Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #9
(W) Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman (A) Dan Duncan (CA) Kevin Eastman, Dan Duncan

You'd think that General Krang's arrival in New York City would be bad enough news, right? Oh no, there's still plenty more misery to go around! The Turtle's home in the sewers is destroyed thanks to a sinister team-up between Baxter Stockman and Old Hob. Now that the Turtles are homeless, with one of their own captured, things have never looked bleaker for our heroes. The key to their salvation may lie with... April O'Neil??

Notice they've only put up the retailer incentive cover. I suppose the main cover isn't finished yet. Again.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Micro-series #4: Leonardo
(W) Brian Lynch (A) Ross Campbell (CA) David Peterson, Ross Campbell

The final Turtle Micro-series is here! Leonardo, the eldest brother, has always valued honor and discipline. These noble qualities may not be enough against the most fearsome opponents he has encountered-the ruthless Foot Clan! That's right, the first battle between Turtle and Foot happens RIGHT HERE! This story also leads into the next ongoing story-arc. Don't miss this essential issue!

Wow that Leo cover is awesome! Although the perspective is a bit odd--those feet look ginormous! I wish Peterson would draw a TMNT comic.

#9's cover is weird--I'm assuming Duncan will draw his version soon?

We're reprinting the Archie collection that has the first three issues... guess no one scrubbed the 25th anniversary thing. Ha, super smooth move on our part.

That's about all I know about that.

Yeah, Dan hasn't had a chance to do the #9 cover. Though next month will see his #10, which is great. RI cover there is by Ethan 'Axe Cop' Nicolle.

Awesome news about the Archie book.

I'm gonna assume that it's a "test the waters for interest" sort of dealie? I hope there's a response, as it's the later stuff I'm sure everybody wants to see collected.

#9... The Turtles design remindes me of Battle Nexus video game cover (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_2:_Battle_Nexus). I wonder if it's the same artist.

And really, what's the deal with the trade cover? Oh, nevermind. Cool news, indeed.

Regarding the TMNT Adventures Reprint:

That's a real surprised the book is getting another print run!

As much as I like to support a brand to increase the chances of future sales... IDW is gonna have to entice me with something extra to get me to pony up for a reprint of issues I already own multiple times over and can probably buy used for under a dollar a piece.

Might I suggest an original short story or two drawn in the vintage ArchieTMNTA or Fred Wolf style? :)

Because I am a sucker for original content in TPB.

You think maybe testing the waters to have The Forever War completed? :thyper: The problem is I have no need for the trade paeprback since I have all the issues but I want to show interest in seeing this long awaited mega story!

Testing the waters wouldn't be a good place to put the effort into basically creating from scratch a very dead project. Now if the Archie trades sell well....maybe.

That's sort of my dilemma.

HOWEVER, as Oldmanwinters pointed out, were they to include some sweet exclusive bonus content... I'd be all over that. ESPECIALLY if it were a short back-up strip. If it's a story, I HAVE to own it. I'm a consumer whore like that.

But even if it's just a gallery of images (and TMNT Adventures had a LOT of pin-up galleries to pick stuff from), then that might make it worth it, too.

There is always hiring the old team to pick up their notes from where they left off. If they are hiring Kevin as a co-plotter and consultabt and Tristian, who worked for Mirage at the end of its run to work on that Infestation mini, I wouldn't put it past them for looking to them, however its generating interest in the incomplete work. I have been waiting for this thing since 3rd grade!

I see your point Dr. and OMW. I would for that.

Bobby, we need to see more art from the highly-talented man responsible for the micro-covers! That Leonardo is craptacular! Definitely my favorite micro-series cover so far.

Well, it's just a retailer's incentive cover, and on the IDW forums, Bobby mentioned that "As for future variant covers, I like those to be the artist's interpretations of the Turtles as much as possible. So they're welcome to use the 'all red' if they prefer, but that hasn't happened yet."

Thanks for the info! Well, the 2009 trade was presented in a smaller size. Perhaps this version will be printed in the size of the original comics. That would be nice. I'm excited about this, but I would be absolutely thrilled if more trades were released following this one, i.e., the Murphy (Clarrain) written stories. If IDW/Nickelodeon want to release something that the original fans of the OT who haven't followed the Turtles in a long time will pick up and read (which I'm guessing they do), and will still enjoy as adults, then they need look no further than the Adventures series. I like to think of it as what the OT might have been if the Mirage crew were in charge of making it. After all, that's pretty much what it was, so it really has something for everyone, IMO. Those stories deserve to see the light of day again, and are perhaps even more relevant today. I may be getting ahead of myself here, considering this was just announced, but I just wanted to state all that for the record. :)

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned TMNTA #5 is really TMNTA #1.

I don't think "ripped off" is the right term, though. Until #5, TMNTA was just adaptations of Fred Wolf issues. Now, it would be one thing if TMNTA stuck by and made itself a continuing part of the Fred Wolf universe (in which case, sure, those earliest of issues would make sense... after all, they'd just be showing a window into what would already be a part of its universe, whether it was otherwise seen in a cartoon or not)... but TMNTA #5 and onward, it diverged and we can all agree it became a pretty firm independent universe. Reprinting pre-TMNTA #5 issues only serves to further confuse an already confusing issue.

Agreed. I was certain this was going to be my favorite Micro-Series cover but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be the case. That's okay though, it still looks great! If anything, it actually looks pretty close to the way the turtles looked in Vol. 1 #1 and that's pretty cool in itself! And in a way, I'm kind of glad my favorite covers were Mike and Don's since they get shrugged off way too often.

Why are people acting like the Archie miniseries isn't important? The Dooney art is worth it and it shows the origin for the Archie Turtles as well as Shredder and Krang.

If you go straight to issue 5, then the Archie turtles have no origin. Just because it's adapted from episodes doesn't make it less important.

Also keep in mind casual fans may have never watched the show in years so the stories in that book will be new to them.

I would read an April issue too. A comic from the POV of a college girl that knows four mutant turtles, could be an interesting perspective.

I was confused by the first post, because on first glance I thought it was saying that the Leonardo cover was the incentive. Glad it isn't, because it looks awesome.

I think instead of re-releasing the 25th Anniversary trade, they should include more issues, up to the point where they had original stories. Then again, this trade might still get read by people who don't have those issues, or new readers that remember the old cartoon.

Also, Dooney's art is awesome.

Wonder who got captured. Money's on Splinter.

I think Splinter makes the most sense and it's a classic storyline we've seen iterated a few times. This series does have a history of throwing some curveballs, but with the first story arc involving a missing turtle, to have a turtle go missing again 4 issues later would seem pretty redundant. How about this for a twist... Casey Jones is the one who goes missing?

Let me take a guess at what will go down. I could be more wrong than right,but...It sounds like Baxter unleashes the Mousers under Krang's order to have Splinter, who seems to be the more important speciemen, brought back to the lab for whatever test they are being used for. Splinter is successfully captured meanwhile Casey needing a tutor answers April's ad and learns of her internship at Stocktronics where the TMNT and Splinter were mutated. Nowhere else to turn with thier father figure captured Casey introduces the green team to April to help them get answers and shut down Baxter's operations?

The Turtles having to function on their own without Splinter has been a staple of the franchise.

Yep. Just like in Vol. 1 when Splinter was captured by the Utroms, in the first movie when the Foot kidnap Splinter, on in the 4kids series where Splinter is taken by the guardians to the Utroms.

Given we're going through the Mouser story it is expected.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Archie 100 Page Spectacular

Michael Dooney (w & a & c)

Heroes in a half-shell for all ages! Representing the three-issue mini-series that adapted the first five episodes of the original animated TMNT series! Featuring the origins of the Turtles, Splinter, Bebop and Rocksteady… and the first Archie appearances of Shredder and the Foot Clan!

FC * 100 pages * $7.99

It sounds like it won't be a trade but a 100-page special, which is okay but I hope their other Archie or 'classic' collections are better than just 100-page comics.

Metropoliskid41

I actually kinda like that they are doing it in 100 page collected editions, I really like that format for the DC Comics Presents books that reprint old issues and story arcs. $8 for 100 pages ain't bad, I'd be totally fine if they released the whole Archie series that way.

wasn't that Adventures trade gimped in some way? It was digest sized or the colors were off or it was in black/white?

I disagree about the first issues not being included, especially the first three, they tell a decent story. Now the first four issues are another thing but I don't think it's too bad, it's not like the first Adventure stories were that great either, only downside it can have is people will think that it will just adapt the cartoon but counting most people probably don't remember it won't care.

IDW could perhaps offset the reader dropoff by including an "Introduction to TMNT Adventures" type of forward that explains while these first issues adapted the original cartoon, writer Steve Murphy - under the pseudonym "Dean Clarrain" - began crafting the title into its own identity by telling original stories..." so readers go into the book knowing that the following trade will have these original stories.

Hey, telling the owner of the shop I go to about the Future Shark trilogy got his curiosity piqued enough to check it out. He hadn't read a Turtle book in years before the IDW series and was under the impression the Archie series was strictly for children. The opening phrase that excited him: "Dude, they (Murph/Allen) brutally slaughtered the Mutanimals..." :tcool:

Do we know yet what kind of format the "Archie 100 Page Spectacular" is gonna be? Is it a near-identical reprint of the Mirage trade, or will it be full comic sized and maybe a paperback? The phrasing "100 page spectacular" makes me think it'll be a paperback collection, not a proper trade—which, to be perfectly honest, I'd rather have over a hardbacked, pocket-size reprint of the first edition.

So who wants to bet Leonardo gets beaten up in this to near death, Shredder then appears in #10 to kick everyone elses asses, and the Turtles retreat with their new friend April (and Casey) to Northampton?

We also know someone gets captured here, most likely Splinter, which gives me Movie 1 vibes. It might be interesting to see the Foot capture Splinter this early on.

Yeah, and it would be cool if Shredder got to learn more about the TMNT through Splinter this way. Not like in mirage where he knew zilch about them, I mean it worked there of course but I don't want that in IDW. I want Shredder to be around a little longer.

I don't think Northampton is going to happen. #5 revealed that April's from upstate New York, and her second semester is in full swing by now so she's probably not going to just truck them up there in the middle of that... to her (still alive) parent's home. She probably doesn't even have a car.

Not saying they will end up in Northhampton in this universe, but the original Northhampton house from the comics was owned by Casey's Grandma and it would certainly be simply to just repeat that.

I wouldn't mind seeing the guys get out of the city to re-coup though. I always personally had a fondness for the downtime in Northhampton stories.

Right you are, but the synopsis says that the turtles "find their salvation" with April, which is why I ruled out the Casey's grandma thing.

But I agree with you, I've always loved the farmhouse down time stuff.

CyberCubed

They could simply hide out in April's apartment in NYC then. Assuming they fight in the sewers/streets, its not like any of them know where April lives or if they've seen her with the Turtles at that point.

I fully expect there to be an arc with the Turtles in April's apartment, much like the Mirage, first movie, original cartoon and 4kids series did after the Mousers destroy the lair and first Foot fight.

Especially if Splinter is missing.

As we all have come to know, Tom Waltz's writing style tends to weave multiple threads of story in each issue. Though the main story arc may not involve mousers, it's possible one last renegade mouser shows up in the beginning of #9, to kick off the issue with a big action scene which then leads in to something else down the road. Kind of like the Savate ninja that is only in the first few pages of #6. I do love that giant mouser, though!

But in the Raphael issue didn't she say she recalled slightly being a regular fox?? Wouldn't that make her a mutated animal like the guys?? Not that she couldn't have been lying to get Raph's sympathy but that sprang into my head

Donnie
03-27-2012, 08:54 AM
Explain to me how that would make any sense whatsoever please.

Yeah... I still don't see it.

Seriously? Lol she's obviously trained, she's female (yeah, I'm goin there), and she's a leader of some type evidenced by her communication w/ Bebop & Rocksteady and the fact that if she was given the mission (assuming by Shredder) to find the Turtles lair, she has to be a big deal. Plus, we know that humans can be directly changed into anthros. Maybe she isn't THEE Karai, but she could be IDW's version of the character.

How is that far-fetched?

ToTheNines
03-27-2012, 09:36 AM
Not necessarily far-fetched, but that'd just be kinda stupid if you ask me. First of all, not every new character has to be a familiar one in disguise. Plus, it'd just totally defeat the purpose of Karai's character.

But even if she was Karai "in disguise", couldn't her character be used in a similar purpose as Karai was in Mirage? If they're even going that route.

I just hope they're not the same character. Or ya know, that she serves to be sort of Shredders adopted kid. That'd be wack.

There's like 0 parallels between her and Mirage Karai right now. Karai came to NY years after the turtles killed Shredder in order to restore order because she was the big bad boss of the Foot in Japan. Other than kidnapping Leo to show she wasn't messing around, she almost immediately allies her self with the turtles. And she's a human.

Alopex doesn't resemble that at all. I suppose I could see them using her in a similar role as 4kids Karai (conflicted between good/bad) but we have no evidence of that and even if they did do that with her, it doesn't have to make her the "Karai" of IDW, now does it?

I should have used 4Kids rather than Mirage, because that's more what I meant. Welp it's doesn't "have" to make her the Karai of IDW, but I think it'd be rad.

here's an interview Brian Lynch and i did with Newsarama about Leonardo, it's also got a couple more previews: http://www.newsarama.com/comics/tmnt-leonardo-one-shot-idw-interview.html

i come off like such an annoying nerd and Brian comes off so classy, i'm embarrassed! haha. when doing the interview, which i did separately from Brian, i thought it was more about TMNT in general rather than specifically the IDW Leo issue so here i am yakking about the Mirage comics, d'oh. i'm a PR nightmare. ^Awesome interview.

So by the "saving a life" would most likely be referring to Splinter although you'd think the other Turtles would accompany Leo after what happenend in #8 (but to be fair, this is a one-shot and it will probably explain why the others won't be present.)

And, OMG, those pages!:o:D

Thanks Ross! Everything looks great as expected. I'm curious though, the Foot are drawn like the Mirage version where the IDW series has given them a more "traditional" ninja design. Is this something they just gave you artistic license to or is there a reason why they look different than what we've seen in the main series?

thanks, Matches! i shouldn't get into it too much, i don't want to spoil anything, but there's a part in the Leo issue that kind of gives it more context.

anyway, Dan's ninja design is great but the original bug eyed look is so TMNT-specific, no other property has ninjas that look like that, so i felt like it would be a shame not to use it somehow so we worked it in. plus i wanted the Foot to be kind of scary and creepy for this issue and the blank emotionless bug eyes work pretty well for that.

Any particular reason you're waiting till Tomorrow to post it? I mean, I will definitely check it out when you do. But, if you wanted some exposure on your site, why wouldn't you post it up before anyone else does? Or are there 'rules' for that kind of stuff.

I have to disagree, Jay Fotos who did the coloring did an amazing job. The issue feels dark and eerie, and his change of coloring from outdoor to indoor environments is just beautiful.

That would be useful information wouldn't it? But like I, and many comic shop owners, always say: Diamond ain't worth a ****.

At least they were kind enough to give us a heads up... this happened to Ghostbusters last week without any warning. Thankfully, my shop got it anyways.

Just make sure you call your shop and ask if they got it in before driving out to get it. Unless of course something else you read is out Wednesday and you're going anyway.

The last Diamond delay for IDW TMNT impacted the east coast - it may be that this is the case again. I can confirm that all covers of #9 were distributed to Denver, CO as I picked them up at my LCS this morning.

I think you're right on this now that I remember back...it was kind of random. All these years of collecting comics and I still can't figure out which locations and states are serviced by which Diamond Dist. Center...
For instance, Texas didn't get the #9 today but Colorado did? You'd think they would be the same. You confirmed Maryland got it but I'll be interested to see if Mass. or other states in that region go it as well.
