How could you guys not mention the complete awesomeness of both those covers? Holy cow, that Michelangelo cover is superb. I can't wait for these.

I'm going to guess the old man is some sort of Yoshi figure, but I'm sure that would be the guess of most around here. I love that white background with the Japanese flag.

That rat is clearly older than the Splinter we've been seeing so far in Duncan's art. Almost the spitting image of the old man in the background.

And remember this statement from IDW editor, Bobby Curnow:
Regarding the 'abbreviated timeline'...

...this is hard to talk about without giving anything away, but this is all part of the master plan, and as of right now MAJOR pieces of the puzzle have not been revealed. The family and ninja masters aspect are the core of this series, and we're not going to ignore it, or gloss over it in relation to the origin. Things are not completely as they seem.

Issue #5 cover, which should be revealed very soon (like in the next week), will give some clues!

I lovelovelove #5's cover, & I dig Mikey's cover far more than I do Raph's. It's a definite improvement.
I eagerly await the microseries' as I love solo turtle adventures. Seems they're being used to introduce new characters too, which is neat.
We know Raph's will introduce Alopex, the new Ninjara-esque character created by Kevin, I wonder if Mikes "new friend" will be a familiar face...

Totally.

Hey, does Mikey's bandanna look more orange than red to anyone else? It might just be because his name is written in orange that the bandanna looks it, but I'm not sure...

By the way, I'm glad they are writing the individual Turtle names on the cover of each micro in their respective colors...

I thought that too. Could it be a subtle attempt to gradually sneak in color bandanas without the fans noticing it immediately? :fshifty:

I was gonna say could this be title specific, because the Simonson (I think that's the guy) cover for issue 2 is a recycled piece, as are many of the others. But then I saw the 2011. I love that Yoshi might be an ancient mentor. I think the "age" of Splinter is just the artists take though and doesn't reflect anything else.

Nahh. Raphael's bandana is the same shade of red on his micro-series cover. I'm thinking it's just the colorists' preference.

I wonder if its a coincidence that the Michelangelo special takes place around Christmas time....just like the Mike one-shot from Mirage was the Christmas issue.

Also if Mike must meet a friend....Mondo Gecko, maybe? If they're going to go all-out with mutants...might as well bring back a decent one.

For whatever reason, I guess their bond in the OT, he was my first thought as well. That'd be neat, to me.

That also would be cool, I've always liked Klunk.

#5's cover is superb! Love the way the colour bounces off of the white backgroud. The best thing about this series is not just the art and writing but the way it keeps us intrigued as to what the hell they are going to off load on us the next issue. Love it!

It would be ironic and strange if the IDW creators decided for there to be TWO Splinters in this series: one who was Yoshi, and the original owner of Splinter the rat, and another who started out life as an actual rat, and became humanlike as a result of his exposure to the Mutagen...it would be a good way to keep people from arguing about which incarnation they would have preferred...

It is probably just the specific artist's depiction though...

The thing is though, the cover shown isn't the "normal" cover for #5, it's the 4:1 cover (akin to the Walt Simonson cover for #2). We haven't seen the regular edition cover to see what other hidden hints may be contained within.

EDIT: Do we know who did this cover to issue #5?

The notes say issue #5 has 2 regular covers, 1 by Duncan and 1 by the Brazilian, Mateus Santolouco, And then a Kevin Eastman variant. I'm guessing this one is Sontolouco's since his name is on the bottom there.

Also he's done some cool turtles artwork on his own including this awesome sequence with the turtles fighting Rocksteady:

Well, if that's the case, then I could just be reading too much into the art. Although... "Splinter" and the old man have an Uncanny resemblance, don't they?

I think Santolouco's style meshes very well with the look Duncan has established.

I enjoy the cover for #5. Definatly sticking to the basic covers, the new art style has grown on me. I have gotten over the weird expression of the first cover.

I do agree that the age and style of splinter on the cover of #5 is simply an artist representation. I have a feeling it may be to represent the age he feels in comparison to the age he is...i don't really know but i am definatly excited for the next 3 comics.

In regards to the new one shot. I am not sure if i enjoy the idea of all 4 covers having the same background to them. That may just be me though. Going to have to make sure my subscruiption knows to grab this as well.

I agree. I'm glad they've decided to change things up. Whether or not it ends up being good or bad, I want to see where they go with this new take on the Turtles. If it had just been a rehash of the old origin, I wouldn't look forward to each new issue as much.

I especially like that April has played a pretty significant role in their origin, and hopefully she continues to play a big role in the series.

Wow!

It's an impressive layout but it almost looks fan-workish to me. It's got those weird proportions going on with head shapes and such. The coloring is clearly consistent the IDW mold, though.

Eh, I guess with all the other variants in this series, one more won't hurt. I just hope it won't be featured on the widely distributed issues.

Nice find, MS.

Ok I got another email from Jetpack following up the first one i posted. From the info "Ralph" sent it appears that Raphael is the only micro they will be doing as a jetpack exclusive. Jetpack tentatively has plans to continue IDW TMNT exclusives with the next arch saying "When they launch the next series we will probably be on board for it."

Kinda vague email as that was the entirety of the second email i got from them so my interpretation might not be 100%.

IDW asked me to try out for a Michelangelo one shot. No script or anything, just made a page up on the fly. Unfortunately Nickelodeon (who are the rights holders and get final say) decided they wanted to go another direction.

And what direction I wonder is it that he is speaking of?

Yeah, of course, he is not an artist of Michaelangelo Micro-Series (Chris Madden is). But he was assumed on that role.

Bobby's on an airplane right now so I'll jump in here. Chris Madden's very busy right now kicking out some super-sweet pages for our next DANGER GIRL series, which obviously cut into his ability to work on the Mikey one-shot.

That said, what Andy Kuhn (whose work I've always loved) and Mr. Brian Lynch have put together for said one-shot is friggin' fantastic! You guys are gonna be stoked when you get your hands on it, I guarantee -- such a fun, FUN Mikey adventure!

I have just reckognized something about the upcomming issue that I like...as said the story takes place during christmas, but the last time we saw the turtles in issue 4 it still looked like summer weather in the park and on the character's clothes and such..so this means between the two issues a little time will have been passed...meaning that raphael may have been able to start his martial arts training and maybe even started his lessons on the sais, obviously in raphael micro he is already using them(and the weather there already looked snow free and warm again(early spring?..).....so just in time for the holyday season the brothers will have had enough time spent together...

I caught that too, but I don't think that much time actually passes. I can just assume that they're having a mild winter like we are right now (I just jogged in shorts and a tee shirt).

I wonder if the misspelling of Michelangelo was an oversight or IDW decided to keep it "authentic" and leave it in.

Raphael's retro variant didn't contradict the IDW story because Casey Jones was in it, and I imagine Michelangelo's won't be too troublesome since he probably will do some fighting with thugs, but I really wonder how they will use Donatello's which explicitly shows the magic crystal and drawings... Or will IDW just not worry about contradicting the cover?

To your first musing, I would think they are going for the sake of authenticity. Definitely not an oversight, because IDW uses the "Michelangelo" spelling.

To the second --- my guess is that they don't really care since 1) it's a variant and 2) it wouldn't make any sense doing Raph & Mike in vintage and then not Don and Leo.

Bobby Curnow
12-19-2011, 06:09 PM
Yeah, definitely intentional to keep the spelling. That misspelling has a long, proud history! Felt wrong to change it.

As for Don, while it's a completely different story, there are actually some fun nods inside the issue to story elements of the original Don micro. So mostly the retro cover is kept for consistency, but some elements are represented in the story.

It's definitely a simpler more streamlined style, but it works with the more light-hearted Mikey, I think. Even so, at least it doesn't look goofy, just kind of more stylized. Michelangelo doesn't look like a push-over, anyway.

I got the same story from my shop. Not the first time its happened with the variants. Its either a diamond issue or a printer issue. IDW doesn't deal with it unless you order direct from them.

Metropoliskid41
01-04-2012, 12:20 PM
Its Diamond's fault, they have sucked lately. They got some new warehouse that was supposed to make things so much easier but its been nothing but a pain for retailers. I have 2 buddies that own shops, they both ordered over 20 copies of #5 and neither one got any copies of the Kevin Eastman #5 RI cover. My buddy Rob's shop often gets his box in and opens it up to find that Diamond's employees in their infinite wisdom has taken some of the issues and bent them in half to fit into the box. Seriously, no joke. Other times he's gotten twice as much as he ordered and 0 copies of others. But since they own the distributor business its not like they have to worry about quality control or being scooped by their competition.

Raphael took place after issue 5, issue 5 took place on Christmas day. Michelangelo takes place on New Year's Eve, thus it's safe to say it goes along the line of: Issue 5- Raphael- Michelangelo- Issue 6.

I just received word that there will be a Global Conquest Edition for the Mikey micro. More details and cover pics on my blog (http://www.tmnt-ninjaturtles.com/blog/2012/01/breaking-news-tmnt-micro-series-2-michelangelo-global-conquest-edition/).

Not so much related to Michelangelo, but that Raphael Infested cover in the same update looks totally badass!

I don't know why, I just can't get into that artist' style of drawing the turtles.

It helps if you ignore the man-lips! XD
I just love the horror stylization, it's a perfect fit for the Infestation issues.

I agree that Raph cover rocks. I like it better than Leo's.

Me neither. The artists style is nice on its own but it doesn't lend itself well to the turtles at all.

Raphael took place after issue 5, issue 5 took place on Christmas day. Michelangelo takes place on New Year's Eve, thus it's safe to say it goes along the line of: Issue 5- Raphael- Michelangelo- Issue 6.

Issue 5 didn't necessarily take place on Dec. 25th.

It took place close enough.

Right. I was just pointing out that there's enough flexibility in the placement for a reader to have it take place where ever they feel it fits most naturally in the timeline for narrative purposes.

I just remembered why I placed #5 a little bit before Christmas day.

April and Casey still haven't left for winter break. Most colleges let out at least a week before Christmas.
