View Full Version : TMNT Counterparts

I got to thinking one time, and I started to come up with a list of TMNT counterparts--as in, other teams (such as superhero teams) the TMNT has parallels with. Here's some of my thoughts:
Heroes:
JLA Counterparts:
-Leonardo/Splinter = Superman (all three are leaders)
-Raphael/Casey Jones = Batman (Raph and Batman are the rogues who do things their own way, and Batman and Casey are both vigilantes in their own right)
-Donatello = Martian Manhunter (both have intelligence and advanced mental abilites)
-Michelangelo = The Flash (both are light-hearted and comical)
-April = Wonder Woman (both are strong-willed females)
X-Men Counterparts:
-Leonardo = Cyclops (leader)
-Raphael/Casey Jones = Wolverine (toughguy fighter)
-Donatello = Beast (smart guy)
-Michelangelo = Gambit (fun-loving)
-Splinter = Prof. X (wise old leader)
-April = Storm (strong female)
Star Wars Counterparts:
-Leonardo = Luke Skywalker ("main character" leader-type)
-Raphael/Casey Jones = Han Solo (anti-hero with the heart of gold)
-Donatello = C-3PO/R2-D2 (intelligence, gadgets, less combat-focused, key to victory a lot of times)
-Michelangelo = Chewbacca (maybe not the smartest, but funny and fun-loving, also loyal)
-Splinter = Yoda/Obi-Wan Kenobi [old] (the wise old teacher)
-April = Princess Leia Organa (strong female)
Batman Counterparts:
-Leonardo = Batman (leader, guy who knows what to do)
-Raphael/Casey Jones = Nightwing (skilled guy who does his own thing)
-Donatello = Robin [Tim Drake] (loyal to leader, good with computers)
-Michelangelo = Robin [mix of all three] (no good counterpart, but shares some qualities with all three Robins)
-Splinter = Alfred (wise old caring one)
-April = Batgirl/Oracle (strong, knows her way around a computer)
King Arthur Counterparts:
-Leonardo = King Arthur (leader, "chosen one"-type)
-Raphael/Casey Jones = Sir Lancelot (skilled fighter who's the best at what they do)
-Donatello = Sir Bedivere/Sir Galahad (peaceful, smart type)
-Michelangelo = Sir Gwain/Sir Percival (warm-hearted, almost childish at times)
-Splinter = Merlin (wise old teacher)
-April = Guinevere (prominant female)
Villains:
JLA or DCU:
-Shredder = Lex Luthor (main enemy, businessman facade)
-Krang = Brainiac/Darkseid (brains, "real" main enemy)
X-Men:
-Shredder = Magneto (main enemy)
-Krang = Apocalypse ("real" main enemy)
Star Wars:
-Shredder = Darth Vader (main enemy, makes offer to main hero to join him)
-Krang = Emperor Palpatine ("real" main enemy)
Batman:
-Shredder = The Joker (main enemy, has an endless struggle with hero)
-Krang = Bane/Ra's Al Ghul (intelligent, controls others)
King Arthur:
-Shredder = Mordred (main enemy)
-Krang = Morgan Le Fay (controls "main" enemy)
Anyway, those are just some parallels I drew--anybody else have thoughts on these/matches of their own with other teams?

Krang is like bane?
Well, in the sense that Bane was the major Batman bad guy for a period of time, and controlled (or used to his advantage) other Gotham villains. He was also intelligent.

Bikermice from mars :P
Throttle = Leo
Vinnie = Mikey
Modo = Raph
Charlie = Donnie ( don't freak out now, i know donnie is no female, rabid fans out there :roll: but they're both mr./ms.fix-it-all so, yeah.. :p plus you can compare don's The dark turtle with charlie's Masked Motorcyclist, i'd compare her with april but it doesnt relate to them as much as i felt like donnie. )
Limburger = Shredder
Dr.Karbunkle = Krang
Greasepit = Bebop or Rocksteady

Yeah, I'm not a super-X-Men fan or anything, so I picked the first notable female member that sprang to mind.

I wouldn't compaire Gambit to Mikey, because, well, Gambit is more of a Rogue hero than a fun loving idiot. Sure, he loves fun, but he's more skilled than he leads on. I'd compaire him to Casey actually, instead of Raph and Casey being Wolverine.
Love the Nightwing and Casey/Raph comparison.
EVIL DEAD:
Casey-- Ash
YOUNG JUSTICE:
(There are Repeats)
Leo-- Robin (Surprisingly, both leaders.)
Casey-- Super Boy (Both Badasses who do it their way.)
Donny-- Robin (Both very smart.)
Raph-- Super Boy (Ready to kick some ass.)
Mikey-- (As much as this pains me) Impulse (Both are quick to action before thinking of consequences. Impulse is my favorite, and I hate Mikey, but they are kinda the same.)
VIEW ASKEWVERSE:
Leo-- Dante (Always worrying about the effect of actions and so on.)
Raph-- Randal (Always, ALWAYS quick with the quips and ready to piss off people who rub them the wrong way.)
Donny-- Silent Bob (Silent Bob, as Jay tells it, is an Electical Genius, As is Donny. Silent Bob has his time to shine for 2 minutes per movie and shares his brilliance, Donny is always brilliant.)
Mikey-- Jay (This is obvious, both are complete idiots. One's a Junkie, the other, well, you'd think he was.)
Casey-- Brodie (Smartass, and ready to fight, sudden changes happen to piss them off. And-- both have short fuses.)
RESIDENT EVIL SERIES:
Leo-- Chris Redfield (Strong leaders.)
Raph-- Billy Cohen (Dependable, and quick to kick ass.)
Casey-- Leon S. Kennedy (Reliable, Shoot first, ask questions later.)
Donny-- William Birkin (Ok, Birkin becomes a Tyrant, and EVIL, but both are brilliant.)
Mikey-- Carlos Oliviera (Think they're smooth, but good under pressure.)
Shredder-- Albert Wesker (EVIL! But cool as hell.)

Gundam Wing

Raphael = WuFei (Hothead)
Michelangelo = Duo (Fun Loving one)
Donatello = Quatre (Wise Gentile one)
Casey = Zero System Quatre (Crazy)
April = Cathy/Hilde (Smart and Helpful Women)

Karai = Relena (Strong Female Leader)
Hamato Yoshi = Original Heero Yuy (Martyr)
Foot Clan = OZ (evil organization)
Shredder Elite = Treize Faction/White fang (rebel faction)
Technodrome = Libra (bad-guy supervehicle)
City at War = Eps. from "Birth of queen Relena" to end of series! (Strong female leader gains controll of "evil organization", reforms it, and requires help of the heroes to defeat "rebel faction" and bring about true peace.)
Aqua Teen Hunger force:
Leo/Splinter/Don = Frylock (leader/Smart one)
Raphael = Master Shake(Hothead)
Mike = Meatwad (Dumb but nice one)
Casey = Carl (Hanger on)

I wouldn't draw any counterparts because they dont have any counterparts (the Mirage ones at least). The TMNT are completely unique and not stereotypical archetypes as found in the (old) cartoon.
I mean, c'mon... Mike to Bubbles?? When was the last time Bubbles played a guitar or wrote a poem?? Mike to Peter from GB?? I didn't know Petey could cook. Mike to Tails?? Can Tails take down a platoon of street thugs with his bare hands?? Mike to.. MEATWAD?! Can Meatwad move in and out of places without being seen or heard???
I rest my case.

Actually, while I started this with ALL TMNT incarnations in mind, (meaning, if necessary, you can mix & match versions) the Mirage turtles are total archetypal figures. The idea of TMNT is unique, but their personalities, generally speaking, are not. Leonardo, be it official or unofficial, is the leader figure--Mirage or otherwise. Raphael is the hotheaded toughguy with an attitude--in the old cartoon, he was all attitude, but that's beside the point. Donatello is the brainy one--scientific, intelligent, good with mechanical and electronic things. Michelangelo is the lighthearted, fun-loving, funny, joker character--also artistic. Those are pretty clear archetypes if you ask me. Now, I love the turtles as much as anybody here, and don't mean to impugn their uniqueness, but it's plain as day no matter which version you go by. Besides, these aren't meant to be exact matches, (i.e., Bubbles doesn't need to play a guitar--she played drums, actually--to be like Mikey--she's the most lighthearted, sensitive, and childlike of the PPG, Mikey is the most lighthearted, sensitive, and childlike of the TMNT. If you want to go the artistic route--Mikey writes poems, Bubbles draws pictures) you merely have to find the closest match in any given team/group. It works pretty well most of the time.

Absolutely. Believe me, as a die-hard Raph fan, I know this--sorry, didn't make myself clear. I mentioned that the old cartoon's Raph was all attitude, what I meant with "that's beside the point," is that if someone had a team that didn't really have a toughguy, but they did have an angry/attitude guy, you could use that for a Raph counterpart. My main point with my last post was to say that the Mirage version of the turtles were indeed archetypes, and that depending on what you base your parallel on, it works.

Very true. This is no remake series like New he-man, it's totally diifrent thing. And the time gap is so big that the comparison would never be fair. Since I read Mirage, I have always tought that I would see those characters in a cartoon, and the new show comes very close!

Actually, while I started this with ALL TMNT incarnations in mind, (meaning, if necessary, you can mix & match versions) the Mirage turtles are total archetypal figures.
Not really. The main difference is the Mirage TMNT change over time.
Leonardo, be it official or unofficial, is the leader figure--Mirage or otherwise.
The position in the 'family' has nothing to do with his personality. I have seen agressive types or 'brainy' types being the leaders quite often.
Raphael is the hotheaded toughguy with an attitude--in the old cartoon, he was all attitude, but that's beside the point.
The difference is Raph realizes this and wants to change. Most of the 'hotheads' in these types of things don't. Raph is also more group- and family-oriented than most characters like that.
Donatello is the brainy one--scientific, intelligent, good with mechanical and electronic things.
That is only one facet of his character, and the most shallow one at that. People tend to neglect Don is also the 'philosophical one' or the 'withdrawn one' or the 'least clannish one' or the 'pacifistic one'...... they just equate him as 'the nerd'. He is not a stereotype.
Michelangelo is the lighthearted, fun-loving, funny, joker character--also artistic.
Minus the joker. If we are still talking about the Mirage types, the only times I can remember Mike pulling any jokes on anyone or making fun of anyone is less than five. Of course, as I said, they change over time and Mike becomes increasingly less 'joker' as the comic progresses.
Also, the 'artistic' side of his character is always added on, as if its sloppy second edition. Him being an artist is probably the major aspect of his character.
Only if you match superficial characteristics. Mike writing poems and Bubbles drawing are in no way similar except on a superficial scale.
Knuckles
04-24-2003, 11:52 AM
Mike writing poems and Bubbles drawing are in no way similar except on a superficial scale.
And that's exactly what this thread's about. I don't think anybody (at least not me) is trying to draw any in-depth comparisons. I said they didn't have to be exact matches. Question: Is Raph the most hot-headed member of the TMNT? Is that a significant and recogizable personality trait? Well if the answer is yes, (which it is) then is Wolverine the most hot-headed of the core X-Men? Is Buttercup the most hot-headed of the PPG? Well then, boom--you got a match. They do not have to be in sync with each other on every single level. I don't think we'll ever get a deep, character-exploring episode of the PPG where Buttercup is coming to terms with her temper, and gradually tries to tame it over the course of the series. That series doesn't lend itself to that. TMNT does, (the Mirage, and Mirage-based incarnations, anyway) so good for it. This is intended to be a fun topic where you can find cool matches between the TMNT and other comic/cartoon/whatever teams. Plus, though I still hold to my point that though the Mirage characters change, they still have their roots, and the versions that followed, (including even the old cartoon) may have changed things drastically, but they didn't make up character traits. Donatello was made the resident genius, for example. Well, he's the most intelligent of the turtles, and good with machines and the like. The creators of the old show didn't just make that up--they may have decided to focus ONLY on that, but that's because it was a very noticable trait in the original version. Leonardo showed leadership qualities, made leader decisions, and held himself responsible for his brothers. Therefore he became the leader figure. Raphael, (the most changed for the old cartoon) got his hothead/loner quality taken away, but they retained his bad attitude. Michelangelo is the most easy-going turtle, demonstrated in a number of ways, and thus on the cartoon, he was mellow and fun-loving. The point is, everyone is familiar with the roles the turtles take on, and they didn't just come from nowhere. Leo has leadership qualities the others do not. Raph is a toughguy with an attitude and prone to temper fits. Don is very intelligent and good with scientific topics. Mike is easy-going and fun-loving. Those are superficial points and do not reflect the entire characters' personalities, obviously. But that's enough for the purposes of this thread.

[quote]If we are still talking about the Mirage types, the only times I can remember Mike pulling any jokes on anyone or making fun of anyone is less than five.And then, of course, there are other instances where Turtles other than Mike has pulled jokes.

Wow... all the really good connections have been made... hmmm... here's mine!
TMNT/ Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series
Leo = Wildwing (Leaders, altho somewhat reluctant about it)
Raph = Duke L'Orange (Play by their own rules, but follow the leaders for the most part)
Donny = Tanya (Smarties)
Mike = Nosedive (Comic relief, but great fighters)
Ninjara = Mallory McMallard (Strong chicas w/ short fuses)
Splinter = Grin (Strong and wise)
Shredder = Dragaunus (Main baddies)
Krang = Wraith (Powerful, but not as smart as they like to think)
Bebop/ Rocksteady = Siege (All brawn, no brain)
and that leaves Chameleon w/o a counterpart.... I can't think of any shape-shifters in any tmnt-verse....

TMNT/ Red Dwarf
Leo = Rimmer
Raph = Lister (more comedic than surly)
Mike = The Cat
Donny = Kryton
Splinter = Holly the computer (if Splinter added more sarcasm to his repitoire :trazz: )
