I enjoy action movies, video games, and also action figures. Pretty much all of my entertainment deals with some form of fictional violence. Even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are violent. This usually doesn't bother me, as its all in good fun and its fake.
This morning, I woke up screaming "What the hell?!" I found myself living in Gotham City and it was f***ing scary. Not fun at all. I got to see Batman and Gordon standing nearby on a street corner, but I was so busy dodging grenades that I could care less if one of my all time favorite superheroes was about 20 feet away. No time for meet and greets or autographs. Who was the villain? The Joker? The Riddler? No, it was the extremists from the middle east. Bad dream, to say the least.
So I started thinking about everything that I am exposed to on TV, video games, and other media. I believe that between the constant News coverage of the terrorists, and the fictional violence from video games, movies, and TV shows, that I have kind of psychologically messed myself up.
Why is it that almost all of the entertainment for males involves violence? I didn't think it bothered me, because its fake, but obviously it is having an impact on my mind. Almost all of the movies, video games, and TV shows for males involves killing and some kind of horrible conflict. Its endless bulls**t. There's too much money made from producing this content, and people continue to buy it, so it is a vicious cycle that doesn't have an end.
This reminds me of the boss in the film Small Soldiers, who said something about not calling it violence, that it should be called action. Even though they are the same.
