View Full Version : Should IDW TMNT adopt the kneepads/elbow pads?

I actually have no strong feelings either way myself, I'm just curious what the general opinion is.
Visually I think I'd prefer the elbow/kneepads look, but on the other hand I'd really like the IDW TMNT to have at least one thing to visually distinguish themselves from any other TMNT universe and, while I wasn't too fond of the wraps look at first, I think I've come around.

I vote wraps but I don't really care if they add the pads at some point as long as they're not rainbow stylin'.

For the most part, it seems to only depend on the artist. The turtles wear wraps in Duncan's art, but in Eastman's and the Micro-Series covers they wear the pads.

I did not any problem with pads as long as they were not rainbow.
They were ok.
But to be honest i really liked IDW's wraps.
So wraps for me.
( tho i have accidentally clicked the wrong answer. silly me )

To me pads serve a logical purpose. Ever since I saw the wraps they were kinda a head scratcher for me. If your gonna go wraps why aren't the ankles and wrists wrapped up?
I think that was one of the main reasons that iced me on Duncans art at the start. Something I've slowly been warming up too with each issue as I think hes getting more comfortable and better doing the turtles.
I'm not losing any sleep over the wraps as Ive always just considered it a minor annoyance but I'm still curious to the thought process behind the change.
ETA- Wraps or pads, If they ever go rainbow with them Ill be getting out my pitchfork.

The wraps are one of Duncan's signatures. Keep em.

I recall this was the first thing Laird harped on when he saw Duncan's covers; seemed like a rather petty thing to criticize, to me.
Personally, I like em. Maybe not more than the pads, but certainly not any less. It just seemed like a bit of creative freedom taken with the character designs, which let's all be realistic here, don't provide much wriggle-room for artists because they're so basic and unaccessorized.
The wraps look cool, they don't interfere with the "classic" appearance of the TMNT in any reasonable capacity, so let em stay.

I also dig the wraps. They work well visually, and are a nice change up from the standard turtle gear.

Meh. I've always chalked it down to an artistic choice based on Dan not being well-practiced in drawing the TMNTs when he got the gig. Now that he's fine tuning his style, maybe he'll change it, maybe he won't. I really think it's just artistic choice.

I always though it was him trying to put his ''mark'' on the turtles history. But it doesn't really matter to me. I can deal with the wraps.

the wraps dont bother me and i think it would be pointless to swtich...that is unless they decided to color the pads and have them match their bandanas

I got used to the wraps, though I don't mind the occassional 'classic look' on Kevin's covers from time to time. Like Andrew said, it helps distinguish them from the other turtles, like the OT has the initialized belt buckles and the NT doesn't and so forth. I guess it helps kinda tie in with the Nicktoon in case some kids tune into the comic and are too young to remember the 2K3 guys.
I'm just glad they didn't go with the 3-toe hoof thing.

On the other hand, though... soon IDW is going to be literally printing a seperate comic for the Nickelodeon cartoon. Would they really want their regular, original comic to look so much like it? It was less of a factor when the IDW TMNT were all red-bandannaed... but now, wraps and rainbow, in both incarnations? Hm...

The comic based on the cartoon will probably use similar CG rendering for the art to match the art style of the show.

Has there been word if there will even be a "show" comic? I mean I like the wraps in IDW book and they work for me. Like Andrew said it gives them something different then the other versions. But aren't the Nick TMNT also wearing wraps?

Exactly I think they'll still look pretty distinct from each other based on the total turtle look. I like the wraps, I like the pads, I think the wraps look great and if that's what Duncan is comfortable with I think he should keep on kicking butt on the art. But I enjoy seeing the pads make it on the Eastman covers and other variants. I like with different variants have totally distinct and different looks and feels to them. Since the Ongoing interior art obviously can't sastify everyone's favorite look, especially with so many cool looks done in the past, I think its cool when the variant covers reflect a little different style than Dan's. Just my 2 cents.

I asked Bobby about this over at IDW within the past month, and he said nothing to confirm write now, but its something they would like to pursue but haven't really discussed it in full detail with Nick at the moment so nothing set in stone.

The pads make more sense but that doesn't really matter in this universe. They both can look cool if drawn right.

I absolutely LOVE the wraps. They're one of my favorite changes in this series.
To me, it just feels more like something a legitimate martial artist would wear.
I often tape my wrists and ankles, sometimes my knees, and even one of my elbows at one point but I have never had pads.
And the wraps simply look cooler to me (since they're less bulky and more sleek, which is always good).

I can completely understand if you prefer the pads just because you're used to them but I am not sure why people are saying the pads "make more sense."
Like, they make more sense because the padding would help in a fight? Because they really wouldn't. It would likely protect them more but it would also soften the blow to whoever is receiving it as well.

I think it would be kinda cool to see the turtles wearing their pads when they are training and then the wraps when they are out doing there thing. I think THAT would make the most sense.

plus the turtles look smaller, younger, have 3-toe-hooves-for-feet and bladed weapons... plus april is a kid and the designs for things like the Foot and such might also be different.

Depends on what the pads are made of. If they're hard, like landing pads which is what I assume they're mainly used for, then they would hurt quite a bit if someone hit you with one. Even if they're soft though they only soften blows on knees and elbows. Plus the turtles are strong even if someone is wearing a padded knee they can still knock the wind out of you or hurt pretty bad. Boxing gloves don't stop boxers from getting KO'd or cut. All about force.
It really is a style thing though. But as I mentioned earlier I always imagined they wore them to protect their knees and elbows during all the jumping they do across roofs and such. Too many hard landings without support are going to mess you up no matter how trained you are.

Wraps are fine.
I might be pro-multicolor bandanna, but there really is no need for the kneepads too. If you're going to go with the colors, then I prefer the movie look where the bandannas are multicolored but the pads were brown.

Actually, that's exactly what they do.
I mean, obviously people still get knocked out but without the gloves, they'd get knocked out a lot sooner. A lot sooner.
Gloves are pretty much just to protect your hands. The fact that you can take more hits to the head with gloves on is worse for a person in the long run since you get hit more.
But in an actual fight, you would definitely want to be without gloves.
The jumping/landing on rooftops and such is a really good point though that I never thought of. They'd be really useful for that.

I just noticed though... the nicktmnt use pads AND wraps... while the IDWtmnt only have wraps.... combine that with the hoof-toes and bladed weapons and we have enough differences.
