View Full Version : Should I do it?

I've been asked to do an illustration gig of sorts, for a Wizard Of Oz spinoff book kinda thing, something very much in the vein of Andrew's TMNT vol. 3 revival. These folks carefully studied the source material, got feedback from past folks involved, & are very passionate about the series. They've got a manuscript ready & just need an artist. The Andrew of the project so to speak, has limited funds but offered to pay (somewhere above $100) for 15 black and white illustrations similar to those drawn by (one of?) the original artists which you see below (which is of the main character of this particular story). Also he needs a full color cover.

I've never really done a paid job of this capacity outside of doing album covers & layouts/logos/t-shirt designs for bands and hip hop artists before. Sure I draw plenty of comic art & other things but nothing professionally per se. I do feel that I could likely handle this with enough ease as I'm pretty good at mimicking other artists, but I dunno...
Do you think it's worth it? It works out to 10 dollars a picture if I'm paid $150. To my knowledge this won't be published on a large scale, but in a similar matter to our vol. 3 book - enough for the really invested fans. I'm leaning towards yes but I was just hoping to have your thoughts as well, especially if you're also an artist!

Is there a reason not to do it?

If you believe that you can do it, then go for it man. Your work is vastly improving, and something like this would be both a great learning curve and look good on a resume. (pronounced resoomay :P)
If you feel confident i would go for it.

At the very least this could be a feather in your cap for future work as an artist...if that's what you want to do in the future.

Thanks for the kind encouragement everyone, that's kinda why I made the thread. Not to look for attention, but to get a friendly push (or reality check, lol). I always have a lot of doubt in myself when it comes to my art.
I'll be doing the cover this week, & I'll be sure to share it here with an update! :)

I don't really understand how this isn't attention seeking if you posted and you were already taking the job.
Posting "should I do it" describing the job......but knowing you're doing it?
I dunno. That's bragging to me.
But that's just me and you can take my opinion for whatever you want. I learned humility the hard way. Enjoy the experience...maybe it will do something for your art and career path.

I didn't "know I was doing it". I was offered to but was unsure if I was going to do it. I didn't take it until this morning...

Your abilities as an artist should not prevent you from taking on this project, but only the correct motiviation for doing so. That motivation could be money (for which there clearly isn't much offered) or exposure that could lead to future and more profitable projects. Ultimately, the decision is all yours.

.......you yourself posted that you were really only looking for positive encouragement. (Attention seeking behavior). My 4 year old nephew does the same thing:
Look at me! I'm the fastest one! I'm better than you! Aunt katie I'm the fastest runner in the world! See me? Look how fast I am. I'm so much faster than you! Looooooook at meeeeeeeeeee!
Even after you beat him in a race he still says he's faster.
This is exactly the same thing.
Look at me.

Seriously? Where is this coming from? He asked for opinions, not "atta-boys."
Wow, you are so mad. One of our members has an opportunity to make some money using his skills and the first thing that comes to mind is "SHOWOFF MUCH?" What are you, 10? Give the kid some advice or don't say anything. What you're talking about isn't even what the thread is about.

That implies I was looking for either a "You can do it!" or "Do you really think you're skilled enough to take this on?" kind of response. I made the thread hoping it would be the former, yes, but who wouldn't prefer good feedback to that which would discourage them?

I like when you pretend that you're not an asshole like the rest of us.
