I'm fasting for Lent. I'll be abstaining from any meal of substance until after 3pm each day and meals will exclude meat, dairy, eggs, and sugar. I am allowed to have one or two snack type meals before 3, but it has to be small and can't exceed the substance of my main meal. Usually I snack on dry cereal (Cheerios) if I need to eat something...no more than 1/2 a cup in total.
The money that is saved by following this fast will be given to charity.

I don't practice Lent anymore, but I remember once giving up The Simpsons and another year giving up wrestling. It was hard, but I stuck to it.

No Lent (Lenting?) here.
First time I've read the English name for it actually.

question to you Catholics. What is the point of giving up stuff and eating fish? Why is it only on friday you can't eat meat?

I'm with you there...I forgot about Lent until I saw this thread :(
It's been a while since I've really committed to giving up something for Lent, so I'm going to give up chocolate and observe the no meat on Fridays (something I don't normally do).

Isn't the 40 day Lent fast supposed to symbolize the 40 days Jesus himself fasted after his Baptism? Sorry... Baptist. What say you Catholics?
I'll give up my virginity. But I want it back, okay?

I wouldn't give up pizza if God himself and the mighty Bill Murray both paid me to do so. No way could I go without it.
Lent
Endless supply in my pockets. So weird...
I remember the year I gave up breathing for lent. That didn't work too well. :ohwell:

I'm a former Catholic, and it's supposed to symbolize a sacrifice from what I remember. Since Jesus sacrificed himself on the cross, the giving up of meat and another thing is supposed to sort of be like that. The point is that if Jesus can sacrifice himself on the cross, we can sacrifice something as well. However, I really don't see it as similar to that at all. To me, if you really want to symbolize something like that, I would think it would be akin to jumping in front of someone to save their life or like what soldiers do when they fight. That's the way I look at it anyway.
Good luck to those who are practicing. I'm glad I don't do it anymore though. I just figure there's no point to it anymore since I'm not a believer.

I'm not Catholic, but my church does recognize Lent. (I'm a Methodist). People in my church do normally give up something but don't observe the dietary restrictions. Usually I fast for purification and charity.
It makes me think about people who live like this every day (I used to be that poor) and realize how fortunate I am now.

Really? I thought Lent was just a Catholic thing. My BF's family is also Methodist, but I don't think they observe Lent as far as I know. I guess it just depends on the church or something.

I am a practicing Catholic, and this is what I think the reason is, though I am sure if you ask another Catholic, you might get another answer. You give up something as a way of thanking Jesus for giving up his life on the cross for us. Does giving up chocolate or video games compare to Jesus' sacrafice? Hell no! But it is the thought that counts, our own way of saying thank you.
I am going to not procrastinate. May sound easy to some people, but trust me, this is a big challenge for me.
Ask Alf. He's a cataholic.

Maybe...but the United Methodist Church makes it a point to teach the liturgal (sp?) Seasons. I had to recite them in my confirmation class as a 12 year old...in order. We change the colors in the church acording to the season so it was easy to know what season it is.
We had an ash Wednesday service tonight.....Maunday Thursday and Good Friday are other big ones in this season.

Well, maybe it depends on the people then and whether they choose to observe Lent in that way. I just know my BF's family doesn't do that at all.

not to get too personal, but why did you give up on being a Catholic? I'm seeing alot of people dropping the Christian faith, or I should say the Catholic faith. Catholics aren't Christian.
I mean you don't see jewish, muslim, buddust, people dropping their faith.

Because I don't believe in it anymore. That's why. I just feel that with all the horrible stuff happening in the world that God doesn't really exist. So, I just gave up on believing. To be honest, I'm a lot happier now that I don't believe anymore. I can be myself and do what I want.

I'm a former Mormon, and I'm pretty much agnostic nowadays. So I understand where you're coming from, Bubbly.
My fiance's family is Catholic and they observe Lent each year, and since I enjoy a personal challenge I give something up, too. This year I'm giving up fried foods - which, for me, is really tough!

I've heard arguments that the deification of the Virgin Mary and the Pope amounts to idolatry... but that's a rabbit I'm sure we really don't want to chase.

But catholics are the original Christians, how much more Christian can you get? Sure, they love their Virgin Mary and the Pope but more than anything else they love Jesus. You know, Christ.

I don't think any modern Christian church can actually trace their "bloodlines" back to the cross, and that includes Catholics. There are some sects between the 1st century church and Catholicism that are down right wonky.

i decided last minute to give-up something. I don't belong to a group that observes lent, but I heard about it on the radio and thought....that is a good idea. I know what it is, but just never think about it.

Here in Norway protestants are often referred generally as Christians, while other Christian groups are referred as their proper group name. Could be she meant something like that?

Hey, that's awesome, Falconhood. Good luck with that.
I want to be strong, I guess it's my competitive nature. I want to be better than others, and this sounds like a bet, or a gamble...either way, it can only make me stronger than just being laissez-faire for the next 40 days.
I've already used my time more wisely that is normally used for the missing element.
I've read my old comics and started clearing out lots of them, yesterday, Saturday, I was surprised at how much I was getting done.
So, the new amount of time I have is really cool.
Maybe next Saturday I'll build a model kit, or if it's nice, go to a park.

oh! you are not doing it. I just responded, but didn't read all the fluff on these 2 pages. Not much actually talking about who/what on Lent, just about what is lent (which is what Wikipedia is for)
no meat on Fridays (something I don't normally do).
I forgot about this too. What do vegetarians do about Fridays?
I used to date a Catholic Girl back in College, about 20 years ago, so my traditional religious stuff is rusty.
I mean you don't see jewish, muslim, buddust, people dropping their faith.
I do.
I can be myself and do what I want.
so, was your religion like oppressive? That's a drag. And not drag as in colorful and fun RuPaul drag.
I enjoy a personal challenge I give something up, too. This year I'm giving up fried foods - which, for me, is really tough!
That's me. Anything you can do, I can do better.

No, I was raised Catholic. As I grew older, I just began to see things in a different light and realized that I didn't need religion in my life anymore, so I just gave it up. Like I said, I'm happier now without it. I can do what I want when I want and don't have to answer to anyone but myself when it comes to religious stuff. I do believe in evolution, reincarnation, and karma, but that's as far as my beliefs go. Other than that, the only thing I need to believe in is myself.

I'm sure Madonna can give you the name of the doctor she went to.

Exactly. It's their saint and statue worship. Many Christians in my church consider Catholics as little better than pagans. There has always been some rivalry between Catholics and Christians where I live. My father has always been kind of loud about it. I was sort of brought up in my house hold to make the distinction between the two. I still slip up sometimes and it's gotten my in some bad arguments for being "ignorant" which I kind of agree with. It's hard to break away from veiws you were brought up with.
I do not get the bad blood between Catholics and Protestants, they both worship God, whats the big deal?
