My favorite April is the one from Mirage Vol 1 #11.
It's one of the few times she's actually a well rounded character.
Close on her heels is Judith Hoag in the first movie.

4kids April is definitely my favorite. She encompasses all that is good in a character such as hers. She is strong, kind, and smart. I think, all things considered, she is the most complete version of the character

This is tough. I loved Sarah Michelle Gellar's April in the TMNT movie. And April in the original cartoon will always be "classic April" to me. But I think I'm gonna have to go with Veronica Taylor's 2003 cartoon April as my favorite.

Here's a similar thread that has been active fairly recently:
http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=30821
Before this thread turns into a ludicrous mess of arguing and awkward photos, I figured I'd state my take.
A lot of people think of Fred Wolf April O'Neil as the stereotypical damsel-in-distress who had to be saved "at least once a day." In fact, April wasn't all that helpless in the Original Toon, she just got in over her head far too often (as recently recognized (http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/nostalgia-critic/30723-top-11-dumbasses-in-distress) by the Nostalgia Critic). Any human being wouldn't be much of a match against an army of androids, two muscle bound mutant punks, and a well armed ninja crimelord packing Dimension X technology. She also gets an undeservedly bad rap as being helpless and cowardly. While it's true that she may have often become a damsel-in-distress, it was usually because she always threw caution to the wind and got in over her head trying to get a story. The fact that the turtles always bailed her out probably gave her more confidence to keep taking foolish risks. Once she became close with the turtles, bad guys started to target her directly just to get at the TMNT. She really was a Lois Lane clone in that regard.
Also, OT April had a number of hidden talents, the most notable of which were her phenomenal driving skills (http://www.megavideo.com/?d=5UTKGDPY)!
I think the Archie Comics have probably done the best job with April's character development so far, making her a multi-dimensional character and a competent physical thread but doing it gradually (despite her weird supernatural backstory that was cited as an explanation for her quick progress in the martial arts). Given the choice between fighter & supporting character though, I'd prefer the Old Toon version over the "Lara Croft" portrayal seen in the Imagi flim. I like the idea that a person doesn't have to be a fighter in order to fight evil and help save the day.

For me, I can only go by the Aprils in the films, OT April, Mirage April, and Archie April. Movie 3 is a blur for me...since I've blocked the movie out. My cousin and I pretend movie 3 never existed :trazz:
Movie 1 April I liked, since she had a, "I'm going to try to fight, even if I do fail!" Movie 2 April was okay too. TMNT April, alright, but found her a little bit boring, or maybe it's just because of her role in that film that bored me, along with Casey.
OT April I didn't fully mind, and liked how she'd do almost anything for a good story. Brave and definitely would try to defend herself if she could, just was way too ambitious (Slytherin =P) and always ended up being in over her head. I still don't view her as being a damsel in distress, though. Sometimes it's not even her fault that she gets abducted or "kidnapped". Wrong place at the wrong time. I also liked the fact that her character did eventually mature to the point of knowing her limitations and not putting herself in danger for the sake of a story in the later episodes (Red Sky arc).
Mirage April was okay in the early issues, but just grew boring after a while as a character in general. Casey and the Turtles were way more interesting to read about.
Archie April I really did like, I suppose, in comparison to the others. I like how she gradually learned self-defense and martial arts. I also like the story with that boyfriend of hers. That was pretty interesting. The only gripe I had with her, just like with Splinter, was the character design. Man I couldn't stand it. She looked more like a Disney princess than what my view of April is.
So, guess Archie April wins this for me followed by movie 1 and 2 April and then OT April and then Mirage April and then TMNT April.

I'd have to say 2k3 and the first movie April are my favourites they are both quite different, but deep and realistic characters. 2K3 April worried a lot, and movie April was very happy and, like the OT cartoon was persistent but was probably a far bit smarter and multi-dimensional.

Going to go with Archie comics April. Like others have said, I like how she gradually became more able to defend herself with martial arts. Plus, she eventually dropped the yellow jumpsuit. Sure, her later outfit was a bit more generic, but it least it provided a little variety. You'd think April would at least have that jumpsuit in different colors, like maybe black for when she wants something slimming.

As a kid I thought April was hot (well I still do) but found it annoying how every episode had to feature her and her news stories somehow and couldn't just be about the Turtles kicking ass on their own or whatever... That's why I liked the Archie comics... and the 2k3 one, April was there, and was needed from time to time.. but didn't have to be in every single episode/issue. I mean April in the 80's was a useful informant but was also mostly a DiD cause there wasn't much for her to do in certain episodes except get captured... just for the sake of having her in the episode. I mean before Red Sky I think you can count the episodes that didn't feature April AT ALL on one hand.... and that's like 7 seasons... It's like the writers were forced to cram April (and as an extension the Channel 6 News Crew) in each and every single episode wether they were needed or not.
I mean in 2K3 she was there when needed and not when not. I mean really.. what could she have done in the fights against the Shredder or the Battle Nexus and Bishop and whatnot besides get in the way and become a DiD too? I mean sure, the later seasons April that learned to fight could take a Foot or two out, but eventually Hun, Baxter, Bishop, Shredder, Karai, etc would have grabbed her and use her as a hostage....

It seemed like every episode of the original TMNT cartoon had April animated just a little bit differently. There are some episodes that did indeed feature April with quite a bit of um, yeah. But then there's other episodes where the animation was so terrible that I don't think she looked attractive at all.

80's cartoon April is my favorite. OldManWinters pretty much summed up the reasons why she is so great.
However I have to 4KIDS April her due here. She may not have been my favorite April but after rewatching some of the series lately I have to say she is a pretty good APril. She is probably the most down to earth April around. I like how she comes across as the "every-woman" in the 4KIDS show. I like how she isn't this over sexualized "hot" girl stereotype and that she is cute and pretty in a very down to earth kind of way without it swallowing up her character. Like being attractive and cute isn't her over-all character.

Given I have a thing for April, these are my rankings.
1. 1987 Original series April: Ignore how Turtles Forever trashed her. Sure, she got captured no less than 78 times according to my research, but she also rescued the turtles in a handful of key situations throughout the show. She taught us how to be a good employee at the office, and her docile voice always grabs your attention.
2. 2003 4Kids April: While not quite as prominant (i.e. just about every episode) in the 1987 series, she was an important help to the turtles. I just don't like her character design quite as much as the 1987 series which keeps it from being #1.
3. Judith Hoag: She could have worn a redhead wig as in the Coming Out of their Shells April, but combines the comics/cartoon rendition fine. Her voice seems to lack the excitement of other Aprils a bit, however.
4. IDW April: A bit too early to call, but the style fusion between the many versions seems to suit this April well so far.
5. Coming out of Their Shells (Sherri Rene Scott): April sings! Finally a live action redhead April! But it was so-so.
6. Mirage April: The first version, but of course the style drags it down a bit and didn't like the origin story and could have appeared a bit more.
7. Paige Turco: Her voice sounds better than Judith's, but she just doesn't look quite like the April we know.
8. Archie April (not counting the early issues): The sleeper (including the mini-series). But I just didn't enjoy April as much as other versions. You might as well call her "Ariel April", and the May East saga drawings are more to be desired.
9. Operation Blue Line April: SoCal-style April with some blonde in her hair that makes the other live Aprils seem a world apart. Your mileage may vary for this one, but given how much of a footnote OBL is, I left it down here.
10. TMNT 2007: Sorry, that's Buffy, not April; and also the 3D design was so bad that I've seen a better version of it on this board!
I will update this list as soon as the Nickelodeon series starts (or post a new thread about how the 2012 April compares with the others).

I'm going to go with archie april. Here's why:
I prefer April as a news reporter, I feel it just has a lot more story potential then an April who's running an antique shop. It also allows here more involvement in the turtle's adventures. Just don't turn her into Lois Lane like the OT did.
It makes sense to me for April to learn ninjitsu skills after hanging out with Splinter and the turtles for a while. Although I must say it shouldn't be overdone either, the 2007 movie would be a great example of overdoing this.
It's great when she's able to defend herself against moderate threats.
Archie april was able to carry her own 3 issue mini-series as well, truly a testament to how good a character she was.

Yeah, I just meant her character design in 2k3.
Slightly off topic but it bums me out that she is going to be a teen in the new tmnt series. I hate how writers assume that kids can no longer relate to supporting characters being adults. With this logic I suppose kids wont care about the new Avengers film coming out because the heroes are all grown men? Pft. April should be a grown character because I believe April is at her best in a big sister/motherly role for the Turtles....the idea of April as a peer bothers me along with this current generation's obsession over youth.

I would go with the original cartoon, but the Archie Comics version is a reporter and more capable of taking care of herself.

Not me, looks weird for a reporter to be wearing. Always looked like she ought to be busting ghosts in that, not breaking news.
Archie April is the most well rounded, well-adjusted character.
