I stopped buying comics some time ago when I realized I had boxes of them that I never even look at. Too much hassle, removing from the bag, reading one at a time. I still buy plenty of the collected books. My question is, having purchased the ultimate collected volume a couple years ago (with the first, what, 10 issues?) is there any reason I should buy the first or second volume that IDW is putting out? I admit I'm a bit out of the loop on the comics.

As a side note, I read the recent IDW paperback and can't wait until they release the next one. I've been reading posts here and there that allude to what happens and it's very confusing without knowing the full context.

As far as I can tell, you won't have any reason to get Ultimate Collections 1 or 2. But, I'm not paying really close attention to the comics. So, you really need a third opinion. :P

As far as the IDW series TPBs go, this is what the schedule looks like right now, according to Amazon:
12JUL03 TMNT: Micro Series, Vol. 1 TPB
12JUL17 TMNT Vol. 2: Enemies Old, Enemies New TPB

And, some Mirage collections you might wanna keep an eye out for:
12JUN19 TMNT Classics, Vol. 1 TPB (first batch of guest stories, I think)
12JUL03 TMNT: The Ultimate Collection Vol. 3 HC (#12, 14, 15, 17 & 19-21)

The biggest reason is if you want a nice hardcover edition to display and even read without breaking the spine.

Another reason is the Ultimate Edition Volume 2's cover will complement Volume 1's by connecting artwork.

And as Gobo mentioned, IDW is also releasing trade versions of Mirage Volume 1, Tales of the TMNT, Archie's TMNT Adventures.

If sales are steady the plan is to work across ALL volumes and eventually collect everything.

If you're looking at content rather than superficial appearance, the Ultimate hardcovers from IDW have annotations and color cover galleries while the previous release lacks these bonus features.

That's about it, though. The scanned page quality remains identical between the two editions, FYI, so the actual quality of the reproduced artwork is not superior in the IDW hardcovers than the Mirage release.

Thank you all very much! I'm mainly concerned with just the stories within. I may end up buying vol. 1 & 2 anyway, though, because I like uniformity, if the plan to continue releasing follows through.

12JUL03 TMNT: The Ultimate Collection Vol. 3 HC (#12, 14, 15, 17 & 19-21)

Why no 13, 16, or 18?

Why no 13, 16, or 18?

They're being collected in the TMNT Classic Collection Vol. 1. They aren't included in the Ultimate hardcovers because those are only for stories Eastman and Laird produced.

Wasnt Eastman involved w/ 18? The others no but what about 18?

Yes, but he means both Eastman & Laird, not one or the other.

So then I pose this question:

Number 17 was by Eastman and Talbot.

Why is this included?

Oh, I know! They did it to make The Fifth Turtle ask questions. :D Mission accomplished, Eastman & co... ;)

Ahhh so that was the reason.

I wondern if one of the IDW staff members that frequent the drome can answer this question.

They're going with E&L stuff that's part of an overall continuity. I don't agree with their choices and the order they're releasing stuff, but an issue like #18 is kind of a fun adventure story to the side—if left in, people might wonder, "Why the heck did they go to China when all this other stuff's going on?"

Never bothered me none and it's one of the best Turtles issues, so I dunno... It's a weird release method, but at least everything's getting collected one way or another.
