I work as an internet shill. I weasel my way into online communities of varying types and sneakily attempt to sway opinions on different products. I also write a lot of fake reviews for products on websites to artificially boost scores/product review averages. 8)

Sounds like an interesting career field. How does one go about getting in on that?

I also work with computers. I'm a computer operator for a large, Arkansas based department store chain. From 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM 3 nights a week I make sure that certain processes run correctly. It takes about 5 minutes out of every hour, thus I have 55 minutes every hour to sit here and watch videos and type messages like this one. it's kinda dull, but hey it pays the bills...barely. I say that because I need to switch insurance plans. Right now I pay almost $800 a month. I'm hoping to cut that down by a couple hundred.

Well, they've slowed down on lay-offs right now. After 8 months of it, it SHOULD be done.. I'm just so stressed with this job that it's affecting my health. A majority in our department is on some sort of anti-depressant (except me *knocks on wood*).

There's no way of climbing the ladder, and the quotas and paperwork required are ridiculous. The building itself is horrible - the air is so recycled and thick that you get sick just walking INTO the building, and then they keep it about 55 degrees, no matter if it's the heat of summer or the worst winter on record. You should not have to sit at your desk in parkas and sleeping bags to get your work done... [/rant]

So I'm looking around for something else.

I was most recently A Game Designer (Creative Development/Publisher side) for Disney Interactive Studios. I've been in the game industry in various roles for the last 10 years.

About this time last year I was laid off with about 600 other people. Between my severance and unemployment, my wife and I decided it was totally doable for me to go back for my Bachelors before returning to the game industry (I'm not wiping my butt with $100 bills, but we aren't destitute either). So I'm in the middle of that. I am a year in with a year to go.

So I guess my current profession is full time student :-)

I don't think it's fair to bash Gobo like that. There are people who can't work because of documented disabilities who are on assistance because of it. My BF won't be able to work because he's going to be completely blind, so he's on assistance because of it. And since I don't know Gobo that well, I'm not going to judge him for receiving assistance because I don't know what it's for.

No. I got f*cked up for almost a year and didn't pull sh*t because I felt like I didn't deserve it. I was incapable of doing the kind of work I did, so I got a desk job in the intervening period. My fiance was injured and couldn't work for months and didn't attempt to grub money from the government. My father has been cripple since he was a teenager and has worked every day of his life. My mother was hospitalized with an illness that could keep her sitting on the couch with money rolling in every day, but she still works because she wouldn't feel right taking free money for people who actually NEED IT.

The sad truth is that most people abuse the system because they're too lazy to get out of their own way. I have nothing but disdain for those people.

I'm not saying Gobo is necessarily that person, but if he/she/it is sitting around on Ninja Turtles forums all day and cracking wise about never working, chances are they aren't so debilitated that they can't do ANYTHING.

BubblyShell22
03-21-2012, 04:06 PM
But Gobo did say that he had a doctor to confirm it, so it's probably a real disability. Now, if Gobo hadn't mentioned the doctor, that would be a different story.

I do agree that there are people out there who take advantage of the government who don't need it, and that's wrong.

(...) is a point of ellipsis- it can be used as a place holder when the writer wants to deliberately leave out information... it also indicates that there is an unfinished thought or that a pause would be present if the written word was read aloud... it is often utilized when a vast topic change is occurring and in creative works, it can be useful in implying sarcasm or even an alternative meaning to the entire work...

I don't see how anyone is picking on Gobo. His laid back, sunglasses on attitude about not working was a springboard to debate about the abuse of both short and long term disability.

A girlfriend of mine who used to work at Hobby Lobby with me did have, over the past decade, have a number of health problems crop up, the worst of which was kidney failure (she's had transplants) and has been in and out of the hospital a number of times for her various health problems, and is now living in a nursing home. Her only vice is cigarette smoking, and she did try to give that up but she ended up feeling depressed afterward-no real surprise when she's done that since she was seven years old.

As might be guessed, she's genuinely unable to work. However, she herself knows that yes, there is a lot of welfare fraud out there, and she has seen it.

By day I'm a data analyst for a cancer research study that focuses primarily on inoperable brain tumors.

By night I'm an assistant science teacher.

A couple of times a year I'm employed by the city to babysit a polling location.

Oh, and I wrangle alligators on the weekend.

Busy bee there

My closests friends here know I'm disabled, but I am going to school to work on my music aspirations. You know, being a composer/producer and the likes.

Good luck dude

I sell carpets, vinyl, laminate and beds to people for a living. I work six days a week and it is commission based. I don't particularly like it, but its a living and it keeps me going...

i'd hate to live off of commission alone, unless it's damn good commission

Its not the worst, I get a basic rate (works out much the same as minimum wage). I need to take in more than £250 personal sales per day before I get paid commission that day, which is a fairly low target, and I get a £55 bonus for working the 6th day. Being the main saleperson in the store, I get the majority of sales. In quieter months, such as December, or if i've taken holidays then my wage does drop a fair rate which is the biggest downside of the job. I've been there for coming on four years and its never been so low that i've not been able to survive the month...

Screenwriter. Currently getting my first web-series produced. Also working as 1st AD on the production.

Not getting paid a lot, barely covers the bills (we don't have a huge budget or anything), but hey, this thing is gonna get recognized here in Sweden, so hopefully it will open up for bigger and better opportunities.

So, yeah.

We need some subtitles.

Yeah, we didn't feel it necessary to subtitle this one short teaser. I think we'll subtitle the series. I hope so, at least.

can you spill any more details about the project?

It's about three kids who happen to find out that Santa has mysteriously disappeared. He's been kidnapped by a man who wants all the gifts for himself.

And after that kinda obvious beginning, the story takes a few unexpected twists and turns, because unexpected is more fun than obvious :p

It will air for 24 episodes on December 1st-24th (Christmas is celebrated on the 24th here in Sweden).

That's about all I wanna say... and can say, for that matter. :)

ive worked on some good ones actually. the best one IMO, has something to do with a zombie apocalypse........"walking something something" i think its called ;)

i used to work on heroes - before it got canned. the event - before it got canned. i dunno, a ton of others. they all start to blend together at a certain point lol. but definitely a share of dogs that you couldnt pay me to watch. greys anatomy anyone?

generally, the job isnt bad per se. its definitely interesting, and can be fun honestly. but the hours are brutal. and at this point in my life id much rather spend my time with my wife and dog than i would blowing things up :)

Cool, I love The Walking Dead! :)

Yeah, I know a thing or two about brutal hours at this point. I have neither a wife nor a dog, and I LOVE what I do, so most of the time it's fine, but then there are those few days where I'd rather just do some ******, uninteresting work and don't have a care in the world when I get home :p

Some people think the movie/TV-industry is all fun, but I've come to realize that you really need a passion for it to be able to stand it. It's kind of a love/hate-thing. I'm just happy I have that passion :)

very much correct about the passion aspect. if you dont have it, you wont survive. if you dont me asking, how old are you?

screenwriter, yea? hows that treating you?

I always enjoy seeing folks who work in the entertainment industry. It's a "secret" wish I've always harbored - working in film/TV. Never tried to follow through on it, though.

I sell Hyundais! Love those cars, and like Pickleweed said, it pays the bills and lets me buy stuff I don't need, hehe! Sometimes I think it'd be nice to have a "normal" type job with a dependable income, but there's a LOt of freedoms the retail car industry affords.

Long ass hours, indeed, but if you put forth even a *little* bit of effort, you'll make a decent income; like with just about anything, you do have to have some passion to it.

It gets in your blood after a while, for sure. And, in a weird way, I get to "act" because there's a bit of showmanship to selling. The first thing you'll learn in sales is that it's not price that sells, it's the person doing the selling. ;)

I love it! Although there's still a lot for me to learn. Still finding my way. But I know all the basics and I've learned a lot when working on '24 Dagar'.

Does anybody consider themselves to be working there "Dream" Job?????

Definitely the dream job, but maybe not the dream position. I need more power, haha!
As for the second question, no idea. I always had an affinity for the writer, rather than the director. I can remember wanting to write when I was as young as nine. Yeah, I think I was about nine when I found my career path (but I obviously wasn't aware of it then... At that time it was just the dream job of the week, you know... This one just stuck somehow.

I think I was about 14 or 15 when I actually thought of writing as something you could actually make a living doing.

Anyway, anyone who thought they worked their dream job, but realized they didn't? For example, I have a friend who was on the path of becoming a director, working a few smaller jobs, but she turned architect instead.
