some Penny influences (instead of a magic book, something that reminds me of Donatello's sewer lab in the OT).

I'm kinda disappointed with that design. I loved the original Sewer playset because it was closed. It felt like it was underground (for me as a kid). This is too open and too large in my opinion.
I'm not digging the design all that well. They look too much like the 2007 toys. Well, I can't wait to see the other toyline with the classic comic action figures.

I do like the designs for The Utrom and Splinter though. I'm totally buying them if they come here to Iceland.

That's exactly what I thought Splinter looked like. I really don't know what to think of his new design. He looks like he would beat the snot out of you just for looking at him.

I really think they should have put the number 6 on April's shirt instead of a five, as homage to OT April being a channel 6 news reporter.

Okay; so it's not exact, but I see what they're trying to do. Splinter's never really been modeled after a domesticated rat, but it doesn't seem like that bad of an idea to do it for the first time ever. After all, what would be the point of watching new adaptations if they were just the same as the old one?

However, why are we talking about Splinter in this thread?
