View Full Version : Shout! Factory obtains rights to Next Mutation

I didn't know if anyone else happened to catch this or not, but it was buried deep in an article about Shout! getting the DVD rights to most of the Power Rangers series.

http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Mighty-Morphin-Power-Rangers-DVDs-Planned/16646

"However, the deal DOES include other Saban programs, including Big Bad Beetleborgs (a.k.a. Beetleborgs Metallix), V.R. Troopers, and the short-lived live-action show Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation. The HMM story by John Latchem reports that the "Initial rollout plans for the Saban are slated to begin in summer 2012, according to Shout! Factory, with single-season sets to start and potentially complete-series sets in the future."

I so will be getting this when it comes out. It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. No worse then some of the OT seasons.

Yeah, I put this up in the Power Rangers thread we have here. I was just about to bring up the fact SF can release NM when I saw your thread.

NM's a peice of s*it, but at least this'll shut the completists up.

Yeah, real smart there.

4kids shot that to hell themselves though by releasing 4 ep disks and season sets in parts. They saturated the market and put out tons of the same things on multiple disks. From a financial standpoint it doesn't make sense for them to put it out.

TNM hasn't been released on DVD yet state side. For them looking at it, they aren't going to have to compete nearly as heavily with people already having it. Now if people will actually buy it that's another mater.

I'll get it because I don't think it is nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Yes it's goofy, yes it's cheesy, but not any more so then the later seasons of the OT. I think a lot of it is that people saw the OT as children and still look at it with those kinds of eyes, where as TNM was seen as older children/adults. Taste changes. Those same slapstick antics aren't as appealing as they used to be.

TNM was seen as childish drivel. Which it was. It wasnt for "older children/adults", stop talking through your rose-tinted arse just because you want to justify you liking a show everyone with good taste hates.

Yeah, real smart there.

I know this is likely an impossible request, but just try to stop saying stupid things.

Shout picked up Power Rangers, TNM just happened to be included. It had nothing to do with picking TNM over the 4Kids series. And I already have the 4Kids series on DVD, so I would much rather get TNM.

This isn't the place to be insulting people's opinions just because they aren't the same as yours. This isn't a "Discuss the merits of The Next Mutation" topic.

The 4kids DVDs went to hell during Seasons 3 and 4 with episodes constantly out of order. It's impossible for a newcomer to follow the series without and episode list handy.

Most of these DVDs were aimed at children and were not proper sets until the last batch. Shout giving the entire series proper DVD sets is something many hope for as they release old Nick properties to DVD.

Way to not read what I said. What I said was that we saw TNM as older children, which is different then seeing it as kids. When it came out those of us in our teens weren't it's target audience. But then to those who are just full of hate it's hard to actually pay attention to others meaning.

Like it's been stated they didn't pick up TNM, they picked up the license to Saban Brands live action Toku stuff which includes PR's, BBB's, VRT's and TNM. And yes if they're smart they'd wait to release TNM until the Nick show or movie comes out, also this states they have the license to release the DVD sets not that they are planning to release them.

Too bad it won't have the original theme song but at least it's getting released on DVD, it'd be nice if they included the Power Rangers episode where they crossed over but I'm not counting on it.

Shout would be the perfect company for proper sets of the 4kids series. The old DVD's are out of print and enough time has passed for the market to be ready for new sets, especially for people who never watched or before or kids who grew up with it.

I am watching the 4kids series right now on DVD and I have to flip between 5 different discs just to watch the next episode in proper order. Plus BTTS and Turtles Forever need a proper release in the US anyway so the whole series was a mess on DVD.

Hopefully this can be corrected in the near future.

I just got my set of the original 4kids Season 1 & 2 DVDs. What I've noticed is that the "official" order was if you stack the DVDs side-by-side, is Leonardo (corresponds to Season 1, Part 1 on the 2007 release), Raphael (Season 1, Part 2 on the 2007 release), Michelangelo, and Donatello (with carries over into Season 3). The problem is beginning with the Ultimate Ninja DVD (Volume 11), the episodes start to go out of order, and continue through the end of Season 3, thus the confusion. I still feel the display on the side with all the turtles visible is cool.

The Next Mutation shouldn't be that difficult since it was only one season. All it takes is one four-disc set to cover this package for The Next Mutation. However, since The Next Mutation wasn't as popular, it would help if some bonus features in terms of understanding the show's development notes would help. Too bad the lack of Sentai footage wasn't the cause of this show's cancellation.

Speaking as someone who is finally getting around to acquiring 4Kids Pokemon DVDs, I actually don't mind the piecemeal approach. I currently can't afford the big season-by-season DVD sets. At least, this way, I can just focus on the specific episode sets I want at a reasonable price and work my way with the rest later. Plus, the DVD coding is rather decent when not compressed with one too many episodes. While I would prefer the episodes-by-season format for obvious reasons, the other way isn't so insufferable, either. Admittedly, that is my personal opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

Anyway, Shout Factory is a pretty competent DVD company, so this is good news on many levels. As for NM, I'm glad it's also part of the deal, if only for the sake of completion. I don't recall, but did it ever had a prior home video release?

Shout!'s season, or half season, sets aren't that much more expensive than four episode disks are. Four episode disk volumes are usually about $10 each. I picked up all of the Transformers and G.I. Joe sets, and they were each about $20. So on average, those sets featured about 24 episodes per set. So you could pay $10 for four episodes, or spend an extra $10 for an extra 20 episodes. It's well worth the money.

No, it's reasonable from what I've read. It just depends on how much money that can be spared on hand, what the Suggested Retail Price with each company and other factors. I am opting for more animated fare, these days, anyway, as it is less expensive. (Plus, I want to acquire them before they go out-of-print, and the price really goes up.)

I'm just saying that, personally speaking, the 4Kids way to DVD distribution is not a bad one for me and my interests.

Uh, no. The OT always had this "sarcastic wit" about it, that even if the plots were ridiculous, you still felt like everything made sense and had things older fans enjoyed.

Next Mutation had Raphael being chased around by a gorilla for an entire episode. It had Silver explain what a "rhetorical question" was about 5 times to his idiotic henchmen.

Next Mutation is almost like the 60's era Batman show in a way, except not as entertaining.

You call it sarcastic wit, I call it bad writing. There are times where the OT left me scratching my head going "what the hell?" Now granted TNM did the same thing. I'm just saying a lot of people are choosing to view things with the rosy colored glasses of their childhood. There is nothing wrong with that.

Then I imagine you missed the entire point of the original series charm. There's a difference between being dumbed down kiddie material and what I am talking about. Next Mutation had a few moments of glory in an otherwise dumbed down kiddie series.

Swap the Turtles out for any generic protagonists, and it'd be just another goofy live-action series that nobody would care about.

Memorable live-action adventure series Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation debuted in 1997 on popular kids network. The series continued the fun-filled saga of Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo, four genetically mutated turtles who have transformed into human sized, ninja-powered crime fighters living in the sewers of New York City. Soon the Ninja Turtles' world that they have come to know and love will change. If you thought Shredder was bad, wait until you meet the newest NT foe--Dragon Skull! It will take all the power of our four reptile heroes to combat this new villain, including the help from a new ninja turtle named Venus De Milo!

Personally I always thought TNM looked ****ing awesome, but I never got a chance to see it until 2 years ago. Then again I was a kid and loved PRs so an idea of a live action turtles show seemed amazing and they toys looked awesome to me as well. And yeah the reputation definitely has foundation but it's nowhere near as bad as I thought it'd be. If I had seen it as a kid I would've loved the show.

Exactly, all this bad rep that TNM hurts the chances of ever seeing those characters again but TNM really did introduce some great rogues, I'd love to see most of them in a new incarnation where they are handled to all the potential TNM failed to tap.

I honestly don't know if the Next Mutation is a dvd set I'd really be all that interested in. I was about 16 years old when the series aired. Any new kid who likes the new TMNT show and see's this may want it, that is the main target audience, same for the OT releases not actual fans of the old show since they'd never support the sales. It will sell fine, not like it matters if it doesn't, it'll be released as a complete series likely and even if it bombs we got all the series. Shout Factory is very fan friendly, if we go to their forums we could ask and let them know what we'd want for TNM DVD, I'm guessing it won't but we can ask about the original opening. I don't really know what else TNM had but if it had original bumpers or some unaired pilot or deleted scenes they may be able to get it, or at least ask for it.

Really? You pick an infintile reason like "They've got more fur than any Turtle ever had" to hate on an otherwise entertaining show? Shows why some Turtle fans really deserve to be ridiculed.

Why not go to Shout forums and ask for special features? Shout always tries the best to make a complete set for fans with special features and gets involved with the community, so why not go over and voice our opinion< I mean we'd definitely like the Power Rangers cross over episode, but why not interviews or retrospective of the turtles or some information of how the show came to be, it's all possible and it doesn't hurt to ask, we really don't have much information on TNM and this DVD set might be our chance to get that.

I wish Shout would actually release the 4kids series on DVD. Considering they release all of Nick's old shows there is a shot.

Not only that, Power Rangers is getting a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to Lost Galaxy box set basically around 350 episode mega box set with bonus features, with another mega box set with the other 350 episodes probably coming soon after. Even for smaller releases like Captain N and the Mario cartoons they would listen and go to fan forums for input for fans on what exactly they wanted in the releases and try to get everything out there, if Shout handled the OT I'm sure we would've gotten better quality transfers, less episodes per discs and tons of features like the Turtle Tips, same with the 4kids show and other stuff. Counting Lionsgate has the OT it might not be possible for Shout to ever release them but the 4Kids show may have a chance.

But they do have The Next Mutation, it might not be much but we can still show Shout that the turtle fandom is as enthusiastic as other fandoms like Transformers, Power Rangers and even smaller fandoms like Captain flippin N, I mean we are definitely much bigger than that fandom. We have a chance of getting some awesome bonus features in the set if we only show that we want the set properly, Shout always tries to please fans, we could get much more from the set than a barebones release which might happen if we don't hsow them we care. Shout could dig up footage for the show, make interviews if he see's that would get fans buy it, a few shun the show but maybe a few would buy it to know how exactly the show was created. Or heck I'm sure Shout would love to put the Power Rangers crossover in there for completion ake but they don't know they ever crossed over with Power Rangers in Space, they need us the fans to let them know.

Jester
05-10-2012, 10:10 PM
Were these features things that were already produced, or did Shout! create them? Heck, if they could interview Kevin on how the idea came to be. That'd be interesting. Doesn't he have concept art for that as well?

Shout! go all the way to do exclusive interviews and documentaries for stuff like Jem and Sonic SATAM. There great at it.

However, as good as they are, Shout! are a bit of a budget company, so there scope is limited in what they can do. The Power Rangers fans are going to learn that the hard way, I doubt 80% of the extras they want will be on the megaset coming out...even if Shout! are catering the extras to the hardcore collector fan (the bonus content on the megaset will only be availible to TimeLife customers, and won't be on the regular retail releases)

Next Mutation is out on DVD in Region Two countries, and Power Rangers has, outside of Operation Overdrive, never had a complete season set release in the States until now. Before this they had pretty much only enjoyed DVD releases that barely completed a specific season.

Shout is indeed a budget company but they can easily put an episode of PRiS on the set and do a quick interview, we won't get the most amazing bonus features but we can get something much more than a barebones release if we make our fandom be heard.

With Shout! you get what you pay for. As much I'd like to see extras with allot of there DVD releases, I'm just happy to have the the complete seasons / series without breaking the bank.
If anything I end up buying more of Shouts dvd's just because there at least releasing full seasons / sets.

Power Rangers was the most important part of that deal, so once they get the huge Time Life boxset together, they might shift some focus to the other shows they acquired.

If Shout has the license to a property, it gets released. It's only a matter of when. As a dvd distributor, they don't pay for the licenses to shows and then sit on them.

Shout! hasn't said a peep about it. They'll release it, I'm sure, but there is no release date and I'd imagine they're doing a lot of work on their Power Rangers DVDs.

they're doing a huge boxset for Power Rangers, spanning from MMPR all the way to Lost Galaxy, so it might not take to long to get NM out at that rate, specially if the next PR boxset would cover Light Speed Rescue to RPM or something

veemonjosh

But if Shout plans on releasing all of Power Rangers before Next Mutation, it'll be quite some time.

No one said they'd release all of Power Rangers before Next Mutation. It's just that they want to get the bulk (no pun intended) of Power Rangers out before focusing on any of the shorter series they got with it.

Time Life's set gets 7 seasons out of the way (and the longest seasons of the show at that), and then they just have to split that up for shorter sets for casual consumer (meaning a large amount of work is already done for them). If they put together a set for the following 10 seasons (which oddly enough come out to be about the same length as the first 7), it probably won't come out until about a year later (just in time for Power Rangers' 20th anniversary).

They could easily release all of Next Mutation in one go by the end of next summer. And unlike Power Rangers, not a whole lot of effort would need to be done with special features, since Next Mutation is even a trivial footnote in the TMNT fanbase. The most work they'd have to do is get an interview with someone (most likely Kevin Eastman), and hopefully throw on the Power Rangers crossover episode.

CyberCubed
05-30-2012, 07:00 PM
Agreed, they can release all 26 episodes on one DVD set release.

I hoped we'd have it this year for Christmas since its a standalone separate release.

Between 100% of the original cartoon and Next Mutation on DVD, as well as all 4 movies on blu-ray, the only thing else we need is for Nick to re-release the entire 4kids series on DVD in proper order.

God I hope Shout! Factory gets the license to the 4kids TMNT series.
