There must be some genuine experts on Japan here. In the 1987 TMNT cartoon, Splinter is often shown eating sushi, and there are various Japanese-themed fast food restaurant chains like Samurai Sam's and Sarku Japan, which serve mainly teriyaki chicken with rice and vegetables. But does anyone know for sure what is the typical Japanese diet nowadays? Sushi seems too difficult to prepare as a daily diet staple.

Rice, various vegetables and meat. Seafood is fairly common, too. Sushi is something that's not that expensive over there (eg: kaitenzushi), so that's a typical thing to get with friends and co-workers.

And beer. Lots of it.

Japan is an island nation, so of course they eat lots of seafood. Sushi is just one way to prepare it. Noodles, rice, fish, and other meat are all typical.

Probably not much different than most developed countries given how global cuisine types are nowadays. This isn't the old days, where most foreign foods were associated with immigrant enclaves or native neighborhoods. Thanks to marketing technology, you can basically have most types of cuisine worldwide in any big city nowadays. Note that link says that cities have American-style fast food with burgers and fried chicken. All that's different nowadays is a better selection of traditional Japanese food than average, that's all. Ask the same in Japan about what Americans eat, and the answer will be similar in areas near the coasts especially with a few regional specialties. In fact there's a sushi bar right across from the building I work in. Though, I am more of a Chinese than Japanese guy in terms of cuisine preference, though I like both.
