I was looking through a small stack of TMNT comics at a nearby shop when I noticed the number four on the cover art of the #1 Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The comic is in great shape, pages are a little browned/yellowed and there is really nothing wrong with the edges. I paid $3.60 for the book. I am not sure how hard this one is to find but I feel like I lucked out. How much is this one worth and how much have other people paid for it?

I'm thinking for some reason that one isn't exactly cheap, I know I've seen it listed on ebay before.

This was definitely a misprint and is pretty rare. The only listing on eBay right now is at $275, so I think it's safe to say you got somethin' pretty rare there.

those are generally worth between $50 and $150 depending on condition. I sold this one not too long ago:

They used to be much more expensive, but a couple years ago a guy popped on the scene with like 50 copies he had bought off the newsstand.

I wanna say I paid $100 for this copy 2 or 3 years ago:

This is what I love about collecting comics.

I recently found a copy of Tales #32 for $2.60!

I know its the thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction when you find it. In this case it was that "holy ****" moment when I found something I never thought I would find in a bin.

Yep, a pretty rare book. You got a deal for it. And man, one of my favorite Tmnt covers of all time. I love Leo on it, really ''leading'' and taking charge of the situation.

Archon's version of rare is like 25 or less, by most people's standards the #4 misprint is scarce. I paid 100 bucks for mine last January (shipping was free).

Bumping this old thread. I just scored one too today! Never in my life did I think I'd get one of these or check out ebay for a low price one I'd try to win. I was digging through the TMNT back issues at one local comic store and the first comic leading the bundle was this misprint. What caught my eye was the cover art/title and the issue number. The store staff or the owner must've acquired a collection of 2nd prints of the early TMNT issues as that was what was all in the start of the stack and this was deemed #4's 2nd print. See the stores themselves may not even know about it. Also the owner/fan that had it too was unaware of its history.
Seeing some past copies on ebay by googling (if links still exist), there were a few auctions from Canada. I'm in Edmonton, AB. Kinda makes you wonder how many ended up here and the US? But one old auction was clearly one not in great shape with creases and color smear/white fadings and it still went for $100. My copy I'd say is about Overstreet pricing standards about "fine" shape. Faint crinkle/creases along the spine, couple of dents on the front cover and minor blunting along the bottom spine and strange faint creasing as well like a corner of a circle towards that bottom 3rd of the spine. Colors are good on the cover. Staples attached to the cover are good. I think its OK, decent shape. I paid $6 right away and didn't want to miss out on this by holding off buying it later.

Definite nice find dude! $6 is a steal. I also saw a recent sold ebay BIN listing for something like $3.

I had no idea that issue was considered rare. I probably paid $3.50 for mine years ago.

Wow. I have one. I've read it a bunch, I guess it's in good condition... what should I sell it for?

Nothing as lucky as the guy that found the albedo#2 (first appearance of usagi yojimbo) inside a behind a batman comic they were both bagged and board together and he paid like 3 bucks for the batman issue talk about lucky!!!!

Awesome. I also found an Albedo #2 in a $5 box once along with #3 and 4 back in '98-99. A once in a lifetime find for sure. But my guess is there are probably still a few out in the wild, along with this #4 misprint (which there are probably more of).

Since this thread is about misprints & whatnot, I have a copy of Vol. 2 #13 where the cover is backwards, is that worth anything? Is it rare?

The original run of that book was all backwards. Mirage then fixed the error and resent the books. I think the wrong ones were supposed to be recalled, but most got sold. I don't know if I've ever seen it sold for significantly more, though.

I picked one of those misprints of #13 up on Ebay last year for $5. I see them listed at high prices usually, but they don't sell for that high. Looking through recent "sold" listings, they seem to go for $25-30.

Well I could definitely use $25-30 right now. :tlol: I got mine for free so that's all profit. Thanks, you two!

Hah, I've always wondered why my copy of #2.13 was backwards... now I know.

Here is a site that goes into extreme detail on all of the notable TMNT misprints. According to it, the #13 misprint is the "least rare" of all of the TMNT misprints with an initial print run of 10,000 (with an unknown number of copies recalled).

edit: also, here is an example of the #3 Laird's Photo in white error (500 copies), where the seller didn't know it was an error. This auction sat at $60 for days. I thought I might have been the only one who noticed it was an error. But during the final minute of the auction, it shot up to $764.54!

I have copies of both the #4 misprint and vol 2 #13 reverse cover.

$6 for the #4 is a steal. I paid $150 for mine back in Feb on eBay. I would say in 9.0/9.2 condition.

I got the #13 from Mirage Studios in Jan. I ordered thinking I was getting a regular comic but the error came instead. I paid $3.50 but they are going for $30-80 on eBay.

Whoah, Mirage has the #13 reverse cover? That'd be cool to get that from them if I really wanted it. Not sure if I'd bother. Its $11.00 just to ship a comic. It has made the Vol. 4 latter mail order issues brutal to buy.

I was ordering a bunch of books at the time including vol 4 #30. I didn't plan on getting the reverse cover. It just showed up. I think shipping was only $5 from them the last time I ordered. Has something changed?

Well I'm in Canada. But I swear when the TMNT Vol.4 #29 and 30 were orderable they were asking $5-7 years before. I also remember in the last year or so that USPS has gone up in all pricings which includes any Intl shippings. This could be why. I'm only greatful that Mirage actually ships the comics in a stiff envelope. But its makes it costly to go thru Mirage unless you order more books at a time I think. Actually I did order the last bit of Vol. 2 Like #9 or #10-13 from Mirage years before. So I don't think I'd bother again. I quit Vol. 2 back then as I thought it wasn't as good and was kinda budget conscious on my comic titles.
