Who wants David Wise to come back and write a couple of episodes for the Nick series?

Unfortunately, last spring he mentioned on Facebook that what the producers were looking for wasn't "dark enough" for him. He did say "thanks, so no thanks", so if the producers want the show to go in a darker direction, he may come in.

Now, who are some of the most prolific cartoon writers in recent years that you may feel may contribute to this new series well?

Wait, maybe I'm misreading your statement, but didn't the producers tell Wise his style wasn't edgy enough? That would mean it wasn't Wise who rejected the show because it wasn't edgy enough for him, but the producers who rejected Wise because they didn't think he could write sufficiently serious drama.

The guy who wrote the OT rejected because his stuff is too dark? Hm not so sure about that one.

100 percent wrong pal. I remember that post, and David was NOT talking about the new TMNT show. It was another (unspecified) show he had tried to get hired on with, and they had basically told him "We've seen Ninja Turtles, we don't think you're our guy".

David Wise's writing during Seasons 1, 7, 8 and 9 were hardly goofy and were about as "dark" as a Saturday morning cartoon would usually get anyway.

In fact I remember reading that David Wise actually wanted to tone down the humor of the old show and focus on the action, but Fred Wolf and the other writers preferred the comedy....hence some of those eps from Seasons 4-6 that have like next to no fighting in them.

Probably didn't help much that TMNT was a target for Christian Mom's back in the early 90's which probably made them tone down the action after the show got popular anyway.

I think Batman pretty much beat out any cartoon in the "dark" department and ruined it for any series trying to compete on that level. But even by normal standards Turtles was hardly dark. X-men and Spider-man alone were edgier then TMNT. Those series at least dealt with life and death, concepts the Turtles never really covered or took very seriously.

Part of a series being "dark" is having serious drama to it which the Turtles never had in any capacity even when the goofiness of it was being toned down. You could argue Red Sky did this but and I'd be inclined to agree it came closer then the previous seasons but even those still weren't really at the same level as other toons.

Care to ellaborate? Or are you just pig-ignorant about his work?

For this show I'd prefer that we have a fresh take on the guys. Have people who are fans write but don't bring people who've done it before. To be influenced by people is one thing but to have an old show guy on, well his idea of the TMNT has been seen. Time to give it a go with a new style.

sure, it's simple as "been there done that".

See that's kind of how I feel. I mean people are capable of writing different things but it's not likely. I mean people have a certain tendency to write the same type of stuff.

David Wise is versatile. He also did some writing for Batman: The Animated Series, which is quite far from the OT in tone.

I also see what you're saying about the need to bring in new blood, but after feeling Turtles Forever was inaccurate and quite unfair, I've come to feel that they should try to temper it with some old. Granted, this isn't a crossover, but since there looks to be some homage to the OT, it should br done right.

The movie wasnt inaccurate or unfair to the original series at all, do us all a favour and take off your rose-tinted glasses, because the original 'toon was that daft.

No nostalgia glasses here. I have been rewatching that series, and the portrayal it got has come to feel more problematic rather than less. Yes; the original toon was that "daft," but it has a subtlety to it that Turtles Forever missed.

For example, characterization. 2003 Raphael said it best; all of the 1987 turtles act like Michelangelo. There's a recurring gag throughout the movie of them wanting to go get a pizza when they should be focusing on the mission, and yes; that also occurred in the Old Toon, but it was only Michelangelo who did that in the Old Toon, and the other three OT turtles always reined him in. The movie also makes all four of the OT turtles goofballs, whereas in the Old Toon, Raphael as well as Michelangelo was a joker, but Donatello and especially Leonardo were serious.

Finally, the OT turtles never gave noogies as much as I can remember, and they tended to wear disguises when they went up top in broad daylight; at least when entering a business or government institution. Yes; they were stupid disguises and wouldn't have fooled anyone in real life, but the show acknowledged the need to wear them. Also, in Turtles Forever every onlooker's reaction to them being up there and out of costume is far too nonchalant; even in the more realistic 2003 universe. People seeing that wouldn't just gasp and turn their heads to it briefly in real life; they'd be likely to shriek and either run away or gather in a large crowd to stare.

I could go on and on with this, but why use a post? I'm going to write a review of this movie, and if you thought this post was tl;dr, you've seen nothing yet.

This ended after season 3 for the most part though, when they lost their outcast status and were recognised as heroes.

we got like 2-3 thread dedicated to the "unfairness of the Fred Wolf turtles treatment" DO we really need more whining in a Nick series thread?

Zariustwo apparently did, but yes; that's why I didn't go into too much detail.

I honestly think Wise only ever wrote 10 original scripts in his whole career, then proceeded to swap out the proper nouns depending on what show he was working on, and reused those scripts for the next twenty years.

I loved the old toon, but David Wise is notorious for being one of the laziest writers in the animation industry.

And in an industry that had guys like Donald "Submit a First Draft as a Final Script" Glut in it, that's saying something.

I won't miss him.

I agree with this. I mean, besides like episode 1 season 1 and Red Sky, that's the edgiest the OT got, at least in my opinion. And Season 1 ep 1 was only "dark" in that the animation was sort of dark and edgy. That's about it.

David Wise incorporates the perfect tone in his scripts. We need him. He can make it fun and adventurous and a mildly dark tone. Nick has to cater to him! David Wise and Paul Dini are my TMNT dream writing team! Its nice to see that Nick offered him the job but to learn he turned it down because it was not dark enough makes me worried. I don't like the violent type or the silly type. This guy was the perfect median IMHO :tgrin:.
