That this reintroduction of the Turtles to the mainstream is going to be another explosion the likes of the 80's-90's Turtles popularity?

I mean, yeah the 2k3 was cool and all. And it was awesome to see them back on our shelves, and on TV. But, itjust didn't feel like it had that same oomph. Neithe r did the 2007 movie. But with the Nick cartoon, both new toylines, the movie, the upcoming Alamo Filmhouse Ninja Turtles movie deal going on, etc etc....

...I just have a good feeling it's going to BOOM the likes of which we haven't seen since we were children (those old enough to remember).

Anyone else?

Nope. I'm confident it will be large, probably moreso than 2k3, but it will never touch the OG's level of popularity. Nothing like it had come before. Now, that's not the case. Kids these days have seen plenty of anthropomorphic animals fighting (most of which were inspired by the TMNT to an extent, I imagine).

I don't think anything can regain the mania that was Turtles in the 90's. But, if this does, I'll be very pleasantly surprised.

I wouldn't be too surprised if it got something more close to Avatar: The Last Airbender in popularity, but I haven't seen anything as popular as TMNT ever since Pokemon (Yugioh was close, but no cigar).

Impossible. No kids show will get that popular again, just because kids have changed since those days. A lot of the time, today's youth will go straight from watching Nick Jr. to playing Call of Duty.

Anywho... what's this Alamo Filmhouse business you're talking about?

Yeah, what is this Alamo Filmhouse. I thought Platinum Dunes was going to produce the new film.

Anyway: whenever something is remade, nothing can beat the original. Still, Batman: The Animated Series seemed to change that. That was big, and so was The Batman and Batman: Brave and the Bold. So like the OT turtle series, the 2k12 may become the biggest thing since that, but not as big as what it was. Still, this show looks like it's going to get a lot of PR (public relations - not Power Rangers). :tlol: Take that Supah Ninjas!

I don't think so. With Nickelodeon behind it, it'll probably be more popular than the 2k3 show, which kinda flew under the radar. (I'm still surpised at the number of people who aren't even aware of its existence). But the original series' popularity was just insane. Nearly entire aisles at toy stores were dedicated to TMNT at one point. Everyone was aware of TMNT and loved it. Perhaps there was some mind control in the form of subliminal messages?

That's what I was saying. The original was bigger, and this new one may do well, too.:tsmile: The 2k3 might have been the second animated series for the TMNT, but the 2k12 one may be the second popular animated series of TMNT history. We'll just have to find out ourselves. But this sounds like a strong effort for Nickelodeon.:tgrin:

I'd like to imagine turtles getting big again but I don't see it happening. Kids have even shorter attention spans now. Turtles will blip on their radar for a very short period of time. I see it being popular for a year and then fading away again. Not to say the show won't last very long I just don't see it being huge for very long. Though a good movie could keep it in the public eye for much longer which is why they should be targeting more then just kids.

The 80's/90's kid crowd will still profess that the OT was the best ever and no other turtles cartoon will ever be able to top it. No matter how awesome the new series is they will find stupid **** to complain about. Like how Shredder can actually out think a watermelon or Bebop and Rocksteady not being in it, because they're the be all end all of TMNT characters to those people.

I don't think so because in recent years Nickelodeon hasn't been worth "beep".
I am sorry but this network has not been the same since the days of Kenan and Kel, Angry Beavers, Pete and Pete and Snick. All the shows they have now a rubbish and if that is what truly appeals to kids these days then that is just sad. Plus based on what we've been shown of the new show so far and their intended plans this show is gonna have more hate then the 1998 zilla flick

If the new show is half as entertaining as iCarly then we have a winner on our hands.

History has already shown us that Nick really does care about the core TMNT fan-base by having the invite-only "Pizza Box" fiasco, letting IDW write a PG-13 comic not related to their own Nick plots/story lines, scheduling tons of new figures to be released including a Classics line, giving the movie a green light, etc.

Even if the new show isn't that great, I think we win in the end. To answer the main question of this thread, I do think the toon is going to do well and we are going to experience a re-surgance of TMNT, surpassing that of the 2k3. I wouldn't be surprised if it *almost* became as big as it was in the 80s/90s. To those who doubt so surely: do you have a crystal ball? You deal out the end-all pretty quickly.

This is exactly why fans of the original show will never give the new show a chance. Simply because it is not the show they grew up watching, they feel the new stuff is crap by default.

Thank you, Stryker. I agree with you. If you think about it, Nickelodeon had its share of crap back then. Besides Rocko's Modern Life, there was also CatDog, Ren and Stimpy, and that other show, Aaahh! Real Monsters. I do miss some of the old shows, but I rather have MTV back as Music TV rather than "Reality TV." Nickelodeon doesn't bother me as much. It's Disney Channel that needs to get their act together.

I miss the way Disney Channel used to be. It was more like a station with programming aimed at families with some children programming tossed in too. Now it's aimed at tweens and teens. Nickelodeon, imo, has the same problem.

There are still a bunch of family shows on disney but the money makers are the tweenish shows.

It's been like this for a long time and there's nothing wrong with it at all. The Jersey and Famous Jett Jackson weren't high art either.

The shows aren't marketed towards your group. That doesn't mean they're doing something wrong.

I've actually made a thread (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=32292)about how fads haven't been as big and a thread (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=33491)about how the new show is going to be huge.

I think its hard to know just how big something is if you aren't a kid since you don't even realize how big some stuff is, Hannah Montana definitely seemed pretty fad like even if it was for girls. Transformers while not being new has definitely been pretty damn popular.

Now for the new show, like I've mentioned before the new show is going to be huge, fairly close if not as big as the original TMNT fad. Nick is the #1 kids network, no matter what show they air its going to get great ratings and lots of kids watching it. Just look at Power Rangers, the series had been in decline in ratings for years and is now as popular as its ever been since the fad died. And this is also considered one of the worst seasons of PRs so even if the quality isn't amazing it will get viewers, counting TMNT is Viacoms own property unlike PRs they will market it even more than they did PRs.

That was the trend for the past few years in Nick/Disney and even CN but all three networks seem to have decided to also want some of the action of boys, Disney bought Marvel, Nick got PRs and TMNT, CN got DC shows and Thundercats among many other examples, we're seeing a ton of action shows being made for all three networks.

:tgrumble:Stryker, I'm not thinking about the money they're making.:tgrumble: I'm thinking about the plotlines of these shows. So far their shows, with the exception of Phineas and Ferb, stink. Come on! Shake It Up? I can't believe how bad that is.:tlol: Seriously. I only liked That's So Raven when it used to be on. I know money is important, but I usually like to think about the quality of the product. Disney would do anything to put out a show, whether it's good or bad. At this point, their TV shows are bad, and they're still getting money for it.

So that's why I think Disney Channel needs to get their act together, because their shows are worse than Nickelodeon's. You may not have to agree with me. That's just the way I feel. So I'm not being dumb. I'm just not thinking in terms of money.:twink: That's all.

Also, you're right. I'm older now. Disney Channel's not intended for me anyway. I still pay attention to the theatrical Disney or Pixar films, though. In fact, I still like Disney World.:tgrin:

Spike TV could work since they play a lot of CSI and Star Trek: The Next Generation. But MTV2? No way. After what MTV has become today with that Jersey Shore and Teen Mom crap, no way are these four dudes getting a show on any channel that's meant to play music videos. I know you're talking about MTV2, but it's like VH1 Classic, but not the official VH1. It's still part of MTV. So Spike could work. :tsmile: But I wish the show would be a one hour series played on Nick at Nite. That would be cool. Nick's first superhero action/comedy/drama series. Animation never works on MTV, for most things anyways. It usually doesn't last very long. Spike has had some animated series but they've been crap. Ren and Stimpy, Stripperella, and Gary the Rat.

An adult turtles toon series is nice in theory but it'd work better as an animated DVD movie, like DC has been doing.

I agree. There should be an animated film in the style of Batman: Gotham Knight, where it focuses on the first 3 issues of the TMNT. That would be cool. Then the turtles would look like the ones from the comics with the red bandanas. :tsmile: Later, that could create a new animated series in the future with the same actors, and this time, with the turtles dressed in their colored bandanas. I don't know why everyone keeps getting a hard on about having an "adult" ninja turtles cartoon. How exactly will that help the franchise?

The audienc for such a show would be so small that the cost of producing it versus the returs would kill it right there. I mean, what do you think will happen? That all these grown up turtles fans will just automatically convert to love of a animated turtles where they kill and swear and (god forbid) have sex or something? That won't happen because of two things:

1) the vast majority of people who have ever known of the turtles know of them as a goofy cartoon. Any nostalgia that exists for lay fans in the mainstram population would be destroyed by anything less than goofy turtles.

2)Most people who grew up on the turtle could care less whether or not the turtles exist. They have lives and families and jobs and the turtles are so far off the radar that you can't even count them in a target audience.

I knew the comic before anything. The closest thing to the comic that will EVER happen is movie 1 and the 2003 toon. That's perfectly fine.

Any hope of this franchise surviving means you HAVE to get today's kids excited...and how do you do that? The same way it got popular the first time. Cartoony likable goofy turtles.

And who is best poised to do that? Nickelodeon.

Well Batman was a goofy as hell tv show, and then Batman 89 came out and showed everyone otherwise. Then the fourth movie of that series ruined everything, and Batman Begins came out and set the record straight once again.

Just because something is well liked one way, doesn't mean a game-changer can't come along and be just as well-received but in a different way.

That being said, I feel that only the comics and movies should really strive for a more mature tone. I want this cartoon to be as goofy/wacky as it pleases.

You can put Batman on whatever pedestal you wish, but the fact is that Adam West show is just plain dumb. Sure it has it's charm, but it's totally childish. Even almost 50 years later, people still remember it and reference it (just like people will always say Cowabunga when TMNT is brought up), but now people also look at Batman as a bad-ass action hero because the film makers weren't afraid to pull from his original source material: the comic books. TMNT should be no different.

I'm all on board for however Nick wants to spin this (early info looks very promising). I couldn't have more love for some of their original stuff: Avatar the Last Airbender (show, not movie) and Zim are great examples of what the network is capable of. Let's hope the show-runners and writers know what they're doing and legitimately care about the franchise.

I didn't say they had to curse or show a lot of blood. Let's say we actually get a new series, COMPLETELY like the comics (not the 2k3 one) but in the style of a Bruce Timm cartoon. Also, if there happens to be a live action/ CGI show in the future, it should be filmed like the show Smallville or something that contains comic book violence. I might have to disagree. Everything doesn't have to be goofy. In fact, TV shows have changed today. I think kids want more action and adventure than comedy. Look at Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Maybe the new show will be like that.

They don't have to be THAT goofy, do they? To me, the term "Funny" may sum up the new series. Reboot was funny, but it had great action.

You're missing the point.

If you make a TMNT cartoon that is too over the heads of kids it will die. Period. You wanna talk about reboot? And how long did that show last?

"Mature" ninja turtles cartoons only appeal to a very small dedicated core fanbase. Again, the cost to do something like that wouls vastly outweigh any return.

Let me give you a quick profile of this core fan:

Male
In his 20's
Low to low middle income
May be in college
Miniscule disposable income
May still live with parents
Probably a little geeky/nerdy

This kind of core person cannot support the kind of revenue a show would need to survive for a good run. Advertisers would probably be on board at first, but once the determined that their return on investment wasn't ther they'd drop off like flies. Nielson ratings would be atrocious. IT WOULD DIE. And it would be a horrible shameful death.

Again. You NEED the kids to be excited. Kids in the 10-15 age range that live at home in middle to upper income levels will have an ass load of disposable income from their parents. ANY new toon HAS to appeal to this target audience. It can be goofy and still give the characters true representations....but it has to be goofy.

I don't want it to be over their heads. I just want it to be good like the comics, with no blood. It's not the adults I'm just thinking about, but also the kids. Don't worry.:twink: I care.:tsmile:

I do want to ask on this forum, though. How goofy is this show going to be? That makes me worry. I don't want the show to end up like a Spongebob or Big Time Rush show.:tsad: I want it to be the best since the 80's toon.

Just to add: Reboot actually had 4 seasons. The only problem with the show was it ended with a cliffhanger. It has been recently released on DVD, and I still enjoy the series. Maybe it wasn't that popular, but I know it's still liked by fans.:tsmile:

I'll tell ya one thing... with the whole... 'villians love to chase Mikey' and we see him running past them.... yeah... Mikey's gonna be the show's buttmonkey again...

I don't really mind. I found little Enzo annoying a bit when I watched Reboot recently. But still, he's a great character. So is Mikey. Hopefully he'll have his smart moments on the show.:tsmile:

My real concern is how goofy are the other turtles going to be? I don't want to the think that the leader, brains, and hothead of the group are not going to act like morons. I'm confident they're not going to be. But I'm still concerned. Does anybody know?:tconfuse:

Good job giving the ENTIRE show that hasn't even been made yet a running theme.

Waiting to see the final product. I dunno, so far I'm not feelin' this. I loved the first few 2K3 seasons, for some reason nothing I've heard about the new show has me excited other than the fact that there's actually going to be another Turtles show.

My prediction? It'll hit somewhere below the success of 2K3. I hate to say it, but I think I'm losing faith. The early 2000s had a lot of hope, a lot of promises, and a lot of momentum for the franchise. And literally NOTHING came anywhere close to what was promised, or even the potential...

Vol. 4? A meandering, sleepy vanity project with mediocre art that resolved almost nothing in terms of storylines that dragged on for years and priced itself into extinction while completely and purposefully ignoring any and every request for what FANS wanted to see in a TMNT book.

2K3? Started strong as a nice mix of the old 'toon and the comics, but quickly fell into a self-referential, slapstick-y quagmire of recycled jokes, one-dimensional characters and increasingly-oddball plots.

Dreamwave comic? Anybody remember this? They hyped it to hell and it was awesome for like, the 5 minutes it existed.

Cartoon DVDs? Both the old and new shows' DVDs were half-assed, with missing or incorrectly-placed episodes, lame or nonexistent Extras, and blatant gouging like the OT Season 7 "Four Slices" fiasco.

Toys? Always started off well but all heat quickly disappeared. Nothing anywhere close to the phenomenon of the old toy line and its never-ending popularity, despite the fact that the new toys were, I felt, rather good quality.

2007 movie? Ultimately a divisive piece of material that was supposed to usher in a new era of TMNT popularity, but ended up being either "a piece of sh*t" or "just ok" depending on who you ask.

Video games? Every one of them ended up being mediocre and repetitive, and even though each "had its moments" they just don't have the classic, timeless feel of the old TMNT games that people still play. People won't be playing the new ones in 20 years. Anybody pop in Battle Nexus on Gamecube lately? I doubt it.

Forever War? This probably pisses me off more than anything. They PROMISED, and they lied. I don't care about "circumstances", you never promise if you can't deliver.

Tales of the TMNT and Turtles Forever were pretty good, and probably the best things to come from the "new TMNT renaissance", but hardly representative of a new Golden Age.

I don't mean to be a downer, and in fact I hope I'm wrong and the new show and everything brings in a bazillion new fans. In truth, though, I don't think it'll ever be like it was. I think it's our job as fans to keep the franchise truly alive and vital, ultimately, just like we always have, because no matter who the rights ever end up belonging to, the people who get paid to produce this stuff care less about the TMNT, and less about giving us what we want, and more about the quick buck. They bring it back, they water it down, we all complain it's not what we want, they pass it off to someone else, and all the while people on the internet come up with stories and art far more entertaining and fulfilling than what we pay to see. It's depressing.

I think the TMNT will always survive in some way. But thrive? I want to believe, but........

No one can say how goofy it's gonna be because I doubt anyone has seen enough of it to say for sure. However, what I believe this is going to be is an Avatarish incarnation with just a little more slapstick and a younger target audience. This is made for that golden demographic of live at home kids with disposable income.

It's not going to be a huge hit. It'll have its run but it won't last (I'm predicting) even as long as the 2K3 version.

There has to be a old toonish revival. There are VERY few core fans who became fans on anything besides the old toon. I'm not saying that they aren't out there....I mean, I'm one of them.....but the vast majority were little scrappers who fell head first into old toon mania. I'd bet my next two paychecks that if that toon hadn't been how it was, more than half this board's members wouldn't even remember the turtles.

Actually, I wouldn't mind if the new show had 5 or 6 seasons. I don't know. I'm hoping it's big like the OT, but that it won't reach up to 10 seasons. The new incarnations can never beat the originals. Hopefully, I'm thinking that the OT was the first Star Trek, and that this one is Star Trek: The Next Generation.:tlol: I don't want to predict how long this new series will stay on or something. I mean, Batman: The Animate Series went on for only a few years, and that has become a huge success.:tsmile: We'll just have to wait and see.

You're probably right considering this board is BASED on the OT. The board itself wouldn't exist.

LOL. I only give up my paycheck if I'm wrong.

I was using this board as a microcosmic example. I realize that it's based on the old toon. However it does attract a large number of core fans. But even if you take all message boards and the fandom as a whole.....very few would say that their fandom started outside the old toon.

How old were most of todays fans when that was going on? 3? 4? 5?

See my point?

Yeah, I mean I much prefer other versions of TMNT, like the first movie and most of the Archie book, but I got into TMNT from the old show, even though I watch a lot of it now and just cringe.

Actually, I got into TMNT at school because kids had the read-along comics with the audio cassette, based on the first few episodes, and I'd never heard of it so I went home and watched it and fell in love with it. I knew there were comics, but no stores around here had the Mirage ones, so I always thought (until I was like 10 or so) that the Archie books were the "real" comics until I started reading Wizard a lot. I liked the Archie book because to an 8-10 year old it was a more-mature version of the cartoon.

For myself, and I bet a lot of others, even if we prefer a different version, we subconsciously compare each version of the Turtles to the old cartoon. It still draws fans. My 12-year old niece got into TMNT a couple years ago from YouTube; shockingly, I had nothing at all to do with it, and was amazed that she had searched out and watched a lot of the old show and liked it. She also kinda liked Next Mutation, but leave her alone, she's a kid.

Point being, the old show is always gonna have the most staying power no matter what comes down the pike.

I agree. Still, new incarnations can be successful, too. Just . . . well . . . not as big as it was during its time.
