View Full Version : Will IDW's April stand out from all the other April's?

The Mirage version of April was pretty much a dull character that never really got much development or focus. While I really liked her in the City at War arc other than that she just served as Casey's love interest and did little to nothing else after that, besides Baxter injecting her with nanobots and then turning out to be a drawing.

The April's from the cartoons and the Archie series all stood out a bit more due to her involvement in the Turtles adventures.

Do you think IDW's April will wind up as anything special? Right now she basically seems more or less "stock" April as she's pretty much just getting started. What do you expect out of her?

It's really too soon to tell, but I sure hope they give her a good storyarc.

Her Micro is coming out in August or September probably. We'll know more by then.

I do really like the way Tom had her and Casey meet though, as well as her reason for wanting to learn martial arts.

I think its funny that she looks like an older version of Nick's April, with the same orange hair.

Really? When I first saw her, I thought of the GCI movie's April, only drawn as not a stick figure.

it's funny that you argue like this...she was a 'dull' character in mirage with whom never really happened anything, apart from...bam!!....bada-bam!!!...and bang!!!...;)

I think she is a very interesting character in the original comic....that her feelings are not extensivelly shared in words with the audience to me doesn't mean at all that I am not intigued by her thaughts and points of view to the happenings....I am reading my newly obtained collection of the volume four run and I think there is A LOT going on with april here...

I'm 99.99% certain I'm not sure what in the world you're talking about!

I can't say I fully agree that Mirage's April was a dull character. I suppose you could say they played her pretty bare bones, but I think that's true in the early issues with most of the characters, which I think in all honesty, worked pretty well for what it was. The Shredder wasn't really developed beyond avenging his brother and being a badass leader of the Foot. Baxter Stockman is just a crazy mad scientist. And April was the den mother to the turtles and their strongest connection to humanity. In Mirage, less was definitely more at times when it came to the writing. I'm really enjoying the IDW series, but I think one of its shortcomings right now is that it tries to over-explain or over-develop things sometimes instead of letting it develop naturally. Luckily Casey & April's relationship seems to be evolving quite nicely, and it does seem like this version's April might be the most interesting thus far.

EDIT: Plus, I don't think April has ever been more interesting than in Vol 1. #11.

I am talking about as the Mirage universe progressed. As I said I really liked her role in the City at War arc, trying to distance herself from the Turtles and Casey only to realize they were her family.

But honestly, she never does much otherwise. She's not even in most of the Vol. 1 issues, in Volume 2 she just gets attacked by Baxter, she does nothing in the Image series at all, and in Vol. 4 she just finds out she's a drawing.

There just wasn't much for Mirage April to do. She was just a normal person which was fine, but it made her role feel less important.

I liked her a lot in City at War also, but Splinter telling her to leave in, I believe Shades of Grey, always seemed out of the blue. Is there any insight to this or was it simply the lack of continuity up to that point? Sorry if this isn't completely related to the thread, but it's always bugged me.

I guess you have a point about April as the series progressed. But then again, it is kind of hard to think of how to develop her past the den mother role without turning her into another ninja in the group.

I liked April in the mirage books, though she could've been given a little additional involvement, but not like fighting wise...more like sleuth wise. I never cared the ass kicking martial artist April. I hope she doesn't become a fighter in here.

I never liked her as a skilled ninja fighter either. I hope IDW doesn't take her too far, but it looks like we'll most likely see her fighting at some point.

I don't have a problem necessarily with her becoming a ninja. It does make sense, but it feels a little too obvious. It can be interesting if done right. I do like training her a bit so that she's not completely helpless. The best thing for her is to probably find a way to tie her past into a conflict with the turtles. It would be tricky to not make it too contrived, but thus is the challenge of writing.

I always appreciated her normalcy, which was a rare thing, even for Mirage standards. Which is also why I didn't like what Laird did to her in the last decade, as being an artificial construct or whatever she now is somewhat undermined that key trait of her: a normal person, swept into the Turtles' various levels of oddness. Then again, as many of you noted, what did Mirage April really do? Which is why the Archie version worked best, for she still had her reporter status -- which is great for basic plot -- and gradually trained to defend herself. Hopefully, we'll get some form of that in future interpretation.

As for IDW April, she already stands out, for she has a more active role in the Turtles' origin than ever before. It's more what Waltz and Eastman will do with her, once she fully interacts with the Turtles. Since the series is currently taking cues for the 87 series, she may become more active in the Turtles' adventures than she would in other versions.

Now that Lauren Stanton is in the IDW series, it's possible Waltz and others might split the difference: Stanton to be the series' 87 April, while IDW April to be like the 2003 version and work as mission control, or something to that effect.

I hope we get a cover reveal soon... like in the next month or so.
