From what I saw all Turtles forever did was make fun of the old show and make the ot Turtles look like idiots

This topic has been expressed several times before on other threads, just so you're aware.

Regarding your statement, I do have to agree a little bit. It does bother me that they made the OT out to be much goofier than it actually was, but I think it was mainly trying to portray how the OT turtles would react to the darker world of the 2k3 series. Did they succeed? Well, IMO, it could have been better...

I feel that Leonardo was the only one greatly exaggerated. Outside of that, most fans either blow the whole thing outta proportion or clearly don't remember the OT all too well. Besides, what you consider "making fun" I'd say is merely friendly jabs.
It's not as though the 4kids turtles went unharmed, Mirage Raph insulted them a few times.

About the only scene I didn't like was the OT Turtles crying in 2k3's Raph's arms, but the other scenes were fine.

Plus fans act like scenes were making fun, when in reality they made sense. When Mike struggles to pull up the manhole cover, it wasn't the writers making the OT Turtles weak, it was making fun of how the sewer lid covers seemed to be like paper in the old toon.

The aforementioned "crying scene" is the only major complaint I had with the OT portrayal as well. So many OT fans get butthurt over this movie, like it's slamming the old show or personally attacking them for liking it. I've even heard someone go as far to say that Turtles Forever was solely made to glorify the 4kids cartoon, which is one of the silliest assumptions I've ever heard.

I take back my "it could have been better comment" in my previous post. While a little exaggerated at times, for the most part they got the tone of the OT spot on-- it was always more of a comedy than anything.

The point has been made several times around here that the OT was portrayed stupider than they actually were to make the message clearer that they were necessary despite their annoyingness. Without the OT, 4kids never would have come into the picture, and the comic would have been obscured by time. However, despite being in need of high doses of ritalin, the OTurtles saved the day repeatedly in the movie, and Bebop & Rocksteady's incompetence resolved the entire conflict.

You know Gobo I didn't think of it like that. You raise valid points. If it hadn't been for the OT characters Ch'rell would have won.

Well I've posted my opinions several times but they didn't seem like poking fun at the OT but mean spirited jokes, "oh look how retarded the OT was". I barely have any nostalgia about the OT and most of my memories are recent which is why I know the OT is not like that. They were treated terrible and over exaggerated to the point of ridiculousness, the turtles were never this wacky in the OT, heck not even in TNM. They were out of character and instead of this awesome team up it was another way for the 2k3 turtles to act "edgy" which is not going to age very well. The OT was goofy and they could have done so much better portraying this but instead they went with cheap gags.

Under statement of the year...... I they would have jst made them like the red sky era or like they were ment to be in the pilot eps, instead of turning them into such blatant retards.

They acted almost exactly as they did in the OT. If they happened to look like idiots it's not the writers fault. Just a side effect of contrasting them with the other turtles.

See have to agree. There was no way for them to come off looking as anything other then goofy/retarded. When you take characters like they were written for the majority of the time and place them in a situation they would never normally face it's going to be bad.

Well that and we all know how much Peter hated the Fred Wolf toon. So I think he might have pushed for them to be the way they were.

I have absolutely no problem with the portrayal of the original toon's characters in Turtles Forever. I've always felt that the movie was meant to be laughing "with them", not "at them".

1. The old show made fun of the old show. Always.
2. The OT Donatello is the go-to-guy for much of the science in the movie
3. Old Show characters save the day, not the 4Kids cast

In the end of course it is when the Mirage Turtles really save the day and make fun of BOTH considering they were sellouts (for example, what Hun, Bishop, and Cherell were to 4kids compared to their series). In other words:

Mirage--->4kids--->Fred Wolf in order from serious and hardcore to goofy and commercial. And of course like we've said, there were moments when the OT (Red Sky) was more serious than the 4kids series (Fast Forward and to a degree, Back to the Sewer). TF simply "pigeonholes" all of the tropes of each series to give a "theme park version" of what each universe really is. In other words, it's great the first few times you watch it, but then you'd wish if each team would coordinate with one another, but then again this special was to prove how each version of TMNT was different from each other.

They did not act nearly that retarded imo. The were much more series in season 1-3 and especially the pilots eps and the red sky era. The only time they even came close to something like that was season 4 or 5????? not sure cant recall the exact seasons,

But bc the OT had such a drastic difference in tone through out the seasons it really cant be helped I guess.

I'm with you! The Fred Wolf Turtles were always so hardcore and gritty and serious, I can't believe the hatchet job those stupid 4Kids writers did to them in Turtles Forever!

Admittedly I haven't seen the old toon in years, but how Turtles Forever portrayed this is how I remember the show looking back. Then again, my favorite episode of the Old Toon is "The Cufflink Caper" one, so that probably says something.

That's not a surprise at all. That was definitely one of the better episodes.

No, but they still took the situation kinda seriously. They knew the plots were crazy and sloppy and kinda rolled their eyes and went along with it cause well... they still had to stop Shredder no matter how silly his schemes were. Plus, the noogie stuff was stupid and was used so often a new fan would think that was a staple of the old show. I guess the biggest offender was Leo who only acted kinda leader-ish once (when he told the guys to take things serious). Seeing as the OT turtles were a little more one-dimensional, being the leader was all Leo really was. I'm surprised there was never scene when it was time to plan and both Leo's had a conflict over which one to obey. It's like he forgot he was in charge and was perfectly fine with letting this 'other Leo' take charge and call the shots. Even OT Shredder continued to try (and comically fail) to pull authority despite being completely outmatched by NT Shredder and Karai.

I wouldn't say TF was "mean" to the OT at all. I think it was just trying to portray the general silliness that the OT normally had. After all, the 2K3 world is more edgier and darker than the OT world. I think they did a good job with it.

ToTheNines
12-09-2011, 09:23 AM
Definitely not "mean", but the characterizations were certainly off a tad. It would have helped tremendously to have had the original cast back, or even have David Wise or Michael Reeves write the dialogue for the 80's characters.

If you honestly think TF was being unfair and only poking fun at the OT you seriously missed the entire point of the film. It pokes fun at all aspects of TMNT. The Mirage turtles act overly serious and talk with extreme Dark Knight throaty voices. They also had a joke about Mirage Shredder being defeated quickly.

The 2K3 turtles all think they're extreme and hardcore, Raph especially, and then the Mirage turtles bag on them for it. It's layering in the humor. All 3 were made fun of equally. Plus as it was mentioned OT characters saved the day and while 2K3 Don mocked OT Don's science skills the stuff he built still worked.

It was a celebration of the franchise as a whole and if you can't make jokes about yourself then you take yourself entirely too seriously.
