View Full Version : Donatello's Gap

Please tell me I'm not the only one who doesn't like the gap in Donatello's teeth. Every time I see it, I think it's a mistake. It looks so out of place. :tgrumble:

I know there is still time before the show actually airs. So here's to hoping the gap is gone. :tgrin:

I don't think it's going to be removed. In ever picture that shows Don's teeth the gap is still there. It was even on the turtle costume at Nickelodeon Universe.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is ok with the gap!

I've said it before in other threads, but I'll say it again here since this thread is directly addressing the situation; as a guy who grew up with braces and other teeth related problems, I like seeing one of the main characters with an imperfection in their teeth. They're supposed to be teenagers fer crissakes, not every teenager has perfect teeth!

I don't mind the gap. I do like it when different interpretations of the turtles add individual physical traits (e.g. skin tones or physical differences like the "gap" teeth) to help differentiate them instead of all four being identical, except with different weapons or bandanas.

Besides, isn't a gap between your front teeth suddenly some modern fashion trend propelled by Madonna's longevity? It will probably just enhance Donatello's attractiveness to April.

I'm another one who likes the gap. It makes this Donatello different from the others; plus, I think it's adorable. :tgrin:

I wasn't a fan of the gap at first, but I don't mind it that much now. It makes him look different, and my guess is that he acquired the gap in battle.

One weird thing is that Nickelodeon seems to be "hiding" the gap. I don't think it was visible in a single shot of him at the Toy Fair, and his mouth is closed on that t-shirt while the other guys are smiling/gritting their teeth.

Maybe Don is self conscious of his gap so he doesn't smile a lot :tlol::twink:

I like the gap. Hey, at least he's not a hulking cyborg, right?

Nick's going to play up the geek thing with Don hardcore, it's pretty obvious. Giving him a gap is the icing on the cake for the shy, nerdy, easily embarrassed one.

But don't you think that is a little stereotypical? I'm all for don being the geek, but i just think it's an odd way of showing it.

I just hope he loses it in battle.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I'd imagine someone with a gap/missing tooth would have an impulsive tendency to keep their mouth closed more often than not.

Speaking from personal experience, geeky kids get it if they get beaten up. In fact, when I was a kid, my tooth was chipped during a fight with this one cretin. I gave him a good stomach punch in return, and he left me alone after that, but the damage was done. So, anyway, with Don's teeth, it's either because of battle or the closest we'll get to "Turtle youth tooth" problems.

I'm more curious on why Nick is covering it up, as "you made the decision, so are you having second thoughts?" Unless they go back and tinker with the CGI to remove the gap before the debut, which would both be lulz-inducing and amusing, actually.

I believe the gap in Donatello's teeth was originally a reference to the fight scene in the first movie and the character detail kinda stuck. I dig it! :thyper:

I agree, it's pretty stereotypical. But it's the vibe I'm getting from Nick's Donnie - tall, gawky, awkward, shy, geeky, etc. They're doing the same thing with Mikey in a different construct, he's the younger bro so he's - shorter, pudgier, freckles, surprised, goofy, etc.

Sick concept art!

I don't care for the gap as much because it seems a little stereotypical of a "geek." I mean why not give the gap tooth to Leo the serious dedicated leader? But we can't have that because it would spoil his dignified air. Same with freckles, can't have freckles on Leo or Raph because it wouldn't fit their personas, but Mike who is the "kid" of the group would be just fine with them.

that is why I'm not so endeared to whole giving them defining physical characteristics as some other people on here are. Gap teeth, freckles, wide innocent blue eyes, scrawny/burly builts, ect can be just as annoying as the colored bandannas to distinguish them. I say let their personalites distinguish them.

I wouldn't call that a double entendre.

Nintendophile

I wouldn't call that a double entendre.

Maybe I'm using the term improperly. I thought it meant a phrase that could be taken two different ways. When Mikey asks Kenshin how he "got in April's pants", he's asking how did he literally appear in April's clothes. But, to "get in someone's pants" also has a second, more "adult" meaning, implying sex. It seemed like the writers purposefully phrased it that way to make a double entendre, a joke that kids might not catch, but older people would. Otherwise, they could have just wrote "How kid you get in April's clothes".

Wikipedia's first sentence explains it as: "A double entendre is a figure of speech in which a spoken phrase is devised to be understood in either of two ways. Often the first (more obvious) meaning is straightforward, while the second meaning is less so: often risqué or ironic."

So, how is what Mikey said not a double entendre?

Powder
05-07-2012, 01:55 AM
I think it's only a double entendre when used to imply both meanings. I hiiiighly doubt any joke of that nature would've made it's way into that film.

I don't think it has to mean BOTH things at the same time, just that one phrase can be taken two different ways, an innocent way, and a more risque way. Here (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/double%20entendre) it's defined as "ambiguity of meaning arising from language that lends itself to more than one interpretation; a word or expression capable of two interpretations with one usually risqué."

To "Get into someone's pants" is too specific a phrase to be used unintentionally. (In my opinion, at least.) They slip jokes like that all the time into children's stuff. It's like "Easter Eggs" for older viewers. The infamous "Finger Prince" joke from Animaniacs, for example.

Actually, it depends how long ago it was that you looked at my profile because when I first came on here I didn't have my gender listed, so that might be the reason.:twink:

Could have been a tickle joke, you know.

I can see it being a sparring accident, like Mikey accidentally whacks him in the face with his nunchucks or something.

You mean like it happens naturally? That's kinda boring. It'd be like Lex Luthor just happens to be bald, not as a result of anything.

Who gives a sh*t if Luthor is bald from natural causes or as a result of something? Why does every detail need a story behind it?

He has a gap. End of story.

Are gaps in teeth exclusive to children or something?

I doubt they'll tell the origin of his gap and will just leave it up to the fans to interpret where he got it. I like the idea of Don sparring and Raph accidentally knocking his tooth out.

Donatello has a gap in his teeth because he's being stereotyped as the nerd and that's all there is to it..the tall lanky nerd.

I have never, ever heard that as being part of the nerd stereotype.

Why do people still have a problem with the gap? This is a non-issue.

The stereotype is that nerds have gaps because it looks gross.
I totally agree with you plus it looks like he got a tooth punched out which is badass.

Not an issue for me, never was. An awkward gap that probably infringes on how Donnie speaks is definitely stereotyping the nerd, though. How can one disagree with that? You've never seen a stereotyped tall, lanky, nerd with acne? Since Don is a Turtle he can't have acne, so give him a gap. Same thing.

It's not a bad thing, it's just a flat out stereotype - think about it, why does the smart one have the gap? Why not one of the other 3? Hm, I wonder...

Glasses, acne and pocket protectors yes but gaps? Nah dawg. Unless it turns out that Donatello is japanese it's not a stereotype. You're just reaching for something to complain about. Its something to seperate him from the others.

Also, that Michael Strahan....what a nerd!

They could've given the youngest, Mikey, the gap, as the youngest is stereotypically more awkward... :P

Ugh. I just saw some pics of him, I think it looks terrible. And it's gonna annoy me the entire show. If they play up the geek aspect for Donnie and give him a dumb voice it'll be such a turn off to the series since he's my favorite turtle. But I think that gap is a terrible design idea.
