I wasn't entirely sure if this was thread-worthy, but, as far as I know, it is our first look at a cover for the Shredder [EDIT: oops, just Leo] micro-series:

Matt Slay (http://spaciousinterior.deviantart.com/) does some nice work.

EDIT: I just noticed there's a similar thread for Matt Slay sketch art in the General Forums:

I suppose a Mod can move it if necessary.

Wait a minute there's a Shredder micro? Isn't this news?

I don't believe it was officially announced yet like the April, Casey and Splinter ones were.

This is a retailer exclusive cover for the Leonardo micro-series. You're looking at the back cover, which is blank for sketch purposes. The one shown happens to have a Shredder sketch, but it's still the Leonardo book.

Ah, I guess I didn't read the description close enough. If nothing else, the "#4" probably should have tipped me off.

Thanks for the correction, Rose.

I ordered one earlier today. I can't decide who I want. It seems the general consensus is that most are getting Shredder after seeing his sample work. I wish there was more TMNT art to look through so I could get an idea of what his Turtles look like.

Like I said in the other thread, I think I'm going to throw a curveball to him, and get Metalhead. Or just Donatello. I don't know.

I really want Shredder, because his sketches of him look great. I'm also debating if I might posibbly change my mind to pick Casey Jones, Raph w/ hood, Bebop, or Rocksteady.

Dang I can't choose!!!

Hey all! My name is Jake Mackessy, I am Matt's manager and I was shown this thread by one of your members. Thanks for all the support! I have got to know many of you over at CGC.

I noticed some people were unhappy about Brett posting but he means well. He is the sponsor of this book and likely just wanted to get the word out on the cover.

Here are some more of the covers Matt has been doing.

Funny, yesterday you posted the following without even asking who Brett was and how he was connected to Matt Slay...(and I quote)

"I'll admit, I don't know who the hell he is, and still don't. And I'm not too fond of his Leonardo cover. But his Shredder and Splinter are amazing. His Turtles are okay, but when he spends time on them, he does great work. I don't like the beaks, but hey, if he puts the amount of work into the sketches for the comics that he does in his Livestream, it'll be worth it.

And I have a feeling that 'Brett' just posted that on all TMNT related forums he could find, and we'll never see him again. It's a shame, because maybe he could be useful here, being a comic book dealer and all."

 Maybe that was your other personality...you clearly aren't one of the haters

How more relevant can one be? especially when this discussion is actually based on matt's idw tmnt work and the Opportunity to get these sketched. Yeah it's his first cover but that doesn't mean it will be his last, everyone has to start somewhere. I think it's great idw is using different artists for these covers. It introduces existing fans of these artists to tmnt. End of the day each to their own some will like some won't guess that is art

So let me see if I understand you. You're saying the guy doing the sketches on the back of the comic is not official even though he's the cover artist. Did I sum that up correctly?

And even if he wasn't, there are lots of artists getting paid good money to do characters they've never done officially. I mean, by your logic Eric 'Ebas' Basaldua had no business drawing this Wonder Woman you see below. Darn it, Ebas. You're not official so you need to stand back! BTW, this is literally the best rendition of Wonder Woman I have ever seen.

Incidentally Matt Slay is one of the nicest, most professional people you will ever meet.

By official I mean credited for something more than a mere variant. Someone of significance to the larger picture of the turtles' history.
This is one random guy cashing in on his lucky break. People are free to draw what they want, doesn't mean it will grasp my interest.
& if you're not Matt Slay, considering you joined the board solely to defend him, then I'll be damned.

He's drawing on his own comic. By any measure that's pretty freaking official.

Cashing in? Matt has been doing art commissions since long before his work got published with IDW. This isn't some new thing he's "cashing in" on. He's doing what he has always done, and BTW - almost ALL artists offer commissions.

"if you're not Matt Slay, considering you joined the board solely to defend him, then I'll be damned."

You are absolutely 100% damned then. I'm not Matt Slay. I joined this forum because I'm an avid comic collector with a new focus on the Turtles. I learned about this forum from other people talking about it through Matt's livestream, hence how I ended up being referred to this thread.

Hi, guys!

This is Brett from BrettsComicPile.com.

I think it's awesome that a lot of people are discussing this comic book we have worked the last 5 months on creating. During the VA Comicon, Matt and his fiancee stayed at my house (Halloween weekend 2011). I had just released a holiday variant of #3, which actually features the scene from the front door of my house. Pretty much a dream Turtles cover done by my pals Rick Ketcham and Brian Shearer, which now sits in my living room.

Matt and I were thinking about the possibilities of doing the absolutely nicest variant cover we could come up with, where we would both take parts of the risk, but also see some of his artwork in print. See, Matt has been coming to the show I run, the VA Comicon for the past few years. His professional and commercial artwork is out of sight, and the guy's style and speed is uncanny. We thought of a way to package a variant in such a way that it showcased the absolutely BEST work Matt could do, along with the FINEST presentation in a limited edition comic...something that nobody has done before.

As I mentioned...we are BOTH turtles fans in our early 30s. We grew up on this stuff. I have a full run first prints of the Mirage books in my personal collection (Even though my #1 has been folded in half!). I have what I think is the CRAZIEST and most unique Turtles Collectible out there, and I can't even mention what it is. I have had beers with Mark Bode while he drew a naked woman for me in my Living Room, while Matt Slay asked James O'Barr about Michael Jackson in my kitchen.

That's who we are. Two fans who wanted to publish the absolutely finest Turtles comic book collectibles available. If you take a peek, and like it, please support it. If we can sell out of all 50 sketch copies, and all 99 Gold signed and numbered copies, we will be able to do future exclusives of the exact same high quality.

Here is what we are slinging...take a peek...like I said...I LOVE the turtles. My house is filled with Turtles. Seriously.

I think the reason for the "hate" is not because of slay's work, but more of the feeling of having it being crammed down our throats. I like his work (his shredder's awesome, turtle's ok) and as an artist of sorts myself, am happy for him and his big break into published comics. That's a dream fulfilled. We love to see new/good art posted here, whether by fan or pro. For me personally I did find it a bit annoying that a solicitation post was made (when there was already an identical one a few threads down by a frequenting member) by someone who we could tell JUST joined the drome ONLY to solicit. It's PR, we get it, but new members/posters should look around a little before posting, especially solicitation threads because stuff like this happens.

Yes, I'm fully aware that people can be tools on the Internet.

Matt Slay drawing on the TMNT Matt Slay variant is official by any *reasonable* standard.

If his cover isn't to your liking that's cool. Art is an individual taste. But you and that other guy essentially saying he has no business drawing turtles is absurd to the extreme. There's also such a thing as having tact.

Just so you know that wasn't Matt's doing. I (believe) Brett's Comics is the main distributor for this variant. The deal he has worked out for the sketch commissions have been a wild success, so I can see why he would be focusing on it.

I don't know Brett (I hear he's cool), but I can assure you Matt is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, and he's a true fan of Ninja Turtles, comics and art in general.

After reading through this thread again, I'm sensing a bit of jealousy in here...

Maybe, I can see how people are upset that someone like Jim Lawson hasn't got a cover yet, or some of the other great TMNT artists. Matt is a huge TMNT fan though, just from his chatting with people in the room while he does the sketches you can tell that he grew up with the turtles like a lot of us. The movie was a huge influence to him, and the cartoon. This guy loves the turtles just as much as any of us, why would he not JUMP at the chance to do a cover when it was offered to him? Would you guys all turn down that chance just because someone else should have got to do one before you??

I talked to him for a couple hours last night during his sketches and hes a TMNT lover just like we all are. He even credited this forum with the vast amount of TMNT knowledge and that it was a huge database for any artist or writer wanting to do the TMNT "right"

Dude's doing like 100 TMNT sketches in about a months time, they all look great so far. I don't see where people are getting so upset from.

I don't even like the way he draws the turtles but his Shredder is the part that's awesome.

That's why most people ordered Shredder sketches.

I love the Technodrome Forum, but sometimes it gets ridiculous with arguments. The only reason people are hating on him is because after one guy posted a thread about the issue, I think some other member posted a thread about it the same day. THEN, to top it off, Brett come in here and pushed it down our throats (bad advertising).

Now, I'm all for limited variants, and I'm glad I got my limited to whatever number (that I wish 'Brett' would enlighten us on) issue. So there's going to be 50 copies with a sketch from Brett's, 100 sketches from Matt at conventions, and now 99 that are just signed in gold marker?

And yes, most likely, if there's a Retail Exclusive cover of any issue, I'm most likely getting it. So Jetpack, Brett's, Detroit FanFare, etc., keep up the good work, and you'll keep getting my money.

I can help clear that up, there is 1000 total issues.

The ebay sale is sold out. So as far as I am aware the only place to get the sketches now is from me. For details see my posting in the CGC comics forums or just PM me. For anything detailed or paintings pm me or email me at [email protected]. If you want one, signed, unsigned, sketched or whatever, just pm me and I will ensure you get what you would like. The signed versions will be available (I think) through Ebay.

Being Matt's manager I think I can clear up 'who this guy is' (Matt). Matt has two Masters degrees in art, he has been mixing his fine arts and comic loves together for a long time. Matt has made appearances on Marvel sketch card sets as well as other card sets. This is indeed Matt's first 'official' published work with the large companies, he just finished his education and is moving into working full time in art so hopefully there is more to come.

Here is another Turtle piece that Matt just finished, soon to be inked by a special guest. More details when its ready :tgrin:

Yeah, pretty much.

I just got here a few months ago and the community here seems pretty f***ing bitter. I still think CyberCubed must have been joking.

I absolutely can't imagine why someone would ask for a thread to be closed when people are enjoying (and buying) some guy's artwork. In what way is this not an appropriate thread to have?

It may be your opinion that people are "acting like it's a huge event" when you think it's not but how on earth is that a problem for anyone?

Some people wouldn't even care if Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird were doing special covers. But they'd have to be a borderline sociopath to ask for a thread about it to be closed.

Not sure why people are being negative towards Matt the fact that he got an exclusive TMNT cover that says allot. Needless to say I like his take on the Turtles and all of his sketches. During his last sketch show he sketched all 4 turtles on one cover that looked pretty good.
Curious to see his remake on the original cover.

Plus he's taking time (and Menace) with the sketch opp and getting it out to everyone who wants it at a reasonable cost.

Because my friend Rick who was representing TopCow at that show asked me to go to help him man the booth.

Additionally, I didn't throw a fit about driving 45 minutes for the show. I threw a fit that IDW misrepresented a product as being exclusive to that show which was not exclusive to that show.

I mean, your conversation doesn't even have anything to do with the topic on hand (Matt Slay's cover sketches). Of course, this reply is just adding to the nonsensical 'discussion' between you two, but I think should be pointed out. If two others were talking about something other than a topic, it would have been pointed out after your first interchange.

Speaking of the covers, I love the feel of it and the back cover. I think you could draw on it with just about anything. I wish I was as good as the artists on here or the TMNT artists, because I would love to add my own artwork to a back cover. A true '1 of 1' so to speak.

I was doubtful at first when asking for a raphael sketch with an eye patch as seen in the image serie. I thought he would loose the ninja turtles trademark headband and not even look like a ninja turtle. But after seeing the sketch it has become my favorite one.And to think i almost changed my choice.

Matt even added the hockey mask i asked for. He went all the way.:D

Hi, guys!

This is Brett. I got a few commissions from some of my favorite artists at the Big Wow this past weekend in San Jose. I thought you guys might want to take a peek at them. I am definitely gonna get the Ron Lim piece inked in the near future.

I asked Mike McKone (who gave me the sketch as a personal gift...rad!) if he drew turtles much...he said not really only in oddball commission requests. He is, however, taking some commission requests in his free time if you can track him down. Mark Bode was happy to do another turtles sketch, and showed me some ideas he has for a print or cover in the future, which was great.

I got to meet a super-turtles-fan who runs her own TMNT website, and I gave a free copy of our unsigned variant to. Finally, when I picked the Ron Lim (Infinity Gauntlet) sketch up, he said it was a bit funny to draw, since Turtles have only 3 fingers (or 2 fingers and a thumb?).

As mentioned, thought you guys might want to take a peek. Since Bode lives less than an hour from me, he suggested I throw his sketch up on eBay...thoughts?

wow, that krang is awesome! from what i see i really like most of this guys work. he is a very talented artist. his shredder and krang are excellent and his casey looks promising, but i have to say i'm not feeling his renditions of the turtles or splinter.

while his splinter is specific in details, i'm just not a fan of the rendition. it feels a little too soft, gentle, and shaggy for me. while splinter always displays a high level of self control and inner peace, the strong and competent ninja is still within him. i don’t get that sense from Mr. Slay's rendering. Mr. Slay's turtles on the other hand don't seem to have a distinctive rendering. all the drawings seem to be vague in their attributes. i wish he would introduce more specific details in his renderings and pull though out from the shadows. it's kind of like the first ten minutes of a movie when you see a lot of action happening. you'll catch glimpses, silhouettes, and shadowed images of the main character but it's just a tease that builds up to the full reveal.

so MS, if you happen to read this, hopefully i've come off as constructive and not a jerk, because that's my intention :)

Hey, dude...I don't know for sure, but these guys have always been VERY gracious. Robert has been a guest of honor at a few of my VA Comicons, and Steve has been a guest more times than I can count. They are both members of Tsunami Studios in Greensboro, NC (Though Robert is a long-distance member).

Hit them up on the studio Fan Page on Facebook to see if they are taking commissions. It is my understanding that Steve is currently "for hire" to ink almost ANY con sketch...he is rather fast and wonderfully professional. Also, Brian Shearer and Rick Ketcham are in the studio as well (The illustrators of our TMNT #3 Christmas themed cover). Here is the link to their page...Good luck!

Hi, guys!

This is Brett. So apparently the current policy is a minimum print run of 1,000 units for a retailer variant, such as the BrettsComicPile.com exclusive we did. Well we have been waiting for the fifth box to show up since these books were printed, and the printer has zero information on printing them, or tracking them. Basically they have been "lost or never made". This means there are only 800 of these things total.

I would imagine this allocation might make it the most limited "production" IDW Turtles comic created so far. Any thoughts?

Best,

Brett

Eh, I don't think it makes a difference. There's only 500 #11 SDCC issues, but I don't think that's going to be a hot commodity later on. Eight hundred copies isn't anything that special in my eyes. I'm sure it's exciting for the retailer, but just not for me. Glad I have one, but wish I would have got everything I asked for.

Hope you didn't pay for those lost 200 issues...

Hey Brett, how does that impact the breakdown of the silver, gold, artist proof, ebay copies as designated on the COAs?

brettscomicpile

Hey Brett, how does that impact the breakdown of the silver, gold, artist proof, ebay copies as designated on the COAs?

That's an interesting question, since the copies that didn't make it were going to be broken down and signed for.

Here is the current break down of the inventory:

50 sold on ebay with original Matt Slay drawing
100 given to Matt as Artist Copies
100 Gold signed and Numbered
150 Silver signed out of 250. (we are 100 short on these)

We still have approximately 300 unsigned copies left, which we are thinking of trying a new strategy on Amazon with, since VERY few unsigned copies have hit the market.

I think we will still follow through and have Matt sign 100 of the remaining 300 so we can keep the numbers as stated in the CAOs. After learning this news from IDW, it will actually make unsigned fewer than signed copies.

Best,

Brett

WOW mcauley. That looks fantastic! That's definitely an awesome piece to have in your collection. I think all of the Matt Slay custom covers are looking excellent.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread about a topic I get the impression everyone is sick of, but I'm so confused by these. I just skimmed through all of 11 pages, and from what I understand, there are essentially 5 versions of this cover variant:

1. Matt Slay hand sketched drawing on back (with COA)
2. Matt Slay signed AND numbered in gold (with COA)
3. Matt Slay signed in silver (with COA)
4. Artist Proof (with COA)
5. Unsigned (NO COA)

Now, I have a "hand sketch" version on order that I'm buying from an awesome forum member here. But as an IDW completist, should I really be looking for 4 more books and if so, what is the "Artist Proof" rendition? I can't seem to find any info on what that is other than there are 100 of them that used to only be available directly from Matt. Also, since I'm late to the party, these all seem to be really hard to find in general!

There is really only one version of this book. All of the covers, before they were sketched, were exactly the same. The different "editions" we're all manufactured by the guy who released it as a way of making sure he made back all of his investment.

I bought every one of these. The artist proof was drawn by Matt as a commission and you could get whatever you wanted as long as you negotiated the price for what you wanted. This book was then sent to the CGC for the proofing. I opted for a 4 turtle group shot that was inked. From what I can tell no one has gotten their books back from CGC yet I assume because of the convention season. Matt stays in touch and is responsive to everyone that bought one on the CGC forums.

I just saw that this hit eBay...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CGC-9-6-SS-TMNT-Leonardo-Micro-Series-4-Exclusive-w-Shredder-inked-Head-sketch-/140877233412?pt=US_Comic_Books&hash=item20cceffd04

Hopefully that means we can expect the round 1 books back soon?!?!?!

Wow that Shredder is awesome! I say a Slash sketch cover on eBay the other day, let me see if I can find that one again.

EDIT: It's been sold but it was listed by this seller:
http://myworld.ebay.com/2010robin619?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

And called a BrettsComicPile exclusive by the seller. It didn't appear to be in a CGC case in the listing they had.

Hello

I wanted to reply here to answer about the ebay listing. the item is mine and is up for sell. I have had many question on ebay about this item. I thought it best to come on here and add some info to clear some misunderstanding on the one that those got straight from Matt Slay / Jake to be CGC.

The one that dault with Jake to Matt Slay then sent to CGC 5/12 or 6 /12

Those should be graded and ready to ship within the next few weeks. it all depends on the amount of time it take CGC that will at most take 4-6 months. once you get your it will not come with a COA. there is no reason to have a COA.

When you have something that is a opps like Jake had with Matt, All order go thru Matt to then be shipped to CGC this way there is no 3rd party in the mix. So this is why these will get a Signature Series Label ( Yellow Label ) that is 100% proof.

one other note when a opps is completed and sent to CGC it go right to Michael Balent CGC Signature Series Director office. all opps have to be approve before it is posted anywere. ( just to let you know )

what I have seen, Brett had many different things he did with these variants. those have nothing to do with Jake opps with Matt.

Now why do I have mine?

I have a dealer account with CGC these were graded way back when because once they hit CGC I had them fast pass. many dont like to add fast pass because it cost a added $10. per comic, but being I have orders going to CGC all the time. plus I am less then a few hours away I had them fast pass. Now the problem. mine order has been sitting there for over 4 months. I had some personal thing come up so they sat there, it was just the other day I was able to go pick them up.

I am sure tho all the Round 1 are graded just in the mix to be Slab and ready to be sent to you or jake to then be sent to those who order thru Jake.

Jake like many of us that deal with CGC cant control the amount of time laps to be graded and shipped.

Just keep in mind it 4-5 months sometime it can even take 6 months.

Jake is one of the most trust art rep, I have ever met. There should be no dualts about him,if my listing has placed many of you to question him Then I am sorry for that. there should be no blame on his part.

The price that is listed on the Auction is way under what I have in it. but because of some outstanding bill's I have no choice but to sell it.

My CGC Board name is: GlynnSr

All the Best

and there wont be a COA with them.

Gotcha. Thanks.

That makes the actual "Artist Proof" copies that have the COA (http://www.tmnt-ninjaturtles.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/TMNT-Micro-Series-Leonardo-04_Cover-RE-Brettscomicpile.com_Artist-Proof_COA_1st-print-April-2012.jpg) very rare as I believe most had their copies sent to CGC for SS.

@rich

Could be, I went in on the one with CGC because that all I deal in. I think all of these have some part of rareness to them. I was told the total print was 1,000

Being that this cover / edition is Matt cover. I say its like his RC Card.

Just me
