View Full Version : Future IDW one-shots

Won't mention who mentioned it accidentally to me, just in case, although I can't imagine them getting into trouble for letting it slip, but you never know...
Anyhow, the next set of one-shots are being thought through and will apparently cover Splinter, Casey and April. Might be a fourth. Nice to know that everyone might get a fair crack of the whip, and that they won't just be about the turtles.

Hmm... I still think it's a little premature to go with an April One-Shot at this point. I would prefer she be fully integrated into the turtles' lives and familiar with their rogues.
I mean, what kind of plot can you give her at this point?
Tentative Synopsis

Tentative Synopsis
Well, let's remember that it looks like April is set to finally meet the turtles in #10 "as their salvation." So by the time her Micro issue comes out, it won't be until at LEAST September, but probably even longer since Bobby has stated the Micros won't be monthly. That's more than 4 issues of story for April to entangle herself with the turtles. Heck, even if they did it right after #10, there's plenty to fill 22 pages of her simply dealing with discovering them, similar to Volume 1 #11. I'm guessing that although Casey came to accept their existence pretty easily, April is going to be a different story. Besides, even if she hasn't been too developed by then, that's kind of the point of these one-shots.
Or maybe it will be about her transition from science to journalism. :)

I am up for anything Stan Sakai does...
Splinter suits best probably, yeah...
Also i would want a Rat King one shot if he ever gets into the IDW-verse and drawn by an artist whose style is both dark and sarcastic... Kelley Jones , Sam Kieth or Simon Bisley would make me ultra happy.

Don't forget possible mean spirited sorority recruitment, a roommate who constantly leaves a sock on the door, and the freshman 15 (the jeans fit just fine in issue one)!
I think by the time this issue comes out, she'll be introduced to the Turtles. So the balancing college with a crazy secret life might make it similar to the Stephanie Brown Batgirl series (which would be a great thing).
Actually, an April O'Neil comic that was similar in tone to the previous Batgirl series would be something I'd want at least a 12 issue limited series of. :)

Great news! I can't wait to read Splinter's one shot. Honestly though, I could do without Casey & April (unless Ross does the art of course!) I'd rather see a Baxter Stockman and Shredder one-shot, respectively. Or even Old Hob.

if was in charge of an April one-shot it would be mostly her doing everyday mundane stuff, which i think would be cool as a contrast to the Turtles' world, a nice way to temper the fantastical elements which i always felt April's presence did. i think April trying to get work done while the Turtles and Casey are always barging in would be cool, or in issue #5 it's mentioned she's going home for Christmas somewhere upstate so maybe the farmhouse could be introduced that way.
and it would be cool to further April's self-defense stuff and have her enter some kind of low-level fighting tournament at a local dojo or something and she has to figure out some killer MMA hold to beat her opponent! i like the idea that Tom set up that the Foot break-in at Baxter's lab was a wake up call and pushed her into being more physical in order to defend herself.

No offense to Brian Lynch, but I really really want Tom to write any future Micros. And I want a Shredder issue more than any other character.
But, I'm pretty pumped to see David Peterson's take on Splinter. That'll be great.

I love stories that are from the average person's POV (like Marvels and Gotham Central). Stories where the usual heroes just drop in now and then and the story is told from another perspective. An April story like that would be great.
I'm now imagining April O'Neil going up against Cobra Kai in Karate Kid. :)
Maybe there's an evil sorority of martial artists, and the head of the sorority would be like Johnny, giving April a hard time at the dance. Then Splinter would teach her the crane kick...I'll stop now.

I'm not surprised that we would see more one shots. It makes since when you think about it that there are so many characters and only so much can be covered in the main series. As for April, as long as it doesn't turn her into a drawing I'd be cool with just about anything.

The mousers should have a one shot... They are all after all the most misbegotten and misunderstood characters in the TMNT universe.
CyberCubed

The one-shots are definitely needed, in the main series there's not even enough time to explore each character with everything going on.
These characters definitely need to be fleshed out more. If the IDW series was the very first Turtle series ever, nobody would have any attachment to the characters because we barely know them.

That's exactly how I felt Tristan Jones' & Paul Harmon's Tales issues were like. Everything from the POV of the cops and it worked really well. Maybe not as well as Gotham Central, but that dude can write!
Still, having said that, I am really enjoying Tom Waltz' style, even if his dialogue comes off pretty corny sometimes, especially with the excessive use of "bro." But the juggling between multiple perspectives and storylines is done so well, there's no denying the skill involved. That's another reason I'm loving these straight-forward one-shots, as it really puts these characters in focus as opposed to the main series which we can see a much bigger story. The two series in conjunction is the perfect balance.
The 4rth should be shredder
I feel that there is a strong possibility for a Shredder/Oroku Saki Micro-Series. Next to Splinter, there is no other character who has as strong of a connection to the turtles than him. Anyone else would seem out of place to be put on the same tier of importance as Splinter, Casey, and April. It would also be a unique villain Micro. Then, the next tier or batch of Micros can include characters like Krang, Stockman, etc.

I think I would definitely enjoy a shredder/oroku saki or a "foot" in general one-shot. I wouldnt mind seeing why Saki even joined the foot or how he rose to power.
Or
I wouldnt mind seeing the foot through the eyes of random foot soldier.

I will l-o-v-e seeing his interpretation of the Shredder!
All this talk of the micros officially continuing (I had asked Bobby about it last year and he stated the possibility), I really hope we eventually see the Fugitoid and get a micro with him too (the original Fugitoid one-shot could in essence be considered a micro).
Awesome-I'd read a micro about anyone in the TMNT universes-April, Splinter, Casey, Old Hob, Shredder, Bebop, Ricksteady...a random mouser...anyone. Shoot, sign me up for a monthly based on the pizza guy.

I love having the micro-series! I'm definitely up to see it run casually alongside the main series.
A few things I would like to see from the micro-series...
- More great characters from the tmnt universe getting their time to shine. Yes, The Shredder is a definite must.
- To possibly read some "Year one" stories. If there is a rich story that can be told in the first 15 months of the turtles mutation, the red bandana's could once again be brought out.
- Ambiguous future story-lines! Yes, there definitely needs to be a lot more developing of the characters, story, and universe before this can happen. That being said, I love the way Mirage would hop around in the time-line of the tmnt. Piecing together the mystery of the tmnt's future, is one of the most rewarding things in the Mirage series. I'd love to see some time-line hopping here as well!
- Also, I wouldn't mind having these released the same day that the regular issues come out, even if it they only come out every two or three months. From what little I understand, comic deadlines are a hectic thing, and this could be far from possible, but I wanted to share my thoughts anyway.
These are just some personal hopes of mine. I'm excited to see what the team comes up with!

Peterson's covers are fantastic, this is great news to that there will be more one shots. I think a "Rise of The Foot" would be a great story for a one shot, and then have both a Splinter and an Oraku Saki one shot spin out of those and have it done like issue #5, part flashback part present day for each.

Thanks man! Glad you dug those! I'd love to get back on that bandwagon at some point and finish those stories, but I have zero idea where things stand with the Mirage stuff like that. Rat King and Leatherhead are practically shoe-in's to appear, they along with Baxter appear in almost every universe. And obviously Tom Waltz is bringing in all the most important characters from TMNT history.
The other mutants are a lesser possibility, but they brought in Slash so who knows.

Neutrinos and Angel definitely. I don't think there is enough depth to Slash for a whole micro. He and Rocksteady and Bebop are just filler villains as far as I'm concerned. Nice to look at, with brute strength but no brains.

Bebop/Rocksteady really need to be fully fleshed out, I can't see it happening much in the main volume.

I would like to see more one-shots of the turtles, especially with the city fall arc coming up. It would be nice to see (if it doesn't show up in the main story or in secret history) the inner thinking that eventually leads Leo to change teams. Seeing how each of his brothers reacts would be nice too.
We will probably get all this in the main publication, but these things are usually presented in a very compressed way and might leave some aspects of the ordeal unexplored. But who knows? I mean the arc has 7 parts if I'm not mistaken, further explanation may not be needed. Either that or the whole Leo changing sides ends up being just a cover to get more info on the foot and everything I just said becomes irrelevant :trazz:
ToTheNines
02-17-2013, 12:44 PM
Well the plan is to run the villain micros out in consecutive months, so the last one should be out in July. And City Fall is 7 parts, therefor it will run to November. I'd imagine IDW will still try to have a companion book running along side City Fall (even though we'll have New Animated Adventures by then).
So yeah, hopefully we'll get more Turtle oneshots.

I agree that a second set of Turtles micros would work well after the villain series. Am I the only one who, as I've mentioned before, would love to see a Donnie issue pick up where the Infestation issues left off? The longer it takes to link that story to IDW canon, the more likely it will never happen. I would love to see Donnie continue his research. There were no many rats in those issues, maybe he could discover the Rat King, or at least evidence of his existence. Possibly a Rat King full page reveal on the last page.
Thoughts?
CyberCubed
03-02-2013, 10:57 AM
They'll probably reference the Infestation story eventually, even if its just a throwaway line.
But I agree a second set of micros for the Turtles for Year Two would be ideal. They especially need to give Raph another solo issue given he should still feel like a stranger among his brothers.
thelouisguy
03-03-2013, 09:02 PM
I hope we get another round of Turtle Micros. Or maybe some team-up issues.
Some team-up issues could focus on:
* Casey and Raph
* Donnie and Mikey
* Leo and Donnie
* Raph and Mikey
* Donnie and Casey
Casey and Raph
This is the obvious choice except we've already seen it, but I would not oppose another Casey and Raph adventure.
Donnie and Mikey
This could be a funny issue with Donnie and Mikey joking around. I've always liked their relationship.
Leo and Donnie
At first I thought I should remove this one because they do not have the same relationship in the IDWverse as they used to (they are more like Leo and Raph now) but an issue with them disagreeing and trying to convince each other that they are right could provide a lot of insight into these brothers.
Raph and Mikey
We have seen them out together before but I would love an issue of Raph explaining to Mikey what it was like when they were separated.
Donnie and Casey
I love their banter and back-and-forth hilarity. After issue 19, it might be better to have a Donnie Fugitoid issue, but we do not know what will happen to Fugitoid if Krang gets his tentacles on him.
