I only bought number 2-5, so I never had the chance to buy the first issue of this doomed 2K3 TMNT comic series. I was very surprised with the bold direction of making the Purple Dragon guy and the Eastman cop childhood buddies... and how they made the title Things Change reflect their lives rather than the Turtles... and yeah, it is kinda sad the cop would never see his friend again since Saki killed him.

But wow, Turtlewise it sucked. They were barely in it.. the Foot have one panel... and things are just thrown in there for no reason. You really have to watch the cartoon episode it was based on to understand what was going on from the Turtle perspective. I know the issues were similar with following the backstories and past lives of Baxter, April and Casey but at least they were main characters in the story. While good, it was so weird that they chose to do one about the cop and Purple Dragon instead of the Turtles... and in the first issue of their own comic as well. Perhaps, an inside look at one of the Turtles' perspective instead?

I really wished they went with the T4 story instead of the D'Jeeraj crap... it would have made the series last longer. I'm surprised DW comics were surprised they lost sales and interest when their comics were about the Turtles helping out random street kids... instead of the wild crazy Shredder, Foot and Triceraton battles that were goin on TV the time the books were released....

Did you ever read 6 & 7? They're much better. I loved the art, I thought it could've been a really great series.

The first issue was the best issue they did aside from the Casey issue.

Like you, I found the DW series generally enjoyable yet confusing from a production standpoint. One the one hand, you have to commend them for doing more than just doing straight adaptations of cartoon episode scripts. On the other hand, the stories don't really make any sense without having seen the episodes. I suppose it assumes that just about everyone who will be buying and reading the comics will be fans of the TV series and will expect more than just the same old story with word bubbles.

It makes you wonder why they didn't just assume the origin story and start doing whole new stories from the start. Everybody was really excited over the possibility of seeing original content from PD and LeSean, especially the T4 storyline. Yet, it ended with... how many issues of "Dheeraj"??? Two or three? Man, those stories were bad ideas that were poorly executed. If I remember, its cancellation was more due to the status of the publisher's bad business practices and unprofessional reputation, not on account of poor sales. Still, it's amazing that it sold as well as it did given the bizarre storytelling philosophy.

EDIT:

Well, I guess not everybody hated the Dheeraj arc!

Like I said, storywise, yeah... Turtlewise, naw. I felt sorry for the cop... and laughed when they brought up the breathalyzer.

I think I read 6... but have to buy 7 still. I heard they fight that gang... still doesn't compare to the Foot... Shredder... or even the Turtlebot that was promised...

Why are you guys so disappointed about the scraped Turtlebot story?

We saw it in the series, the comic version would have been only slightly different.

Big difference... seeing as Leatherhead wouldn't be in it.. and Baxter would still be mainly human in it. Based on the army of mousers in the picture, they might have pulled an archie and link this story to the reason the mousers attacked in the toon-adapted issues... Not to mention the comic was gonna be out before the Turtlebot was shown in the cartoon....

In fact the ep we saw was actually an adaptation of an issue with Leatherhead in it.. they just replaced the Utrom with Baxter and ....randomly threw Turtlebot in there... for whatever reason...

The concept of the turtles fighting a robot turtle was nothing new. It's not some epic story we missed

True, but it involved Baxter which was bringing the Turtles back to the stuff they should have been dealing with (Foot, Shredder, Baxter, etc) than some street kids....

Maybe. But as said we saw the Turtlebot in an episode AND in the first 2k3 game Konami made for the Gamecube/PS2 which had its own version of the Turtlebot with a different animated sequence for it.
