View Full Version : Do you think the tone would be right for 2012?

As I understand it, they're mixing elements of the 80's show with elements of the 2003 show. Now, I'm a bit on the fence about this for a few reasons, though I can probably see why they did it. I'm just not sure how well it'd work for today's audience.
Don't get me wrong, the 80's show was a great show.... but it was a great show FOR the 80's. It holds up fine due to nostalgia, but TV animation has made leaps and bounds since then in terms of tone and story development.
I just don't think the 80's show's tone would work for a modern day audience. I understand it won't be TOO goofy, but it'll be goofier than the 2003 series. But, let's face it, the 2003 series could be pretty goofy. So that makes me a bit worried that people won't accept the new show because of its lighter tone in 2012. The trend seems to be going for more mature and serious shows (especially with The Dark Knight making tons) So my question is... do you think it'd be accepted by a modern audience as a show that has a larger focus towards comedy instead of action?

Who said it was going to be goofy? From what I've read it's going to be like 2k3, a perfect blend.
Also, take into consideration this is a friggin' kids show. Kids won't care either way.

I seem to recall reading that it was going to be more light-hearted than 2k3. I just don't recall WHERE I read it.

I don't think we know the tone at all. I wouldn't mind it being similar in tone to the 2007 TMNT movie, which had the right amount of action and character.
That with a better stories would be fine.

Considering what network will be airing the show, I don't think it should have much problem finding an audience. Kids seem to watch just about anything. Have you seen the crap on nick?

Well... Avatar was good... Can't honestly think of another one that's close to it in terms of quality though... so I see your point.

Perhaps I am being too cynical. Kids aren't as stupid as some people would think. I'm confident most kids can handle some complexity and serious action. But the decision is not mine to make. I don't see anything wrong with blending humor with action. There are plenty of comedic shows that work well now so perhaps it wouldn't be such a terrible thing. Personally though, I would like to see more grit than humor.

With Nickelodeon, I think they can take a few risks. I don't mind if they use humor like the ones used in The Penguins of Madagascar, but I don't think TMNT will be too goofy. It's TMNT, not SpongeBob SquarePants. The Last Airbender had its funny and goofy moments, but it still had a solid storyline and great action. I'm expecting the new TMNT series to be just like that. I think it will be a blend of both cartoons, but also the comics and movies. So we may get it all in one cartoon. I'm hoping.

Yes,... why not? Ben 10 is funny and serius at same time...
I think Nick will find the perfect middle point between serius and goofy TMNT show!

This question makes no sense. I mean, Brave and the Bold and other goofier shows are pretty popular these days.

But then there are also more serious shows like Young Justice, Sym-Bionic Titan, Thundercats (Not yet out, but we can guess the tone base don the trailer), and Avatar the Last Airbender. All of these had their fun moments like the 2003 show but are, for the most part, more action than comedy. But I do see your point about the Brave and the Bold. I tend to forget about that incarnation of Batman, mostly due to my love of the 90's show.

My advice: read the comics.
You're going to be seriously let down if you're hoping for a Nickelodeon cartoon to be "more serious and violent". Personally, that's the exact opposite of what I want from this show. I just want it to be whacky and fun, and I want the comics to be more on the violent side.
I'd talk about the movie too, but I don't give a sh*t about that anymore.

A cartoon made by Nick airing on a kids block won't be violent at all.
Hell, it might even be more toned down than the 4kids series was.

Then unless you're into masochism you should probably get out of the cartoon watching business. Now.

Well, what determines "violent" and what determines "action"? Because Avatar: the Last Airbender was a pretty action-packed show, and even had some character deaths so I don't think ruling out an action show is the right way to go... But violent--as in killing left and right--will not happen, yeah.

I think there will be that cool ninja violence that we've been seeing on the 2k3 series. As much as I don't like that show so much, the action scenes were not that bad. Besides, that series is supposed to premiere on Nicktoons. So if it's going to be on Nicktoons, wouldn't you expect something similar for the new 2k12 series? I don't really care about how much violence will be put on the show. I just want a show that's fun and awesome to watch. I like a little dose of humor with a lot of ninja violence. I like the comics, but I'm not looking for gory violence. I don't think TMNT meant to be like that as it became popular. It's like when hardcore fans of Genesis loved Peter Gabriel as the lead singer, and never liked how the band went mainstream with Phil Collins. If so, I will call the extreme violence lovers Team Gabriel, while I fall in Team Collins. Everyone has their own opinion. Still, I'm excited for this show. I can't wait.:tgrin:

I know I was. I can remember as a kid thinking the OT got a little ridiculous at times. Dragon Ball Z used to bug me when I was younger, as well, because I thought there was too much goofy stuff in it. It wasn't until I was older and had a better understanding of the property that I enjoyed all aspects of it.

if it is at the same tone as 2k3 or OT then it is fine with me. i just dont want to be even more toned down than OT was. And as i said MOST tmnt fans are not kids ANYMORE! Ok, we were kids when OT started, but now MOST of us are more than 25 years old.

My bad Nines I shouldn't try to speak for everybody, so let me speak for only myself. I think a goofy show will be accepted by the public, but Im not sure if I can Stand something as goofy as some of the OT episodes

I really don't think it will be more toned down than the OT. Television animation has come a long way since the 80s. They seem to be able to get away with more in today's children's cartoons than they could in shows of the 80s.
