View Full Version : Would you like to see the Turtles have mutant allies?

Generally speaking about the possible use of Mondo Gecko, Ray Fillet, Napoleon Bonafrog, Merdude, Wingnut/Screwloose, maybe even Leatherhead or other mutant characters.
I think we can assume Leatherhead is a shoe-in, but I am curious if Nick will actually use any of the other old mutant characters.
Hell, even obscure ones like Mutagen Man and Muckman/Joe eyeball who were allies to the Turtles in the OT, even if they only appeared in 1 episode.

I don't feel they have to be the Mutanimals to be honest, just be used.
Merdude was technically never part of the Mutanimals, neither were the Punk Frogs.

I agree use some old ones that only got a episode or so in the ot. I always thought all the new mutants being created in the ot. Took something alway from the tmnt.

Yeah, and update them as well(which I am sure they are going to do anyways).I wouldn't mind a mix of one shot characters(Mona Lisa being one and maybe some from the 2k3 series).Though I would love to see an updated Mondo Gekko myself.

Peter, is that you?
Just joshin' man. I can understand where you're coming from...but I think there are gonna be tons on Kraang created mutants, maybe even including April's parents.
I wonder, and hear me out here, if this April will be mildly antagonistic towards our boys at first as they are mutants, and the mutants are bad and took her parents (if that is in fact the plot of the series). Who knows. I can't wait for new information. This lull in the news is rough. :P

"Just what this show needs: more mutants!"
Mutant allies are a pretty standard feature in any TMNT incarnation, Splinter first and foremost. It's more about who than if considering who the turtles will get assistance from. But I would like to see is reverse mutations if there are so many mutants; we only saw that a couple times in the OT (mostly involving April); it can be seen as a sign of victory after a good fight. I always thought Splinter became a human in the OT after beating the NES game with Game Genie until I discovered that he never mutated back.

Splinter did turn back to human for one episode.

I could see them using the Muntanimals in the show. Have them show up a few times, see how well they go over and then possible spin it off into it's own show. Wouldn't surprise me at all.
I'm all for more mutants. It doesn't bug me as much if there are more then the TMNT. Another thread on here pointed out while in the Mirage comic there weren't a bunch there were still Aliens, Monsters, and mythic Creatures. So to me when you think about it the TMNT aren't that special to begin with in the Mirage books.
So bring on some more mutants. Don't make them fixtures in the show, heck maybe show the guys coming up with a way to reverse it. But let them have contact with someone other then April and Shredder.

It would be good to see a variety of different allies like humans(Casey Jones), robots(Metalhead or Fugitoid) , aliens(Traximus), mutants( Punk Frogs or Mondo Gecko), characters from other dimensions(Usagi) . It will keep the reoccuring characters diverse.

Yup, you got me. I think the Turtles are more special when there aren't as many mutants (smash cut to Vol. 4 of the Mirage books, where the Turtles are living on an alien filled planet, and one of their only human friends, April, turns out to be extraordinary). Yup, really makes them stand out.

I would definitely like to see the Punk Frogs, that would be cool. And if were doing alternate dimensions, it would be cool to see Usagi again, and what about the Wild West C.O.W.Boys of Moo Mesa? I loved that show when I was little and loved when they crossed over with the TMNT in volume 2 of Tales of TMNT. I think it'd be cool for them to have an appearance in the series for an episode or two.

I would say yes, but an important point is that they shouldn't keep making a bunch of mutants (or a bunch of humans, for that matter) just so they can make a bunch of toys. Make no mistake, I love Playmates' figures, but I would much rather have a few characters that are well-developed than a lot of characters that are just one-offs. I don't want to be in the situation the Old Toon found itself in, wherein characters like Usagi (admittedly not a mutant, and right now not able to be used in the new show, but you get the idea) and Mona Lisa get treated as very important for a short time, and then disappear inexplicably. Every in the new show should feel like they've done what they should have done.

To answer the original question, yes. I think one of the great things that both the OT and the Archie universe did was the inclusion of other mutants. I always felt, even as a child, that having other mutant allies helped cement that they aren't necessarily alone and they have others like them that they can rely on.
I would love for some of the characters to return and be expanded upon. I've always wanted an episode or episodes that featured the world of the sewer and the various neighbours and situations that the turtles and Splinter dealt with that was previously unseen. You had friends such as Mondo Gecko, Muckman, Joe Eyeball and possibly Mona Lisa and enemies such as Rat King, Wyrm, Scumbug and Ray lurking about. There's bound to be many interesting stories there.
And of course, don't forget the Punk Frogs, Mutanimals, Ace Duck, Mutagen Man, Ninjara, Warrior Dragon, Al Falqua, Katmandu, Panda Khan, Srgt. Bananas and Walkabout. I would love to utilize those characters more.

See I'm of a torn mind on this. Show wise I think it is awesome for there to be tons of mutants and supporting characters. For some reason it works in show form for me. Bebop, Rocksteady, Leatherhead, Wingnut, Walkabout, exe seem like a great idea for the show/toyline.
However when it comes to the comics I like the Turtles not to have many mutant allies. Yet Archie seemed to do it really well. So maybe it isn't that I don't like them in the comics but more the tones that the comics seem to take when multiple mutants are added.

I get what you're saying Old Hob and I agree. For the toon, I say the more the merrier. But for the Comics I like the outcast/outsider angle, I think its a very important part of the TMNT comic mythos, and have one hundred mutants walking around it definitely takes away from that. But in the toon I think it can work, part of it I think is that in 2 seasons we get 52 episodes, that essentially 4 & 1/2 years worth of comics. So to keep the show from burning out, having a larger supporting cast to draw from is huge, and then again tone. I don't want Nick's TMNT to be like Spongebob but I do expect it to be in a lighter tone than the IDW comic, and in that more mutants would work I feel.

I commented on this in another thread but I would like to let the series run about a season or 2 or 3(sense Casey is suppose to be in Season 2) then start adding in different mutant characters, though not all at once.I would like the toon to get a foot hold,no pun intended. We really didn't see new characters in the old toon at lease for 2 to seasons.
I'm totally hoping for mutant allies (along with others such as Casey, Fugitoid, Tatoo and, of course, April).
I'd be thrilled to see Mondo Gecko ( insert Geico joke here), Muckman and Joe Eyeball, Mutagen Man, Ray Filet...
Mutanimals would be a hoot! And then...

I agree with the others; more mutants/more awesome. But, I think it's important that there should only be four mutant turtles. It'd be nice for them to know that there's other mutants for them to turn to, but there should still be the "lonely angle". That, even though there's other mutants, THEY'RE the only mutant turtles.

You make an excellent point, so I'll make a revision: Slash was an enemy, not an ally. Enemy mutant turtles are fine. It's important that they're the only four good mutant turtles, so that they're a family unit, and that they know they can only TRULY count on each other. Bad guys are bad guys. They could also use this to play up the fact that the turtles are still alone. They finally find someone who is just like them but he wants to kill them.

I hope if that they introduce Mona Lisa, she would be made a recurring character rather than a one-episode wonder. They could expand her relationship with Raph (more so than the FW cartoon) and possibly have her as a friend/partner of April.

I love Leatherhead, and while I like the Turtles having skirmishes with and/or assistance from other mutants, I really don't want it to get out of hand. I never liked the Punk Frogs, Mona Lisa (seriously, what the heck was she, anyway - another gecko?) or the Mutanimals (but then, I never got into the Archie comics, no matter how much I tried), and I don't like it when we get mutants for the sake of mutants. Old Hob, to me, felt forced in and extremely one-dimensional, but I like how he played into the whole chance-and-fate aspect of Splinter and the Turtles' mutations. Leatherhead was kind of tied to the Turtles' origins, and his conflict with himself made for great character development.
I'm just concerned about the new series going overboard with the animal thing. I really would rather not see a furry's dreams come true with sleek-and-thin-and-pretty wolves and foxes and such running about. I'll take Tokka and Rahzar over Old Hob any day. I think it's best when the other mutants are a little screwed up. None of them turn out quite so humanly perfect as the Turtles did. They were a one-in-a-million chance that not even further experiments with the Utroms' ooze could replicate. That's what makes them awesome.
I feel like I might have been a little hard on the Mutanimals. After all, I don't really mind Wingnut or Mondo Gecko. Maybe the Turtles can encounter them in another dimension, as with the Super Turtles.
Slash is only good when done right - as in, not the way he was handled in the classic cartoon (though I still think that Slash starting out as a pet of Bebop and Rocksteady is cute). He should be wildly aggressive and emotionally unstable, and as Hermano Dyvas said, he should be used in a somewhat limited capacity. Even if he ends up becoming something of a good guy, resolving his mental malfunctions (more or less), he should make some heroic sacrifice and not become a recurring character. That's just what I think works for his character.

Agreed on both paragraphs. After watching SOTO recently, I never realized how much Tokka and Rahzar would grow on me. I particularly want to see them after their "Hi/bye" cameo in Forever. Sometimes, you need a baby brute around for a different sort of enemy (Tokka was adorable like that).
I'd love to see Slash in full psychotic glory. Although, I would prefer a more feral intelligence to him -- I can't seem to think of a parallel, beyond maybe Bane or later Killer Croc from Batman: The Animated Series. (Feel free to contribute, as I'm blanking.) Obviously, we can't quite go full hardcore on a kid's show, but it can be done. If Slade from animated Teen Titans can get away with his creepiness on cable television, we might have a chance.
I don't mind mutant allies, if they aren't overused. I never realized until recently that while the OT established other mutant allies, said mutant allies were used semi-sparingly. After all, it's the Turtles' show, so if we follow the same pattern, it won't matter too much in the long run. However, there is a difference between revising past characters in a new form -- which would be my preferred choice -- vs. brand new characters. The 2003 series tried this, and with few exceptions (Hun, Chaplin and Bishop), I personally couldn't get into them. We'll see which direction the new series will go in, and we'll hash it out when it does. Leatherhead is a given, sure, but the Punk Frogs or Mondo Gecko? It depends on their media appeal, of course.

Thank you, as I was trying to convey the proper archetype when I typed that. Bane would work best, once you balance the intellect issue. (Archie Slash certainly proved he is not stupid, but he isn't a genius like Bane -- comics or animated -- would be.) I only picked Croc for his animal instinct, even though, I didn't care for what the TAS writers later did to him (thug outcast with a major skin disorder to an animal man-borderline-mutant). DC comics would later follow suit, which doesn't help matters.
All of which now makes me think of Leatherhead, who has been both ally and villain in various Turtle media. Maybe as a compromise he could be a neutral wild card, like the Rat King initially was in the OT. Or something like that.

A lot of people around here think Rat King is nuetral. That never made sense to me because he is evil! As far as the original cartoon influence goes he is their number two foe! In "Return of The Fly" the TMNT wondered into Rat King's "domain". He was prepared to fight because they invaded and the TMNT explained they were looking for April who had been kidnapped. Rat King decided to find her for the turtles and did because he liked April for her attitude and hair.It had nothing to do with being nuetral he just found some woman he liked that he had not kidnapped that time.
Another episode "Donatello's Duplicate" had Rat King team up with a mob boss that wanted to use his rats to loot the city. McFingers betrayed their alliance so Rat King who did not have the means to avenge the betrayal ratted on McFingers to the turtles by giving them a map to his hideout andwhat he was up to.He essentially used one foe to get the other.Again there is no nuetrality.

YES! I'd love to see the turtles have mutant allies! The argument that it somehow 'cheapens' the turtles seem silly to me when they are always dealing with aliens and other wierdoes anyway. The idea of life, even intelligent one, even on other planets than the Earth is not weird. The issue is not if man discovers it, but when. But I agree, other mutants like Mondo Gecko (both 1987 show and Archie), Bebop and Rocksteady are so much cooler than all genetic monsters in the 2003 show.
