Title says it all. What are the rarest carded TMNT figures. Variations included. Top ten...or just whatever figures you think are rare. I know most of the sixth series are all rare. Shoate, Triceraton, Scratch ect.
Thoughts?

Supposedly the original four figures with the fanclub forms are rarer. Or so I have heard. Although I have seen a lot of them poping up wih prices from $3.00-$25. Just depends on the day. I think a boxed blimp and technodrome are hard to find. I saw a boxed blimp go for over a hundred on ebay a couple weeks ago.

Speaking in terms of monetary value for MOC figures, (not including vehicles or giant figures) which is largely determined by rarity, the top 10 (lowest to highest) are as follows:
10) Slash-Purple Belt, Yellow "S" ('90 series 3, 2nd release-$53)
9) Leonardo/Raphael/Donatello/Michaelangelo w/ Fan Club forms ('88 series 1-$55 each)
8) Black Belt Boxer Mike ('93 Ninja Action series-$75)
7) Movie Splinter w/ Tooth ('92 series 5, 2nd release-$85)
6) Slash-Purple Belt, Red "S", Mustard Yellow Chest ('90 series 3, 2nd release-$88)
5) Genghis Frog-Yellow Belt ('89 series 2, 1st release-$90)
4) Slash-Purple Belt, Red "S", Bright Yellow Chest ('90 series 3, 2nd release-$105)
3) April O'Neil ('88 series 1-$155)
2) April #3-Orange & Blue, no "Press" ('91 series 4, 1st release-$165)
1) Scratch ('93 series 6-$365)
Prices are based upon issue #126 (April 2003) of Lee's Toy Review.

Well, it isn't just about money, but that is a major indicator of rarity. It's a basic fact in collecting that the rarer the item in question, the more money it's worth. Take a Star Wars: Power of the Force Boba Fett from '95 or '96, for example--if there's two variants on it (i.e., he has semi-circles on his hands instead of full circles, and no emblem on his chest) which is quite rare, the value shoots up to a ridiculous amount. Of course, those are easy to fake. Anyway, unless it's a special case like only a known limited amount of one figure was produced, or there was an irregularity, making it a variant, rarity is hard to determine. Besides, rarity varies from then to now. If it was hard to find one figure back in the day, it might not be so rare now, and vice-versa.

That list is pretty good. However, mags like toyfare and lee's leave out important variations. I think the Ace Duck w/ Pop and Hat off is rarer than most of those.

Lee's lists MOC Ace Duck with Hat off as $38, and MOC Ace Duck with Hat on as $18. So you may be right about that.

Right on--although Ace Ducks are usually found cheaper than most TMNT figures, depending on where you look. As a matter of fact, several price listings in that magazine are dubious--I find some of their listings for SW: Episode 1 figures quite odd. For one of most over-produced lines in recent memory, it sure seems to have some valuable ones ;). For instance, I believe it lists a Darth Maul I bought from a store for $2 MOC as $20. And it even lists a couple Maul variants at a whopping $505! :o

Sorry.. I meant to say Ace Duck w/ Pop Up Display Stand w/ hat off. That is a rare figure...if I recall correctly. Maybe TMNTGal will chime in here. I know she has a vast knowledge of variations.

There are several more figures that are always popular, Movie Star and Metal Mutants for example. There are also many variations out there that most people have never heard about and they're very difficult to aquire.
I found another variation recently. A General Traag with Collector Card. The odd thing about this figure was that Traag did not have the emblem painted on his chest. (Little black circle with the lightning bolt). I though it was pretty cool. :) I'll take a picture if anyone wants to see it.

There was a MOC Metal Head earlier selling at 350.00 USD.
The difference was that some of the special effects hadn't been put on the card in the art. And they drew the wrong weapons on him. Supposedly only a very small handfull ever got made this way becuase they realized the mistake and stopped after a single run was made.

I know i'm a little late on this subject but i need to chime in. I have been collecting TMNT for quite a few years now and in my experiences these are the most rare pieces.
1. Shogun Triceraton (just recently found one and paid only $10 for him MOC)
2. Shogun Shoate (have had a couple over the years, difficult to find)
3. Undercover Turtles (tough to locate but i have had a couple sets of these)
I could add Sumo Turtles, Pop Up Display figures and some more.

yes, don't forget those Winged Leo and Don, they look like gargoyles. Those are impossible to find. I see on the internet that Giant Slam Dunking Don sells for about $750.00. Thats a bit much. Shogun Triceraton and Scratch are valued at about $350.00. Now correct me if I'm wrong but arent their The regular 1988 TMNT figures, then ones with fan club forms and then the rarest with pop up displays? Right? the sumos are pretty rare along with the Giant Mutation turtles and Giant Next Mutations. Hot spot came out with Scratch and not quiet as rare but sells for about $200.00 on eBay. Basically I think what things sell for on eBay is what they are truley worth.
I bet if I put my two 100% mint Gargoyle TMNT figures on ebay I would get $250.00 for them.
Anyone know if they ever came out with the furry Rhazar? I bet hes is worth and arm and a leg.
I think the best way to sell turtles on eBay is in their respective set or series. People like that stuff....

I think that Lee's Toy Review is way off in these pricings.
I've seen some of the Undercover and Winged Warrior Figures go for over $100 on eBay and they don't even have any of the Shogun Figures listed.

If they don't have a pop up display and no fan club form then $10-$15 is a good price for them.

The most I ever paid for an MOC TMNT figure was a General Traag with pop-up display stand for $90..sounds crazy, huh?

Yea..that sounds pretty pricey to me...but then again you just dont see many of those pop ups showing up too often, even on ebay...I have 3 pop ups MOC currently and got them all for pretty good prices i think: Genghis for $15 (w/ ship), Shredder and ROcksteady for $14 each (w/ ship)..my most prciest so far have been Hot Spot @ $38 and a Japanese Leo #60 for $30... :)

Yeah, alot of "regular" people don't even realize the pop-ups are rare..many ebay auctions for pop-ups don't even mention it in the description.I got most of mine for cheap...(traded some Spawn figures for 3 of them).. so I thought I'll pay alot for this one, what the heck? I am still looking for a Rat King and an Ace Duck hat off with popups though...

That doesn't sound that crazy. Somebody else had to bid close to that for it to reach that amount so you weren't the only person thinking about paying that much for it.
And Traag is one of the toughest pop up figures to find so its not like you paid for a common one. I wouldn't have wanted to pay that much for it but if it was in great shape then a couple years from now it will probably look like a bargain.

Well I'm not psychic but I just assumed you bought it through an auction and most likely it was eBay. If I walked into a store and saw prices like that I'd walk out pretty quickly.
I think the Traag is either the rarest or second rarest of the Pop Up Display figures. I heard that him and Leatherhead are the two toughest figures to find with a Pop Up Display and I assume that's correct seeing as how I never see those listed on eBay compared to the other ones.

Seems like it was this way for me when I started collecting figures. It was like early 1991. An original Shredder wasn't rare I guess back then but he seemed to turn up less frequently at the stores. My dad combed shelves looking for that dude for me and finally got me one. My grandma also looked for me one but didn't know my dad got me one, so I soon had two of them!

I'm not really sure why they didn't do it for them. A lot of stuff they did was very confusing.
Those pop up displays were repackaged figures that were still left over from the first couple shipments I believe. So I guess those were too limited to repackage them. I know April wasn't too popular when she was released so they made very few of her. As for the other two I guess they weren't popular either or were so popular that they sold out of the shipments.
That's why the Turtles are more common with pop up displays than the bad guys and friends. More were made of them and they were the most popular.
Now that's what I knew before this site but there are a lot more knowledgeable people on here that probably know more and could tell you for sure. I know I have the basic concept down but I don't know enough to go into detaill.

Oh I see. I understand why the April one wasn't made though. I would have thought they'd have alot of Foot Soldiers leftover though. They could have just been really popular.. Oddly, the first TMNT figure I ever got back in '88 was Foot Soldier.. and the first 2nd series figure I got was Krang. It does make more sense now. So, the number of pop-up display version figures made for each character probably differs drastically. If that's the case, it's possible that there's a very very limited amount of Krangs and Foot Soldiers in existence. But I doubt it..
