View Full Version : Could SotO be salvaged?

Fan-edits seem to be popular these days (well, they were at some point in recent history). Could Secret of the Ooze be re-cut in such a way to make it a little more palatable for our older sensibilities? I wonder...

*Cutting out some of the more goofier parts of fight scenes. Some. Not all.

*Maybe some strategic editing of the club scene. In other words, no Vanilla Ice.

This is just some pipe dreaming. I haven't watched the film in a while so I don't know how plausible it would be to do this stuff. I just bought the movies online so I'll get back to this later in the week.

I wouldn't change a thing. Trying to take something that was made with kids in mind and making it "more adult" hardly works out.

I don't really have much problem with it, either. I just think it would be an interesting experiment in editing.

I usually don't go that kind of humor, but I "LOL"-ed, as the kids say.

In terms of editing, you would be alright with the removal of the "Ninja Rap." But you'd need the right program to take that out without affecting the rest of the audio. These days, I'm sure that's quite possible.

On the other hand, as we've learned with George Lucas and his re-edits, better to leave well enough alone.

Not everybody likes SoTO these days, but it cutting stuff out of it probably wouldn't improve it any unless you really hate the Ninja Rap scene. The fight scenes wouldn't benefit much through editing, since the turtles really don't use any actual weapons other than Donatello's bo and Leonardo's... eh... tonfas.

After 20 years, it is what it is.

Right. I don't hate the Ninja Rap, myself, as it's grown on me. I definitely can't bring myself to hate it, these days, since Vanilla Ice had said he enjoyed doing his scene. I suppose the Ninja Rap is often selected as an easy weak spot to edit it out, but that would also damage the charm. Same with Shredder's "Babies! Arggh!!!" I enjoy it far more than I should.

At least, they threw punches, which is good enough for me.

SotO was my favorite of the 3 movies as a kid... I'd feel weird watching an edited version.

I've always wondered how the movie would be if Keno was replaced by Casey. Raph and Casey going undercover as Foot recruits would have worked much better IMO.

You can say Casey got a part-time job in the pizza shop...although you'd have to completely change that scene where Keno sees the Turtles for the first time.

I think i know where you are coming from. It'd be nice if SOTO kept a similar tone to Steve Baron's film., but like other's have said, I believe taking things away would only make the film worse. I wouldn't mind seeing someone take a crack at it though. Maybe if they went the full mile and switched up the score too, it could make an interesting difference.

I like SOTO the way it is but with so many fan edits of movies online I don't see any problem with some fans wanting to do a fan edit of the movie, in fact isn't there one for no Venus in TNM? I wouldn't care for it, I might watch it once but I don't see any problem with it existing, in fact it's kinda neat having an option, there are definitely parts of TMNT II that flow very well with the mood of the first movie and then there's the wacky parts, so it'd be an interesting fan project.

Um... wouldn't the Foot recognize Casey? And he'd a be a bit too old. Then again they were looking for "anyone with martial arts talent... especially teenagers."

While Casey is missed in SOTO I actually really liked Keno, he didn't suffer like other young turtle sidekick like Zack the fifth turtle or Cody Jones.

Sounds really unnecessary to me. But, if you're really unsatisfied with SotO as-is, go for it. I'd give it a watch... at least once.

Secret of the Ooze definitely had a lot of potential to be a worthy sequel to the first TMNT movie, but I think a lot of that potential went out the window with what was left out of the movie, not necessarily what was left in. I'm not sure with the footage available, if there is a better movie somewhere in there because we still don't have the turtles with their weapons, a compelling story, or a credible threat. Bits could be improved sure, by taking out some of the corny one-liners or cartoony sound effects, but overall it would probably be about the same. Then again, editing is a powerful tool and there are certainly those with more imagination and talent than I, so who knows.

I found it interesting as I watched TMNT III that I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. It's definitely still not very good, and probably still worse than Secret of the Ooze, but not by as much as some would lead you to believe. A return of the weapons was nice, but the goofy parts were so much goofier with an even worse dance scene, cheesier jokes, and even thinner plot. Still, there were some good bits to the score that gave it some nice heavier moments. I guess if you look at it this way, if it weren't for the Steve Barron film to branch off from, the second and third sequels wouldn't have even the few serious moments they did.

The first batch of Foot were arrested. The only person that would recognize him was Tatsu.

Unless some utroms are added in, I think it'd be pointless to touch Secret of the Ooze.

Ooze has it's flaws, but it was still okay. The only thing that bugs me is Tokka and Rahzar thinking Shredder is their mom. It kind of kills how threatening the mutants are supposed to be.

There were still some of that first batch. The recruitment was to bolster their reduced numbers because some were arrested. I mean, they all knew the junk yard was their fall back spot... :P

Prof. Jordan Perry flat out states to the Turtles that he added a retardant to the formula to make Rahzar/Tokka less deadly than they should have been.

At the time, when the movie came out and I was the target audience (a seven-year-old boy), I thought it was a really fun movie! I knew it wasn't as serious as the first one, but I still liked it. No amount of cutting is going to change it. Highlander 2 is still Highlander 2 no matter how they cut it. Same goes for this, only this was made really well considering the audience they had in mind.

I don't think it'd even be necessary for Casey or anyone to go undercover. Just have Raph and maybe Casey take to the streets to find Foot members and either capture and interrogate a low level member or follow them back to their hideout. As they're scouting around they're discovered and Raph captured.

You can say Casey got a part-time job in the pizza shop...although you'd have to completely change that scene where Keno sees the Turtles for the first time.

Worst fight scene in TMNT history. I'd take the club scene over that any day.

The only thing I'd change would be the final battle with Super Shredder. The turtles simply running to a dock and having the abandoned building fall on Super Shredder is so lame, I'd at least add the turtles throwing Shredder into the river or even burning him above the pile of fallen debris. I actually found that lamer than the nightclub scene, where at least it goes from fun to serious. And that Vanilla Ice song is now old enough to be considered "oldies" with a flashback feel, believe it or not. Without it, why show that "Ninja Rap is Born" by Splinter? It represents when rap was "fun", not corporate and crappy.

To even try reminds me of the "Batman & Robin: De-Assified" cut, which ended up with like a 30 minute movie.
