View Full Version : Serling ain't that bad...

My 4Kids TMNT viewing has taken me to Fast Forward...and the very annoying interpretation of 4Kids Mikey. But surprisingly one thing that makes it actually more bearable is Serling. The sardonic way he gets pleasure from Mikey's finally getting his comeuppance. To me Serling actually kinda speaks for me, the annoyed audience, when it comes to Mikey's shenanigans. (Heck, even Turtle Titan 2.0, whose episode I'm watching as I type, is the same way with the "very annoying citizen" that is Michelangelo.)

I was always fond of Serling. I didn't think I would be when I saw the first episode but I immediately grew fond of him.

I love how Serling ripped off Terminator in his first spoken line:
"Come with me if you want to live."
He was a very unnecessary character in Back to the Sewers, but I did enjoy him during the Fast Forward season.

You know, I completely forgot that Serling came back with them to the present for Back to the Sewers.
Shows how much I remember that season.

They just need to release it on DVD....
And yeah, Winters one of my least favorite episodes is Incredible Shrinking Serling....for obvious reasons. :P
Oh, gosh, Mikey has the Raph Puppet...

I just found him a very sympathetic character. He sacrificed himself for Cody, like a true samurai. He always got disrespected by The Turtles, so I thought he was right to return fire. It wasn't until BttS that he lost my favor. Mikey was the only one to really disrespect him then, but he still constantly bitched about "those hooligans". That's right, J-dog. He wasn't focusing his disdain on Mikey. Mikey just naturally provided the most examples of misfortune to make fun of. But, to be fair, I'm sure he was happier to mock Mikey. He'd have a screw loose not to.

Splinter's not a turtle, tho. :P Keep nit-picking my wording. See where it gets ya. ^_^
EDIT: Guess ya don't care for the name, J-Dog, eh?

Wasn't nit picking...just saying he respected Splinter is all...
Don't mind J-Dog....G-Unit??...nah it's been done.
Yeah, I figured that you were just "adding to" my words as I'm sure you've noticed that they're only nit-pickable on the rare occasion that I've typooed. I just felt like teasin' ya anyway.
"G-Unit"... Not only unoriginal, but... disturbingly... intimate. What would your wife think?[/teasin'again]
Boy, am I in a teasin' mood right now...
I always liked Serling he wasn't that bad not as bad as Mikey was anyway.
I like Serling, but then again, I like the 2k3 Michelangelo. Serling reminds me mostly of Niles from 'The Nanny': the voice, the attitude, position in life. It's practically infringement (this would make Michelangelo's equivalent Cece).

Just finished Turtle X-tinction. Serling's "death" almost brought a tear to my eye.

This is totally why I liked Serling during the Fast Forward season I am so glad I am not the only one that saw this!! :tgrin:
I just thought Serling was really the only one that delivered humor I laughed at in a consistent basis and really pointed out how stupid Mikey acted and was my kind of "voice of reason".
I was actually a little excited when they brought him back for BTTS until I saw how they utilized his character :tgrumble:
I think the only reason BTTS had Serling was because they were re-using mostly scripts they had made for FF season 2, just changing them from the future to the present and making April take Cody's role while there is no real counterpart to Serling in the present besides Fugitoid so they just decided to keep Serling. I mean the entire season for the most part can easily take place in the future in fact some of the stuff even makes more sense like Karai having nothing to do with the foot because she wasn't in the future and a new guy being in charge of the foot.
As far as Serling, I didn't like him the first time I saw FF but the second time I liked him a bit more but still wasn't a fan. Sucks for Serling, at least with Cody I liked him the first time even if not the second time. I usually like added characters that are considered annoying but most people like say Jar Jar Binks or Scrappy Doo but not so much with those two.

I liked Serling in Fast Forward, but his appearance in BttS (and the entire backstory and design for BttS) was unneccessary.

They really did mess up Mikey's character in Fast Forward. He was really annoying in that series.
Mikey was pretty terrible in most of the 2k3 series, in fact I'd say his level of stupidity in FF/BTTS didn't take as much of a dive as Raph, god Raph deteriorated even more than Mikey did.
Raph's OOCness wasn't nearly as irritating and 'in your face' as Mikey's, so I'd say they were about even.

I was never really fond of Serling. But Mikey was a douche during fast forward especially the titan 2.0 episode. I'd be unlikeable too if I had to spend that much time with FF Mikey, and bitchtastic FF Raph.

I actually enjoyed Mikey quite a bit in the main 2K3 series, seasons 1-5.

This forum cracks me up so much sometimes. How contradictory people are is hilarious. Next thing you know there will be a topic about Biggles and how he wasn't bad either.

Not that I have ever complained about Serling on here previously, but sometimes hindsight is 20/20 and not seeing something for a while can make you appreciate it more.
I personally have a laundry list of complaints about Fast Forward but Serling was one of the few things I liked about it. :tsmile:

What happened with FF was pretty funny to watch. When BTTS was announced everyone talked about how awesome it was going to be, and by then the FF trashing had been going on for awhile Once FF ended and BTTS started to air people saw that FF really wasn't that bad. This was probably because BTTS was 100X worse. I'm sure now that TMNT is dead in the water for another year BTTS might start to get some love but who knows. I always liked FF and always thought BTTS was eh. There's some okay episodes but for the most part as a whole it's just not very good.

As a whole, I liked Back to the Sewers better than Fast Forward, but I do think the animation in FF was superior to BTTS.
BTTS was probably about the darkest and edgiest the show got given the sum of the season, IMO. Too bad all the action was burdened down with the endless sub-plots of cyber-Splinter search, Serling, Justice Force, and etc.

Yeah the animation was one issue I had with BTTS. It had some alright episodes but as a whole it was sillier then FF.

You really think so? I always thought that title belonged to Season 4. I mean I can see the Don subplot where he blames himself dipping into that realm a little bit. I think Leo losing his morals lead to darker times for the turtles.

I'll have to re-watch BttS and let you know...
I agree, hindsight is 20/20. I'm not sure what I thought of >> when it aired, but I'm actually disappointed it didn't get a second season. Not only Serling, but the Inuwashi Gunjin grew on me. I guess they kinda got some closure, but I'd have liked to have seen them again.

Agreed. I felt about mid-way through FF that the show had great potential for development once all the writers had gotten the "goof off" episodes out of their system and started to get a feel for the characters and their environment. But my only fear would have been that another season of FF may have resulted in the series being canceled without the TMNT ever getting back to their own time.

True, but I'd have still liked to see some closure with Dunn and the Dark Turtles. Heck, I even started to like Torbin Zixx. :P

I was really hoping BTTS would have done a flashback episode to show how that all got resolved. That was the one lose end of FF they didn't tie up.

This thread is making me want to re-watch FF and BTTS because I am realizing I don't remember them that well.

Not to be contrary, but I like the Fast Forward theme song the best too. Well, for now, anyway. Tomorrow I may hate it.:P
