I'm completely new to TMNT comics and want to start at vol 1 of a collected graphic novel, be it soft or hard cover. Problem is, i don't know what the best collected releases are of the original comics. Can someone help me out?

Good job not pointing him toward the recent released Mirage hardcovers.

Seriously.

I would say that the best way is to track down the old floppies as the collected aren't in order of how they should be read.

This is a thread started by DrSpengler about the Mirage continuity. It does make it harder tracking down the floppies but it's worth it.

And Cubed quit being an ass.

I would consider starting here... http://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Collection/dp/1613770073/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332175207&sr=8-1

Then if you like what you read there are two more volumes slated to come out... Also if you want you can wait a couple of months IDW will be reprinting the entire Vol.1 series in individual issues colored.

Since folks have pointed out the hardcovers, I want to point out that beginning in May IDW is releasing colored versions of Volume 1, beginning with #1 (if Jade wishes to pick up the book as a monthly).

It's a good time to jump into the hardcovers because only one has come out, and the second volume is due next month. Or if you wanna see them in color as has been mentioned, look for the new IDW single issue re-prints coming soon.

It's also worth mentioning that the Ultimate Collection Hardcovers are not going to collect the complete chronological Volume 1. There will be trade paperbacks under the title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classics that are slated to fill in the issue gaps that weren't done by Eastman & Laird:

Unless you are gonna be picky, just get the hardcovers, they are great deals.

This is coming from someone who has most of vol 1 and various other stuff. It's just way to costly and a pain in the butt tracking down issues on ebay, amazon, etc. I have faith in IDW that they will give everyone what they want, and as long as everyone buys and supports it they said they plan to do most of the stuff collected.

Its killing my bank account trying to complete vol 1, 2, 3, 4. Tales of TMNT vol 1 + 2, and all the one shots, other collections and other things. I also have a feeling that if the new TMNT cartoon catches on and becomes hot it's gonna be even harder finding this stuff for a reasonable price, as people will be buying it up.

The IDW Vol. 1 hardcover is a good deal IMO. I would start there. I also like the colored First books but I think they might have gone up in the price from the time I bought them.

I'll also vouch for the recent Hardcover edition. It rocks and I'm gonna get the second one, too!

As someone who owns most of the original black and white single issues, I am deciding to wait and see whether I prefer to start collecting the ultimate hardcovers over the "Classics". It all depends on what I think of the coloring quality. Has it been announced who will be coloring yet? Rhonda?

Questions about the classics...

Is it meant to cover only Eastman and Laird issues? Does IDW intend to color Volume 3 and 4 as well?

Will every issue in the hardcover Ultimate collections be sold as a "Classic" single issue?

I think the color classics will only go on for as long as sales support it. I think its pretty obvious they're not going to colorize everything. I'll be surprised if it goes on past #11...since the regular trades will have the collected issues colored.

The Classics are meant to colorize Volumes 1-4, granted the sales support such an endeavor.

One of the major complaints about the old Turtle books was that it was black and white, which for some reason mainstream readers have an aversion to. Now if the project made it to Volume 4, who knows, then you run into the folks who found Jim's art too jarring to acquire.

Man, I dono. Something about black and white comics I have always loved. I know others love the b+w tmnt too, but its one of those comics I just feel like its right in black and white.
