View Full Version : Do you think Old Hob, the new mutant cat, will appear in the Nick cartoon?

It is not unusual to see characters who originate from comics find their way into cartoons or vice versa. We saw it a few years ago when Hun was introduced into the Mirage comics, who had started in the 4kids cartoon.

In the IDW TMNT comics, a cat mutant named Old Hob will be introduced. Since we know in the show, "The Kraang" will be creating lots of mutants, it only seems natural to see an already new and established mutant like Old Hob make his way over to the cartoons.

The IDW series also has wraps around the Turtles arms and legs, almost to keep the theme between the series similar, even if they are not the same continuity.

Do you think the mutant cat, Old Hob, will appear in the Nick cartoon?

As someone in the reveal thread said, he was created by IDW, therefore will probably not appear in the cartoon.

And, just shut the f*ck up about Scratch already. We get it.

And why exactly does this mean the Nick cartoon writers can't use him down the line? You've never heard of characters who originated in comics jumping over to cartoons or vice versa in any superhero property?

I can also see a mutant cat being very marketable for both the Playmates toyline and for use as an additional villain in the series.

Here's an example:

Mirage owned TMNT, but didn't own Rocksteady or Bebop. Both of which were created by Fred Wolf Studios. That pretty much explains why they weren't in any comics besides Archie.

Wrong. No one at Mirage ever wanted to use them. That's just an awful example all around... let's look at the OT's villains: Leatherhead, Ratking, Shredder, Baxter/Mousers Triceratons, and a few more were from the comics then appeared on the show.

As I said in the other thread Nick could probably use Old Hob if they wanted to. Not being something created in house by Nick Studios though I don't think he is going to first and foremost on their mind.

I doubt we would see him in season one as the character hasn't even been tried yet in the comics (unlike the slew of Mirage villains listed above) and they would probably want to see how he preforms in the media before they would decide to add him to show.

Once again though as I also stated in one of the comic threads yesterday I am all guessing this because that's all we can do at this point. Guessing is fun but any of us could be right and there won't really be no clear cut answers until something actually happens with IDW or Nick.

:trazz:

Also can we have a "I don't really care at this point" option on the poll?? Because until I actually see Old Hob in action I can't really form an opinion about wanting him anywhere.

Keep in mind the Nick cartoon won't start till 2012, yet the issue with Old Hob is coming out around September, isn't it? They'll have an entire year and then some to see fan reaction to the character. And then he can appear in late Season 1, since we're getting 26 episodes.

"The Kraang" are said to have a mutation chamber to create mutants. I'd be very surprised if we don't get a character jumping over from the comics like Old Hob to be one of them.

I have no idea what the animation time for a CGI show is, but the 2k3 show was recorded and animated like a year in advance of the episodes making it onto the TV. I remember over hearing some of the 4Kids voice actors talking about plot points from season four when we just finished watching season 2.

I am assuming CGI will take less time, but I still have a feeling that they in the very least have a very solid foundation for what they want to do with the season one storyline. Considering they are already talking about Casey being in season two, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't already have a rough idea what they want to do there also.

That's once again not saying Old Hob couldn't show up, especially if the comics sell very well, they may want to profit on that, I am just saying I don't think Nick is probably too focused or concerned about this character presently in my opinion.

That's not the point. He was created by IDW, therefore, Nick doesn't own that character.

Your example isn't very good either, as Fred Wolf had a deal with Mirage to use any of their characters. Same as how those you mentioned appeared in 2k3. Because the studio could use any of Mirage's characters.

Slap Happy, Mirage did own Bebop and Rocksteady. They were used a little in Archie's TMNT Adventures, but after that they just weren't used, because Larid didn't think they fit.

Nick owns the entire TMNT property, of course they're going to own any TMNT character IDW creates. IDW has the license, Nick owns the property.

And Mirage owned every single Fred Wolf character, Peter Laird has said this many times.

That's not entirely true, either. Nick owns all but the Fred Wolf series (and maybe NM...who really knows/cares)

They don't own the episodes, they own the characters. If Mirage owned them and Nick bought everything from Mirage they own them.

IDW's Editor in Chief created the charactor of Old Hob, therefore IDW owns the cat man. It doesn't matter that Viacom owns the Turtles.

Did Mirage own Usagi since he appeared in the comics, cartoons, and even had figures in the Turtles' toy line? No, he's still owned by Stan Sakai.

Same situation here.

CyberCubed

Usagi is a crossover character, of course they don't own him. Same with Savage Dragon, Cerebrus, Flaming Carrot, etc.

It's quite likey that IDW have to sign over the rights for any character they create to Nick. This happened with the 4kids series, which is why characters like Hun and Bishop were owned by Mirage and now Nick.

And why in the world do people keep asking if Mirage or Nick own Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady, of course they do.

We've gone throught his a bunch of times, Mirage and now Viacom because of the buy out owns Rocksteady/Beebop along every Fred Wolf character, this is why we even saw them in Turtles Forever in the first place. Now the actual Fred Wolf show is owned by Fred Wolf. Saban owned The Next Mutation, they sold to Disney and now Disney owns TNM show, however all characters from that show were owned by Mirage and now Viacom. Pretty much everything TMNT is owned by Mirage, the only things we're unsure of is some of the Konami characters like Aska and Ninjara. Obviously crossover characters are not owned by Mirage and or/Viacom.

Now who owns Old Hob the Scratchcat depends on what the contract says, most likely it says that any characters created are owned by Viacom, thats the case most of the time on other franchises, however there have been exceptions were stuff like that has slipped through like The Tick cartoon being a good example and because of it Disney owns those characters originally made for the show, but for the most part its the latter and not the former, thats the way Mirage did things.

As for the actual question, I guess we might, who knows. If he's a major character then its chances are high and if he's a one shot them his chances are smaller. They do seem to be basing the new show more on the comics than the OT so I'd say its more like'y to see Old Hob over Scratch, of course a perfect way to pander to both fans is to make an amalgam version of both characters. I like it when characters from one media in a franchise appear in another, whether its from cartoon to comics or viceversa.

I think the 10 people who voted, "No," will very likely be surprised when the cartoon gets under way. I doubt all of Season 1 is done in script form, which means Old Hob could appear in the later half of the season.

Who do you think a cat mutant would appeal to? Teens and adults reading comics or little kids who want to see the Turtles fight other animal mutants?

And you know good and well its a character Playmates would die trying to make a toy out of.

I honestly am curious why all of this matters so much to you?

Much likeBubblyShell22 I could currently care less if Old Hob does or doesn't appear in the cartoon, mostly because I don't even know that much about his character yet.

Because he's the first new character created since Nick purchased TMNT. Remember the first new character 4kids created was Hun, and we saw quite a bit of him.

If Tristan gets to continue his Gang Wars comic story, we'll see more of Hun in the Comics.

Hey, CyberCubed -- or is that C2 for short?

Far as I know, all IDW creations are fair game for Nickelodeon to use. Our two versions are separate beasts, but that's not to say we won't see Old Hob in the cartoon down the line -- I'd dig that!

Thanks for your interest and support!

Tom W.

Lo and behold, I was right. Any IDW character will also be owned for Nick and be able to be used in the TV show if they choose to.

Why in the world did anyone doubt this? I am glad we have the record straight, and I'm betting the Nick TV show writers wouldn't hesitate to use a cat mutant in the show at some point. I also fully expect a figure from Playmates.

I bet the 10+ people who voted, "No he won't appear in the show," are looking very silly right about now.

Gloating won't make you any friends. But, like I told you, people are against you. They want to see you end up wrong no matter how reasonable your claims might be.

Which is why I thought, if anyone else made this same exact thread, the votes on the polls would have probably been split more even.

It is good to know that any character IDW creates IS owned by Nick, so if we get any other cool new characters down the line, we can see them make the jump to the TV show.

Wow that's EXACTLY what I have said in two different places on the this forum now.

Most people didn't disagree with you that Nick could use the character if they wanted to. None of us were certain if Nick would have any interest in the character, since they have such a multitude of other characters they can already work with and I am certain they want to invent there own.

You probably shouldn't talk like he has already been included in the cartoon until you actually speak to someone at Nick about it.

I am actually more interested in seeing a cartoon take on Old Hob than seeing him in the comics. For some reason I feel animal mutants work better when they're in cartoons than when they try to play them up as, "adult" in comic books.

I mean we're dealing with a talking cat here.

No one has ever balked at Usagi Yojimbo, a talking rabbit. Or the already mentioned Samurai Cat.

It's all in the writing.

I voted for no, but I think it's possible he could still appear later down the line. I'm almost positive he won't appear in season one, though.

Who the hell is Old Hob, and why should anyone care?

A new character that'll be introduced in the upcoming IDW comics by Tom Waltz and Kevin Eastman.

Let's not forget the talking turtles and talking rat. As you said, it's all in the writing.

I just voted no and I don't feel silly at all Cybercube. Some of your logic just leaves me scratching my head and trying to figure out if your serious or just playing the part of a fool. Either way I am BubblyShell22 and FearlessLeader i don't care one way or another right now mostly because I have no idea about the character.

As for who would he appeal to more well as we haven't seen any interpretation of him we can't say. If he is written really well in the comics and is a legitimate threat it might be the comic crowd. The cartoon, if he is used, could make him a goofy character no one likes. I guess my point is really we just need to wait and see what is done with the character.

I get that you would rather have Scratch or at least that's what you were saying when the news of this character first came out. But come on man, calm down and breath.

After a few seasons, when they get creatively lazy, I wouldn't doubt they use him or derive a character from him.
