View Full Version : The Ross Campbell appreciation thread (IDW, WE WANT HIM BACK!)

So, the very talented Ross Campbell gave us a beautiful Leonardo book today! Here is a thread for everyone to comment on what they thought about the ARTWORK in the book. Ross did a few covers back in the day for Mirage, but sadly no interiors. But now, we actually have a full issue of Ross/TMNT badassery, and it didn't let me down!
I love how his turtles actually look like turtles. They are sorta short, stubby. Very similar to the orignal designs Peter and Kevin came up with back in 1983. The way he can convey emotion is ridiculous, there were moments when reading this book where I got a little emotional. All in all, he is definitely my favorite artist to ever draw a turtle hands down.
Bobby, if you read this thread (And I know you will) WE NEED HIM BACK FOR ANOTHER ISSUE! MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!:tgrin:

Yeah I definitely like his turtles.
One problem for me was some of the action/fighting seemed a bit off. Like the very first panel after Leo drew his swords and the Foot ninja attacks him, both Leo and the Foot soldier look really awkward.
I'd like to see more of his work but I really wouldn't want him replacing Duncan.

Ross knows the door is open to more Turtles. He does have an ongoing book at Image, you know!

Overall, I liked him!
His character design is great.
Especially his foot soldiers. I thought they were pretty much perfect.

On top of that, bring back the artist who did the Don micro. I just LOVED his cartoony art style and it would work well with future lighthearted adventures.

Hell yes. Ross Campbell should be doing the main series. Duncan is great and all but Ross was born to draw turtles! Bring him back!!!!!

You'll see a variant cover from Valerio for #13, but I've got him busy on Battle Beasts (written by me!), first issue out in July. /shamelesspromotion.

Really?! :ohwell: Wow, I do not understand all the love he is getting. I must be missing something or not able to see something that everyone else apparently can? I'd take Franco Urru or even Valerio Schiti over Ross Campbell. I don't get it.....just like I believed that most X-Men fans had completely lost their minds in the late 1990's when they thought Joe Madureira was even a worthy comparison to far more talented X-Men artists like Jim Lee or Andy Kubert. As far as Dan Duncan goes, I really enjoy his art except for how he draws the lower plastrons on the turtles and how they seem too long and look more like aprons. Apart from that, I'd still take him over Ross also.

I'll sign on this. I wish they would do a new Tales of the TMNT. Something that could maybe tie into the main books some way or just tell untold stories. Ross should do some more of the Micro Series. I'm gonna be sad when they run out of Micros and were down to just one TMNT comic a month... :ohwell:

Yes, the last panel was crazy good. All the battle wear on Leo looked great. I'm a fan of different, and enjoyed Ross' art for the most part. Throughout the whole fight sequence, it didn't seem like they were fighting AT ALL. Looked like they were just standing there.
The only fight that looked like fighting, was the one with Shredder (we're all assuming anyway). For me, it looked like he was trying to draw the entire issue in the style of the new cartoon. Not a bad thing, but like I said, different. And different is welcome.

I missed you Samhain! Would you consider the "art" in your signature as good? Because in today's backwards society, people now try to forcefeed to kids that what was once ugly is now beautiful. Just look at the cartoons today, everything is distorted, ugly and a complete and total perversion of what was once considered real art. Dumb down the kids and make them desensitized to what used to be true quality and to expect less and less.

That's one of the best things about IDW's TMNT books; when it comes to the art, we are really spoiled for choice.
When the Raphael micro came out, I was like, "IDW! Gimme more of this guy!"
Then when the Donatello micro came out, I was like, "This dude! More of him!"
And now that the Leonardo micro is out, I'm like, "No wait! I want more of THIS guy!"
So many good artists and not enough ongoing titles to see em all on a regular basis.

I dig the Michelangelo special art, but I felt it was too unpoliced. I'm OK with varying, even eclectic Turtle art styles suiting the different stories and genres and feels... but a Turtle probably shouldn't ever be in-panel crouched next to a human looking like if he stood at full height, he'd be 9 feet tall.
Ross Campbell does some pretty good art. If he was the guy drawing the "definitive" IDW TMNT, I'd be very OK with that... I agree he brings a certain A.C. Farley-like soulfulness (in intent, not actual artwork likeness) to the Turtles, a certain wonder that plays well. Would I take him over guys like, you know, A.C. Farley himself, Kevin, or Peter? Absolutely not, but with just a small amount of material to date he's already carved a place very, very high on my list, and I'd be all for him being given more material to spread his wings.
I'd be very interested to see what would have come of this IDW Leo special had Eastman done layouts for Ross' art. That seems the weak point of the action on the page here... the actual quality of artwork is high, but the action doesn't really ever seem to flow quite as organically as it should. It may be a victim of what Viacom/Nick allowed and what they wouldn't allow, 11th hour changes or something (who knows what goes on behind the curtain, really) but strong, well-choreographed swordfight layouts would have been a huge boon here... I mean, if ever there was a place for Eastman layouts, this would have been the place.

hey man, I may have already expressed my views on the michelangelo micro art-and this is certainly a thread dedicated to ross campbell's turtles-but I fell with the idw turtles editors checkin in on our oppinions here I MUST repeat myself(im summary)...I LOVED the look of the michelangelo micro, I know what pannel you guys are referring to here with michelangelos bulkyness but I eel lke this hype about one lousy(or two if you will) pannel in a book is not worth my time caring about it.it had some extremely well drawn action art in it and I just liked it very mucho...so...that's that...
I haven't received my copy of the book but had to re-gaze at the preview pages many times, because I think they look so beautiful...I kinda agree with andrew here, it reminds me a bit of the deep soul that craig's turtles used to give me...so, bring him on any day I say!;)

Ross Campbell replied to my review at TMNT Entity (http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2012/04/tmnt-microseries-4-leonardo.html#comments) and provided an interesting view point on the lack of blood and whether or not Leo killed anybody:
Ross said...
Ross Campbell here! thanks for the overall great review!! i'm glad you like my stuff for the most part.
the scenarios are different so it's not a 1:1 comparison, of course, my issue has way more ninjas so it's slightly more cartoony, but Leo never visibly drew blood in the Mirage Leo issue, either. his swords never connect with anyone and he appears to never kill any of the ninjas, so i wanted my issue to reflect that and be all-ages like the old Mirage stuff (though some Mirage fans may argue with me on that one, heh).
i think you have to meet this material halfway a bit on some level; there's no visible blood but Leo does kill in this issue, at least in my mind, i mean on page 6 he clearly throws a couple ninjas off the building to their deaths, he's definitely hitting them with his swords later on even if there's no visible blood spray or severed limbs (although there is blood spatter in one of the later panels, just not colored red, can't remember which page number), we see Foot bodies laying around and i intended them to be dead or dying, it's just not R-rated death.
i'm not saying you're wrong to interpret it how you did, if it didn't work for you it didn't work for you, but this is just my two cents. ;)
anyway, i definitely need to work on my action-drawing skills, it's something i've always struggled with. sometimes i get it, sometimes i don't, but i definitely always try my best!! if i ever do another TMNT interior gig i'll try to do better. :D
sorry for the long comment!

I like your response to him, too:
You bring up a good point about the original Leo micro I hadn't considered. I think by that point there'd been so much blood and death in the Mirage comic, I took Leo killing those Foot Soldiers as a given, even if we never visually see him offing anyone. By that same token, as we'd never seen the Turtles kill anyone up to this point in the IDW series, I was left with the impression that he was beating the Foot Soldiers by just "knocking them out".
How true.

thanks, everyone!!! and thank you in particular, Vader.
i wasn't going to jump into either thread at first, i think people should be able to discuss honestly without the creator being involved at least initially, "death of the author" and all that, but what the hell. i'm not going to get involved in the travesty that is the Leonardo issue thread, though, haha. ;)
anyway, i appreciate everyone's honesty, even the negative stuff! i know my work isn't everyone's cup of tea and that's okay, and i'm the first one to admit that my action skills need work. i don't know if i was the right artist for this Leo issue since it was mostly all action, but i couldn't pass it up.
i grew up on the Mirage comics so i've been itching to do something like this for decades. i did Raphael covers and a couple pin-ups for Mirage years ago but what i really wanted to do were interiors, and i almost had an issue in Tales vol. 2 which didn't happen, then i was going to be the regular artist on a TMNT monthly ongoing for another publisher before IDW got the license so that also fell through, so this Leo issue was like some kind of shining beacon of hope, haha. whatever its technical flaws, the issue was like me opening up the floodgates that had been stopped up over all those years of waiting and pouring it all out on paper. i did my absolute best and then some on the Leo issue, whatever my shortcomings as draftsman, and at the risk of being totally corny, i put all my heart into it.
i'm not gonna lie, and i'm not trying to make anyone feel bad for their opinions here, but i was pretty upset by some of the response but this appreciation thread truly means a lot to me!! this isn't my first rodeo, i've been working in comics professionally since 2003, i've had a big range of response to my work over the years, it comes with the job, but it never gets any easier dealing with it, especially for this Leo issue which i feel like i'd been waiting to do since i was 10 years old (i'm 32 now). that said, though, i wouldn't trade all this for 100% positivity, it's like two sides of the same coin, so thank you to those of you who spoke their minds and offered criticism as well as praise. i wouldn't have it any other way.
i don't know if i'll ever do more TMNT interiors or not, as much as i'd love to it's very emotionally-draining for me because i get too invested for my own good, heh. this Leo issue took a lot out of me and i was losing sleep and blah blah blah, not sure i'm cut out for it, but you never can tell, right?
thank you so much again!!!

I'm surprised no one has noticed and mentioned how Ross took Nick's TMNT designs and made them badass.
The influence is clear as crystal, and it was that aspect that drew a lot of respect from me because he proved that even with a "tamer" look to the Turtles, they still have plenty of room to be awesome.

I loved this issue! Ross's artwork is amazing! The turtles looked great, to me they actually looked like teenagers. Leo looked young and also not too human like. One of my favorite parts is where he ducks into his shell to protect himself from some knunchucks:tsmile: What I liked best about it was the slight differences in the closeups verses the far away shots, for example when Leo is struggling to fight the foot the look of it is sort of cartoony (in a good way!:twink:) but then there is that close up of Leo on the floor with the tear in his eye, The detail and emotion in that one shot is awesome! It still looks the same Leo, but in a more detailed, less cartoony, and more real way!
Thank you Ross!!!

thanks, marcelangelo! i love the tails the old Turtles have but i couldn't draw them in my IDW stuff, unfortunately, because it was too inconsistent with Dan Duncan's Turtles, even though all the artists on the various micros draw pretty differently there had to be some degree of continuity with the characters.
it was definitely worth it, i'm sure if i get another shot i'll jump right back into the fray, haha.
I'm surprised no one has noticed and mentioned how Ross took Nick's TMNT designs and made them badass.

thanks! i love the Nickelodeon designs, i think they're solid and stylish and i like that they look like teenagers, a lot of TMNT artists seem to forget that the Turtles are supposed to be kids. one thing i did borrow from the Nick Turtles was that Donatello is slightly taller than the other the Turtles, i really dig that, so i'll admit influence there! but other than that i wouldn't say i was influenced by the Nick Turtles, i've been drawing Turtles fanart, and some official stuff, for many years and the way i drew them in the Leo issue is pretty much unchanged. here's some older stuff to prove it, this one's from 2005: http://mooncalfe.deviantart.com/art/we-re-not-wearing-costumes-23587780
or this one that i did before any of the Nick designs had surfaced publicly: http://mooncalfe.deviantart.com/art/tmnt-mikey-154011931
even my Mirage covers had a similar look to my Leo issue! http://mooncalfe.deviantart.com/art/TMNT-Raphael-Bad-Moon-04-56517541
there's definitely a similarity, you're right, but it's more that coincidentally the Nick designs are very close to how i like to draw the characters! when i first saw them i was surprised at how close they were to my own sensibilities.
EDIT:
More like Nick took the ''design'' from Ross. He's drawn like that for years.
ha! i was in the middle of writing this post, you're way faster than i am. XD. i doubt they took anything from me, i'd be very surprised if they had seen any of my work much less be influenced by it, and i think our two designs do pretty different things despite their similarities. i'm sure it's total coincidence. great minds think alike, i guess! bwahaha ;)
i'm really curious who did the designs for the Nick show, i want to know who the individual character designers are! i think it's the best the Turtles have looked in a long time (barring Kevin and Peter's late work, of course).

Maybe, but I don't think artists need to overly worry about making them look "kidly," at least insomuch as it might apply to what we think when we think of human teenagers.
Because they're not.
one thing i did borrow from the Nick Turtles was that Donatello is slightly taller than the other the Turtles
Which might even be stemming from the old Palladium sourcebooks with the Turtles' stats. Don was the tallest there, too.

thanks, man!! that really means a lot, i know you're a hard man to please. ;) Farley is great, so any comparison is high praise. i will admit to shamelessly taking the mask-hung-down-around-the-neck look from AC Farley, like on the Shell Shock cover or his piece on the old Mirage volume 2 trade with the Turtles scaling the building. for some reason they look more badass to me like that than when their masks are actually on their faces.
Well... I never said they held up to scrutiny. :) Some very interesting stuff in there, though.

I fully believe they probably sat in a room with pictures of various covers and Mirage imagery, Fred Wolf imagery, 4Kids imagery, and all that, and your pieces ended up floating to the surface. In these meetings. The resemblance is uncanny.
like Eastman & Laird's drawing of the mutant porcupine?!?!?! so awesome: http://roaringshark.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RPporcupine.jpg i appreciate the lack of mutant animals in the Mirage stuff but i remember dying to see that character in an actual TMNT comic. or Fred Hamster. That porcupine reminds me of the porcupine enemy from the first TMNT video game.

Hey Ross, just wanted to say I really enjoyed this issue. I hope this NOT your last doing interior work for TMNT, I thought it was really good... I really thought Leo's fighting was good.... I love the way you draw the martial arts sword style. Not kissing butt just because you are here but I was the most pumped up for this issue, with the foot being back. You did not disappoint. I'm a huge fan of your work you posted on your blog, the mask-less Leo I love it. I commented on it already( I said this was the first work I really enjoyed of the mask-less turtles). I'm sure that someone has done this, but I'm linking this thread and emailing it to who ever I can at IDW. People here are serious, we want more of your work.

Not to overwork you, Ross, but I'd love to see you color your own pencils and inks in future stories. I thought Jay Fotos did a great job (and said as much in the comments, as I forgot to give him props in my proper review), but your coloring is one of my favorite parts of your unique style.
I think it definitely elevates your pencils/inks, so I'd love to see an all-Campbell joint somewhere in the future (though not if the workload drives you intot he ground).

Mr. Campbell, while your lurking,it varies of course, but to you do the turtles have height differences are all the same height? Always wondered what one of the artist think.
even though their heights are listed as different in TMNT & Other Strangeness which was one of my first exposures to the Mirage Turtles as a kid (i don't know if that's considered "canon" anyway, but their height differences are pretty negligible in that), i never really thought much about their heights since they've always been drawn the same as each other. i like the slightly different heights and physical builds as long as it's nothing too drastic from one another, so it's cool to see Nickelodeon doing that.
Amazing as always. I hope Michael Bay sees it. :tgrin: You should try doing a group shot and maybe some villains.
thanks!! i've doodled a few villains here: http://mooncalfe.deviantart.com/gallery/24484975 nothing rendered up and painted like that Raphael piece or my Leonardo drawings, but it's something. i was planning to do a bunch more characters in that daily digital sketch series in that deviantart folder, but i never got around to it. i really want to draw a new Shredder and do something cool with him, and i want to draw Complete Carnage, the Shredder Clones, and Rat King. hopefully someday.
Ross, I'll second most here and say your art is friggin fantastic and I loved your work on the Leo micro. Please, please do more in the future! Your Raph pic is now my wallpaper at work. :)
thank you!! really glad you liked the Leo issue, and it's an honor to have my Raph as your wallpaper. :D
Quick question for you - given that you enjoy the Nick designs, what do you think about the limbs getting thicker toward the ends, instead of having them look more traditional? Also, any thoughts on the 3rd toe?
i really like the thicker/tapered limbs, but i prefer the legs to be thicker than the arms like i've drawn a few times, like my Venus (yeah yeah, laugh it up) picture here from a couple years ago: http://mooncalfe.deviantart.com/art/tmnt-venus-154012453 and this older Don drawing: http://mooncalfe.deviantart.com/art/tmnt-don-154011622 the way the Nickelodeon Turtles and the 2007 CGI Turtles hands and feet are almost the same sizes, even though real turtles' limbs are all the same size for some reason it makes them look more like frogs than turtles to me, i don't know. but i really dig the chunky, blocky limbs overall, especially the big feet.
i guess the 3 toes is okay, i suppose it makes more "sense" since the Turtles also have 3 hand digits, but i think the 2 toes are much more striking design element, it looks way less muddled to me than 3, and i also like how the 2 toes mimic ninja tabi. i think 3 toes in themselves are fine but the way Nickelodeon designed them looks like hooves to me, which i guess they did so they wouldn't have to rig the toes on the 3D model. definitely doesn't break the design for me, though.

man, you're probably right, i didn't even think of that. i have no idea how shows like this get put together.
did you see those really early TMNT character shots that Nickelodeon released, they were all monochromatic with a single splash of neon color? those looked pretty similar to my digital sketches, i remember somebody saying i ripped those off even though i drew my like a year before those dropped. i wonder if Nick saw those somehow. diabolical!! still pretty cool to think i may have inadvertently influenced the new show, but i guess we'll never know.

thank you!!! i would LOVE to do an entire issue myself, i'd kill to do my markers and watercolors, or a combination of that and digital, on an entire issue. the main obstacle is time, though, it would be time-consuming to do and i'd need a few months to do it, and i don't know if i could ever get that kind of time in my schedule, or get that kind of time in IDW and Nickelodeon's schedule. that's a tall order, we'd have to really plan far ahead. maybe someday!

I finally picked up the issue today and I read it as soon as I got home. Now just to give you a heads up Leo is my favorite turtle so I had high exceptions for Ross coming in.
but I have to say that the art work was disappointing to say the least. I felt that the action scenes were to crowded, obscured, or over-drawn. I just felt like the scenes had too much going on at times.
I loved the "shredder" fight though it was really well drawn and revealed many things, also it set the tone for shredder for the rest of the series.
Ross I think you are an amazing artist and wish I could learn how to draw comics from you, but I just don't like the way you drew the fight scenes, the last few panels seemed ten times better.
But again great job, still loved the issue, the story really saved it for me and I would also like to see Ross do a second Leo Micro.

sounds good to me, it's gonna suck once it's down to one TMNT book a month, I hope the sales are there to have 2 ongoing, like Transformers. Can't wait to find out who all of the Micros are, I'm guessing its Splinter, Casey, April and Shredder. i usually agree, i hear ya, but i think all an idea needs is the right execution and be in the right hands. sometimes i'm surprised by how something that sounds awful or outrageous can be good, like if you'd told me a year ago that IDW was having the Turtles with the reincarnation aspect of their origin i would've scoffed, but once i saw the execution i really dug it. i think i would frown on a 5th Turtle in the Mirage continuity (not that anything new is being added to it now anyway), that's perfect as-is, but with IDW i feel like it's forging new ground and anything could happen and be cool. i just can't make a concrete call on something until i see how it's done! never can tell, you know?? i think the dynamic of having a 5th Turtle could be really interesting if done right, for me there's a lot of potential there. and the throwing-caution-to-the-wind risk and challenge of introducing a character like that seems exciting to me. and it could also be a complete disaster, of course, haha.

that's okay! i'm glad you liked it overall, thanks. i agree that i'm way better at one-on-one fight scenes, i can wrap my head around it more, and i'd never done anything like the horde of Foot before, all the multiple opponents was really hard for me to keep track of and make it work in an organic way from panel-to-panel. i don't know if you saw my Donatello sample page in the back of the Leo issue but that's usually how i choreograph fights when i'm doing it all myself, it's more one-on-one, more specific actions. the Foot horde was definitely a challenge, in any case, and i'm sorry i let you down with it!

Slash does need to be in the IDW series. Can't belive I forgot about him. So much I want to see, so little comic. I also would have no problem with a 5th Turtle if done right. Wasn't Kevin Eastman working on this long before IDW, or any of the new movie was around. My TMNT Artobiography has a ton of sketches of the "5th" Turtle.

Venus? :dead: Well,9 out of 10 can be your right. Slash is a great example if you look at Archie. He was a psycho with an anger problem who only wanted to belong and ultimately sacrified himself for his new friends fending off an invasion.
even though their heights are listed as different in TMNT & Other Strangeness which was one of my first exposures to the Mirage Turtles as a kid (i don't know if that's considered "canon" anyway, but their height differences are pretty negligible in that), i never really thought much about their heights since they've always been drawn the same as each other. If I'm not mistaken, Don was drawn taller than the other Turtles, in some of the later Mirage books.

Slash could definitely be a cool inclusion! like mikeandraph87 said before, yeah, the 5th Turtle is Kirby, who looks like he's some turtle from another dimension or something? who knows! i loved the Slash toy as a kid, such a cool design, but in the Archie comic wasn't Slash an alien and not an actual mutant turtle? i think that's pretty silly, maybe i could buy the odds of an unrelated alien somehow looking exactly like the Turtles, but also with the same gear (arm/leg pads, the mask) as the Turtles, too? i don't know. Slash should just be another mutant in my opinion, except one with an obviously more unfortunate upbringing than the Turtles had.
i was thinking more about it and i think another reason i'd be keen to see Venus (or a female Turtle with a better name, like her own Renaissance artist like Artemisia or something, rather than being named after an object, which wasn't even created in the Renaissance era anyway! or a name that isn't art-related at all, it's not like the Turtles are a code-named superhero team or something), at least if i was involved in her reintroduction, is BECAUSE so many people hate the character. all the distaste for the character makes me gravitate toward her and focus on what the problems were and why the whole thing tanked, it really gets my gears turning. it's almost like a dare, i get to thinking "could the most reviled TMNT concept work? what if i was involved, how WOULD i make it work? what would it take?" it would be a ton of pressure but i'm interested in that kind of challenge. :D

"There's no such thing as bad characters, just bad writers".
An old addage I firmly believe in, though there's also the reality that "not all characters are created equal" and making some terrible characters function is an uphill battle, to say the least. Venus is that sort of character.
I don't think the problem is the idea of another mutant Turtles beside the 4 guys; we've had Slash, Tokka, Kirby (well, almost) and the Dark Turtles. I think the problem is that Venus is a girl and some fans instinctually reject that.
From a storytelling standpoint, I think the only thing she threatens beside being a Yoko style "breaking up the band dynamic" is that she undermines the "destined for extinction" aspect of the Turtles as related in stories like "Sons of the Silent Age".
The solution, I suppose, is to make her their sister instead of a potential love interest, and barring incest, that'd sew up the "Sons of the Silent Age" thing. But even THAT invites convuluting the origin to include another baby turtle present at the ooze spill we never knew existed. But hell, Mondo Gecko beat her to THAT retcon by ten years or more.
Orrrrr you can do what Next Mutation did and make her their love interest THEN their sister. But I wouldn't recommend it.
She may just be more trouble than she's worth.

If Krang really is from Dimension X or some other dimension, then parallel dimensions could be an explanation as to Slash being an evil, let's face it, Leo doppelganger. Definitely cliche, but at least it makes more sense than an alien planet full of creatures who happen to look the same as a bunch of accidental mutants. I would prefer it being as straight forward as Baxter replicating the accident with his super-soldier mutagen and terrapin exo-armor samples.

yeah, i pretty much agree with you there. some characters are so difficult to make work in a new incarnation that once you change them enough you might as well create an entirely new character. especially with somebody like Venus, where she's got the obnoxious "there were FIVE turtles in the bowl!?" retcon origin story, the "shinobi" thing, her nebulously-defined magic powers, her stupid name, etc. you'd have to change a lot to really get her up to code so to speak. if i was ever in charge of her IDW introduction, i would totally do away with pretty much all of that stuff and have her simply be a new mutant turtle unrelated to the accident that creates the Turtles, and probably unrelated to their reincarnation aspect. i don't think she would have to be any less an important part of the new IDW Turtle family unit, either, i like the idea of them finding her and taking her in and bringing her up to speed and all that. their bond wouldn't have to be compromised at all, i'd love to see a dynamic like that.
I don't think the problem is the idea of another mutant Turtles beside the 4 guys; we've had Slash, Tokka, Kirby (well, almost) and the Dark Turtles. I think the problem is that Venus is a girl and some fans instinctually reject that.

that one's easy! the procreation possibility is a definite obstacle, but there are two good fixes for this: 1) it's just never brought up; sex has rarely if ever been an aspect of TMNT in any incarnation to my knowledge (EDIT: i remembered Mike's run-in with Seri in volume 4 but i haven't read that in a while, was it ever actually confirmed that they made-out or had sex or anything?! i remember Seri laying eggs but it was likely somebody else was the father...), at least regarding the Turtles. i only have vague memories of the Fred Wolf show and i'm passingly familiar with the 2003 show and Archie series so maybe there's something in those, but as far as i know it's nothing beyond simple schoolkid type crushes. i don't think IDW TMNT (if that's what we're using as the new platform) would ever have to go there, it would never even have to broach the relationship/romance angle, they could all just be a big family/group of friends as usual. and 2) mutant animals are sterile due to their aberrant anatomy! done and done! ;)
That might work or as you said the perferred which could be the result of Baxter's last effort of stopping the turtles before taking matters into his own hands. i agree with you and Matches! for another mutant character (whether Slash or Venus or otherwise, turtle or not) i think a straightforward origin is by far the best: Baxter or the Foot simply creates a new mutant with the same mutagen or whatever. done. definitely the best way to go.
i would love to draw Slash for IDW if he shows up, though, let's keep our fingers crossed!! i used to draw Slash all the time when i was younger, i should try my hand at him again.

Haha yep, Ross is the man!
Hands down best issue IDW has put out. I liked the art for the other micros and all, but Ross far surpassed them all, in my opinion. He should have been contracted to do all 4 Turtle micros. His Turtles are completely believable mutant turtles, they jump off the page. So awesome and lively...connects the plastron, believable masks, gritty, yeah...whole package.

i'll really try to do up a quick sketch or finish the one i started a couple years ago when i used to do daily sketches on my blog. we'll see!!
jeez, i don't know if i even have those drawings anymore, i'd have to look around... :( i used to draw Slash a lot way back around 2001 when TMNT volume 4 started up and a friend and i had delusions of grandeur about getting involved and doing a Tales story and we had a Slash story we wanted to do. suffice to say that never happened, heh. XD. i'll see if i can dig up anything, though, but don't hold your breath!
is there an art thread here? do you guys draw your own stuff and post it?
Man that sounds awesome. I would like to see some art of Slash as well. Pretty please. :-)

I get my comics online, so I had to wait til today to receive and read it, but I'm just gonna echo a lot of things that've been said already. I really loved the artwork; by far the best of any of the micro-series issues. Favorite part, the ending fight scene on the roof. And the scenes that really stood out were the more detailed panels and the close-ups. I dunno about anybody else, but I got a little excited just to see a turtle with pupils in their eyes...
Another thing, I love the Covers David Petersen has done for the micros, and it's always a crapshoot as to what cover I'll get, but I was lucky enough to get the Ross Campbell cover B this time! Very cool!

The coloring job done in the book for sure took away from Mr. Campbell's line work. When he's coloring himself everything looks amazing, but the issue just looked a bit flat. But yeah, if Ross was able to do a Tmnt book using Duo-tones, well that would be PERFECT.:D

i was thinking more about it and i think another reason i'd be keen to see Venus (or a female Turtle with a better name, like her own Renaissance artist like Artemisia or something, rather than being named after an object, which wasn't even created in the Renaissance era anyway! or a name that isn't art-related at all, it's not like the Turtles are a code-named superhero team or something), at least if i was involved in her reintroduction, is BECAUSE so many people hate the character. all the distaste for the character makes me gravitate toward her and focus on what the problems were and why the whole thing tanked, it really gets my gears turning. it's almost like a dare, i get to thinking "could the most reviled TMNT concept work? what if i was involved, how WOULD i make it work? what would it take?" it would be a ton of pressure but i'm interested in that kind of challenge. :D
Personally, I think the best way to bring Venus back would be to make her a villain.
That way, her fans get to see her in a different light, and her haters get to see her get her ass kicked.

I think from a visual sense, it works to have them pupil-less most of the time, and to bring in the pupils for more dramatic or intimate moments, the way Ross did. Pretty sure it doesn't need to make any more sense than they look cooler that way. Same goes for bats. Though he didn't really look cooler when they did that in The Dark Knight...

thanks, man! i'm glad you liked that. i was ready to fight for the pupils but it worked out with no hassles, maybe because i didn't draw them in every panel.
i always took the white eyes, at least in the Mirage comics, to be just a stylistic thing rather than literal because it looks cool and menacing, since the Turtles would often have pupils when maskless. but even Mirage was inconsistent depending on who was drawing. i like both looks, i guess, but overall i agree with you about the pupils. i think a balance between the two would be cool since they both work in different moments to convey different things, but even with that said, i'd totally do an entire comic with the pupil look if they'd let me.
what do you think about how it is in the IDW series, Andrew? i guess it's cool they reconciled the pupilled/pupilless disparity by having the Turtles be pupilless all the time, there's no stylistic/symbolic visual cue there, but i'd personally still prefer the pupils. pupilless unmasked Turtles kinda look like zombies or something to me.

I tend to agree. I know that the reasons they're doing it come from a good place -- you know, the Mirage TMNT sometimes had them, let's honor that, and maybe the general idea is that it makes them somewhat more "gritty," I guess? (me, I'd much rather have their actions determine the grit factor than their damn pupils) -- but the lack of pupils is hard to reconcile for a variety of reasons.
That said, I can live with the lack of pupils but I do think they're needlessly selling short the visual range of the characterization possible of the Turtles by forgoing with them. Instead, you know, we get the rainbow bandannas and... and now I need to stop.

The eyes have it, this thread seems to be saying.
The pupils are there to convey real, raw feelings. Just look at the resolve in Leo's eyes in the last panel, or the look of abject fear as he's about to be thrown off a building. It makes the Turtles seem much more human.

Ross as you know I was a little disappointing with the action scenes of Leonardo, except for the 1v1 Shredder fight scene and a few other fight scenes, but the scenes with Leo having pupils, Shredder holding Leo over a building, I was enamored by the scene to say the least.
I TMNT having pupils just hate it (Unless mask are off).... Never liked it, preferred the glazed white eyes. I actually like the use of them in those few panels.
Last thought. I may have been a little dissappointed, but that was the most IMPRESSIVE drawn scene of displaying the turtles emotions that I have scene in ANY medium.....

i always thought the range of expression in the Mirage books was pretty impressive for characters with blank eyes, but i think the pupils definitely bring it to another level, like with Farley's Turtles.
i was flipping through some of the old comics yesterday and some of the artists do draw the Turtles pupilless when unmasked, like Eric Talbot, but then some of them change depending on expression or how large the character is within the panel, like Lawson's stuff in the old Leo micro, where sometimes they have pupils, sometimes they don't, then other panels they have little black dot Calvin & Hobbes eyes. it's all a style thing, i guess.

Yup, for sure. Ross was meant to draw the Turtles. If that picture doesn't capture the entire essence of Leonardo I don't know what does.
I'm really hoping that Ross is the guest artist for #13-#14, but I doubt it because Bobby said the guest artist has a similar style to Duncan. It will probably be either Kuhn or the guy that did Donnie's micro.

For me, the only things missing from the Leo book were lines to show speedy movement and impact. Your Donatello page in the back of the Leo book had those lines and it really gave some extra "oomph" to it. Had those sorts of lines been in the Leo book it would've made it even better.

I'd still love to -- be good to get back into some true TMNT throw down stuff (as opposed to the horror slant I was gunning for in Infestation). It's not my call though. Tom's still writing up a storm, and as far as I know, there aren't any plans to do any more micro-series or mini-series books.
Maybe a mini-series somewhere down the road.
Kinda funny... I had started hearing rumours that Ross and I were meant to be part of the rotation when Dark Horse were apparently lining up the license. At the time I didn't even know Ross!
Also, if you guys like his art, definitely check out WATERBABY. Such an amazing book!

i don't know if you read through this whole thread, but i mentioned earlier that i'm hoping maybe i could somehow convince IDW to do a second round of micros about the Turtles, like a second Leonardo micro, a second Raph one, etc. delving into how the characters have changed as people since the first round of micros, and i could come back and draw another Leo issue and maybe work with you on that. not that i have the power to do that but maybe i can plant the seed of possibility...

Not sure if someone has posted this. But holy crap, this is probably the single most beautiful piece of Tmnt art I have ever seen in my entire life. Just breath taking!:o

I made this avatar for myself yesterday before I even saw this thread! Wicked!
Ross, thanks again for your work on the turtles. I think what I like about your interpretation is similar to what i like about the new Nick cartoon: there've been many great artistic takes on the TMNT over the years, but few get the whole "teenage" part right. They often look very bulky, not very teenagey at all.
But in your art there is a sense of youthfulness to the turtles. They actually LOOK like teens to me. I just love it.
Thanks again and I'm definitely going to be following your work!
Big thanks to all of the IDW folks. You guys are tops.

aw, thanks for the thread bump, Andrew!! i appreciate that. :)
Zulitha, thank you to you, too!! i appreciate the kind words. i know what you mean about the Turtles seeming youthful, it's cool to see them playing up that aspect in the new Nickelodeon TMNT.
i feel like i sound like a broken record at this point but all the support and everything really does mean a ton to me, it's super cool and such an honor. it doesn't get better than this. <3
i don't want to clog this place up with artwork posts, i think there's an artwork thread elsewhere here, but if anyone's interested and you haven't yet, check out my latest TMNT stuff: http://mooncalfe.deviantart.com/gallery/24484975 there was a TMNT Week going on with one of the art groups i'm a member of and i posted a drawing every day of the week, haha. culminating with my TMNT fan-comic drawing which somebody cross-posted here on forum.
i also posted some crappy childhood TMNT drawings, haha. X( and here's an entire post of childhood Turtles art from when i was 9-10 years old in 1990: http://mooncalfe.livejournal.com/196163.html so embarrassing!
AND i recently found some TMNT drawings i did in 2002: http://mooncalfe.tumblr.com/post/27498170897/old-ninja-turtles-art-from-2002-im-so-old-t-t
you guys rock!!! i wish i had more time to post on the forum but i feel like i never have anything worthwhile to say. :\

Simply my most preferred turtles design till date. I just read the Leonardo microseries today.
My new avi and sig are a testimony of this greatness.
I definitely prefer Ross Cambell's style to the main IDW issues style.

Like I said in your other thread, you don't just get what you want like a spoiled kid. This is a big business with their own plans, and professional artists with their own projects to be concerned with.

Like I said in the other thread, Ross did the Leonardo micro and with a possible new set of micros in April, they will need people to work on them. Planning projects in advance means it is possible allocate time in the future.

A shame. If he had time to do more issues the comic would just be too frickin good. Not that it isin't now. I'll buy other comics hes working on though :D

Bump. Just because I want to see more issues like the Leonardo one. I also want to see Ross Campbell stories told in the Mirage universe if that could possibly ever happen. THNXBAI!

Ross I am a pretty huge fan of your Turtle art and I keep hearing that you are busy on other projects. After your Leonardo issue I would like to check out some of your other stuff....here is a chance for you to plug your other work.:tlol: What else is out there of yours that is pretty recent that we could follow you on? I can't be the only one that would like to see some of your other projects...

thank you! right now what's keeping me so busy is GLORY at Image Comics, written by Joe Keatinge, but i also have my own solo series i've been working on over the years, like WET MOON which just had its 6th volume come out last month from Oni Press (and which got me an Eisner nomination back in 2007!), and SHADOWEYES which is a vigilante teen angst comic that has 2 volumes so far and has some TMNT-inspired elements. you can check that out for free on shadoweyes.net, i post a page every Monday. i have some other things i've done but those are the main ones.
