View Full Version : Should Nick's TMNT series adapt Archie comics stories?

Fred Wolf's Turtles were unique, mainly because they were a ultra-kiddiefied version of the Mirage source (changing all but the barest parts of the premise).
The 4kids series pulled from the Mirage source material more closely, and still gave us some original stories, too.
Now we're on round 3 of the Turtles animated this time from Nick. Do you think Nick should take it's cues from the 4kids series in one regard and adapt from the comics, only this time use the Archie issues? I mean, parts of what we know about the Nick series already is slightly Archie-esque (April training to be a she-ninja, Splinter being Hamato Yoshi and having an extend backstory as such) so why not finally adapt some of the better Archie issues?
What do you guys think?

I think that's quite an inspired idea, actually. Archie seemed like what the Fred Wolf could have been if it didn't lose sight of being an actual adventure show, a goofier version of Mirage that was still fun. I still love the first season for what it is because it still tells an actual story, albeit not perfectly. From what we've seen so far, it seems like Nick is going to go for that balance, and pulling from Archie would be a good idea. I still hate that Shredder design though...

Nick could do a lot worse than adapting Archie's stories, to be certain.

I wouldn't want it to rely on it, but there's a good amount of stories I'd love to see. Like the Warrior Dragon one.

I believeve it will be better if Nickelodeon makes another show that will be the complete adaption of Archie comics, instead of adapting some of the stories in this show. 4KIDS had some episodes that were adaptions of Mirrage issues but most episodes were new stories.

Ok...well...almost all.
The Future Shark Trilogy.

Well that certainly ain't happening. As for the adaptation to original story ratio, I'm not sure how that falls.

That would be cool. As long as they adapt the best stories from those comics and mirage, I'll be alright with it.

Or they could even adapt some of the UK exclusive Hero comics along the way since they are in the same canon there. I especially would like to see Ray Fillet. There were even some other storybooks, such as the Magic Crystal that never existed in comic book nor animated form.

Not really. I love the Adventures books, but I have no real desire to see them adapted. I'd like to see this show do its own thing.
The Future Shark Trilogy.
This I could definitely get behind. Bring in some TMNT alum to voice the future turtles. Get Josh Pais for Raph. Hell, it'd also be awesome if Rob got to do Raph again in that scenario.

I think we all just want to see Armaggon animated. It's bizarre that a cool shark mutant from the future is relegated to the comics and one videogame instead o being a major character in a show.
I know that when I was a kid I thought Armaggon was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Maybe a few, but I'd want Nick to come up with its own tales to share mostly.

Yeah, I want Nick to be its own thing for the most part, but I think it'd be really cool if they adapted a few Archie stories.
Yes, Armaggon would be pretty awesome.

I think I and others at the nick event mentioned Armaggon like 100 times or more lol
I would love to see him in the new show.

Please god no!
Says the kid who has probably never read the Archie TMNT comics...
And I did mean the Archie TMNT Adventures books and not stories with Betty and Jughead.

I haven't read Archie in awhile, but from what I remember I always enjoyed the series...a lot of the plot lines were pretty memorable...
Personally, I would like to see Adventures #49, where Donnie gets abducted by aliens. I think it'd make for a great reworked cartoon episode. I also think a re-telling of Michelangelo & Merdude would be sick.

The two stories it would be great to see altered for a television version would be TMNTA#23-25 and #42-44. Anything to have more Armaggon!

If they did adapt the stories they'd probably have to leave out all the Middle Eastern stuff. I doubt that would be risked on a children's cartoon show in today's political climate.

You can say that again! Nick would be sued before the cartoon even made it on the air!

Wait a minute, maybe I misinterpreted that, I am not sure? I thought he meant for being considered politically incorrect or offensive.

You do realize the Archie issues were released in the 90's, right? The 4kids series and 4th movie borrowed the idea from that.
Even in Mirage April didn't really do any fighting until Vol. 4.
Yes I know that. But how do you know they didn't get the idea from the newer show or movie?

I don't, but April doing martial arts isn't solely an Archie thing. Almost every modern version has her doing it. That's like saying having colored masks makes it Fred Wolf-esque. If you want to get technical, than having Splinter being Hamato Yoshi, is actually Fred Wolf-esque not Archie-esque.

Uh, all those things are right, actually. Not making a great point.

True, but Archie seemed to do more with the "Splinter used to be Hamato Yoshi" stuff.

You're right, Splinter is Hamato Yoshi is a FW-ism, but a lot more seems to be made of Yoshi's past as Hamato Yoshi in the Archie books. FW did it at times, but there were whole arcs in the Archie series that played up Yoshi's past in Japan and traveling the world.

Plus the series finale of Archie, "Year of the Turtle" actually had Splinter de-mutate into Hamato Yoshi again.

Temporarily. He was reverting back to a rat.

Yes. That story brings tears to my eyes every time I read it, as it was the last Archie story ever published.
Although to be fair every time a Turtle universe ends it gets me a little. The original cartoon's last episode seeing the Technodrome all abandoned and destroyed, April/Casey's wedding and Turtles Forever in the 4kids series, "Year of the Turtle" for Archie, and those Future/old Turtle stories from the Mirage universe.
So sad to see a Turtle universe end.

The original stories the UK Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles Adventures are not the same canon as the Archie series. Not even close.
I'm pretty sure Magic Crystal story to which you're referring is an adaption of Donatello #1 story Kirby and the Warp Crystal later adapted in the 4kids show The King, hence my avatar <<<.

I wonder if his cult popularity has to do with how little he's been used in various media. But yes, a mutant shark from the future that shoots missiles from his shoulders deserves an episode or two dedicated to him.

Very good point. To me the Archie turtles did too much travelling in general anyway. The trip home from Brazil was fine, the one from Japan dragged a bit but was fine...then they ended up Israel:sleep: It seems they could never stay in NY for long before they were off elsewhere. These long trips away wouldn't have been bad if they had spent more time at home inbetween.
How does ninja April make it Archie-esque, but Splinter/Yoshi doesn't make it Fred Wolf-esque?
Uh, what? You're not getting what I said. You said it's FW "esque". It is.
Than you said I wasn't making a great point.
I just meant your examples were poor.

If memory serves the only time he shows her training under Splinter was in "Worlds Collide". She actually shows Casey up. After parts 2 and 3 she does not really show any skills or that she had trained under Splinter beyond that one storyarc. Archie did it well. She had the '87 cartoon template yet was not often captured and was a bit of a warrior in her own right under Splinter's guidance. The 2007 movie showed she could wield a sword.

To be fair the Turtles were hardly ninja's in the Archie series either. The lack of Foot Soldiers probably didn't help.

It had nothing to do with them being ninjas or not, it was the fact that TMNT Adventures constantly had them globe or dimension/planet hopping. I like that stuff but they never stayed in one place long enough for trips away to seem special.

I would love to see Mondo Gecko and Candy Fine show up as classmates of April's. That'd be so cool!

Well, of course April would want to learn how to defend herself. But, she shouldn't become as skilled as the turtles, who have been training their whole lives.

Stump Wrestling in the new toon would be SICK!!
While I do want Nick to focus on brand new stories not adapting anything that's come before it, I would love to see characters and elements from Archie. Def want to see Armaggon, maybe Null, the Mutanimals, and Cudley.
Although, if they were to adapt issues of Archie's TMNT Adventures, the issue with Christopher Columbus and the Other would be a great issue to adapt :twink:
