Samwise Gamgee as Raphael! This is so cool! And it's funny. If you look on the "TMNT Fantastic Four" thread, I compare Raph to be that Hobbit. Too bad Elijah Wood's not doing Leonardo. That would have been something: Frodo and Sam return as Leo and Raph. I think this means serious business for Nickelodeon. I have never, in my wildest dreams, pictured any film actor like Jason Biggs or Sean Astin portray the voices of characters on these shows. I am so excited!:thyper: Plus, Sean Astin was in 24: Season 5!:tgrin:

Just to add: I never liked Teen Titans or Beast Boy, but Greg Cipes as Michelangelo may be perfect casting. I'm just hoping he doesn't sound too much like Beast Boy. If he does, his voice has got to be deeper, and a little bit New Yorkan.

I know Cripes better as his character on the HBO series "Deadwood." He played the teenage kid that traveled with Kristen Bell.

I saw about Sean and Greg on Rob Paulsen's Facebook, but I can't find the Hoon Lee news anywhere. Did a search on the name, and all I can find is that he's (if it's the right guy) Richard on 'Fringe'. Sound about right, Jester?

I'm excited for this news. Sean will be iffy as Raph maybe, but I have no doubt that Greg Cipes can pull off Mikey. It's...it's perfect in my head I think. Though it'll deped on how he's writte I suppose.

I can't wait till we find out who's Shredder! It's gonna be hard to top the awesome (though different) performances we've had for the guy in the previous toons though.

I know Sean Astin fine. so he's going to be Raph. Interesting. Cipes, I'd seen the name before, and now I know. He was BB on Teen Titans. I hope he doesn't make Mikey sound too childish, though. I couldn't imagine Mikey with a prepubescent voice.

I sat and listened to a bunch of interviews after Biggs was cast and as long as Leo is written well and Biggs takes the role seriously he has a good voice for Leo.

As for Astin, maybe they are finally going to have a more Mirage version of Raphael were he doesn't sound 40 years old... *laughs* (not I didn't love Raph in 2k3 but it was be an interesting change!)

I take it back. I could see him voicing Mikey. The character from Ben 10 convinced me. I've only seen Ben 10 while in Japan on occasion, though, ironically, so never heard what he sounded like in English. lol

I went to a Voice Panel at a con a few years ago. I think it was ComicCon in '09, but I don't remember enough to be sure. Anyway, he was one of the panelists and he was...not on top of his game, let's just say.

Why so negative? First of all, Astin is an actor, let him show us his range before we jump to conclusions. Secondly, does he HAVE to be "Miragey"?

As for Biggs... same thing I said about Sean: He's an actor. Biggs normally plays "awkward pushover" type of characters, but the voice quality is certainly there if you ask me. And even if he did want to do his same old schtick for Leo, the producers and voice directors aren't gonna let him run wild.

This is awesome news. I like Sean Astin and feel he'll do a good job as he was very good in Lord of the Rings. As for Cipes, I loved him as Beast Boy, so I think he'll do good work. I don't know who Hoon Lee is, but everyone is saying good things about him, so I'm not too concerned.

I'm ambivalent about Cipes as Mikey. His voice is odd to me. Hopefully I'll be able to get used to him as Mike. Interesting how Nick opted for "name actors" as two of the Turtles (personally I consider Rob one as well, as prolific as he is!).

Well, come fall next year we'll finally get to hear them on screen! :D

I'm confused. I'd say Biggs and Asten were "name" actors. Sure Rob and Greg are more or less well know voice actors, I think of on-screen actors when I think "name actors." Then again, that's just me.

I'm pretty sure the on-screen actors were who he was referring to, and the parenthetical note is there to say that he considers Rob a "big name" as well because of his nigh legendary status. If it wasn't for Welker, the guy'd probably be no. 1 in his field.

I was born in 1989 and my first intro to the turtles was the 80's show, so age doesn't really matter in that regard. :ohwell:

I don't see why you're trying to negate my post, I was simply observing that they were in the "target age" right at the height of Turtle-mania, so it's more likely that they, as opposed to the older Sean Astin, would have been fans as kids.

Forgive me. I'll be the negative hater on this one.

Sean Astin as Raphael....really? I'm sorry but...I can buy Sean Astin as a lot of things...leader of the Goonies, the kinda sweet-hearted yet troublesome kid in Toy Soldiers...but I simply can't buy him as a badass or as someone with an attitude (which to me is what Raphael is all about). And I never cared for Lord of the Rings at all (always hated those flicks, just found them so overlong and incredibly boring).

So first they cast Jason Biggs, a guy who always plays the same awkward, kinda 'geek mixed with Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate' (yeah, I know he played him in the Broadway play...that's cause that's him, it's not acting) in every movie I've seen him in (Loser, Saving Silverman, the American Pie flms)and yet...I'm supposed to buy this guy as a leader...

Now I'm supposed to buy Sean Astin as either a tough guy, a guy with a sarcastic tone (that I buy, not seemingly forced or awkward), or both?

And the Beast Boy guy as Mikey...so he might be more annoying than he was in the CGI TMNT flick...

Nickelodeon. I hate your guts and I hate your soul...if you had one...

But hey...it's cool that everyone likes it. Not gonna rain on everyone's parade. And I know that I need to see them in action first before I judge it...meaning I know I must wait for the show to be finished and released to pass any final judgement after watching it. But as a fan of the turtles...I just had to be honest and find nothing about this (or even the direction of the show, whether it be the 16 or so old April, to the whole Splinter/daughter stuff and 'The Krangs') to be nothing more than worrisome.

But hey...there had to be lasso (just rhyme it) in the group...so I'll be the one :tgrin:

Yeah, I agree. In the OT, Raph wasn't seen as a badass at all. He was snarky and sarcastic, but hardly badass. I think Sean can pull it off, but it'll depend on the direction Nick wants it to go. They'll either go the sarcastic/snarky route or the tough guy route.

And as for Mikey's VA, he wasn't in the Turtles CGI movie if that's what you're talking about.

Well you of all would know...you wouldn't want him to get...sarcastic! :P

But Rob Paulsen (I can agree with you that first and foremost he's a solid voice actor) had a nice, sarcastic tone. Like I said before, I thought of Raphael as either badass or at least with an attitude...and I thought Rob did bring at least a little bit of attitude in his smartass-ness, including the very early spisodes of the 80's cartoon. I did buy him saying things like 'does a phrase, go suck a lemon...' and etc. Even the red-sky episodes, Paulsen did well when they tried to go a little more into the serious/more action-ready route.

But I haven't seen really anything of Sean Astin's that brings to mind that kind of role/performance...and from what I understand in the new show that want to bring both a toughness AND sarcastic touch to the character...so that's what I meant. But again, I know I have to see the cartoon before I can really judge it. Perhaps he can surprise me, at least I hope.

If you're going to bad mouth what I and many others (maybe not on here; I don't feel that too many medievalists like myself are around) consider the mecca of all fantastical works, you should know that The Lord of the Rings is a book first and foremost. Just making the distinction. The films are blockbusters by themselves, but there's big differences.

If you're going to bad mouth what I and many others (maybe not on here; I don't feel that too many medievalists like myself are around) consider the mecca of all fantastical works, you should know that The Lord of the Rings is a book first and foremost. Just making the distinction. The films are blockbusters by themselves, but there's big differences.

I agree with you, not just because I'm biased about LotR. :D For a younger Raphael (and as far as we know, the Turtles are most likely going to act or sound like the youngest we've seen adapted,) I think Astin is going to work just fine...I can't wait to hear some lines from him as Raphy.

Lame. I still to this day can't understand why people feel the need to compare LotR to Star Wars. Is the only reason because they both have a title that begins with "The Return of the....?" They are completely different, were born in different decades (LotR pub.1953), not to mention the fact that LotR was a book with insurmountable story telling, character development, etc. It was probably the biggest fantasy epic in the last century - in my opinion and quite obviously others. Tolkien was a true genius, if you looked at what he created out of bits and pieces of random European folk-lore.

I can't buy Sean Astin voicing Raph. Because, whenever Raph is talking, I'm going to be picturing Sean. It's going to be very distracting, and a totally stupid move. Why not just have Rob Paulsen reunite with his old character???? That would have been a smart move.

If you don't like his Raph when you hear it, that's fine. But to say you can't watch with out picturing Sean, and you haven't even got a sound clip yet.... that's kinda silly. Expect some flak.

I didn't mean to be disrespectful to Sean Astin, he's actually in my top ten of favorite actors of all time, but because I have a face to go with a voice, I'm going to have that image in my head. When watching TMNT, I made damn sure not to check out who the voice actors for the Turtles were, it kind of takes away that magic or whatever. But, whenever Casey or April talked, all I saw was Chris Evans and Sarah Michelle Gellar. I'll give it a shot. I couldn't picture Hugo Weaving as Megatron, but he did pretty damn good, didn't recognize his voice at all, but it's too hard to tell at the moment with the Turtles. I'm a much hard core fan of the Turtles than I am of Transformers, and except for The Next Mutation stuff, I've been pretty much excited for everything that had to do with the Turtles, until now........

I don't know much of Biggs. I know he did the American Pie movies, but I totally avoided them things liked the plague, so I haven't a clue how he would sound. It's a hit or miss with me and actors as voice overs. In Cars, I loved Paul Newman, not so much Owen Wilson.......Hell, I loved it back in the day with Corey Feldman voicing Donetello, today, not so much. I liked the voice work in 2k3 and the 2007 movie far more!

I really don't want to think that this is bad. I feel like I find the negative everywhere: movies getting bad reviews, albums getting bad reviews, etc. Is it me, or does anyone not really like anything made in this day today?:tconfuse:

Sean Astin doesn't look like a tough guy at all. But Sean Astin doesn't even look like a teddy bear that goes on missions to help kids (Special Agent Oso joke :tlol:). He may not look like a tough guy, but maybe he can PLAY a tough guy. That's probably why Nick hired him in the first place. Watch the clip from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - There's a scene where Samwise is attacking orcs, and he is trying to rescue Frodo at Cirith Ungol in Mordor. I swear. Sean could pull this off. I've also seen him on the fifth season of 24 . He was tough - emotionally.

But hey. If you don't like it, that's fine. :tsmile: But saying that "You're life is over!" because of a certain actor is melodramatic. Already, it feels like you don't want me to be excited. I don't want that.:tsad: I'm looking forward to this show. Give it a chance. Maybe you'll like it, too.:tgrin:

This bud's for you :D ...and I did think of Mikey when I saw Lord of the Rings, which wasn't MY cup of tea on any of 3 flicks.

but I understand that I gotta watch the new show before I can judge it 100%...granted, I did like Toy Soldiers with Sean Astin, and I can gladly gang up on Jason Biggs for Leo as well. It's just when I close my eyes and hear their voices, it's very, very, very hard to picture Leo and Raph coming from those mouths.

For example...I can very clearly hear someone like Kevin Dillon's (from Entourage, the 1988 flick The Blob, etc.) voice coming out of Raphael very easily, and so on and so forth.

But hey, that's just me.

Something just dawned on me. I'm watching Dark Knight as I type, and it dawned on me: How many people said, "Heath Ledger is the Joker? That guy's too much of a pretty boy to be the Joker. It'll never work!" And now Ledger is praised as the best Joker ever. (I still think it's Luke Skywalker, but what do I know.) Maybe Biggs and Astin will be awesome...like Heath.

Nope. No Academy Awards for them. Still, as much as I liked Heath Ledger's performance, Jack Nicholson was still spot on. He should have gotten an Oscar for playing the Joker, along with Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn from Spiderman.:tgrumble: Ledger did great, but he was only given the Oscar because he was dead.

Just to add: Mark Hamill has the best Joker voice in the history of Batman reincarnations!:tgrin:

I think you're right about the over exaggeration aspect...although he is probably my favorite Joker.I liked both. I think it depends on what you're in the mood for. I sorta like Jack's portrayal because he was insane, but funny too. He was threatening, but humorous. Sorta like Cesar Romero was humorous but threatening. I liked the fact that with JN's portrayal, we were able to learn about his character and figure out what made him tick and why he was the Joker. Ledger's Joker, not so much and that bugged me. Heath was good at being insane and dangerous, but I just wanted to know what made him tick.

Like I said, depending on my mood, I sometimes before Ledger and other times, Jack, but more often than not, I seem to lean more towards Jack.

As for the animated series, only one I watched regularly was Batman TAS. Joker was cool on there, and didn't hit me that it was Mark Hamil.

That was his appeal to me. I loved how he kept changing his story about his face scars so that we really never could quite figure him out. Though Alfred basically summed him up nicely, he just want's to watch the world burn. It was brilliant creating such a joker who really has no weakness that batman can threaten him with.

It was a breath of fresh villain and nice to see one who hadn't already been done in hundreds of movies before

I apologize for saying that about Heath Ledger, Spitfire. Truth is, the Joker in that film, to me, was just psychotic. I felt the Joker had more of a humorous and crazy side from the 1989 Batman film. I also looked at the list of actors nominated that year. I guess Heath Ledger deserved it.

Anyways, we better stay on topic. We've been having fun talking about the Joker portrayls, we're not even thinking about the portrayls of Raph, Mike, and Splinter.:tlol:
